Dar Reads Lady Knight: Ch. 3

Finally back at it! This chapter covers a lot of ground considering it's fairly short, so I will probably have more to say than I did for the first two. As usual, commentary/favorite quotes are below the cut.

Love the Alanna and Neal moment on page 49... the whole "good question, next question" conversation. It would be super cool if we got a little short story of Neal's time as Alanna's squire. I can only imagine what that was like given their personalities.

"He said last night you're a bear for vegetables - Sir Nealan, that is" (pg. 50). Tobe's only been with Kel for a short time and Neal is already teaching him well, haha.

Cleon makes his entrance. I have to be honest, I'm happy with the decision Kel makes re: Cleon. She doesn't feel the same way she once did, and she knows it wouldn't be fair to either of them to try to continue the romance, Cleon's impending marriage aside. I was never a huge fan of Kel/Cleon, but I was glad Kel got to enjoy a healthy relationship while it lasted, considering how some of Alanna's relationships went.

"She didn't want Cleon as a lover now, of that she was sure. There was work to be done. She wanted no lovers until she had settled the Nothing Man's account" (pg 51). Not gonna lie, I really, really like these lines. There is work to be done, and devotion to duty has been the foundation of Kel's philosophy since day one.

I should note that I don't dislike Cleon as a character. He's doing the honorable thing by marrying someone in order to provide for the people he's responsible for as lord of Kennan.

I love the scene when Tobe asks Kel why she's crying, and her explanation: "It's not the war, Tobe. I've been shot at. I can bear it. I'm crying because my friend is unhappy and everything is changing." First of all, relatable. Second, I love the respect that already exists between Tobe and Kel - his first reaction isn't to make fun of her, but to sympathize.

Kel asking Duke Baird how he can still go and do his duty even after seeing the brutality of war firsthand makes me feel things. And his response that all he can do is his best. Ugh. Feels.

Baird asking Kel to keep an eye on Neal if they are assigned to the same post alsdkfj. Kel and Neal friendship 2kforever.

Owen's back! Gotta love Owen. The way he tries to be as formal as Wyldon trained him to be while still being irrepressibly Owen is so funny. What a gremlin.

Poor Kel, being worried that Wyldon doesn't trust her ability as a knight after all. If I were in her position, I'd probably feel the same about the possibility of getting a "safe" assignment. Especially since she knows that people will say she's not cut out to be a knight if she's not out on the front lines.

Kel and Wyldon's dynamic. Amazing. Wyldon has come so far since First Test, and Kel is willing to see that. I think anyone else would hold a grudge against Wyldon for the way he treated Kel if they were in her shoes, but she's willing to see past that.

Kel's going to do her duty if it kills her. This girl. I wish I could properly express what she means to me.

Mistress Fanche makes her entrance when Wyldon is showing Kel the refugees. Considering what she's been through, I don't think it would be fair to dislike her for her attitude.

"[Wyldon]'s happy, she realized, stunned. Training us - that was his duty. But he didn't like it. He's comfortable here, in the dirt and the cold, with people to defend" (pg. 70). I wonder if Kel realizes how similar she and Wyldon are when it comes to duty. She'll do whatever he orders, even if she privately disagrees or dislikes it, but at the end of the day she's happiest when there's hard work to be done.

The Kel and Owen moment at the end of the chapter. Kel's right - Owen is growing up well. They are 100% ride or die, and I am here for it. When Owen says he would do anything to help her, he means it. Kel hasn't had a lot of experience with that so far, what with several of her peers trying to sabotage her during her days as a page, so I imagine Owen's genuine loyalty must mean the world to her.

First impression

"I want to be like her so bad." Unfortunately I maxed out at 5'1" and my attempts to win the affections of the birds at my parents' bird feeder did not succeed. I could have tried lifting weights more; that one's on me.

Impression now

Oh my god she was 18. They put her in charge of a refugee camp when she was 18. No wonder all the adult refugees were pissed.

