rules: give us the links to your fic with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the least words.
most hits: The Earth Still Burns Cloud Strife/Sephiroth - FF7 Remake
I feel you on the pain of wips godot 😭 I've already got the next three chapters written for this one, but I kinda wanna write at least two more as a buffer before I update this fic again. I really miss this crazy humorous wild rollercoaster of a story so much, and wish I could write like that again.
second most kudos: for me it's also refer above
third most comments: Half of Your Fate eventual (not happy nor necessarily consensual) Nam Seon-ho/Seo Hwi/Yi Bang-won OT3, among various other Seon-ho pairings - My Country: The New Age
My self-indulgent, on-going idfic and baby right now. When will my muse return so I can continue to lewd Seon-ho while putting him through unimaginable pain and mental anguish??? *cries*
fourth most bookmarked: Peony Lantern - Uchiha Sasuke/Uchiha Shisui - Naruto
One of my rare genfics (even if there's some small implied cousincest). I just love ghost stuff and the Uchihas so much.
fifth most words: Colors of Absence - Nam Seon-ho/Yi Bang-won & Nam Seon-ho/Seo Hwi - My Country: The New Age (9,510 words)
My 'serious' wip with slow burn Bangseon that I haven't touched in so long since the prospect of rewriting it for the umpteenth time is extremely daunting to me.
least words: counting bodies like sheep - Nam Seon-ho/Seo Hwi - My Country: The New Age (1,376 words)
A short introspective piece on Hwi's angsty, obsessive thoughts about Seon-ho while in Liaodong.
Gotta say I tend to hang out in small fandoms and write for niche pairings and dynamics pretty often. I'll never be one of the popular authors out there, and that's okay.

Lee Chang Jin proves to be more ruthless and cunning, Yoo Jae Yi more quick and clever. Kwon Hyuk and Do Hae Won barely get away with their lives. Im Seon Nyeo quits unexpectedly almost immediately after the start. She could be heard saying "Nope. Not this guy." Lee Dong Sik is confused but glad he doesn't have to fight her. She seems nice. Oh Ji Hwa's fight is also over almost as soon as it begins. She easily outsmarts her partner Kang Do Soo, avenging brother in the process. Park Jeong Je simply gives up half way through. Even Chief Jung feels a little bad for him. Hang in there, buddy! Meanwhile Hair Salon Ladies manage to overwhelm Kang Jin Mook with numbers and against all odds the serial killer goes down buried under a pile of angry middle aged women. Nam Sang Bae takes out Jo Gil Goo who's shaking in fear like a wet chihuahua with a look of senior disapproval. Impressive. The guy never stood a chance. Han Ju Won underestimates the opponent who quickly spots his 'germaphobia', pretends to be hungover and pukes on his shoes. When Han Ju Won bends down to clean them, Kang Min Jeong knocks him out. Devious. ROUND TWO is over. ROUND THREE begins.
ROUND THREE will test participants strength and skill. This time they are armed with one object or weapon of choice and given no time to prepare. What they choose and how they use it is completely up to them. Knife? Gun? Cane? Own shoe? Carton of eggs? Anything's allowed. add what you think they'd use in the tags (if you want to)
ROUND THREE MATCH-UPS:
LEE CHANG JIN VS YOO JAE YI
LEE DONG SIK VS HAIR SALON LADIES

Her Private Life (2019)
Tumblr media
This show was the caramel latte of rom-coms. Warm, safe, and sweet enough to rot your teeth if you take in too much. This wasn't quite a new favorite, but I still enjoyed it, and will probably watch the show again at some point.
What Worked
This show was carried by the cute factor of the OTP. It was mostly kind to the side characters, but didn't really give them nearly as much attention. Overall, the chemistry of the two leads, and the premise of the show was so good that you kind of didn't care when everyone else disappeared.
That being said, the show did a lot of smart, subtle things in the writing. It played it straight with a lot of common tropes, so when the show had the ML (**Spoilers**) actually figure out Seon-joo was a secret fan-girl in episode five (**End Spoilers**), it surprised me, and I was hooked from there. The entire dynamic in that arc, with the ML being teasing in one scene, and then secretly supportive in the next, was so good. The other relationship stuff they did was also excellent, but this was what made the show interesting and unique.
