random thoughts on Mulan (2020):
1.  “The Chi is strong with this one.”
Disney has been making the same movie over and over for the past two years.
2. “They’ll call her a witch!”
The correct response to that should be “What is a wiTcH? Some white people nonsense that won’t even be introduced into our language for centuries to come?”
Of course because Europe used to prosecute women for no reason, they assumed ancient china must have done the same.
3. The two rabbits scene is a nice addition. It is taken from the original ballad, where she stayed in the army for 12 years without being found as a woman.
4. It has been many years since I learned the ballad of mulan in school, still I think the draft system is a terrible one. Demanding one man from each family is a giant waste of potential young and healthy conscriptors.
5. The words on the sword are modern chinese characters, and I’m sure you can find the font in microsoft default.
6. The concept of “孝”(devotion to family) has oppressed women and men for thousands of years in China. It advocates blind obedience to your parents even in adulthood, and that you should live your life exactly as your parents wish because they know better. I cannot believe a movie in 2020 is digging up this word form the grave.
7. “This is my sad face. This is my curious face.”
Girl you have burned yourself. Liu Yifei can act, but she doesn’t seem to be doing it for this movie. She later has the same face while fighting, flirting, and having someone die in her arms.
8. Cricket is so precious! He is perfection everytime he is on screen. Also all the men in the army seem to be experiencing a collective gay panick.
9. Were those mulan flowers where she took a bath in the lake?
10. I like that she took the gender reveal into her own hands. “You will not reach your full potential until you live as you are.” It’s just one lesbien convincing another to come out.
But in the next moment she took off the armor that protects her main arteries. And put down her hair even it might block her vision in fighting.
11. At least a dozen people died from the fireball thing, and they only thought to check Hua Jun after the avalanche. They truely love her him her.
12. The red room Reylo scene but with Xian Lang: “ Join me. We will take our place in the kingdom.” “There’s still hope for you.” “No, it’s too late for me.”
Disney really has been making the same movie for the past two years.
13. This cast is full of lengendary action stars but the fight scenes are quite underwhelming. She can kick everything I guess. Even an arrow. Okay.
14. All supervillains can benefit from Aaron Burr’s advice. Just talk less and murder people already. Most of them would have won a hundred time easily.
15. You see Xian Lang’s change of heart from miles away but still AAAAAHHHHHHasfdjaowoiwhf! The gay is brimming out of my screen.
16. Finally, finally, FINALLY someone else dies in Liu Yifei’s arms for a change. If you are familiar with her early career you know what I’m talking about. Also they are gonna be ride-and-die lesbien lovers in my fanfic.
17. MY QUEEN Wen Ming-Na!!
18. “Rise up like a Phoenix.” from Mulan: The Real Dark Phoenix (2020)
Disney has been making the same movie, and we’ve been watching them for the past two years.
19. She rode from the imperial city to her hometown Fujian like it was easy breezy. Even her hair still had the same curls. All the soldiers also travelled right behind her just to give her a sword.
It is a frigging 2000 miles journey.
They didn’t go like, “hey you want to hang out here until we make the sword so we don’t have to ride across the country?” Also they didn’t catch up with her the entire way, only to make an entrance in front of the whole apartment building.
20. Forgot to mention the matchmaker’s actor Zheng Peipei. She played Yifei’s grandmother many years ago in a tv show. Yifei was still a teenager back then, and her character notoriously died at the end very abruptly (setting a tone for her following career). The show is a period fantacy drama that is mostly there to spite flat-earthers.
21. If I hear the words “Loyal, brave and true” one more time I swear to god
22. The end credit design is kind of awsome.
My view on this movie is mostly critical for many more reasons. They claim to have done justice to chinese culture but it is still a very poor job. Chi is to kongfu as quantum is to sci-fi, just throw the word in when you can’t explain something.
Mulan lives in a Fujian tulou building not because they have done research about the geography, but because it is a random thing in china hollywood hasn’t shot before.
And the “chosen one” narrative seems to be going through a renaissance in the past few years. I really like it when there’s nothing special about our hero, and they also struggle like the rest of us. There is something endearing and relatable about that. But it was taken away from Mulan. Now I guess you have to be special like one in a million, and be the only person who can save the dynasty, just to join the ranks of men.