Favorite moment

Squire is my favorite book of the series, although I enjoy a lot of the school story elements from the first two, particularly when Kel's helping the other pages (and later training Lalasa). In Squire I always remember the part when Kel's prepping for her ordeal and meditates on serving the "realm" and reflects that while a lot of knights see it as this vague hypothetical concept, she's crossed a lot of the realm on foot or on horseback. She's gotten its dirt under her nails. She's met its people. She's more grounded than a lot of trainees in her societal role and it shows in how she treats people and how they respond to her. Imo it shows the series continuing to deepen and mature from its beginnings - I'm not a huge fan of the Alanna series and have only read it twice, but I feel like that was more a 'important people scuffle' narrative using 'the realm' as a backdrop.

Idea for a story

I love the idea I saw once that she'll become the training master. She's good at it! She helped the other pages, she trained the kids at Haven, she will kill hazing absolutely dead... also she's got a working relationship with the Chamber of the Ordeal which could be handy. Parent-teacher meetings where she's like "listen I expelled your shitty child for his own good. The Chamber would've killed him. Yes it told me that itself. Get out of my office."

Unpopular opinion

I think she could've stood to make Wyldon squirm a bit longer before forgiving him. Ah well she's young yet. She can revisit this.

Favorite relationship

I love her friendship with Neal a lot! They keep each other grounded and always have each other's backs. He's a romantic and a cynic, she's a realist and an idealist, he heals her, she makes him eat his vegetables. Whatever happens in their futures I struggle to imagine them not living in each other's pockets at least part of the time. (He'll probably come be the pages' palace healer when she becomes training master.) Also I really enjoy her mentor/mentee relationship with Raoul - he's a great teacher, they work well with each other, and thankfully considering Pierce's penchant for pairing her female leads with much older men, it does not go anywhere weird.

Favorite headcanon

I think on top of being palace training master her future should also include unofficially running the Tortallan version of the old sunshine senior animal sanctuary. She's halfway there already. Behold Lady Knight Keladry of Mindelan, training master for the crown, winner of the Scanran war even if no one can legally admit to that, and her 500+ elderly dogs, cats, birds, horses, and sundry. If you leave your animal unattended near her you may not get it back.

Kel/Neal

I think if there's one thing about me as a shipper these days, it's that I will absolutely ship the f/m pairing where the canon and the fandom both agree that their friendship is 100% better than any romance could be! In other words, while I didn't ship this when I was younger (I tended, and tend, to be a pretty face-value reader--Kel got over her crush, I was fully content with that), on my most recent reread I was very much going "these two clearly care about each other way more than they care about anyone else" and they just have so many sweet moments! I'm glad it's not canon, though, because Kel would hate being a duchess nearly as much as Alanna would hate being a queen. This is why Kel/Neal/Yuki is currently a winner for me.

Kel/Cleon

Like Alanna/Jon, one of those ships that makes me glad that Tamora Pierce believes in transitory teen romances! It's sweet (though I question the choice to have Kel date one of her former hazers, however much kinder about it he was than the others, in the anti-hazing-and-bullying books; for that reason, Faleron or Yancen or someone might have been a better call), and the progression and the end of it always feel believable. I like it for what it is, and feel no need for it to be anything more!

Kel/Dom

I like it! If it had gone explicitly endgame, I definitely wouldn't have cried about it, Dom is definitely a charming and endearing character, and I like how much he respects Kel. But I do feel a bit like Pierce went "ah, I like her dynamic with Neal but don't want her to be with Neal" and kind of invented Older Hotter Neal (Slightly Less Mean Edition). I will also say that it was a relief but something that made it harder to ship them that, on a reread, Dom clearly doesn't see Kel as a romantic prospect not because she's unattractive but because she's young! Maybe by the end of their Scanra adventure that is changing, but given the Numair and Daine of things it's nice to see that there's clearly no attraction for him while she's still a squire.

It’s not meant to be, but it feels cruel, to me personally, that Daine keeps fluttering in & out of these books just to heal an animal or “deal with” a griffin, but I can’t know what she’s thinking, and 90% of the time we don’t even get dialogue, just a “Daine came & fixed things & left” T_T

I’m sure it’s supposed to be like all the times Alanna popped up in The Immortals, only it’s way less satisfying b/c at least Alanna was, like, involved. And she & Daine formed a friendship. Where Kel & Daine aren’t really friends, Daine just assists Kel with animal problems. 

