To answer an implied presumption elsewhere (and the virtual eyerolls that went with it): No, I’m not nor was a horsey princess*. As I’ve mentioned before, one of my first jobs was as a stablehand.
Stiff sudsing, saddle and bridle cleaning, feeding and vitamin distribution, brushing, cleaning hooves, outfitting for turnout, I knew how to pull a mane but didn’t work at a mainly dressage stable. Gleaming-up the fancy stuff was rare.
And importantly: Muckraking. Literally. Bouncing manure and wet clumps at just the right angle on a rake to reduce hay waste as much as possible. Separating the horse$&#% from the useful stuff.
A skill I’ve long retained in both the literal and figurative sense…
🤣
*Not a knock at horsey princesses, just a clarification. I’ve known some lovely ones of very good character 🤣.

Reconciliation
(Gihyun is obviously @byrdstrolls)
(this drabble takes place several months before the current verula situation)
The silence between you two hangs heavily as the gears turn in Gi’s head. You know the rhythm of her thoughts, you could set your watch by it. You watch her wrestle with every possibility but the truth, the cynicism your death planted in her now grown to a bramble inside her. Your mouths open at the same time.
“You need a drink,” you say.
“I need a drink,” she says.
You still know the way to the Speakeasy from Gihyun's office like the back of your hand. No room for memory loss when that's all you are. The trip is quick in minutes, but an eternity in awkward silences. It's a refreshing sight to see Tiamat still tending bar like only a few nights had passed, rather than nearly a century. She makes your usual double order as quickly as ever, two fingers of scotch and a vodka Collins, hold the vodka.
After Gihyun has a few minutes to settle, to let her guard down a little bit, you decide to break the silence. It has to be you, right? You're the one who crashed back into her life with a mission, you're the one who has to justify your existence. You start small, you think.
“I know it's a lot to take in, but before you run me out of town for being a zombie, let me tell you one thing,” you bring a silk gloved hand to her cheek and make her look you in the eyes, Juliya’s eyes. “It wasn't your fault. I did everything they brought down on me and dozens of other things besides. My luck ran out and your happiness was collateral damage. I'm so sorry.”
Tears well in your eyes as you remember the trial in excruciating detail. Not for yourself, you always knew you would die like that. But the sharp knife of Gihyun's heart breaking in front of you never dulled, never stopped cutting. “God I'm so fucking sorry. Nothing hurts like love, right Gigi?”
You almost wished you were drunk, it might make what you were trying to say easier. “I'm….I'm not him, Gi. Not really. I'm her last desperate act, I'm his promise to see you again. I am her love for you and her last hope made manifest. All I'm asking for is a chance to try again, to fulfill my promise.”
Your hand drops from her cheek in the eternity it takes her to respond. Seconds, minutes, you don't know. All there is is the waiting.
“I really don’t wanna quit smoking” She says, covering her face with her hands. Perhaps both the movement and the joke are meant to conceal her tears.
The tension broken, you laugh. The sharp unmistakable laugh of Juliya Pergun, recognizable even from the wrong throat. And you think maybe this time it's all going to be okay as you wrap an arm around her shoulders. She folds into the hug so gently for someone so large.

Muckraker From the Underworld
“2 Effect Monsters Cannot be used as Link Material the turn it is Link Summoned. If a monster(s) you control would be destroyed by battle or card effect, you can Tribute 1 Fiend monster instead. You can target 1 Fiend monster in your GY, except ‘Muckraker From the Underworld’; discard 1 card, and if you do, Special Summon that monster, also you cannot Special Summon monsters for the rest of this turn, except Fiend monsters. You can only use this effect of ‘Muckraker From the Underworld’ once per turn.”

