EQUAL PARTS TALENT & HARD WORK
December 26, 1965
Below is a verbatim reprint an article by Edgar Penton based on his interview with Lucille Ball. Bolded and italicized text indicates quotes from Ball. The publication may vary by newspaper. The above illustration was by Robert Thompson.
During a recent discussion between a television producer and a network program executive on the problem of casting a top role for a big television variety special, the latter remarked, "If we could just get somebody like Lucille Ball we'd be in clover."
The producer mulled that statement over for all of one second and said, "There is only one Lucille Ball, and if you can't get Lucy there's no such thing as somebody like her."
That statement comes pretty close to a capsule explanation of Miss Ball's unparalleled success as a star in all phases of the entertainment business.
Of course, Lucy's career can't be embraced with a single anecdote, but it serves to underscore the fact that there really IS only one Lucille Ball.
From that landmark evening, Oct. 15, 1951, when CBS launched a new comedy series called "I Love Lucy," to the present, Lucille Ball has never left the hearts and screens of the nation's television viewers.
The vivacious and irrepressible comedienne enjoys the distinction of being the only star to score twice in a hit television series her latest, of course, the current “The Lucy Show” still on CBS, Monday evenings.
To evaluate the success of a Lucille Ball, however, a person must go beyond the popularity of a television show. Let's take a look at Lucy, herself, and then perhaps we can understand something about the talent that creates so many memorable moments of entertainment.
Lucy (hardly anyone calls her Lucille, except her mother) candidly attributes her success to hard work. As a matter of fact, that's the advice she gives to all newcomers who ask her how to make the grade -in show business.
"I know it sounds rather easy and simple to tell an eager youngster to get out and work hard," Lucy explains, "and they get a lot of advice like that from parents. But show business is no different than any other business.”
"If you want to reach the top, you've got to start somewhere near the bottom. Learn to be a good listener and remember what you learn.”
"Of course, luck sometimes plays a part in everyone's career, but you can't rely on it. Even if fortune did place you in an advantageous position would you be prepared to deliver? I like busy people who know their capabilities and utilize them at the proper time.”
"It may only be part of the overall goal, but there's nothing wrong in having a series of goals, and realizing one at a time.”
"It's great for the confidence, and will win you respect and recognition at a time when you least expect it."
Miss Ball says she considers it necessary for an aspiring performer to be able to communicate with others, exchange ideas and philosophies, develop a sense of values, and not to expect what you don't deserve.
"When I was a youngster my family taught me that you get out of life what you put into it," Lucy says.
"By the time a lot of people learn the soundness of that philosophy, they find it's too late to retreat to a sensible position, and spend much of their lives trying to overcome ill - conceived notions about what life owes them.”
"Faith in yourself and your ambitions doesn't necessarily mean you have to put aside all the graces in your race for success. Yet I say you can afford to be a little selfish as you progress.”
"But I don't mean 'selfish' in a negative sense. For example, be selfish about your time. Don't waste it. Don’t let a party or a good time dilute your effectiveness on the job. Don't try to do too many things to the point of not being able to do a few things well."
Lucy says that during her early years she felt a great insecurity about her own ambitions. She thought her personality was flat, that she had no poise; after losing half-a-dozen jobs . she was just about ready to give up show business.
"I felt down, but not quite out," Lucy recalls. "Even when a New York drama coach told me but kindly ; that I was not cut out for the entertainment world, something within me wouldn't quit. I took other jobs, in, around and near the theater.”
"I finally got a job as a model. I wasn't acting or performing in a true sense, but I gained confidence and I haven't stopped working since."
Few would argue the point that Lucy is one of the hardest working gals in show business, but it should also be recalled that the spirited redhead from Jamestown, N.Y. brought a little item into the entertainment marketplace called talent.
Over the years she has managed to shape her endowments into what today is regarded as one of the great comedic talents of our time.
Her ability to grasp a situation or scene and transform it into riotous fun is one of the many reasons why her appearance is sheer joy to watch. And she has also developed a remarkable ability to do startling, realistic impressions of other personalities.
Tribute to Lucy's rare and wonderful versatility as a comedienne comes from every writer who has had the opportunity to pen a scene or create a characterization for any of Miss Ball's adventures before the cameras.
Her long-time writers on “I Love Lucy,” Bob Carroll Jr., and Madelyn Martin, Bob Schiller and Bob Weiskopf, who came back to launch Lucy's return to television on “The Lucy Show,” admit they create some almost impossible situations for Lucy.
But they have never been able to stump the adept Miss Ball, who didn't mind one bit swinging from a chandelier, going up with a balloon or flying like Peter Pan.