And maybe I wouldn’t be so bothered if, either a) I didn’t somehow, like, imprint on Daine (& Numair) so every even slight mention of them gets me or b) I’d waited to start Protector of the Small like I unintentionally waited to start The Immortals after Song of the Lioness. (B/c I know that was part of why I wasn’t getting very far with Wild Magic when I first started 3 years ago, b/c I’d just finished Alanna and wasn’t ready to move on. But, reading Protector of the Small has been the only thing keeping me from thinking too hard about Daine & Numair, and I don’t want to start any “personal” (b/c I won’t write them down, they’ll just be in my head) fanfics, until I have all of the canon down. (And I might even re-read The Immortals after I’m caught up, it’s not often a book series rises so quickly to the top of my favorites list.) It’s silly, especially since I won’t write it down, so it’s not like anyone will be like “that’s wrong!” if I don’t get canon right in the fanfic that’s only in my head...but...lol)

I’m glad that Kel made friends by the end of First Test, and that the pacing of Page was much better, b/c the tedium of page training, and Kel having no friends aside from Neal (and Roald), and being constantly bullied would have been torture. I should have known Tamora wouldn’t do that for long, lol. 

But oof, the stress of reading the trial & Kel’s anger...and like a true Tamora Pierce Heroine she couldn’t just sit quietly when there was injustice. It’s funny though, b/c I knew it was Joren even when it initially happened in Page. It was very obvious. 

Anyway. 

I’m only halfway through Squire, so I should get back to reading..

Okay so, I’ve been thinking a bit about the Protector of the Small Quartet again, (Love that series, so much.) And one thing I want to know is why aren’t there more headcanons of Raoul adopting Kel? I mean we all know she’s basically a daughter to him, and most people think she’ll become his successor in the King’s Own, if not Training Master. And it’s not like there isn’t already a precedent set for it in the world of Tortall, what with Myles adopting Alanna and all. It just makes sense to me, Raoul is lord of two fiefs, Goldenlake and Malorie’s Peak. Malorie’s Peak was his original fiefdom, and he was given Goldenlake later for services to the crown. He doesn’t have any children of his own to inherit them, he could have family who will inherit Malorie’s Peak, but it could be really cool if he adopted Kel and made her heir to his position as Lord of Goldenlake. I know he and Buri and now married, but do you really see them having any kids at this point in time? They have the Own and the Riders for that. And on Kel’s side she’s the youngest of seven I think it was, with little money etc, and little chance of being in the line of succession. She has the possibility of being given lands by the Crown due to her heroism, but I don’t see that happening any time soon, at least not til Roald is King. The only possible argument against it would be that Kel loves her parents and they love her, but honestly at the point in time they are at I think Kel is closer with Raoul than her parents, just through distance. Raoul was one of the first to fully get her to loosen up, and fully accept her instantly. I mean he had had practise with Alanna, and I am not at all saying Neal didn’t do anything, but Kel is comfortable with him, the way she is with few others, and willing to drop her Yamani mask, and tease and joke with him. Kel’s parents are good people, I fully believe that knowing they would struggle to continue providing for her and knowing that she would still also be their daughter they would be willing to share her, and allow her to further her position in life and influence so many more. Thus why I believe Raoul should either have adopted Kel, or have plans too.

a brief history, canon.

neal’s currently the only son of one of the oldest families in his kingdom of tortall, though that wasn’t always the case. in his childhood, when his two elder brothers were alive and well and becoming knights, he decided to study at the university to become a scholar and healer like his father. at age fourteen, his brothers passed in what was called the immortals war ( a war waged with and against immortal and legendary creatures ) and it wasn’t long after before neal left the university and took up knight training as a page – four years older than all of his peers who typically start at ten.

he was the sponsor of the story’s heroine, keladry of mindelan, in her first year, and that was the start of the rest of his life. what began as his attempt to make sure the only openly female page in the group ( the first in a century ) was safe became a fast friendship. kel had all the makings of a consummate knight. neal – did not, which was fine by him. he was content to make sure that kel literally kept her head on her shoulders and survived knighthood. not the easiest task.