What Didn't Worked
The show was very strong overall, so there weren't a lot of missteps, but it did have a few weaknesses. The way it was filmed at the start, with moments where it almost leaned into anime, really showed the web novel origins of the show, and was very different from typical dramas. I liked this lens, but not everyone will.
Also, the amount of cute relationship stuff from the OTP could quickly turn a little too sweet. It wasn't not really a problem, just something to be aware of. There were times when I started rolling my eyes at the level of cute, and that's when I knew I should probably stop watching for awhile and pick the show up the next day.
(**Spoilers**) The childhood connection thing they did in the final arc of the episode bothered me a little. I understand why they did it, but it still felt a little lazy. I liked the way the arc (which had Young-sook be the one that dropped Ryan Gold off, and talked about a young child that died in a car accident) recontextualized the beginning of the show. The arc really did make me rethink Deok-mi's parents and their relationship. I just wish they had started laying the groundwork for that earlier. It felt like something they introduced at the last minute, which kept it from having the weight it should have (**End Spoilers**).
The Performances
Park Min-young as "secret fangirl" Sung Deok-mi. I think this is my favorite show of hers since Healer. On the other hand, it's also the only show of hers I've completely finished since Healer. She was adorable, and pulled off the humor and the cute stuff pretty well. The writing gave her alot to work with, though the show rarely tried to challenge her (other than the huge endurance challenge of being in pretty much every scene).
Kim Jae-wook as "perfect boyfriend" Ryan Gold / Heo Yoon-je. Some people have complained about him being too withdrawn and even a little wooden in this, but I think he was just following the brief. When the show called for him to open up and be all emotional, he did great. When it called for him to be funny, or cute, he did good with that as well. A solid performance, overall.
Ahn Bo-hyun as "the real director" Nam Eun-gi. I hated the stupid love triangle thing the writers pulled with him, but when they turned the angst down and let the character just breathe and hang out with the other characters, the character was fun to watch. Which shows how good an actor Ahn Bo-hyun could be when they gave him the chance.
Park Jin-joo as "super BFF" Lee Seon-joo. The only other show I've seen her in was It's Okay to Not Be Okay where she was fun, but quirky as heck. She did a great job here, even with the stupid "joke" Lesbian relationship they did in the first few episodes. Just funny and interesting and it made me want to see what else the actor could do.
Im Ji-kyu as "worst Oppa" Kang Seung-min. Not really a standout character from a writing standpoint and the acting wasn't bad, but not really memorable either.
Kim Mi-kyung as "knitting Oma" Go Young-sook. Kim Mi-kyung is a legend for a reason. This is exactly her kind of role and she did a great job. She played a quirky character really well, and when the writers did the "big reveal" at the end, she did a good job with that as well.
Maeng Sang-hoon as "rock enthusiast Appa" Sung Geun-ho. He played kind of joke character through most of it, but it was a funny joke. He handled the dramatic final arc well enough, but it was easy for him to slip into the background compared to all the other actors on the screen.
Kim Bo-ra as "stalker fangirl" Sindy / Kim Hyo-jin. The writers gave her a pretty good arc, and she did a fine job with it. She was funny and annoying when they needed her to be at the start, but it was nice to see the (mostly believable) development throughout the series.
Kim Sun-young as "worst boss and worst Oma" Uhm So-hye. Every time the character walked into the scene, I had a moment of dread. And it was a relief when she left, which proved that Kim Sun-young did a good job with the role she was given, I guess.
Jung Jae-won as "the idol" Cha Shi-an / Sian. Jung Jae-won is a full time rapper & songwriter, so I think this was a case where they knew the limits of the actor and wrote the character to match. He looked and acted the part of an idol very well, but tended to fade in the background alot of the time. So a good job, but not a standout.
Lee Il-hwa as "Missing Oma" Gong Eun-young / Lee Sol. The actor did a good job with what she was given, but I wish the writers had given the character a little more depth. Still, that wasn't really the kind of show they were doing.
