it really rubs me the wrong way that the tumblr social justice movement preaches against ableism and making fun of mentally ill/disabled people but they'll laugh at amanda bynes because QUIRKY WHITE GIRLS AM I RIGHT XD

i mean i haven't seen anyone that i follow laughin at her thank goodness. but if that is an issue and there are ppl who are doin that....i'd like to say i'm surprised but i'm not. i'm not surprised at all.

not even for the reason you think. this doesn't have anything to do w tumblr social justice at all, actually. schizophrenia is NOT a mental illness that gets any kind of productive, beneficial publicity. at all. we talk about depression after icons like Robin Williams commit suicide. hell, we'll even talk about bipolar disorder. but did you know that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are more closely related than the media would like you to believe?

bc of the stigma, we're afraid of schizophrenia. we associate it w "dangerous homeless men" and mass murderers. but actually, ppl who suffer from schizophrenia are more at risk of hurting themselves or putting themselves in dangerous situations than hurting others. there's so much misinformation about this disease. the truth is no one talks about it unless it's to vilify those who have it and turn them into some kinda spectacle or Boogie Men. "Psychopaths" have schizophrenia. not real ppl who lived productive lives and had friends and interests and hobbies before the episode that led to their diagnosis.
