So whats it like having illustration for a job? Or was it graohic design? It was something along those lines right?
i do both actually! to be honest i just call myself a freelancer, since i do whatever people will hire me for. most of my gigs are theatre related, usually stage design + costuming, and then also stage photography/documentation. a lot of my graphic design and illustration work is also usually theatre related as well; i do logo designs for small theatre companies and a lot of posters/graphics + tour marketing campaigns. this book contract i just finished is the biggest illustration job i've done just solely by itself (cover + 13 full page interiors), whereas normally the illustration/drawing work i do is a part of another job; like hand-drawing a logo or doing big scenic painting. the biggest physical 'illustration job' i did was for the set of my thesis show in undergrad, where i painted custom portraits of queen victoria that got blown up to 20ft tall (don't ask), a ted harrison style 30ft mountain range backdrop, and a custom hand drawn+painted 30ft floral mandala for the turntable in the stage. yes that was all for the same show and yes it took me almost a year to design everything.
to get back to your question though, it's like being any other kind of freelance worker, i suppose. i had a lot of fun with this book contract and i'd love to do more, but it just depends on what gigs find me first.

Motifs d'Artistes

I’m so sorry if you’ve already answered this somewhere, but how do you design your characters?
I’ve been trying to make an OC from the prohibition era and it turns out there’s basically nothing to work with for men’s outfits, so I’m curious how you made this many that look unique and fitting to the characters
There is so much to work with, though! You will tend to find more of a focus on variety in women's fashion, but there is still quite a lot of menswear to ogle too. I suppose it's just a matter of searching out ideas and inspiration in the rights corners. Here are a few suggestions:
Old Clothing Catalogues -
Collections from Sears-Roebuck and other popular clothing retailers are pretty easy to find compiled into relatively inexpensive books, or just floating online.
Tumblr media
A fair bit of it is in the public domain now.
--Here's an entire 1922 catalogue of stuff to flip through.
-----------------
Contemporary Artwork -
Some phenomenal illustrators were working in this field amidst the "Golden Age of Illustration" and featured prominently on the covers of magazines and on the ads inside. There was a lot of emphasis on fashion.
Tumblr media
Collier's and The Saturday Evening Post are a couple of the more prominent and easily searchable resources. The costuming on the cover art always has a lot of personality.
Tumblr media
There's Rockwell, of course, and it's almost impossible to go wrong with J. C. Leyendecker. He's probably best known for his Arrow Collar ad art, but even his sock ads are like…
Tumblr media
There were numerous other amazing and influential illustrators working at the time too. Here's a list of some of them. Here's a bonus Henry Raleigh featuring some of his fabulously-dressed people.
Tumblr media
-----------------
Blogs and Articles -
There are so many of them! If you want historical accuracy, be wary of write-ups pulling all of their references from film and television. There's nothing wrong with using those for inspiration if you aren't too concerned with historicity, but there are some pretty comprehensive and well-researched things out there with more of an eye on actual fashion history too:
--Gentleman's Gazette - What Men Really Wore in the 1920s
--The Fashionisto - 1920s Men's Fashion
-----------------
Digital Collections -
There are numerous digital historic image collections stemming from universities, museums, libraries, and the government that are free to peruse too.
--The Metropolitan Museum has a searchable catalog of exhibits that includes fashion and photos
--Here's some things from the New York Public Library
-----------------
Photos at Large -
If you aren't sure where to start, image searching for any of Hollywood's early celebrities will typically turn up a bevy of production stills and promotional photography featuring a variety of fashions. Here's a random Getty images search for Harold Lloyd. A lot of standard 3 piece suits, but a lot of stuff with added character too.
Tumblr media
Photography was generally quite accessible by the 1920s, though, and you can find a lot of authentic photos of people from all walks of life, out in the wild wearing all sorts of clothes.
Tumblr media
This is by no means the limit to the resources available, but hopefully it'll provide some leaping-off points for designing looks for your characters!

