Napoleon’s fake letter to Murat

The first edition of Napoleon’s correspondence, published during the Second Empire, lists in Volume XVI on page 450 as No. 13696 a letter that Napoleon allegedly had written to Murat on 29 March 1808, while Murat was staying in Madrid, prior to the “dos de Mayo” uprising and the double abdication of Carlos and Ferdinand at Bayonne. The letter neither fits the content of Napoleon’s other verifiable letters that he did write to Murat, nor Napoleon’s usual writing style.

The historians and editors responsible for publishing the correspondence were probably quite aware that they were dealing with an apokryphe letter, judging from the long footnote they added to it:

This letter, of which no minute, original or authentic copy has ever been found, was first published in the Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène (t. IV, p. 246 et seq., ed. 1823). It has since been given again by M. de Montholon in his Récits de la Captivité, etc. (t. II, p. 451 et seq., ed. 1847). Like M. de Las Cases, M. de Montholon claims to have been told about it by the Emperor Napoleon himself. The authenticity of this document was accepted by M. de Bausset (Mémoires sur l'intérieur du Palais, etc., t. I, p. 151 et seq., ed. 1827); by M. le Duc de Rovigo (Memoires, etc., t. III, p. 258 et seq., ed. 1828); by M. Thibaudeau [...]

And if so many bonapartists with an interest to falsify history in order to make Napoleon look better than he was on this occasion, all agree that this letter is authentic, it must be true. Right?

The letter in question is several pages long, contains endless musings about the situation in Spain and, most importantly, lays the responsibility for the uprising that is about to happen squarely ate Murat’s feet, as Murat he had acted on his own accord instead of on Napoleon’s orders:

I do not approve of the decision taken by Your Imperial Highness to seize Madrid so hastily. The army should have been kept ten leagues from the capital. [...] Your entry into Madrid, by worrying the Spaniards, has served Ferdinand immensely.

This assumption is directly opposed to several - authentic - letters in which Napoleon, of course, sends Murat to the Spanish capital, orders him to get a hold on anything and anybody of importance and to, of course, use violence in case the population revolts.

So, to sum up, apparently Napoleon did take the pain to dictate a fake letter to Las Cases and/or Montholon on Saint Helena, in order to exculpiate himself and pretend that the whole quagmire in Spain had, at least to a large degree, been caused by Murat. Considering that, at the time, Murat was long dead, this is a truly perfidious act from Napoleon, destroying the reputation of a dead former friend.

Or so I thought. And because I thought that, I would like to publicly apologize now. Because I’m convinced, whoever invented this letter, it was not Napoleon: This fake letter is not in the original manuscript of Las Cases. It only shows up in the edition of 1823. So either Las Cases invented it out og his own volition. Or somebody gave him the idea. In any case, before publishing the first volumes of his grand oeuvre, Las Cases had plenty of time to meet with all kind of people who may have uttered wishes or suggestions.

I could come up with at least one name of a former monarch in Spain who was known to not be a friend of Murat’s, whose scruples in telling lies seem to have been underdeveloped and who in certain aspects may have held pretty similar views as those expressed in the fake letter... But that is utter speculation on my part.

At the time of excesses, and the hectic filming SECRET DE LA VIE (A. Whitelaw, 1974) another beautiful film, crazy (theme death, so time - extensive program), shot in Amsterdam, with K. Kinski (Also in the previous one), Tina Aumont - still adept of the bicycle (between two knots with double helix) - made piquant remarks, aiming at the author of the film.

“I am compared to nicotine: I am oxygen. (...) They think I take, but I give: I am the breath. I stimulate. I provoke. People would like to love me dead. It would be so much simpler (for them): I disturb them. But I'm alive, and I intend to continue. To live. To make movies. (...) I am not invasive, but I am a presence that can not be ignored. Whether in front of a goal or in a room, it's like that. (...) I am not an actress. Cinema is my way of life. I can not consider life without making movies".

With the exception of Jacques Richard (REBELOTE in 1983) the cinema will ignore Tina Aumont for a quarter century. Tina Aumont detonates in French cinema, cloisonné where only a few friends (Garrel) have made it turn.

The 90s: Rollin filmed for a few minutes in TWO VAMPIRE ORPHANS who could have made a singular Bathory, a video film DINOSAUR FROM THE DEEP shot in a cellar under the director's video-club, N. Moutier, square de Montholon - the film more underground than I turned loose Tina Aumont descending underground, a fantastic short ... Ultimate appearance: LA MÉCANIQUE DES FEMMES (Missoltz, 2000). The best of a movie that we would forget without it. 50 seconds. A map. Warm tones. Black dress. Red lips. Sitting at the bar of a hotel. A monologue. Smoking cigarette between the fingers. The actress seems to have staged herself. To Rémi Martin: “You know who I am ... A debauchee. Rushed! Luxurious. Corrupt. Disorderly. Immoral. Libertine. Dissolute. Voluptuous. Naughty. Fucker. Depraved. Immodest. Vicious. And despite all that, I succumb. Two cups, please, boy!” Nice exit! To revise the plan, it's a royal exit! Discreet release of a large lady. We could have hoped for a fresh start.