they stayed best friends through all four years of page training, and remained so when they graduated to squires and studied with their respective knight masters. neal’s happened to be the king’s champion and only other living lady knight, alanna of pirate’s swoop and olau. she, like him, is a healer and taught him to fight as well as to refine his magic and become a respectable healer in his own right.

after earning his knighthood, neal was put in charge of the infirmary of the refugee camp haven, which kel was made commander of. haven was located on the border of their enemy to the north, who was waging a new war against tortall. after haven was destroyed by the enemy, kel ran off behind enemy lines to attack the mage who wrought the destruction. neal, along with their other peers, followed, and by some miracle kel felled the mage and none were brought up on treason charges. currently, they work in the same positions at the rebuilt refugee camp new hope.

for ease: in nearly every verse, he retains his profession as healer / physician / doctor / med student craving the sweet release of the oblivion. he’ll talk your ear off regardless of whether or not you’re listening. he’ll sigh DRAMATICALLY and accuse you of breaking his poor and delicate heart when you tell him to eat better. he’ll also mother hen you the second he gets the opportunity and pretend all the while that of course he doesn’t care.

Have I mentioned recently that I love Neal? Because I really love Neal. He’s smart, he’s funny, he’s sarcastic, he’s supportive, he’s a good person and a good friend. He was the first person here to really believe in Kel and show her friendship, and he’s been steady at her side ever since. He so easily lightens the mood, makes her punishment a joke rather than an embarrassment, draws the embarrassment onto himself (because he doesn’t really feel shame anyways). He’s a good egg.

Dar Reads Lady Knight: Chapter Two

Round two of my Lady Knight read-through! The weekend was a bit busy so I'm glad for some Kel time now. Commentary and snippets are below the cut!

Poor Kel, having to listen to Neal and Roald pine for their lovers. She's a good sport.

I forget that Cleon/Kel is still an ongoing thing at the start of this book. It's... okay, I guess. At least Cleon treats her well?

"She'd only just gotten her shield; there was so much to do before she could think of settling down" (pg. 25). MOOD.

The innkeeper at the Jug and Fire is a bitch. GET HIS ASS, KEL.

"Her inner self, the sensible part, shrieked that she had no business doing what she was about to do. She was on her way to a war; boys took much more looking after than sparrows, dogs, or horses" (pg. 29). LOL I love that Kel knows perfectly well that she can't win the fight with herself over whether or not to take in a stray.

Kel threatening to take the innkeeper to the magistrate over his treatment of Tobe. I feel like the fact that she knows the laws about indentured servitude (beyond, you know, basic human decency, i.e. not beating your servants) is another great indication of her role as the protector of the small. As a noble, she has no obligation to care about Tobe or the laws that affect him and other servants, but she does. Iconic.

"Even as she asked herself if she'd run mad, she knew that she couldn't have done anything else" (pg. 31). Kel in a nutshell.

"'You mean he's another one of your strays'" (pg. 33). Haha Neal knows her too well. I love their friendship so much

Love the parallels between Tobe asking Kel who he is to her and Kel asking Neal who she is to him way back in First Test. I don't know if that was intentional on Tammy's part or not, but it's a fun little detail.

I love that Neal takes the innkeeper's behavior just as seriously. And that Kel lets him have his moment without calling him on it because she knows he'll be embarrassed. Did I mention I love them??

Tobe being afraid that Kel is going to abandon him. Ugh, my heart.

I will forever giggle over the "Tobe and I have reached an understanding" exchange (pg. 45).

And off they go to the northern border. That's a wrap for chapter two.

How I feel about this character:

oh? You mean my son??? Very literally because I fully intend to name my future child Neal???? I’m not joking, I have had this plan for nearly a decade. He is my BOY.