10. A Sojourn in London
Tumblr media
Bucky and Steve might be high Society in America, part of the Senatorial ruling class, but they aren’t actual royalty. The Duke and Duchess of Kent however, are. And their living accommodations reflect it.
The carriage pulls through to the inner courtyard at Kensington Palace, and Steve offers his hand to help Bucky down. He takes his arm as they’re guided into the palace and shown the way to a grand ballroom. Bucky has to double check that his mouth is closed a few times as he looks around.
There are lots of other people, all just as finely or better dressed than Steve and Bucky are. Bucky catalogues the number of diamonds and other jewels that he can see adorning the heads and dripping from the throats of all the ladies, quickly deducing that, outside of the British Museum’s Crown Jewels exhibit, he’s never been surrounded by such wealth. “Jeez,” he mutters to Steve. “The Queen’s not making an appearance, is she?”
Steve chuckles and mutters back, “I don’t think so, Buck.”
Bucky smiles politely at the first two couples who come up to introduce themselves and chat. The Lady Cavendish is alpha and there with her beta husband. Another, Lord Barrows, is with both of his triad. The alphas both talk with Steve and eventually Bucky joins in. But the group gets quiet when he does. Lady Cavendish seems taken-aback. “My,” she says, looking unsure if she should be amused or annoyed. “You Americans certainly have relaxed manners.”
Bucky frowns, not understanding her meaning but pretty sure that he’s just been insulted. Steve’s hand comes out and pulls Bucky in against his side, almost possessively. “You’ll have to forgive my husband,” he says. “He’s never traveled enough to acquaint himself with European customs.”
Lord Barrows and his spouses smile and nod, and Bucky is left both confused and annoyed. He can’t help feeling that he’s being laughed at. “What?” he asks, peeved.
Steve squeezes him the tiniest bit tighter against his side at his tone. “It’s customary in British society for Spouses to wait on their Headship for invitation into the conversation,” he tells Bucky.
Bucky can tell from Steve’s tone that he’s trying to appear in-control to the other people. He can also definitely tell that Steve is waiting for him to blow up. Though he does feel indignation zip through him at hearing such antiquated nonsense, Bucky doesn’t say anything more than, “Oh.”
Steve seems relieved. His hold on Bucky relaxes. “That’s alright, darling. You didn’t know.”
Bucky wants to make a face at Steve calling him ‘darling’. It’s so obviously faked. Sure, Bucky understands that airs have to be put on at Society functions, but he’s not used to it with Steve. He doesn’t like it. “I’d be interested to know what other customs I’m ignorant of,” he muses, then pauses to look at the other two alphas. “That is, if I’ve been ‘invited into the conversation’?” He looks wide-eyed at Steve, pretending like he cares.
Steve’s lips quirk the barest amount, but he nods and says, “Of course.”
“Oh thank you, husband,” Bucky simpers. He doesn’t think the other guests are aware of how close he is to gagging. He looks back over to Lady Cavendish and her husband. “Well?” he asks. “What else should I know?”
“Your fashions are more liberal,” Lady Cavendish says. Now she looks mostly amused by Bucky, if also somewhat disapproving. She nods to her beta and says, “What do you think, Dear?”
Lord Cavendish perks up at his chance to speak. “Yes, I had noticed that.” His eyes run up and down Bucky’s outfit like he’s found several things lacking. It makes Bucky uncomfortable, and he has to fight not to squirm and look down at himself. “Your wrists are covered,” the other man notes. “No beta in London Society would be caught in public with such an ill-tailored jacket.”
Bucky flushes. “It’s not ill-tailored,” he snaps. He’d noticed after a turn of the ballroom that all the other married betas’ suits and dress sleeves don’t reach past their wrist bones, leaving their wedding wristbands on full display. “It’s what’s fashionable.”
Cavendish Shrugs. “In America, perhaps.”
“In the twentieth century!” Bucky scowls. “Christ. Get over yourself. Not everyone needs to advertise themselves like property.”