Milt Josefsberg, principal writer on the current Lucy Show, says that he no longer has misgivings about whether Lucy is capable of meeting demands of certain scripts.
"Since I've been on the show, Lucy has wrestled a bear, played with a porpoise and single-handedly wrecked an entire motion picture set. Yet when she is earthbound, she's peerless when it comes to timing and delivery.”
Today, Miss Ball is the president of Desilu Productions, largest television film producing facility in the world. She is the mother of two talented youngsters (Lucie, 14, and Desi Jr., 12, children of her marriage to Desi Arnaz), and the wife of comedian Gary Morton (they just celebrated their fourth anniversary).
She just completed a season of radio on CBS (”Let's Talk to Lucy”), took time out to star in two one-hour television specials, completed a year as national chairman of the Easter Seal Campaign, and is talking about plans for next year.
Like Lucy said, it takes hard work.
Although the text of the article was basically the same in all newspapers (sometimes edited for length), syndicated columns would often feature different headlines, photos and other enhancements. This is the headline and photo collage of the same Edgar Penton article in another newspaper.
On the same date, Chicago television editor Larry Walters retired after 36 years and counted Lucille Ball as one of his most memorable performers.
On December 26, 1965, the Miami News reported that Vivian Vance was returning to the Coconut Grove Playhouse to perform in the Neil Simon play Barefoot in the Park. In August 1965, co-star Darryl Hickman and Vance had appeared on the TV game show “Call My Bluff” together.
The day after these articles hit newspapers, a new episode of “The Lucy Show” premiered titled “Lucy Discovers Wayne Newton” (TLS S4;E14).

Omg I’m so sorry it was specific I meant can you tell me the beef with young west and sik k or just milt rain feuds 🥺😭
Young West x Sik-k: Young west threatened to fight Sik-K cause he was a snitch or something? So that was a whole thing. Then Sik-K posted a screenshot of Kid Milli’s “Why Do Fuckbois Hang Out on the Net?” song from Spotify to throw shade without actually saying anything back (LOL that was a good one. I got a nice little chuckle out of that). Young West then said that they were cool though, apparently Sik-K had threatened to sue or call the police (allegedly) so Young West couldn’t. IDK if they really squashed the beef or if Young West was just playing nice. It was kinda weird cause one second he was mad about the (alleged police/suing threats) but then after a while I he said they were cool. So IDK if the police/sue thing was just a rumor he heard and then after ACTUALLY talking to Sik-K or whoever they realized it was stupid and lots of rumors or what. This wasn’t really a big deal. It transpired over the course of a few hours lol.
Young West x Changmo: This one was HELLA lowkey but Young West and his friend implied they weren’t fans (or cool with Changmo). The friend was like “YW uses autotune better than Changmo (or something along those lines) and then YW read it and seemed to agree + said “when I used autotune people talked so much shit but now he does it”. Then people in the chat were talking and I was like “Oh yeah, they are just joking around” (I was assuming that was the case. People make fun of each other all the time) but he (YW) was like “It’s not a joke” So from then on out I was just assuming YW (or mkit as a whole) is just not really cool with Changmo. But again this was A LONG time ago so IDK how these relationships are today. If you didn’t watch that live then you most likely don’t know about this.
Loopy x Myundo + Super Bee: IDK why Loopy brought up Super Bee cause apparently SB didn’t say anything. It was just Myundo. He was mad since after “King Loopy” was released, he hated how everyone was calling themselves King so he dissed Loopy for nothing. Loopy released the song “Me” to diss back. And that was basically it (I think Myundo released one more song but Loopy didn’t respond cause he said what he had to say + that whole battle, as he told us on SMTM7 was SUPER stressful for him to the point of hospitalization). The only thing he said about SB was calling him “insect bastard” (lol). Super Bee and Loopy squashed the beef during SMTM7 cause there wasn’t really a beef there. It was Myundo x Loopy’s thing.
Bloo x Producer Hoodi (not the R&B singer from AOMG): Basically this was squashed really early but it was a mess. Basically the producer got on live and was saying that Bloo isn’t even actually really into music he just does it just because fame + money (I think was the reason). Also, that he wasn’t fairly compensated or whatever. So yeah he was just ranting and raving. I think this was in the NeoBlue days (NOT for sure but I know it was basically a side project with either Neil or Niahn) so that was he was producing making. The other member he had nothing but good things to say about (said he had money and he doesn’t have to do this, he just truly likes music). Bloo ended up crying on live after all the drama (I wasn’t in this live) but before that Hoodi went off on everyone in his live cause he didn’t like all the extra eyes watching the drama unfold. He’s used to just having a handful of his og fans so he can say whatever he wants and be himself. Anyway after Bloo cried (bloo was doing PRETTY bad at this point in his life and it was more than just this drama) Hoodi and him ended up squashing the beef and whatever. Now Hoodi keeps a mostly low profile and stuff. Again, this is REALLY old and blew over pretty quick.