Hong Seo-young as "perennial third wheel" Choi Da-in. Again, the actor was mostly okay, but she was given a very thin character who was mostly there to stir up drama. Just like with Nam Eun-gi, when they gave her scenes where she was able to breathe and hang out with the other characters, it was fun to watch, but those scenes were few and far between.
The Kids. The young tyke who played Seon-joo and Seung-min's son, and did alot of judo was cute. The other scenes with children were mostly pleasant, though again the show liked to lean hard into the cute factor at times. Overall, they did good.
Everyone Else. The office people where there, and were mostly funny, but had very little development. The coffeeshop temp / future rock star guy had a few fun moments, but didn't really stand out. The guest stars (like the author guy, Eun-gi's mom, the fangirls, etc.) had mostly good performances, though the show kind of forgot about some of that by the end of it as it focused on the drama part of it over the romcom stuff.
TL; DR:
A fun, sweet show with enough angst and drama to keep it interesting. If you like Park Min-young and Kim Jae-wook (which I did), you'll enjoy the show. Otherwise, you'll probably stop watching pretty quickly.

*SPECIAL* Crash Course in Romance Episode 16 Review (Finale)
You and I, The Union of Two Universes
Scenes that I can particularly relate to:
1. Hae-e’s aspiration to go to Japan reminds me of myself. I haven’t been there yet, by the way.
2. Su-a’s mother went grocery shopping, and I love grocery shopping, not just for groceries but for general shopping too. I am an impulsive buyer. Hay. But the people talking behind her back about her affair video seem so bad. I don’t want to experience that in the future. Well, I guess everyone has the possibility of being tempted to opt for a third party, right? Just like her husband so brazen. I remember being paranoid before, back in 2020, when I had my first boyfriend, who’s so yucky whenever the memories flash back to me. A week after our breakup, he already found a new girl, who is his colleague. Yuck. What a shame The date when we broke up was May 7, 2020. I remember all of it because what he did is so wrong. I even attempted suicide, but luckily I did not. I can finally breathe properly after writing this stuff.
3. The reason I am suicidal is that I have major depression and also bipolar disorder. I tend to remember all the struggles ever since I was born.
4. I feel like I also have ADHD, but this might not be true since this is undiagnosed.
5. I used to drink highly caffeinated energy drinks and take slimming pills because I felt like whenever I diet, it had no effect. Or just a yo-yo effect.
6. Also, I already forgave my mom, who abandoned me since I was two years old.
7. Even someone who has a psychosocial disability can truly love and be loved as long as the feelings are genuine.
8. Idk, it’s weird, but Choi Chi-yeol reminds me of someone from 2018. When I was reviewing for CPALE. 😭😂His love for Hang-seon is undoubtedly sweet and cute. He even bought an expensive gold ring with a diamond on it in advance! But Hang-seon bought an 18K gold ring, too! (They planned to get married after Hang-seon completed his sports instructor certification.) So kawaii/cute! 😭💗
9. Two years later, Chi-yeol has been passionately teaching at his respective academy. I adore him. All in all, the series is a heartwarming and relatable portrayal of the struggles and joys of modern-day relationships. The characters are complex and realistic, and the storylines explore a wide range of emotions and trauma.
10. One of the best things about the show is how it shows family relationships, especially the one between Nam and her brother.Their bond is both heartwarming and complicated, with moments of humor and emotions that add depth to their characters.
11. The romantic storyline between Nam and Choi is also a highlight of the series. Their relationship is built on a strong foundation of friendship and mutual respect, and their journey towards finally confessing their feelings to each other is both sweet and satisfying.
12. The show also explores the idea of finding out who you are and who you want to be, especially through the character of Hae-e.Her decision to leave for Japan and live with her real mother is a poignant reminder of the challenges of growing up and finding one’s place in the world.
13. Also, the show shows how important communication is in all kinds of relationships, whether between siblings, friends, or lovers.
14. The characters learn to open up to each other, express their emotions, and work through their conflicts, leading to more meaningful connections with each other.
15. Those are my thoughts/review. I hope you like ‘em!

I Rate Kdramas I've Watched Based On How Much They Would Be Improved By the Addition of a Cat
only including kdramas I've finished, and remember well enough to judge.