Mulan 2020
Honestly? It was alright. A little bit dour compared to the cartoon. But I knew that going in. And of course there was both good and bad
Good:
I actually quite liked Chen Honghui and General Tung. Honghui wasn’t a prick as I was led to believe. I think he can accurately be described as a “simp”. And Tung was an adequate addition in his own right. Even if they were both slightly one dimensional. Honghui and Mulan were very cute together
That sweet sweet payback via the old hag fainting when the emperors guard award Mulan in public.
Mulan and Xiou’s sisterly relationship. It was nice that the derailing of the matchmaker presentation was screwed up by Mulan looking out for her sister
Yeah the fight scenes were a little bland and predictable but they were also well executed
I like Xianlang. She was interesting. Though the whole “villain sacrificing themselves for the hero” thing could’ve been done better
CRICKET!!!! So adorable. Deserved more screentime
The emperor was so badass
I appreciate the whole personal element they added to Böri Khan’s motivation. It added some depth that Shan Yu lacked
As always. The longer running time was well utilised
I loved the original films music cues they used in the sound track
Bad:
I’m still not a fan of heroes being told to keep their uniqueness under-wraps so they’re accepted. It just seems unnecessarily cruel to me
Chen Honghui and General Tung absolutely needed more development
Yet again I’m at a loss to understand the shipping between the same gender hero and villain. Their interactions were more creepy then anything else.
We deserved more of a back to back badasses moment between Mulan and the emperor
It’s almost definitely a cultural difference issue but I just can’t get behind the honour before reason mentality.
Kind of on the fence about the chi to be honest with you. It seems they were trying to be original but they became cliched because of it.
The song lyrics used as dialogue was well placed. But if they were going to do that then they should’ve just kept the songs in the first place
I feel like they missed the mark in not having Ming Na Wen as Hua Li. Still adored her cameo appearance though
Usually I love long hair. But they really should’ve had Mulan cut hers. It could still have grown out depending on the time frame
Christina Aguilera. I prefer loyal brave and true over the remastered reflection. But I kinda wish they’d gotten someone more culturally appropriate. Like the mandarin version of reflection that played at the end of the credits. I get they used her as a type of bookends/reference to the cartoon like they did with Ming Na Wen. But she just felt out of place to me. Like how Billy Magnussen felt out of place to me in Aladdin 2019
All in all a solid 7.5/10. Not horrible by any means. But certainly not very spectacular either

In Disney’s Live-Action Mulan Xianniang and Mulan are giving me reylo vibes.
I ship Mulan and Honghui SO MUCH and they develop beautifully, but I can’t help shipping Mulan x Xianniang too.
I actually think that it will end up being a pretty popular ship and many viewers will walk out of the movie being multishippers.

@adversitybloomed from X
Xiu trembled as she made her first confessions to her sister, noting the heartache that flashed across the elder Hua daughter’s eyes as she nodded in confirmation to being with child.
She fought back tears at Mulan’s eventual assurances and gentle kiss to her forehead, wishing desperately to play along and drop the matter, to pretend there were no more truths to tell about the baby. And yet, the warrior’s oath they both knew well drummed through her mind.
Loyal. Brave, True.
“It’s not Honghui’s,”
Xiu admitted softly, shaking as she stepped out of the comfort of her sister’s touch and sitting on a nearby stone bench, her head dropping to her hands for a moment, thinking of what she had to tell, before lifting a tearstained gaze back to Mulan and wrapping her arms around herself..

“i was attacked.”
With that, she told her sister everything. The day she was in the market alone when she had been grabbed and forced into an alley, how it had been late when she finally made it home to her worried parents, hurting in both mind and body. Their shock, the tea her mother made with special herbs that just made her sick. The day she learned it hadn’t worked, that she was pregnant with her attacker’s child. How Baba had held her as she cried.
How they sat beside her as she told Honghui, her betrothed, the hole tale and waited in ashamed silence for what felt like an eternity for his response.
How he insisted he still wished to marry her, that he was willing to raise the child as his own with her as his wife.

We still barely know anything about the chen honghui character (besides turning him into a nice guy) and I’d rather not jump to conclusions before the actual movie is out. Shan yu isn’t in the scene either because the antagonist will be replaced by a turkic khan as stated in the casting call. the witch is probably more of an advisor or right ✋ woman to this more historically accurate villain.
x
I don’t have any opinions on Chen Honghui or the actor. The latter I’ve never even heard of until today.
It’s true everything is conjecture at this point. But almost everything we’ve been told about this movie has only served to rub fans the wrong way. From “girly martial arts extravaganza” to “idk if there will be songs” to new characters/new names for characters to the very slim chance there will be some semblance of Mushu.
The reason every new thing that comes out about this movie has been met with controversy and overspeculation, where people rally their pitchforks and torches to kill the beast before it comes around, is because the picture of Mulan being painted right now just doesn’t look promising. There are so many changes going on, for this one movie, it makes you question “what’s wrong with just keeping it as is?” and that’s when people get mad and start throwing things because the nostalgia goggles take over.
There is a lot riding on this movie, and it makes me very nervous to say the least.