Nafla hasn’t really had any beefs and Owen doesn’t really beef with anyone either. Besides that little thing he had with Swings where he put that smart ass comment and swings replied giving him ALL the smoke and then they squashed it on SMTM as we saw. Usually YW gets in the drama. He’s pretty outspoken and he used to get on ig live drinking and saying a lot of stuff. He slowed down a lot though obviously because of all the drama.

✰ BEST REASONS TO WRITE FUCKIN’ RECORD REVIEWS IN 2018 ✰
✰✰✰✰✰ 6th ANNIVERSARY ✰✰✰✰✰
Neil Morris, speaking to Alan Lomax in 1959:
“Well, when I was just a small boy, Old Uncle Milt Oldfield…Billy Oldfield, the Congressman from Arkansas for so long, it is his father. He and my father are awfully close friends. And they were discussing music. They were music teachers both of them.
“And uh, and they said, dad did and Uncle Milt sanctioned what he said, that MUSIC HAD NO END. That you could learn all the other guy [or girl] learned, and after you got that done they would then, something else would crop up. That uh, that you, that was the reason why that uh, music advanced. That’s why that you would get a better music in one generation maybe that is, uh, IT WOULD FIT THE TIMES IN WHICH THEY LIVED.”
[Lomax: “What about music on the grapevine?”]
“Welllll, they said that MUSIC GREW LIKE THE GRAPEVINE THAT IS NEVER PRUNED. That each year it’d…it’d put on a little bit more. That was what they said, now, about it. Any further questions?”’
It’s time to feast from 2018′s Grapevine That Is Never Pruned with 123 (+ 162 more) of the BEST REASONS TO WRITE FUCKIN’ RECORD REVIEWS IN 2018!
A prefatory note: The Best Reasons campaigns of our first five years endured critiques from far and wide about too many damn records listed. Well...we can no longer countenance such reproach. Every single one of these nuggets is an essential thread in the tapestry of 2018′s combustible sonic arts! We here at FRR stand for ecumenicism and as such, consider the breadth of our listening parameters: Feeding Tube Records issued 74 items in 2018 (!), Clean Feed released about 80, and Astral Spirits about 30...that’s a lot potential gold in those three labels alone. Sure, it’s too much for any one person to absorb, but still...
We all know that some combination of easy access to home studio tools, world wide web streaming, social media delirium, legacy record industry collapse, and artistic resistance to creeping authoritarianism has (somewhat paradoxically) unleashed a tidal wave of idiosyncratically great music during the past decade, so it should come as no surprise that such a list as this would contain nearly 300 essential items. Yea, it seems nearly everything gets recorded and released these days (especially the zonked improv/collagist /noise/outer limits realm), but whether or not we listen to such items as frequently as we consumed Exile On Main Street or Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy back in the day is irrelevant...the time is now, and as far as wild sounds from the outer dimensions goes, now has unprecedented bounty...listen heartily, for tomorrow, who knows?
(...all long playing records unless otherwise noted...also, the list was made complete with links, but grrr they don’t show up, so point your browser as they used to say and happy hunting!)

Okay, here’s what I’m going to say; as a 2D animator, I’m not too crazy with “The Thief and the Cobbler” (yes, it’s an animation gem, but that doesn’t mean I should root for the film over Disney films). I love “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” since I was a kid (I also love “The Last Belle” the best, which it was directed by Neil Boyle who worked at “Thief”) . Though, aside from “Thief,” I enjoyed Richard William’s animation style from his works (I think the best ones are the animated commercials).
Now, since I discussed with my good pal @theshadowsofevil , we conversed about how Tack and Princess Yum-Yum both inspired Burton’s characters. Which I’m going to discuss now:
During this decade, everybody knows that the Once-ler from “The Lorax” was inspired by Tack the Cobbler, who was inspired by silent actors, like Buster Keaton, and Art Babbit’s/Milt Kahl’s animation (while Yum-Yum seemed to be inspired by Snow White or other old retro cartoon gals). However, do you know that Tack (and Yum-Yum) reminded you of any Burton character? Well, here’s this.
