★ Multiple editions, or just one? Happy Book Birthday to @jennifer_l_armentrout and A Light in the Flame! Daddy Nyktos is back! 🙌🏼 I’m thrilled to see this book out in the world, and as you can see, these series are two of my favorites—I need all of the editions. 🤣 Have you read either of these series yet? Description: (beware of spoilers!) The only one who can save Sera now is the one she spent her life planning to kill. The truth about Sera’s plan is out, shattering the fragile trust forged between her and Nyktos. Surrounded by those distrustful of her, all Sera has is her duty. She will do anything to end Kolis, the false King of Gods, and his tyrannical rule of Iliseeum, thus stopping the threat he poses to the mortal realm. Nyktos has a plan, though, and as they work together, the last thing they need is the undeniable, scorching passion that continues to ignite between them. Sera cannot afford to fall for the tortured Primal, not when a life no longer bound to a destiny she never wanted is more attainable than ever. But memories of their shared pleasure and unrivaled desire are a siren’s call impossible to resist. And as Sera begins to realize that she wants to be more than a Consort in name only, the danger surrounding them intensifies. The attacks on the Shadowlands are increasing, and when Kolis summons them to Court, a whole new risk becomes apparent. The Primal power of Life is growing inside her, pushing her closer to the end of her Culling. And without Nyktos’s love—an emotion he’s incapable of feeling—she won’t survive her Ascension. That is if she even makes it to her Ascension and Kolis doesn’t get to her first. Because time is running out. For both her and the realms. Thank you so much to @1001darknights_blueboxpress for sending me a copy of A Light in the Flame so I could share it with you all! ★ HASHTAGS // #alightintheflame #jenniferlarmentrout #frombloodandash #fbaa #casteeldaneer #socialbutterflypr #blueboxpress #poppybalfour #ashadowintheember #kierancontou #daddynyktos #bookstagram #fantasybooks https://www.instagram.com/p/ClAi6oJrZEF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I wish I loved From Blood and Ash by JLA, but it doesn’t hit for me.
They marketed the book as a “fantasy bodyguard romance, forbidden love” etc. And I was sold! So I picked up fbaa and was thoroughly heartbroken the longer I read it. All the inconsistencies, goofy banter, filler (it needed a ton of editing, sorry), on top of the excessive info-dumping for the world building, AND I could NOT get behind the cringe MMC/LI, which made this book a 2/5 stars for me. And I felt that was a generous rating but then someone roasted me on goodreads for posting my review.
Recently, I started the 2nd book because my friend said it gets better but I stopped. Maybe this series just really isn’t my thing.
Sigh.

Have you ever said why you don't like From Blood and Ash? I thought most people liked that book. Was it just the newest book that put you off them?
I don't think I ever have, actually. Maybe once, when I answered a "fandom calm down" thing, but not like, my personal problems with it. I have the first three books but I quit after book two. This was right when I was getting back into reading for fun and not academia. My friend who suggested ACOTAR was like, if you liked those books, try FBAA. I trusted her and bought the first three so I didn't have to wait on them like I did for ACOSF.
The first book is...okay. It's interesting enough but the premise of very sheltered teenager who is a badass assassin is always annoying to me, it's why I think TOG also was hard for me. The problem is that the authors tell you "she is the best" and then when they show you, she's actually REALLY bad. Poppy wasn't AWFUL but her experience makes no sense considering she never had any practice until the book starts, and theoretical killing and real life killing are different? Also if Hawke kept catching her, you're telling me no one else did?
To be very honest, I was willing to overlook some of my main criticisms of the book (the cringy dialogue, repetition, and bad editing) because the story IS interesting. It moves, for the most part. Only a few middle places were really stagnant and I chalked that up to first book world-building syndrome.
But BOOK TWO was a SLOG it was so awful. The world building was out of control at that point, the constant "Why?" "Poppy with a question" jokes got old like, the third time it happened. There is just NOTHING happening for like, 300-400 pages that at some parts I was just skimming to get through it. Everything interesting happens in the last 50 pages and the build up is wonky or non-existent. JLA isn't interested in creating ACTUAL tension so she resolves it with a snap of her fingers and then creates more instead of teasing out her more interesting plot narratives. The pretend "will they/wont they" with Casteel and Poppy was the worst, though. I hated that so much. It made no sense and wasn't believable and instead of them working on their relationship its just snap "we're together now after I said we wouldn't be".
And all the old problems, of course (bad editing, cringy dialogue, repetition). I'm a big believer that reading should be fun and if books are boring/bad, stop reading them. You'll never catch me doing a hate read. I have the third book on my shelf but I've never read it and I never will. And seeing the blow up on book 4 was kind of validating because FINALLY people were admitting that these books are way overhyped for what they are, they're badly written, the world building is so big and complex the author cannot keep track of it and instead of fleshing any of it out she just adds more and more as it suits her. I don't think they ever should have been more than three books. Whatever is happening now could probably all exist in three tightly written books.
And obviously if you like them, you're allowed to. I'm not saying anything about the people reading them. I like plenty of trash nonsense (ask me about the reverse harem monster books I can't put down, like I am no stranger to badly written smut books). I think my issue is that they get treated as if they ARE really well done and the people who don't like them are just haters of popular fiction.