Lord Cavendish doesn’t say anything back to him, just stands there smugly at having gotten such a reaction out of Bucky. His wife, however, says, “Well I never,” as if that fully-encapsulates her disdain for Bucky’s attitude.
Maybe it does, because the next thing Bucky knows, Steve is gripping him by the back of the neck, jostling him in a classic scruff. Bucky’s mouth falls open at the domineering gesture, a surprised sound leaving him without his permission. The shock of the action outweighs any outrage he might otherwise feel. “I’m sorry,” Steve is apologizing to the group. “Please, do excuse us.”
The two other Headships titter as Steve steers Bucky away. Bucky goes red all the way to his ears, he’s sure of it. Steve has gotten him out into the hallway before Bucky can manage to react in any way, which is good news, because he’s not sure what he might have yelled at those people, if given the chance. He jerks out of Steve’s hold the second they’re alone in the hall. “Are you fucking kidding me?!” he yells, relieved when Steve lets him go. “Scruffing me? In front of a whole room full of people?!”
“Bucky, calm down.”
He glowers at Steve, feeling like his head is going to explode. “What the hell, Steve!”
Steve steps into his space, pressing him against the wall. “Lower. your. voice.”
Bucky would scream, if Steve hadn’t just Voiced the specific command to do the opposite at him. “How could you do that?” he hisses instead, feeling betrayed. “How? Are you trying to humiliate me?”
Steve shakes his head. “No. Of course not. It’s their custom, Buck. I couldn’t be seen to do nothing when you spoke to them like that. I told you: everything’s a lot more formal over here.”
Bucky growls. “You didn’t have to do that.” He hasn’t seen an adult, let alone an adult beta, be scruffed by their Headship in public in he doesn’t know how many years. It’s a demeaning, authoritative sort of thing. Bucky feels like crawling into the ground, knowing that a ballroom full of British Society just witnessed it being done to him. “I hate you,” he spits.
Steve sighs. “No, you don’t.”
“I do!”
“Shh!” Steve looks reproachfully at him. “I can’t let you disrespect our union in front of those people, Bucky.”
“I wasn’t!”
“To them, you were.” Steve looks pointedly at him. “And you know it, too. You were being rude.”
“So what?” Bucky snaps.
“Seriously?” Steve frowns at him. “Do you want me to have to discipline you? Because I will, if you keep this up in public.”
Someone nearby clears their throat, and both Steve and Bucky’s heads turn to see Lord Barrows standing there. “Sorry,” he says, not looking sorry at all. He steps over and pulls something from under his dress coat, handing it to Steve.
Bucky’s eyes widen when he sees what it is. “The fuck?” he breathes before he can help it. “You carry a cane on you?”
Barrows smiles at Bucky like he’s a misbehaving child, but he speaks to Steve. “It’s a switch. I thought you might need it.” His eyes flick over Bucky, then Back to Steve. “See you at the dinner table, yes?” He turns and starts walking away.
“Um, yeah,” Steve mutters. He waits until Barrows is gone before turning back to Bucky. He holds the switch between them, looking just as shocked as Bucky feels. “Well.”
Bucky’s belly flips at the implicit threat of the implement. He doesn’t like seeing it in Steve’s hand, wants to knock it to the floor. “Christ,” he mutters. “These people live in the fucking dark ages.”
“They’re strict.”
“Ya think?” Bucky scoffs.
“All Senatorial Households have canes,” Steve says. “Even your family must’ve.”
“Not as an amenity for dinner guests to use!” Bucky snatches the switch from Steve’s hand and holds it in front of his face. “You’d seriously hit me with this?”
“Senator?” Both Bucky and Steve’s heads whip up again. It’s Lady Cavendish this time. She looks distinctly interested in what she’s interrupted as she informs them, “Dinner is about to be served. Everyone is convening in the dining room.”
"Butt out!" Bucky snaps.
“Thank you,” Steve says. “We’ll be there presently.”