Any/all people I ship romantically with this character:

Yuki, obviously. Kel, because they’re perfect in any form. Daine, in a hilarious one-sided way.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character:

Again, like, obviously Kel. Can’t be anyone but Kel. The best besties.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

While I like him and Yuki, I wouldn’t have minded in Neal didn’t get a love interest. It kinda felt like it was needed as a confirmation that Neal/Kel wouldn’t happen but he doesn’t need to be in a relationship to confirm that his friendship with another female character isn’t romantic.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:

Not to drag my other darling into this but more interaction with him and Numair. They both have similar interests wrt magic (and taste in women lol) and i wanted to see them interact. (Also because Neal always considered Numair a show off with how powerful he was while the one thing Numair is shit at (healing) is the one thing Neal is BEST at)

If you’re feeling more like an AU, though, I’ve got some other ideas hah.

-- Some flavor of Mother of Learning au, probably feat. Harry as Controller, with Tortall’s gods taking the place of the angels maybe, smashing together as many rbc, Tortall, and MoL elements/characters as you want, feel free to go absolutely wild here.

-- What’s she doing, during rev arc, having run off to go gallivanting across the world? Alternately—her parents track her down, and we get to see that reunion and dealing with the fallout from her ruse.

-- Convent au, aka she and Archie never switch and she goes off to AIM; this can be the AIM of rev arc or an AIM of your own creation based on RBC canon!

-- Genderbent AU, aka Harry’s a boy and Archie’s a girl but they still go for the switch.

-- If you know Fialleril’s Tatooine Slave Culture stuff you’re probably familiar with the motif of Ekkreth becoming a bird and flying away when his trickstering is over for the time being; if you worked that into a fic with Harry I’d love you forever for it lol.

 Arcturus “Archie” Black

We don’t get a whole lot of Archie in canon, so I’m down for more exploration of him, either through the canon lens or through the lens of rev arc.

If you want to go down the path of rendering Archie into a more Thom-like figure, either by power level or by his relation to the rest of the world, I’d be down for that, but please don’t take him in the direction blink did (aka, please do not give me depressed suicidal Archie).

Things I think would be cool:

-- Slice-of-life with Archie at AIM, especially if it’s not the AIM of rev arc, but either way works.

-- Palace au, aka he and Harry never switch and he’s got to go to Hogwarts, and what happens from there.

-- Genderbent AU, aka Archie’s a girl and Harry’s a boy and they still switch places.

-- For whatever reason, he needs to go to Hogwarts and pretend to be Rigel for an extended period of time; dramedy ensues.

-- Leaning hard into the Mother of Learning AU idea, and making him the Zorian to Harry’s Zach, less powerful but learning to work with what he’s got.

 Adriana “Addy” Potter

For this one I’d really like a future fic with a family focus; Addy and her family, once Addy’s old enough to participate properly in things.  What’s the world like for a noble half-blood girl more than a decade younger than Harry?  Do they live in Wizarding Britain, or have they moved elsewhere?  How has the fallout of the ruse’s inevitable revelation impacted her—if, indeed, it noticeably has?  Rev Arc and canon basis are both fine!

 Severus Snape

He’s such a great character I love him, also, like, I’d adore something that brought him closer to Myles’ role as the spymaster/character who goes “girl what girl all I see is a smallish boy who’s just what he appears to be, why do you ask”

Other explorations of The Life And Times Of Severus Snape, Halfblood Potions Master And SOW Party Member would be great too.

Rev Arc and canon are both fine!

 Ginny Weasley, Bill “Will” Weasley

Would love some youngest sib-oldest sib bonding!!  Also would love exploring Bill in the Lower Alleys, and Ginny learning about that part of his world.

IIRC we first see Bill in the Alleys in FF?  So if you go with rev arc I’d appreciate that being kept in, but assuming that much, rev arc and canon are both fine.

Obviously there’s more than one way to get to this character combo, but I was thinking something like this:

Aldon Blake is raised by his birth mother and schooled in America.  Harriett Potter can’t break through Dumbledore’s wards alone.  And so a law is challenged.

 Lily Evans Potter

Anything through her life would be great!  Key moments I’d be especially interested in include her discovering her magic and having to go abroad to school, her time at AIM (maybe being Exceptional for stupidly powerful wild magic?), her time in the Triwizard Tournament (which I’m big into, not that that should discourage you from writing something else), returning to Britain, her relationship to the British International Association (assuming I got that name right), her reaction to Harry’s reveal and her hunt for her elder daughter.  Some of these wouldn’t have to have a heavy rev arc influence, but I’m currently more interested in the universe/story set up in rev arc.