If I'm forgetting existing cats, that's on me, but have you considered we could add more cats anyway? just a thought.
Beyond Evil--If Dong-sik owned a cat he could pet it whenever he was feeling angsty. If Ju-won owned a cat he would have cat fur on his clothes all the time and everyone would be like "perfectionist germophobe how??" Also, imagine the power struggle when it turns out that Dong-sik's cat actually Really Likes Ju-won, or vice versa. The chaos. The trauma. The UST. Idek if it's better to give just one a cat or both. Anyway, 10/10.
Circle: Two Worlds Connected--Rare show that would be made worse by a cat because it would probably die during the time skip, emotionally destroying me forever. It would be comforting to Kim Woo-jin in part one but ultimately not worth it. 0/10.
The Devil Judge--Already has a cat so this is irrelevant. I feel the cat could have been made more of but it is there and this is a good thing.
Extraordinary You--I like the concept of a cat slinking around in the background, and no one can tell if it is or is not affected by the author's intentions. But it's not especially needed. 2/10.
It's Okay to Not Be Okay--Ko Moon-young already has a whole character-softening arc going on. Adding a cat to it would be fun but it's not really necessary. On the other hand, imagine if she had a cat from the beginning that she fiercely loves, and it's just as temperamental as her, scrawny and black and full of scratches. Also it probably cameos in some of her picture books. I would Like To See It. 5/10.
The King: Eternal Monarch--I specifically want Jo Eun-sup to have a cat that really likes Jo Yeong. And Yeong to be shameless in liking it back. Like, does he say anything about it, no, but does he restrain himself from picking it up and petting it during a serious conversation, also no. Lee Gon thinks this is adorable but already knows Yeong likes cats so it's no surprise to him. Kang Sin-jae also thinks this is adorable and Hilarious and flirts with him about it. 10/10.
Mine--Any cat in Mine would probably be extremely spoiled and subject to a custody battle at some point, aka either a peacock fate or another point of contention between Hi-soo and Ji-yong. I think the latter would be more interesting than the former but imagine just a big fat cat lolling around in the background and everyone grumpily giving it scratches in the aftermath of yet another family argument. Actually I think the family of Seo-hyun and Jin-ho should own it, bc they both are lonely ppl and would appreciate a cat, and Soo-hyuk would get to hang out with it too. 7/10.
Mr. Sunshine--I feel the cat in this drama should be some sort of communal cat. Maybe the American Embassy has a cat, or maybe Kudo Hina's hotel does. Either way, Mr. Sunshine is so much about finding connections with strangers and building community and finding one's place, and a cat would not go amiss. It would help to build common ground between ppl, temporary truces (you can't tell me Dong-mae would kill Eugene or Hui-seong in front of the hotel cat! It wouldn't be Right!) and so on. Anyway I just want to see any of the leads with a cat in their lap. I say any but I mean Eugene. 10/10.
My Country the New Age--Seon-ho needs more connection and warmth in his life but I feel he can't really be trusted with a pet, and also this is the kind of show where if he happens to feed a stray now and again, eventually Nam Jeon's going to kill the stray just so Seon-ho will be more traumatized. Hwi could take care of a cat, but he doesn't really seem like a cat person to me; maybe Bang-won could have one? Bang-won, fan up, cat in lap, staring at someone imperiously. Not a bad image. 3/10 don't give it to Seon-ho, I'm sorry dude.
Psychopath Diary--Is there a cat in this show that Dong-sik and/or In-woo respects for being a predator?? I feel like there might be. If not, there should be. 8/10, it's only logical.
Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung--If Yi Rim had a cat, it could sit on top of him while he slept and ward off nightmares. But eh, I don't get the sense he's really a cat person, or Hae-ryung either. (Don't ask me how my catdar works, it's a tenuous art. I could be convinced.) 2/10.
Save Me--Guseonwon having a communal cat would feel very natural to me. Maybe the Holy Father or Apostle Jo would be stroking it all the time so it would seem like an evil accessory. But it would actually be a very good cat. I think it would kind of spook Sang-mi due to her associating it with the villains, but when Dong-chul infiltrates Guseonwon he really gets along with it, which is taken as another sign that he's got great disciple potential. 10/10.