Lady Cavendish affords them one last, curious glance, then nods and hurries out of sight. Steve turns his attention back to Bucky. He looks very displeased. He holds out his hand. “Give me that. Now.”
Bucky gulps. Slowly, not wanting to, he gives the switch to Steve. He’s unable to tear his eyes away from the sight of Steve’s fingers curling around the handle. “Are you going to hit me?” he asks, surprised by how tiny his voice sounds when it comes out.
Steve sighs heavily. “No, Bucky. I’m not.” He sets the switch aside. “I’d never hurt you like that. Not for anything so minor.”
Privately, Bucky wonders what infraction would be serious enough in Steve’s book to warrant such a punishment. He decides against asking. “I don’t want to go back in there,” he says instead. “They’ll all think you were out here punishing me.”
Steve arches an eyebrow. “Nothing wrong with that.”
“Hey!”
“Come on," he says, with a bit of a snicker. He takes Bucky's arm and guides him back out to the ballroom. “Try and act like a properly admonished Spouse now, would you?”
Bucky makes a low growling sound, but says nothing. They are only steps away from entering the dining room, after all.
Tumblr media
Dinner isn’t much better than the ballroom, unfortunately. The upside is that, once again, Bucky's not expected to participate in any of the conversation. So he can just focus on eating his—delicious, he must admit—food. The downside is that he has to wait for Steve to serve that food to him.
He's taken aback when he first notices it: the footmen bringing the courses out and setting them down only in front of the alphas. Bucky stares at a triad across the table as the Headship moves some of the food from her plate onto her beta’s plate, and then some onto her omega’s. Bucky flushes, suddenly remembering how that’d been one of the customs he’d observed when his father had brought him to a British state dinner when he was younger. Seeing it again, and especially with Steve sitting next to him as his Alpha, is oddly mortifying. Bucky has to wait while Steve is served his dish and the lid is pulled off. Steve looks over at him expectantly. “Well?”
“Seriously?” Bucky hisses. The other Spouses all have polite phrases that they use to ask their Alphas to be served. Steve smirks at Bucky as he waits for a response. “You’re enjoying this,” Bucky accuses, and the alpha shrugs.
“Maybe a little. Here.” He takes Bucky’s plate and gives him well over half the portion. “I’m not actually going to make you say it.”
Bucky grunts, angry but also a little bit pleased that Steve is ladling over most of the spinach puffs. I’d rather starve, is what he thinks, but out loud he says, “Well ... good.”
The rest of the dinner is spent in a similar, mildly-torturous fashion. Bucky sits quiet and pretty and lets Steve serve him each course, and he observes all of the Triads with their proper etiquette and rigidly defined roles, how insipidly all the beta and omega Spouses behave. He imagines his life, spent stifled and serving Steve in mundane ways, watching some faceless omega inevitably claim all of Steve’s sexual interest and produce children for him while Bucky slowly goes insane from the boredom of an unimpressive, domestic life.
When the Headship of the Triad directly across the table from them makes a rather obnoxious joke about omega suffrage—and Steve laughs along, mind you (Bucky doesn’t care if it's forced or not)—Bucky makes up his mind that he’s not going to let this happen to him. He’s not going to become one of those beta Spouses across the dining table, not going to resign himself to a life as an invisible Second who takes only what he's given and says 'thank you' for it.
Omegas and betas don’t have the right to divorce their Head of Household, but Alphas can choose to initiate the process if they wish. With the dowry to protect his family now permanently secured, Bucky makes a decision right then and there to do everything he can to drive Steve away.
If he can make Steve want a divorce, he’ll be free.

The Restoration of the Royal East India Volunteers Flags
Tumblr media
The British Library is celebrating the completion of a four-year project to conserve two unique but badly degraded silk flags dating from the 1790s.
The flags are a set of colours belonging to the Royal East India Volunteers formed by the East India Company in London during the French Wars to protect East India House and the Company warehouses ‘against hazard from insurrections and tumults’ and to assist the City government in times of disorder.