2002, I see Tina Aumont in a feeding area. Mystery whole, intact. Idea of a book taking her films one by one, involving a series of interviews. At first rough. She was not against it. We had to give it time. Cautious approach, like a cat. My calls refer to others. Insistent. She planned to write. Time seems to be very present for her. Saver of words. Hoarsely. Laughing gushing hoarse. It amused her when I mentioned Mary Meerson to whom she reminded me. She tells me about the streets of Briançon. Tina remembered if something was asked. I'm talking about the project to Michel Bulteau, leaving for some interviews. Time passes. The last thing considered, write these lines. Tina Aumont's life looks like a tragedy.

2/6/72. Juillet 72. Geneve

Plusieurs fois par jour, Lino m appelle. Je lui raconte ma journée, lui la sienne mais ces longues conversations nous laissent complètement frustres. ....notre seule envie est d etre dans les bras l un de l autre

Je m investis dans l organisation du concours des Amazones, obtient la parrainage de RTL et de RMC. Curd Jurgens présidera le jury de la session cannoise et Terence celle de Paris. Les lettres de candidatures affluent. Bien que les annonces précisent les mensurations exigées la moitié des candidates ne répondent pas aux critères enonces ce qui ne les empêchent pas d envoyer leurs photos prises la plupart du temps dans le plus simple appareil. Je decouvre ainsi la fascination qu exerce le cinéma !!!!

Début juillet, le tournage de Cosa Nostra se termine. Lino rejoint sa famille en Anjou

Elga et moi nous partons pour Crans sur Sierre ou nous sommes invitées par Christian Cambuzat, un ancien journaliste de France Soir qui, précurseur, a installé dans l Hotel du Golf un SPA de remise en forme et d amaigrissement ou se presseront, de nombreuses célébrités dont Johnny Hallyday.

Lino m appelle plusieurs fois par jour

Le 10 juillet un télégramme laconique "arrive mardi geneve aeroport 13h55" met enfin fin a cette attente Il y a plus d un mois que nous sommes sépares .

Sans remord, j abandonne Elga et la cure. Je n ai plus qu une obsession : être a l aeroport pour son arrivee.! Comme a Orly, je suis en avance mais mon angoisse d alors a fait place a une excitation que je controle difficilement Le vol cette fois est a l heure : je me précipite dans ses bras et m accroche a son cou comme une naufragée des qu il franchit le contrôle de police ce qui me vaudra le surnom de Sotokou. Le trajet en taxi jusqu a l hotel President sous l oeil curieux du chauffeur qui l a évidemment reconnu s avere être un supplice : quelle torture de ne pas pouvoir se serrer l un contre l autre, se toucher, s embrasser et devoir attendre de rejoindre notre suite pour laisser déferler le tsunami incontrôlable de nos corps. Hormis un diner vite bâclé dans un restaurant chinois, nous restons cloîtres dans la chambre ou les heures s écoulent comme dans un rêve. La tête nichée au creux de son épaule j ecoute Lino me raconter sa vie. Il me parle de son arrivee a Paris avec sa maman. Il a 7 ans, ne parle que l italien et l intégration n est guère aisée Pour subsister sa mère fait des ménages. Lui va a l ecole. Pour l aider financièrement il déniche un job de groom après ses heures de classe a l hotel Baudin square Montholon dans le 9ème. Chaque soir il rentre a pieds en empruntant les grands boulevards ou il passe devant des brasseries rutilantes . Deja tres gourmand il salive a la lecture des plats annonces sur un panneau racoleur installe a l extérieur de ces établissements. L un d entre eux le fascine CHATEAUBRIAND. 9,50. Son imagination le transporte dans un monde enchante : un chateau brillant. Ce doit être exceptionnel, extraordinaire pour qu il coute aussi cher ! . Toute honte bue, pendant pres d un an, il preleve jour après jour, quelques sous sur les pourboires qu il remet a sa maman. Et un soir, petit gamin en culottes courtes, il s installe a une des tables. Le serveur enveloppe dans un grand tablier blanc se penche vers lui, persuade qu il va commander une glace ou une gaufre. Je veux un chateaubriand et j ai l argent declare Lino qui extrait de ses poches la somme si péniblement récoltée qu il étale sur la table. Le garçon note la commande et vingt cinq minutes plus tard place devant Lino un steak accompagne de salade verte et de pommes sautees ainsi qu une saucière de béarnaise. Du bœuf, des pommes de terre,de la salade, sa maman lui en sert souvent ! Ce ne peut pas être cela un chateaubriand.! Décontenancé, il apostrophe le garçon. Excusez moi, j ai commandé un chateaubriand. Le garçon dénué de toute psychologie lui repond brutalement Et que crois tu que c'est mon garçon ? C est ça un chateaubriand.! En proie au plus profond désespoir Lino s enfuit du restaurant en courant, abandonnant sur la table sa petite fortune .....

Il me confia aussi qu a la même époque, il emprunte un jour la rue de Provence ou une dame de petite vertu le déniaise. Il a neuf ans !!!

En me couvrant de bisous. Lino m annonce qu il tournera en septembre LE SILENCIEUX sous la direction de Claude Pinoteau a Londres ou je le rejoindrai au Park Lane Hilton. Cette perspective l enchante car comme il n est pas connu outre Manche, nous pourrons vivre notre amour au grand jour, nous promener sans craindre de voir un paparazzi surgir a tous les coins de rue, fréquenter restaurants et clubs. Ce projet atténue quelque peu notre tristesse car ce trop bref sejour s acheve . Lino doit rejoindre sa famille et moi le coeur en berne je rentre a Paris,

Le 27 juillet, je m envole pour NY en compagnie d Alain Senderens et Michel Oliver.