1) Since we know that Sally inspired both Emily and Victoria from “Corpse Bride,” both Sally and Victoria seem to be referenced from Princess Yum-Yum. I mean, think about it; similar eyes and headshapes... and have a feeling with cinnamon-roll beanpoles. Oh, and did I mention that Victoria has a nurse/maid like Yum-Yum’s, while Sally has a “father” figure like Yum-Yum’s dad? Just a hunch.
2) From both Jack and Victor VD, they seemed to be referenced from Tack’s because of the similar, lanky body. Not to mentioned pale skins (well, Jack is a skeleton, of course). Though, while Jack and Tack (hey, they both have rhyming names 8D ) are indeed look alike, the question was how Victor VD was similar to Tack? Was it the black flip hair? Well, not only similar body, but maybe because of the personality - especially their feelings toward their love ones (Yum-Yum and Victoria)? Just the guess.
Though, it’s hard to tell if Selick and/or Burton used references from William’s. I mean, when I saw the Brigands, I couldn’t help that their design reminded me of Tim Burton’s style a lot.
Well, Amelia ( @theshadowsofevil ) , feel free about what you think.

As always, once Plymouth dealers had something, Dodge dealers wanted it (and vice-versa) - and this was particularly true of the 1970 Plymouth Duster. Plymouth had created the A-body Duster on a shoestring $15M budget, money originally allocated to refreshing the Valiant sedans (the coupe and conv. were given to the Barracuda in 1967). The purpose being to hold on to the buyers who wanted smaller muscle cars like the ‘60s Barracuda as it grew into the larger 1970 E-body ‘Cuda/Challenger twins. - The Duster wasn’t part of Chrysler’s long term plans, but it was also very cheap to create - which is probably why it made it to production. It was a new body on top of the existing Valiant platform - the wheelbase, fenders and hood, doors, wheel track, and rear overhang were retained. But within the confines of what could be changed junior designer Neil Walling, working under Milt Antonick, went to town on a fastback with a totally new rear end and quarter panels. - Aimed at the semi-fastback Chevy Nova, the Duster quickly proved very popular, not only as a 340-powered muscle car, but all through its range down to the slant six economy models - ~217K were sold for 1970. Dodge had scaled back the Dart GTS as the Challenger arrived. In 1970 the performance Dart was the Swinger 340, replacing the 383 GTS; and Dodge was stunned by the Duster’s volume. When the division’s chief, Bob McCurry, asked for a Duster of his own, he got one - the #DodgeDemon. - In return for Dodge getting the Demon, Plymouth got a version of Dodge’s hardtop Dart Coupe; which also sold very well as the Plymouth Valiant Scamp. Anchored by the striped, scooped, and rapid Demon 340, the Dodge did okay, but never as well as the Duster. After just two years and, supposedly, complaints from “religious groups,” prompted a name change to “Dart Sport” for 1973. - Keen eyed observers will note something different about this particular Demon, however - the roofline looks off. That’s because somebody chopped this ’71 Demon 340 into a nice El Camino-style pickup (this is an old photo, and there’s no shot of the bed, sadly). Neither Dodge nor Plymouth ever got a U.S.-production “ute” until the 80s Rampage/Scamp. https://www.instagram.com/oldmotors/p/BxaI_RsFygZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=j44truu252y5

HOLLYWOOD — May 3, 2021 — For Immediate Release: A star-studded, virtual fundraiser, Brookledge Cares, will be held by the historic Brookledge estate, May 8 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. Cost is $10 per ticket. Presented in part by the Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie Charitable Foundation, supporting The Magic Castle for nearly four decades.
Proceeds from the Brookledge-style salute to variety artists will benefit the Dai Vernon Foundation, which provides financial aid to those pursuing an education; launching ambitious performance, research or historical projects; and those in difficult circumstances or suffering hardships. It also conducts community outreach via performances at hospitals and other charitable organizations. Over the years, the foundation has provided grants to hundreds of magicians, performers and employees in need, including 165 COVID relief grants over the past year.
This benefit will feature a who’s who of magic and Hollywood, including Neil Patrick Harris, Dick & Arlene Van Dyke, David Copperfield, Penn & Teller, Paul Reubens, Larry Wilmore, Jason Alexander, Michael Carbonaro & Peter Stickles, Puddles Pity Party and Moby. Special appearances by Rob Zabrecky, Marawa Wamp, Basil Twist & Ken Ard, Shoot Ogawa, Steven Banks, Aaron Grooves, Armen Ksajikian and more. Hosted by Two-Headed Dog (Jim Turner & Mark Fite) and Liberty Larsen.