Your fbaa/ffaf series edits are so good! It's so good to see someone still making edits of the amazing series 😭🙏💕
omg thank you so much! That's so sweet
When I first read it I noticed that there wasn't much edits related to this series, specially to the faf spin off, and I was (still am) completely obsessed with it, so I decided edit for myself even not knowing how to do it hahah
See that you think they're good warms my heart, thank you for letting me know 🥺🥺🥺

Have you read From blood & ash. It's a great series I'd love to see your edit for it!
hi anon !! you might not like my answer lol i’m sorry in advance
i have read from blood and ash! it’s not my favorite. the second book was better than the first in my opinion, but i felt like the on-page abuse was gratuitous, and the lack of characters of color was embarrassing. i get that the cast grows more diverse as the series goes on, but for 90% of the first book, there are only two notable women of color, and both fall into old, very negative tropes (“ex*tic” mystic, and literal servant). plus, having your main woman of color described as ambiguously light brown-skinned and then name her TAWNY which literally means … light brown …. the clownery. i know this series is huge on ig and booktok, but i just don’t feel comfortable contributing to the hype :/

“No.” I took a step back, his features blurring. “You don’t understand. I can’t celebrate my birthdays because that’s ungodly. I’m not allowed to go to picnics at the Grove or to supper with others because I’m the Maiden. I’m not allowed to defend myself because that would be unseemly. I don’t even know how to ride a horse. Nearly every book is forbidden to me. I can’t socialize or make friends because my sole purpose is to serve the kingdom by going to the gods—something no one will even explain. What does that actually mean?” (…) “I don’t even know if I’ll have a future beyond my Ascension. In less than a year or even sooner, I may lose every chance I have to do everything everyone else takes for granted. I have no life, Vikter. Nothing.” (…) “Everything has been taken from me—my free will, my choice, my future—and I still have to suffer through the Duke’s lessons,” I spat out, shuddering. “I still have to stand there and let him hit me. Let him look at me and touch me! Do whatever he or the Lord wants—” Sucking in a fiery, painful breath, I lifted my hands, grabbing fistfuls of my hair, pulling them back as Vikter closed his eyes. “I have to stand there and take it. I can’t even scream or cry. I can do nothing. So I’m sorry that choosing something that I want for myself is such a disappointment to you, the kingdom, everyone else, and the gods. Where is the honor in being the Maiden? What exactly should I be proud of? Who would want this? Point me in their direction, and I’ll gladly switch places with them. It should be no shock that I want to be found unworthy.”