okay I'm sort of knee-deep in this personal reading project that's been spurred by the latest Phonetics vs. Whole Language Reading War, this one that was kicked off by the covid lock down. like I'm reading fucking Bush Jr. era think-tank and academic journal publications, trying to track down some older books with the access granted by my wonderful, wonderful college library card. and one thing that I'm noticing about the current (c. 2017 to present) brouhaha is that much of the journalism — the Emily Hanford podcast, the New York Times articles — are all pushing a narrative, with greater or lesser subtlety, that teachers across the country have rejected the Science of Reading.
this term though is actually somewhat obscure. what people are referring to is sometimes the whole field of literacy science starting from about the 1960's or 70's in the United States; or to eye-tracking experiments and MRI readings that have been done since about the late 80's onwards; or occasionally, in a few confusing cases, to historians, policy-makers and other non-scientists. the gist though is that is that whole language is bunk and phonetics is the gold standard, and the field of the science of reading came to a consensus about this sometime in the 90's, not too long before Bush Jr.'s first time and the adoption of the No Child Left Behind act
but as far as I can tell there is no such consensus, and that the earliest overview of research into literacy actually comes in 1967 from Jeanne Chall, ie that there was already enough of a body of literature to merit an overview by the 1960's, decades before much of the literature people are citing as a beginning. then, after Jeanne Chall, there have been multiple overviews and multiple executive inquiries into literacy, the earliest of which I've so far heard of dating from Johnson's war on poverty. and more damning, no academic publication I've seen so far has described phonics as the sole fundamental. instead there are much more measured calls for mixes of focus like "phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension". the hard consensus, if anything, is that whole language is bunk but only in the regard that it is fundamentally based on the belief that children are natural readers to the exclusion of more basic mechanical instruction like phonics, and so ignoring research that shows most children do not make the cognitive leap to basic literacy without phonics instruction

I want to be very clear. I do not want to speculate on any of the cheating Ned from Try Guys did or didn't do (we know he definitely did some).
I DO want to watch the drama from my opera box with my opera glasses while sipping something bubbly and cold, however.
So far, the show has been WILD.

Help me decide what podcast to listen to next!! :D
These are all shows I’ve had saved for a while, but haven’t gotten around to listening to. They’re also relatively short, so getting caught up with them will be pretty easy for me!
Feel free to defend your pick in the replies/comments/tags. If you don’t recognize any of them, you can pick based on which title sounds coolest, or just show results if you want :) I’ll also put my favorite shows in the tags so you can get a sense of what I like!

Promises Kept
The trouble with being a memory is that you can never forget. Every time you close your eyes, every time you slip back under the dark waters of the Holdfast's mind, you live through it all over again. Juliya's life and death, her loves and losses. The visions of your death you can handle, it's the aching in your heart that's hard to live with. The absence of a woman you remember loving so fiercely, a love that you're not sure is really even yours.
You're not him, after all, not really. You're just the ghost of the Juliya that Gihyun loves, the ghost of the Juliya that loved her. Just a promise to see her again. What right do you really have to barge into her life?
You wrestle with the idea for sweeps. And then one night, you see her. You'd think it's the trial of the century with the media coverage, but it's the Fleet's most annoying nepotism hire, Twitch Monark, pinning the death of her secretary on some poor homeless kid. It's exactly the kind of fight Gihyun lived for, and sure enough, there she is. She's older, so much more tired than when you knew her. But the fire you loved is still in there, her need to set things right burning in her eyes. And it hits you like a truck. Love, more than just a memory of it. And your question is answered. It doesn't matter if the two of you are the same people you used to be, of course you're not, but you have to try. You are a promise to see Gihyun again, and you will be kept.
.
.
.
You admire yourself in the mirror, taking in how differently your fashion fits this new body. Juliya was like a taut string, thin and sharp. Your dresses billowed around that body and added an air of mystery. Decker's body was like a coiled spring, lean but toned and powerful. Her mind, not so much. Renewed with purpose, you had pulled her into the depths of your mind, holding her there where you had been for so many sweeps.
Your routine comes back to you like it was yesterday. Buy a pack of origami paper. Get coffee, one black with two sugars and one with all the cream and sugar it could handle. Make your way to Gihyun's office. Break into Gihyun's office. Make yourself comfortable in her chair. Wait.
When Gihyun finally arrives, you are absorbed in making a little origami armadillo, feet up on her desk. You look up at her, breath catching in your throat. The way her horns frame her face, the way her cigarette dangles from her lips. God, what could you say to her? What was there to be said? Your lips move before your brain.
"You really should quit," you say in a voice that is not Juliya Pergun's and a tone that undeniably is, "Those things will kill you."