The event will also offer a personal tour by Liberty Larsen, a rare glimpse into the location considered the “forerunner” to the AMA’s world-famous clubhouse, The Magic Castle, the historic Brookledge estate, owned by the Larsen family, founders of the Magic Castle.

(** Please note - the fundraiser will be archived so you can watch it at another time.. )
Although on hiatus during the pandemic, The Brookledge Follies, an invitation-only, “contemporary Vaudeville,” variety-and-magic show, is performed once a month (April-November) in the estate’s small theater. The free show has become one of the hottest tickets in town and is frequently attended by such Hollywood elite as Sophia Vergara, Joe Manganiello, Ryan Gosling, Jason Alexander, Christina Hendricks, Jason Sudukis, Danny Elfman, Matthew Gubler, Randy Newman, Paul Reubens and director John Landis, to name a few.
Launched with a bequest from the estate of renowned close-up magician Dai Vernon—the only magician to ever fool Harry Houdini—upon his death in 1992, the Dai Vernon Foundation, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, aides, elevates and recognizes practitioners and supporters of the art of magic at all levels and in all walks of life.
The history of the Brookledge estate …
The Magic Castle was founded by writer, actor, magician and entrepreneur Milt Larsen (formerly a writer for the 1956-77 television show Truth or Consequences); his late brother, Bill Larsen, Jr. (a former producer of the Danny Kaye and Jonathan Winters variety shows); and Bill’s wife, Irene, who remained the Castle’s ever-gracious hostess until her death in February 2016.
Members of the Larsen family have been performing magic continuously since the mid ’20s, with the fourth generation now on stage. Milt and Bill’s parents, Geraldine (“Geri”) and William Larsen, Sr., both performed as professional magicians and are noted pioneers in the art. Beginning during the Depression in the late ’30s (the Vaudeville era), the family—now including Bill, Jr., and Milt—began touring as the “Larsen Family of Magicians,” playing upscale, resort hotels in southern California.
A stage constructed at their historic Brookledge estate—built in 1933 in L.A.’s Hancock Park and purchased by the Larsens in 1942 from the founder of the Thayer Magic Company, which they also acquired—became an informal gathering place for the magic community of the day. Virtually every famous name in illusion visited and performed at the estate, often referred to as the “forerunner to the Magic Castle.” Retired from life on the road and managing the magic apparatus company, Bill, Sr., dreamed of opening an elegant, private clubhouse for magicians, but died at just 48.
In 2009, Erika Larsen (Bill, Jr.’s daughter), who resides at the estate, created The Brookledge Follies, a “contemporary Vaudeville” variety-and-magic show performed once a month (April-November) in the small theater, which holds just 60 people. Although currently on hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, attendance is by invitation only, but the free show has become one of the hottest tickets in town and is frequently attended by a who’s who of Hollywood like Moby, Sophia Vergara, Joe Manganiello, Ryan Gosling, Jason Alexander, Christina Hendricks, Matthew Gubler, Randy Newman, Paul Reubens and director John Landis, to name a few.
About her childhood, Erika recalls magic’s most famed faces around the Larsen home and laughs, “We did see the best of the best in magic, but I grew up in a bubble. My siblings and I just thought that’s what people did—Make things disappear and carry a deck of cards everywhere.”
The elder Larsens launched Genii magazine in 1952 (its circulation considered a loose affiliation of magicians that later became the AMA’s initial membership), which is the longest, continually published magic magazine in the world.
The Magic Castle was originally constructed as the Rollin B. Lane residence (a wealthy banker and his socialite wife), built among Los Angeles’ orange groves in 1909-10. Externally, the Gothic Renaissance chateau is the mirror image of the Kimberly Crest house and gardens in Redlands, Calif. The Hollywood mansion had fallen into disrepair by the late ’40s (even serving for a time as a boarding house). In 1962, Milt Larsen approached his brother about reviving their father’s dream of a private club for magicians and, after securing a lease from the owner of Hollywood’s Yamashiro restaurant (next door) with a handshake, began restoring the landmark mansion to its former opulence.
The Magic Castle intertwines illusion and mystery with the history of the Los Angeles area. Much of the ornate décor was rescued from the wrecking ball on construction sites or from Hollywood studio sets before being dumped into the trash (long before the practice of salvaging became chic). John Shrum, former art director for NBC and The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson, was also an avid Castle enthusiast. (Look for the famous talk show’s original “cityscape” backdrop in the Owl Bar.) Many other AMA members, also well positioned within the entertainment industry, have left their personal imprints on the Magic Castle as well.