★ How much romance do you like in your books? I’ve mentioned this in the past—but I almost always need to have romance in a book to feel really engaged with the story. There’s a few books I love that have little or no romance, but for the most part I am always looking for a romance to root for. I can’t explain it! 🤷🏻‍♀️ One of my favorite romances is in @jennifer_l_armentrout’s Blood and Ash series. I love this world, and these @illumicrate editions are some of my most beloved books—@merwild’s art on the covers is incredible. Excited to see what Jennifer and @1001darknights_blueboxpress have in store for us with the next Flesh and Fire book, A Light in the Flame! Just a few more weeks. 😍🥰 ★ HASHTAGS // #jenniferlarmentrout #frombloodandash #fbaa #casteeldaneer #poppybalfour #kierancontou #illumicrate #bookstagram #bookaesthetic #fivestarreads #favoritebooks #romantasy #fantasybooks #bookcart #bookstack https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj1Ea4KyT1p/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Now that we’re well past it, one of the things I struggled with about The Crown of Gilded Bones and The War of Two Queen was that it felt like there was a lack of subplots (and the overarching plot felt like it needed to be edited down), and the subplots we did have were rushed and not really fleshed out. In the first two books we had multiple plots and objectives that came together into one larger structure. The pacing was still off at times, but it worked better.
Poppy and Hawke’s relationship from the Red Pearl to New Haven. It has growth, and you can see them as two people falling in love despite their circumstances.
The increasing number of cursed/the fear of them creating the rise combined with the strain of more decenters (Agnes, the Tulis family, and the Descenter who threw the hand).
Poppy finding Malessa’s killer (I loved detective Poppy) which pairs with Poppy finding out the truth of the Ascended/Hawke.
Poppy’s desire to live—something that Hawke interacts with but is in no way responsible for. It pairs with her fear of Ascencion and decision to leave The Maiden behind.
Jericho as the secondary antagonist and the first one we experience as such (since the Dark One is anonymous).
Poppy’s relationship with death, first articulated by Hawke, then experienced through Rylan, then Vikter, and then the Tulis family.
Hawke’s antagonistic desire to free Malik, and destroy the Ascended.
Hawke’s desire to keep Poppy alive, even though everyone he cares for (other than Kieran and our precious Delano) kinda wants her dead and in pieces. This desire starts before he’s ever met her and develops once they know each other.
Poppy starts in a passive/defensive role. Things happen to her and she reacts, and while she trains in combat, the goal is defensive. Her actions and desires do not drive the story for the first 60% of FBAA. She transitions into an active role through the story, and she ends trying to choose things for herself (even though it ends semi-badly in the first book).
Cas is learning to trust Poppy and believe himself worthy of a loving relationship.
Kieran and Poppy coming to a common ground of mutual love for Cas and respect for each other
Even though I had issues with ASITE I liked it because it felt more like multiple threads winding together and the characters grew. In TWTQ, the only character who significantly grew was Malik (and Valyn a bit between the two books to now be the “you’re my daughter in law and I will do anything for my family” guy), and it was more that we learned about him rather than he changed.
I really wanted to like the two later fbaa books but I think they were just a little… underdeveloped. The makings of good books were there. Overall I still enjoyed them. I’m just rereading the first book for fanfic references, and I couldn’t help but mull it over. I would have been more than okay with slower lead times between books if it allowed for more polished products—and I think this is compounded since most of us don’t read a ton of indie books where this can be more prevalent.

21 & 37 for the meme for fic writers <3
21. How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?
This is a bit of a tough question. As a whole, once I've written a chapter I don't change a lot. I'll read through and edit, change some words. For some of my Gwynriel fics I have to make sure I include Az's shadows. From a planning perspective, though, I've had to re-outline my long fic a couple times to adjust for things I missed or didn't get right. But generally I don't revise a lot. I should probably do it more.
37. Talk about your current wips
Hoooo boy. Okay. So legitimate WIP, with words to paper, I only have The Raven and the Songbird (Gwynriel) and Revelations (FBAA). The things I have that I am hoping to write (with an actual plot/idea in mind) include:
T-Swift Gwynriel: Love Story, No Body No Crime, Fearless
Leathers (Gwynriel): Part 2 for Kinktober
Elorcan Hurt/Comfort
I also plan on working Sartaq POVs from Tower of Dawn, an emotional scene for Savage Lands, and addressing that EGREGIOUS Elorcan fade to black
Thanks for the ask!!!

Hi friends, in an attempt to procrastinate my grad school midterms I made a fan edit for the FBAA / ASITE series. They're not my dream cast, they're simply A cast that was available so please don't spam my video with discourse on casting concerns. Also sorry for the inconsisten clip quality. Regardless, I hope you like it! I wanted to get others as pumped for the release as I am