White Christmas--It makes no sense for the school to have a cat bc Susin must be much too strict. However, if Kang Mi-reu or Yoon Su had been secretly hiding a cat in the dorms all along, it would be completely hilarious. Out of place in the serious scenes (which is most of them!) but hilarious. 6/10.
That's it, that's all my cat thoughts, good night.

I watched the last two episodes of All of Us Are Dead this morning. I got up at 3 am to finish it so my 6 yr old didn't accidentally see any scenes.
Long post with mild spoilers.
Happiness (2021) gave me happiness and All of Us Are Dead (2022) should be renamed All Your Faves Are Dead.
I'm disappointed with the writing for the girls and women. There were a lot of female characters in this, but the male side characters received more depth. I checked, and yes, the screenwriter and director are both men. I understand this is based on a webtoon, but I haven't read it, so I don't know how the characters were treated in the original material.
There were some characters we spent time with that didn't receive any resolution to their arcs. Why did we spend time on them? I understand focusing on the side characters of the main scooby gang. But we spent time on characters that were probably 17 blocks away and didn't impact the story at all. Pointless. I want that screentime back for my stupid kids at the school.
Park Solomon as Su Hyeok reminded me so much (appearance and character-wise) of Joss Wayar as Neo from 3 Will Be Free that it was distracting. Other than being a himbo, his character fell flat for me. I would have preferred it if we got to see his transition from bully to reformed hero instead of it happening before the drama started.
Yoon Chan Young as Lee Cheong San was amazing and I hope he gets any role he wants in the future. I'm going to watch his back catalog of dramas so I can watch how his acting grew. You can always tell which actors got started as child actors. It's hard for others to match them well on screen.
Yoo In Soo as Yoon Gwi Nam just was great as the antagonist-he really ate it up. It's rare that I like watching a petty asshole spiral into a captivating villainous archenemy. This kid got a lot of screentime alone or just with extras. That must've been exhausting to try to carry scenes alone. I hope he got to hang out with the other young actors and laugh between scenes and after cuts.
The student I wanted to see more of was Bae Eun Ji played by Oh Hye Soo. I hope she gets to live on and kill more disappointing men. Frankly, she should have been the one to take out Gwi Nam. And the fact that the writers gave that arc to Cheong San instead of her will disappoint me forever.
Gyung Su was my favorite character. 😭😭😭
Dae Su was right - they should have used the window as a toilet.
Anyway. I'm old and I love love love spotting good young actors. I've been feeding off dramas from the cast of Queen Seon Deok since 2009. Now I can watch the careers of these kids for the next 10-15 years.

ooh! 17 and 18?
thank you so much for sending me this, laire 💙
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
i fear it's still nam seon-ho for me fdjkjk. even after two years and many other shows and fandoms later, the brainrot is still going strong.
18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?
gotta say it wasn't so much a character as a new fandom that gave me trouble writing, namely bloodhounds. but new fandoms are always a bit intimidating and i think i'm starting to get the hang of it now after some struggle and strife.

Woo Do Hwan: Interview with Kankoku TV Drama vol. 97 (Aug 2020)
Tumblr media
Once again, much thanks to @staidwaters for graciously reviewing and correcting!!! This was a really hefty interview, hope you enjoy~
-------------
Woo Do Hwan
Sword, bow, and horseback riding for the first time
A “Monstrous Newcomer” in a career-making, historical drama debut
In 2016, in the movie “Master”, Woo Do Hwan played the role of Lee Byung Hyun’s subordinate. Even though he appeared onscreen for just three minutes, he left a strong impression, attracting attention. Since then, he starred in “Save Me” (2017 OCN), taking on the nickname of “Monstrous Newcomer” and setting out on a brilliant career path. The next step he takes will be his first historical drama “My Country” (2019 JTBC).
Tackling a historical drama is an ideal chance for young and promising actors to grow; they have a rare chance to study in depth with multiple superb veteran actors over the long filming period. Woo Do Hwan did not miss this opportunity. His new work “The King: Eternal Monarch” (2020 SBS) leverages 120% of what he learned from “My Country”, and his popularity is surging.