The REIV were embodied at two separate periods, from 1796 to 1814 and then from 1820 to 1834.  The field officers were elected from Company directors, and commissioned officers were recruited from clerks and officials at East India House and the warehouses.  The supervisory grades in the warehouses became non-commissioned officers who led labourers serving as privates. By 1799 there were three regiments with about 1500 men.  A register of labourers in the REIV soldiers 1820-1832 has survived giving age, height, home address, reason for discharge from the corps.  Some men were discharged because training clashed with their warehouse duties or secondary afternoon jobs. Others were judged unfit to serve – Charles Twort was discharged for having bad feet and corns.
Tumblr media
Each REIV regiment had a set of colours.  It appears that Lady Jane Dundas embroidered all three sets. Her husband Henry Dundas wrote to Company director David Scott on 4 November 1796 that Lady Jane had taken a fancy that she ought to work a pair of colours for the East India Corps and that she needed instructions. Lady Jane presented the colours at three public ceremonies in April 1797, July 1797, and June 1799.
One set of colours was presented to the re-embodied REIV on 14 June 1821. When the REIV was finally disbanded in 1834, these colours were deposited in the museum at East India House. Sir George Birdwood found the colours later in the 19th century at the India Store Depôt at Lambeth and placed them in the Military Committee Room at the India Office in Whitehall.  They were still on display in Whitehall as late as 1963.
In 1895 the colours were lent to Empire of India Exhibition at Earl’s Court.  The catalogue described them as ‘tattered and torn in the most approved fashion but no tale of glory hangs thereby. Only in marches and reviews in London Fields did these colours wave to the breeze, and damp and the ravages of rats and mice are responsible for their present condition’.
Tumblr media
The colours had become fragile, fragmentary and soiled. Large areas of silk loss made the flags very hard to interpret. Surprisingly, the complex embroideries which decorated the centre of the flags were predominately intact although structurally very weak.
The conservation treatment of these two flags included: surface cleaning; removal of the central embroideries; wet cleaning; crease removal; mounting on a padded board covered by a digitally printed image of the flag to enable interpretation and covering with a specially dyed nylon net which prevents the loss of the fragmentary silk.
The conservation will enable access, display and research by ensuring the longevity of these precious and important flags.

The Little Foot Page (c. 1905) by Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale
"Jan Marsh and Pamela Gerrish Nunn note in their catalogue for Manchester City Art Galleries 'Pre-Raphaelite Women Artists' exhibition, that it seems fitting that only a few years after this painting was exhibited, female art students began to cut their hair in the 'page boy' style. This iconic work, with its glamorous depiction of Helen's androgynous appearance, may therefore have played a small part in the development of woman's fashion." (from: liverpoolmuseums.org)

Elsa Schiaparelli
Dylis E. Blum
Exposition Musée de la mode et du textile, Paris 17 mars-29 août 2004
UCAD, Paris 2004, 320 pages, 25x31,3cm, ISBN 2901422764
euro 120,00

hi!! i first wanted to say that your art has been really inspirational for me getting back into digital art and i’m incredibly grateful for that!!❤️ also wanted to ask what era of fashion do you tend to enjoy drawing and if there are any places for clothing references you use in particular? thanks!!
Hello, thanks a lot !! There are a lot of historical periods that inspire me clothing-wise and it really depends on what my current hyperfixation is. Obviously, I'm really into musketeer stuff these days so I'm deep into 17th century fashion.
When it comes to middle ages, I'm not super knowledgable about most of it but I love early medieval craftswork and jewelry and I use it as an inspiration a lot like in this. I also love late medieval/early renaissance clothing, so mostly 15th century stuff.
There's also a big chunk of time from the 1790s to the 1830s more or less with a huge variety of styles that I really like, it's kind of vague but what can I say !! They kept on serving ! I also love the 70s lol
As for references, I use online museum collections a lot. These days I often hang out on the Victoria & Albert Museum website for example, they have a good chunk of the collections digitized and tagged by era/type of garment, etc. I have a few exhibitions catalogues in my library that I use sometimes, as well as Racinet's Costume History, which isn't perfect but can help with grasping changes in silhouettes and so on.
