The Crinoline Skirt – A Victorian Fashion Trap
Tumblr media
Andreas Hunæus (Danish, 1814 - 1886) • Princess Dagmar of Denmark with her dog • 1860s
A crinoline (/ˈkrɪn. əl. ɪn/) is a stiff or structured petticoat designed to hold out a skirt, popular at various times since the mid-19th century. Originally, crinoline described a stiff fabric made of horsehair ("crin") and cotton or linen which was used to make underskirts and as a dress lining. – Wikipedia
While the crinoline skirt was fashionable, it could also be very dangerous to wear. It is said that at least a few dozen women died in the mid-1800s because the widened skirts caught on things such as carriage wheels and machinery and also posed a fire hazard. A March 16, 1858 article from the New York Times described an incident where a woman's crinoline-widened skirts caught fire and she died. The same article discussed many such deaths occurring in London in the preceding months as well. The article went on to caution women about wearing such large skirts, because of the danger that they posed.
The crinoline hoop was pattened in April, 1856 by a Paris fashion designer.

There was much attention given to the crinoline by the media of its time, not only cautioning women about the dangers of this fashion contraption, but also ridiculing it through caricatures.

Well they could have made it a bit more blue couldn’t they?! A many shaded mid 1920s sequin fest which would suit a landlocked mermaid should she find herself in a party frame of mind. Via MoMu Fashion Museum Antwerp.

We're a bit too late to post these A.F. Vandevorst FW06 corset booties because they were definitely Morticia worthy for halloween. They are the sexiest shoes we ever had, from the back lacing to the curved side silhouette. This particular version wasn't worn on the FW2006 runway. MoMu Antwerp has the beige version. But lets be honest: ours or better. Making them into an ankle boot elongated the back lacing and added curves, almost making the lacing follow the shape of the female silhouette. Plus they are black. Also, they are black. For reference we added some close ups from the fall 2006 runway where you could see corsetry lacing throughout the collection. Together with the juxtaposition of delicate lace lingerie worn under military coats. Which we can only interpret as: These girls are ready to serve. #afvandevorst #corset #boots #lingerie https://www.instagram.com/p/CkdqlQ8j1Gp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

for the duos. johnny & yosaku and/or, alternatively, two characters who i think would either instantly become besties or immediately kill each other: cavendish & duval
Okay, I'm gonna have to run with Cavendish & Duval, cos, even though I love Johnny & Yosaku, I came to One Piece piecemeal, and don't really have a strong vibe with them!
Tumblr media
Okay, this is a ship made in farcical hell, and even though either character feels that they have suffered more, it's a hell of their own making. If they were to be besties, rather than primps to lovers, then Cavendish might be able to help Duval with that wink thing, if he so desired. Probably out of ...
...annoyance rather than any wish to give the competition (in popularity stakes) the edge. I'm not sure which inanimate objects I'd compare these two to, but maybe a chaise longue (yes, I looked it up)

or something like this but not car seats for Cavendish in particular
Tumblr media
If they were to sniff each other through the door first, it'd be because Cavendish was spraying cologne on himself and the room with one of these
Tumblr media
And cos Duval had gone mad with the Axe Body Spray. I can see a mentor/mentee relationship developing. Cavendish having been born beautiful, and Duval learning the ropes as the newly initiated.

Baloji Augurism is a Belgian-Congolese artist who produces films, photography and installations based on afro-futurist garments they create. One installation that particularly interested me included a tree made from wires, with phones hanging like fruit along the branches. I felt that this sort of installation could provide some inspiration for how to display my work.

At the entrance of the museum, there was a touchscreen where you could interact with items in the museum's archives. Clicking on each item brought it up larger where you could interact with it, giving it anonymous likes. I really enjoyed this form of presenting an archive and wondered if an approach like this could be taken in presenting an archive of memes.

The body seen in the mirror: fashion and psyche
The body seen in the mirror: fashion and psyche
“Mirror, mirror on the wall…”: the famous words of the evil queen in Snow White inspire the title of the new exhibition underway at MoMu, the Fashion Museum in Antwerp, ‘Mirror Mirror – Fashion & the Psyche’, open until 26 February and also extending into Dr. Guislain Museum, in the building in Ghent that used to be Belgium’s oldest psychiatric hospital. In referring to the fairy-tale (which,…

Fashion Museum Bath.
"Friday Treat Time and a perfect mini-mantua from the 1760s! Standing at just 60cm tall, this beautiful fashion doll’s dress is made of yellow, silver and cream brocade woven striped silk and decorated with metal thread lace, spangles and silk ribbon flowers 💛 Miniature dresses like this one were used to transmit information about the latest fashions in Paris to the aristocrats of eighteenth century Europe, and there are accounts of perfectly coiffured and fully dressed fashion dolls travelling as far as Constantinople and St. Petersburg.
We’re thrilled to announce that this very special object from the Fashion Museum collection is currently off on its travels again and is now on display in the exciting new ‘MIRROR MIRROR – Fashion & the Psyche’ exhibition opening tomorrow at MoMu - Fashion Museum Antwerp".