Struck by a midwinter waterfall, the most dreadful and frigid opportunity to showcase yourself
--What kind of work is ”My Country”?
WDH: Each of the characters clash with the others for the sake of their personal convictions. This drama depicts their love and friendships. The country they are each reaching for … in a way, you could say they seek the same goal. Everyone wants a country in which they can live happily, but each person has a different path to that goal. This work skillfully depicts the conflicts that arise in the midst of this.
--Please introduce the role that you play.
WDH: Nam Seon-ho is an illegitimate child born to a family of nobles (yanban), and he has suffered greatly because of his birth. The poor guy is only able to relax his guard and laugh when he is with Seo Hwi (played by Yang Se Jong) and his younger sister Yeon (played by Jo Yi Hyun). However, even under such circumstances, he holds onto his ambitions. He doesn’t want other people to experience the same kind of pain that he has endured, so he strives to become the right-hand man of Yi Seong-gye (played by Kim Young-cheol), the future founder and king of the Joseon Dynasty. However, it doesn’t go as expected and I end up in opposition to Hwi, my dearest friend.
--What things did you pay attention to when creating the role?
WDH: Since it’s a period drama, it was difficult to get used to the way of speaking and tone of voice. It took me a while to get the hang of it. Now  I have the opposite problem, I’m doing my best to shake off the historical tone (laughs).
--The gorgeous hairstyles and clothing were a sight to behold.
WDH: Honestly, at first I thought “Long hair probably won’t suit me…” (laugh). So early on, I participated in many concept meetings and tried out different hairstyles. Even with long hair, there are many different hairstyles that can be made, such as wearing with armor or tying it up. I collaborated with the director to choose the most suitable style according to the situation in the drama. I was able to try on as many outfits as hairstyles, but I really enjoyed being  able to wear the special costumes such as the armor and the inspector’s garments; things we normally don’t get the chance to wear.
--How did you practice horseback riding, swordsmanship, and archery?
WDH: Before filming started, I studied martial arts for about two months. Filming lasted nine months, so in total I was focused on this work for a whole year. While filming action, it’s important to skillfully capture the scene, but the most essential thing is to not to get hurt. For that reason, the cinematographer, my co-stars, and I always had to be in perfect sync. It took time to match movements for the sword fights.
--You became the topic of much discussion when you revealed your magnificent physique in a waterfall during the opening of the drama. What are your secrets for managing your fitness?
WDH: I train on a regular basis. If I only started working out when I knew there were going to be scenes with skin showing, it’d be stressful trying to build up my body in a short period of time for shooting. After all, I don’t know when or where I will have to strip down for a scene! (laugh) Usually I play a lot of soccer, and I’ll go to the gym to train if I have time. If I take care of myself properly as a habit, then I don’t need to worry if my body looks good or if I should put in more effort during acting; I can just concentrate on my performance.
--Was the director’s reaction a good one?
WDH: He was extremely happy, hahaha. They keep trying to make me take my clothes off, so I was like, “Come on, give me a break!” The road to the filming location for the waterfall scene was rugged and steep and it was incredibly cold; it was the most difficult scene. Se-jong even said “I never want to go into water that cold again”.
--A lot of viewers said that “Nam Seon-ho is the most pitiful man in the world.” How do you personally feel?
WDH: I wanted to present Seon-ho as a tragic figure, so I was glad that the audience saw him the same way; it encouraged me to put in even more effort and I worked hard to build up his character. Seon-ho constantly stands on the boundary between life and death, living a life where he might die at any moment. He never manages to accomplish any of his dreams, and it is only at the very end that he realizes what is most precious to him. However, even though Seon-ho is a tragic character, if we just focused on the sadness the drama would be hard to watch and it wouldn’t be interesting at all. Therefore I wanted to show many things with him, such as him being a powerful figure, and the loneliness his power hides.
He was able to finish the drama because he was with Se-jong, his co-star of the same age.
Tumblr media
--At what points did you sympathize with Seon-ho?