And of course, portraiture is always a really good base so I compile a lot into pinterest boards, like you do.

IS ELEANORE BROKE? EX-PRINCESS’ DRESSES, ACCESSORIES TO BE SOLD AT AUCTION
Is Brindleton’s favourite former Princess struggling to make ends meet?
Rumours of E’s financial struggles emerged this week when some of her couture pieces were included in the most recent catalogue of an upscale auction house in Champs les Sims, the same one E was seen visiting last month.
The “Eleanore Collection” is composed of three designer dresses, a pair of crystal-embellished high heels, and a bespoke (and monogrammed) luxury leather purse.
Tumblr media
(Above: An auction house employee adds finishing touches and adjusts the mannequin donning one of Eleanore’s dresses.)
Among those offered for sale is a blue gown which Eleanore wore for a private portrait a couple of years ago, as well as a short floral dress she wore during a trip to the Brindleton Stock Exchange a while back.
The auction house confirmed in a statement that the items are indeed pieces from the Eleanore’s personal collection. The items will be available for bidding sometime later this month and a portion of the sales will be donated to Eleanore’s charity of choice. Meanwhile, the items are currently on display at their Champs Les Sims main showroom:
“Yes, the item are from Princess Eleanore’s personal vault, and she has graciously allowed us to sell it on her behalf and offer it for this month’s upcoming auction. A part of the proceeds will benefit three charities of her choosing.”
Tumblr media
(Above: Remember THIS dress? Eleanore’s custom sheer black dress that divided public opinion was also put up for auction.)
Another piece offered for sale to the highest bidder is E’s now-iconic sheer black dress which caused quite a stir at the red carpet. E wore the bespoke designer dress, which features a strapless mini dress and a sheer mesh overlay, to a fashion show a few years back. While the bold outfit won E praises with the fashion crowd, it also managed to raise quite a few eyebrows, with some remarking that the look in general was highly inappropriate for a senior member of the Royal Family.
The auction house also said that they are expecting the items to raise as much as §1.5 million collectively. The high price tag is reportedly anticipated because of the items’ “royal provenance.”
Tumblr media
(Above: Want to dress like a princess? The floral dress was worn by E during one of her official engagements a few years back. The stunning blue gown, meanwhile, was what she wore for one of her official portraits.)
Rumours of the ex-princess’ financial woes has been going around for a while now, following her being taken off the royal payroll. Eleanore stopped receiving “royal allowance” from taxpayers after she was formally removed from the line of succession. Her parents have reportedly stopped supporting her financially as well, and was even stripped of her security and staff. However, she bounced back eventually as her then fiancé came to her rescue and she became Al-Simhara’s “adopted” daughter pending their marriage.
Sadly, following the end of her engagement, the financial rumours again circulated, with some going as far as to claim that Eleanore has been reduced to mooching off of her wealthy friends to get by, and that her friends have slowly been cutting her off. However, no one seems to have come forward to corroborate the allegations.
Tumblr media
(Above: [L] Also up for sale is a custom orange leather purse bearing E’s former royal monogram on the lower right corner. [R] E is also selling a pair of jewel-encrusted black heels with solid yellow gold accents to the highest bidder.)
One rumour we CAN confirm, however, is that Eleanore is now actually employed. A reliable source tells us that E was recently hired as a Gallery Exhibition Manager at a small Champs Les Sims gallery:
“She’s been looking to put her Art History degree to good use, and has been dropping her resume around for quite a while now. I think it was last week when she was finally hired by a small private gallery as an Exhibition Manager. The owner is a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend of E’s and was at first a little hesitant to take her on. In the end, she managed to land the job.”