WDH: There is always a conflict in Seon-ho’s life in that he always has to sacrifice something in order to get something he wants. Seon-ho’s situation is an extreme case, of course, but I think that in our lives there are many moments like his, even if they are small and trivial. Moments when we desire what we can’t have, or throw away things we shouldn’t throw away. There are also moments when we all have to give something up for the sake of a goal that we are reaching for.  In the midst of that, I worried about the things that I should protect, so I deeply sympathized with Seon-ho, whose ideals and emotions were in conflict with each other.
--Your portrayal of the character’s emotions was well-received. When was Seon-ho the most emotional?
WDH: It would be when he heard that Seo Hwi was alive. I had a deep rapport with Se-jong in all my scenes with him. From a certain point onwards, the events in the drama truly felt real, and I fell more and more in love with Se-jong (laugh). I deeply empathized with Seon-ho’s emotions, which made me want to perform even more intensely in this work.
--Concerning expressing emotions, are you the type to do a lot of preparation beforehand? Or are you the type to perform what you feel on the spot?
WDH: I think I am half-and-half. Beforehand, I’ll think, “So we’re filming this kind of scene today”,  why is this happening, and what was the situation before this scene? However, it’s difficult to continuously hold onto emotions because there are rehearsals and blocking out our positions with the director. So I will concentrate on creating the emotion in the moment when acting.
--And what about your mutually dependent relationship with Yang Se-jong, who played the role of Seo Hwi?
WDH: I believe it would have been very difficult if Se-jong hadn’t been there. I relied on him a lot. The make-up room was set up in a large van onsite, and while our hair was being done, we would go over our lines. If one person said their lines, then the other person would just naturally respond with their own lines. We are the same age, not just in the drama but also in real life, so in both the Goryeo and modern eras, we were always communicating well, back and forth.
Se-jong always helped me, and even though we were together on location for very long periods of time, not once did we fight or have a conflict of opinion. We spent our time together as good friends, always being considerate of each other.
--There were many scenes of Seon-ho and Hwi’s friendship that brought out tears, but was there a particular scene where you especially felt the friendship between the two?
WDH: All those scenes where we rescued each other. Especially that scene in the latter half, where Hwi took Seon-ho out of Yi Bang-won’s (played by Jang Hyuk) house; that was memorable. Then in the first half, during the massacre of the Liaodong Punitive Expedition advance party, there’s a scene where we cross swords in the midst of combat and I recognize my dear friend Hwi. That scene was very good and had a big impact.
--What is your impression of Seolhyun (AOA) as Han Hee-jae?
WDH: Seolhyun was truly a “celebrity” to me (laugh). She is one of Korea’s top idols; I’ve seen her movies. When I heard that she would be co-starring with me, I was very much looking forward to it. Once we were actually performing together, I was amazed that her acting was even better than I expected. Seolhyun was the youngest on location, but she had a very mature attitude during filming. In front of a large crowd of her seniors, she played a bold and strong woman. I was impressed.
--The antagonism between Seon-ho and his father was one of the highlights of the drama. How was it like to co-star with Ahn Nae-sang, who played the role of your father?
WDH: Ahn Nae-sang sunbae was like a real father, a very interesting person. Although he’d say “Seon-ho is an impertinent son” (laugh), he worked well with me, and did a lot for me. During breaks, he tells jokes and lightens the atmosphere on set, but once filming starts, his gaze radically changes and he becomes a terrifying father. He’s not someone who hands out advice left and right to juniors, rather, he is a person who reacts kindly and looks after us.
Extremely jealous of Se-jong’s Japanese fanmeet
Tumblr media
--What are your thoughts on successfully wrapping up your first historical drama?
WDH: I wore hanbok, long wigs, and armor--I got to experience all of these things for the first time. I’ve also never done things like swordsmanship, archery, or horseback riding, so each one of those was a new challenge. Because I have never lived in that time period, I worried about how I should portray it. Despite that, I enjoyed everything. The remote locations that I visited were very beautiful, and during breaks it was a wonderful experience to enjoy the scenery and watch the seasons change instead of sitting in the dressing room. I’ve heard from my seniors that once you’ve done one historical drama, you’ll want to do another, and now I know what that feeling is like for myself.
--What was the most memorable location?
WDH: In the opening scenes, I often went to the countryside, but first I filmed the waterfall scene and the cliff scene. That cliff scene was absolutely terrifying. I scaled the cliff and did the action scene, but I thought...I might actually die if I fall (strained laugh).
--Watching the behind-the-scenes footage, you seem the quiet type but at the Japanese fanmeeting, I feel that you were skilled at speaking onstage. What is your actual personality?
WDH: Do I look like someone who doesn’t say much? I’m definitely not the talkative type, though. Hahaha. I talk a lot when I’m with Se-jong, but the interesting thing is, how much Se-jong and I will say changes depending on the day. On some days Se-jong speaks more than I do, and on other days I won’t shut up (laugh).
--Since filming continued for about a year, was it difficult to break free from the role of Seon-ho?
WDH: Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought about Seon-ho without today’s interview. However, Seon-ho’s sword is in my living room, so whenever I see it, I’m going to remember (laugh). But because I can’t use historical speech in the drama that I’m currently filming, I try to forget as much as possible.
--Currently you’re in the middle of filming the drama “The King”, right?
WDH: In “The King”, one person plays two different roles. The show depicts parallel worlds. In one world, Lee Min-ho sunbae plays the emperor and my character, Jo Yeong, has been by the emperor’s side since childhood and is the captain of the Royal Guard. In the other world, I am Jo Eun-seop, a social service worker whose personality is the complete opposite to Yeong’s. I’m having a lot of fun filming this, so please look forward to it.
--What does “my country” mean to you?
WDH: I believe it’s the people around me. I have family, I have friends, and I also have colleagues. A life where I can live happily with all of them, that is my dream country, I guess. No one goes on without desire, so I want to live together while caring for each other.
--You’ve been called the “Monstrous Newcomer”. With this kind of recognition, do you feel pressured?
WDH: I’m always under pressure. However, I tell myself I can’t lose to it, I have to work harder to overcome it.
--Finally, a message to your Japanese fans.
WDH: 2020 was the year I definitely wanted to meet all my Japanese fans, but filming for “The King” started earlier than expected and hasn’t finished yet. I was incredibly jealous when I heard that Se-jong held a Japanese fan meeting at the end of 2019. When “The King” finishes, I would like to meet you all. Until then, please take care of yourself and be happy. I will do my best to finish my work and greet you in good form. If you haven’t seen “My Country” yet, I definitely invite you to watch it.  I also hope you look forward to “The King”.

another excellent scene from my country in ep 2: it’s obvious that the scenes with hwi and seon-ho getting their bows are parallels, largely in part because they come right after each other, but i find myself appreciating how the scenes are shown every time. seon-ho bows to his father and has to reach up to get his bow, since nam jeon is standing at the top of the steps, whereas hwi looks down at his father’s bow. nam jeon talks about seon-ho’s brother before handing the bow over, whereas hwi sees his name etched on the wood. it’s an extremely compelling way to demonstrate the difference in their families, with yeon declaring that it wasn’t their father’s fault (and thus indirectly implying that hwi shouldn’t let the shadow of their father hang over him), and nam jeon reminding seon-ho to keep in mind that he wasn’t the one he wanted — just min-ho’s spare, taking the things that should have been his.

So episode 7 and 8 was such a rollercoaster ride.
We got jealous Du-sik and just being petty whenever there’s a Hye-jin and Seong-hyun interaction;
Du-sik and Seong-hyun bromance. their dates are on another level please they’re so cute;
Seong-hyun being friends with gongjin squad;
The 3rd mystery of gongjin;
Nam-suk’s backstory;
Cho-hui, Hwa-jung, and Yung-guk love triangle (still betting for Cho-hui & Hwa-jung endgame);
Gongjin babies hanging out at Hye-jin’s house;
Mi-seon and Eun-chul love development;
Domestic SikHye;
Hye-jin and Du-sik hug;
And lastly, an almost 2nd kiss.
I don’t know where to start even. I just have these lots of theories inside my head. And let’s not forget that preview for episode 9.