Look, we see absolutely nothing wrong with selling a few pre-loved items, and for a good cause, too! We’re actually quite pleased with the fact that she’s well on her way to financial independence! After all, the woman has bills to pay! Colour us impressed, E!

oh my god. joshneku 10, 30, 31, 60. please.
10: Describe their first date.
First date that they both understand to be a date. Joshua asks Neku out "as a joke," only to have Neku take him up on it.
"Okay," he says, "name your terms."
Joshua is suspicious but intrigued. This sounds like a game. Joshua likes games. He asks if there's a prize. Neku turns a little warm around the cheeks and says there can be. Immediately, he can see he has Joshua's full attention.
Neku scrambles to keep this in hand before homicide becomes involved. Prizes need a win condition, he reasons. Joshua wants to go back to what the prize entails. Neku tells him to shut up and help him pick a way to win their date. Joshua immediately vetos truth or dare, suspicious again. Fine. No probing questions. No UG involvement either. Neku shuts down the mention of a timer before suggesting a scavenger hunt. He'll name an item for Joshua to locate, and then they switch once he's found it. They'll go for a walk, and then for dinner while they play. Joshua frowns. This doesn't sound that interesting, but it doesn't sound like a trap either. He again wants to know about the prize.
Neku hasn't thought of one yet.
Scratch that, not entirely true. He hasn't thought of one he's comfortable suggesting at the moment. Neku says they can work that out when they get to it. Joshua looks annoyed by this point, but agrees, arms crossed and pouting.
Neku can salvage this. Neku can salvage this fast.
"First challenge," he announces, feeling bold, smiling nervously, and sure he's warm enough to be radiating clear across the road. Joshua will get the hint. "Find my tongue."
30: Your OTP gets to pick out each other's outfits; what is each wearing?
The problem here starts with Joshua believing that people, and moreso people who are exhibiting a behaviour in his direction, are more likely than not going to try to get one over on him. His options, to his mind, are a) to open his soft, fluttery heart to Neku, putting him in something both handsome and comfortable, betraying all the care and attention he's carefully catalogued about Neku's preferences right down to fabric texture, cut, and colour coordination, and risk being made a fool of in return (likely, as even well-meaning, Neku has no compatible fashion sense), or b) put Neku in something mildly embarrassing and leave him self-conscious about it, enjoying the show with no risk of being alone in his predicament.
Which is all to say: Neku doesn't end up in much of anything at all.
Joshua knows Neku's hot, and he's showing it off. He'll have the relevant assets showcased, brightly framed, accessorised, and vacuum fitted. Maybe some short heels to emphasise the legs without tripping him or making Joshua look too small at his side. People are going to stare. Joshua wants them to stare, which is why the outfit is exclusively neons. If nothing else, people won't be looking at whatever Neku has *him* in. Neku is expecting this. He knows Joshua knows he's expecting this. Joshua knows Neku knows he knows Neku is expecting this. Neku's resigned to it, even if he doesn't really get it. He knows Joshua, and knows he can either prove Joshua's misgivings right by dressing him in something he'd find humiliating, or let himself be solely embarrassed in an overt gesture of spite, trust, and excruciatingly forced but ultimately tenacious naivety.
Which is how Joshua ends up in Neku's comfiest, most appalling faux sportswear, complete with the headphones collaring his neck. Neku'd sign his name, but that might be going too far. The combination means Joshua is thoroughly doomed to losing this round of wits.
31: Can they sit side by side without touching the other or are they handsy? (lacing fingers, touching knees, etc.)
Yes, they can sit without touching. Up to a point. Whoever is more jittery will find something to fuss over on the other eventually, or start knocking their shoes together "accidentally."
60: Who pulls the other closer when they’re sleeping?
Both sleeping? Neku. Joshua either sprawls or sleeps like a pretzel, neither of these with any regard for who's next to him. Neku lays half-curled on his side and cuddles in his sleep, and will attach himself to whatever of Joshua is in grabbing distance. So if Joshua is awake, which is usually, he makes sure he's within arm's reach and gets his snuggles in while Neku is 100% not going to be conscious they're happening.

Breakdown - October’s Book List
Hello! This month’s book list is about characters who are doing... okay. Yup. They’re fine. Absolutely no cause for concern. Nothing to worry about. Just happy characters in happy novels. All sunshine and rainbows :)
As always please remember to vote for which one we should read using the link at the bottom of the post.
The Bell Jar, by Syliva Path
Tumblr media
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation, by Otessa Moshfegh
Tumblr media
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, works an easy job at a hip art gallery, lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong? My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a powerful answer to that question. Through the story of a year spent under the influence of a truly mad combination of drugs designed to heal our heroine from her alienation from this world, Moshfegh shows us how reasonable, even necessary, alienation can be. Both tender and blackly funny, merciless and compassionate, it is a showcase for the gifts of one of our major writers working at the height of her powers.
Nausea, by Jean-Paul Sartre
Tumblr media
Nausea is the story of Antoine Roquentin, a French writer who is horrified at his own existence. In impressionistic, diary form he ruthlessly catalogues his every feeling and sensation about the world and people around him. His thoughts culminate in a pervasive, overpowering feeling of nausea which "spread at the bottom of the viscous puddle, at the bottom of our time, the time of purple suspenders and broken chair seats; it is made of wide, soft instants, spreading at the edge, like an oil stain." Boy Parts, by Eliza Clark
Tumblr media
Irina obsessively takes explicit photographs of the average-looking men she persuades to model for her, scouted from the streets of Newcastle. Placed on sabbatical from her dead-end bar job, she is offered an exhibition at a fashionable London gallery, promising to revive her career in the art world and offering an escape from her rut of drugs, alcohol, and extreme cinema. The news triggers a self-destructive tailspin, centred around Irina’s relationship with her obsessive best friend, and a shy young man from her local supermarket who has attracted her attention…
The Crying of Lot 49, by Thomas Pynchon
Tumblr media
Suffused with rich satire, chaotic brilliance, verbal turbulence and wild humor, The Crying of Lot 49 opens as Oedipa Maas discovers that she has been made executrix of a former lover's estate. The performance of her duties sets her on a strange trail of detection, in which bizarre characters crowd in to help or confuse her. But gradually, death, drugs, madness, and marriage combine to leave Oedipa in isolation on the threshold of revelation, awaiting the Crying of Lot 49.
Please vote for which one we should read, here.

(@wingsofachampion) Hiya! What's it like being a journalist? -Tropius
tropius bestie!! so glad to hear from you
being a battle journalist is pretty cool! a lot of late nights spent downing energy root drinks and writing but overall cant complain. i did the whole pokemon journey thing back when i was like. twelve or whatever, but it wasn't really my thing. im much more of a homebody and after losing to the elite 4 a total of five times i realized the life wasn't really for me. ive always enjoyed the strategy and tactics of pkmn battling more than the actual practice of it, so this job gives me the chance to sit back, relax, and write overly detailed analyses of what the other, more dedicated trainers are up to.
rn im still a student, but the internship im at is basically giving me the real deal battle journalist experience. usually what i'll do is attend some big battle happening near nimbasa city (usually a gym battle, but sometimes if im lucky it'll be a promo or exhibition match by two celebs) and then write up a summary of what happened as well as an rundown of the statistics of both participants' parties. i'll also interview the trainers, get some nice shots of the field, and then finally wrap it all up together in a pretty lil' article. on the occasion my boss will have me do a report thats more tangentially related to battling, so this job really keeps me on my toes (one time i had to do a review on elesa's summer catalogue, which was great because i love elesa but hell because i know jackshit about fashion).
my bf is currently still on the whole battling kick though. working as a dragon gym trainer under drayden. im so so so SO happy for him and everthing's he's done so far (he'll probably be taking drayden's place at this rate tbh) but that couldn't be me <3. im v happy on the sidelines watching him kick ass and then writing a report on it, thank you very much