 Keladry Mindelan

Look at this point I’m this close to just straight-up asking for a crossover, I love Kel and I’d love to have more of her in the world of rev arc.  I’d love her getting involved in Britain’s issues, whether through Neal or otherwise; she’s got no reason to be personally invested but she is the protector of the small, after all, and I can’t imagine she likes the way they run their country even before the end of Vanguard, which I’d imagine would only make it worse.

I would adore something with the Lords Rosier and Black, and awkward formality, and Comedy™ which I suspect there may be little of in CC (it is a war after all), so I’ll take what I can get lmao.  Obviously there’s no way around what happened to give Aldon the title, but I’d rather neither that nor the war be a focal point; I’m more interested in dumbass shenanigans for this.

anyway i’m thinkin abt neal, & how much i’ve like. literally adored writing him for the last sevenish years, and gods !! i just want to talk about my favorite headcanons that i’ve integrated into his characterization ,, 

his very idiosyncratic crabbiness when he’s tired -- how every single one of his healers know THAT tone of voice and stay carefully out of his way until he’s had something to eat / managed to catch some sleep because gods help anyone in his one-man warpath. 

the fact that kel is the only person on earth that he will obey unquestioningly and without a single fight -- lots of complaining, sure, but kel is still a neal-wrangler and he WILL ride into enemy territory for her. or sleep when she tells him. 

his CONSTANT. WAR. AGAINST OWEN. his specific feeling about all the boys -- his tolerance of merric, his intolerance of cleon, his vendetta against owen. 

HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH ROALD II OF CONTÉ. 

the way he figured out how to circumvent the immense difficulties of healing oneself by circulating his magic with another mage’s. 

the entire way the aftermath of the battle with blayce played out -- the fact that he stopped healing gil because he knew that he would have to save his Gift for so many more people -- and likely kel. dom being with him for so much of it and prompting him to make that decision; carrying kel down, so desperate to heal her that both of his arms started sparking green the moment she was in them. doubling down on his efforts to increase his Gift and stamina after the war so that he would never be in a situation again where he had to choose whom to heal. 

his extremely onesided war against That Basted, That Fiend, That Braggart, Numair. 

enchanting tokens of protection and health for his loved ones as gifts.

F: What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? consistently? god, uh. i think probably kingdom hearts? but that was years back. maybe stranger things since i did get into it like, a month after s2 aired but it was a backburner fandom. wait no nm it’s descendants. cause i’ve been more or less YES DESCENDANTS GOOD a lot for the last three and a half years. so. also kind of tortall bc i get sporadically bitter about neal/kel every month or so and have since about 2007.

Q: A ship you’ve abandoned and why: oh okay this one is kinda tough but i guess the best example is probably jay/carlos and mal/evie from descendants? like, i have nothing against the ships themselves and there’s plenty of material there. BUT. the fandom, rachel. i hate. the descendants fandom. so goddamn much. because they’re really obnoxious (never 4get the j*ylos stans who called d3 the straightest of the movies despite jay/gil being as close to canon as we were gonna get for a descendants movie just bc carlos was still with jane. also all the j*ylos stans who complained about them ~no homo’ing~ j*ylos in d2 because carlos liked jane and jay and carlos’s friendship got less focus while completely ignoring the harry/gil kiss that was scripted, filmed and then cut!!!)

being human: s3 established that annie feels things that people feel when she touches them which leads me to the headcanon that mitchell, nina and george made all her old favorite foods for, like, an entire week and ate them so she could enjoy them again, along with other things. (we do not discuss the plot that involved that part i don’t acknowledge 98% of s3 for a reason.)

descendants: uma’s mother is ursula, this is canon, but i fully headcanon that her father is a deity of some flavor and she, like mal, is a full on demigoddess. aside from that, i also will live and die by the idea that ben can go beast without audrey’s magic being involved. also carlos is non-binary, evie’s a trans girl, harry is the definition of chaotic bi and non-binary and gil’s a trans boy.

elementary: i. i have so many. where do i start. um. easiest is this: during the time skip in the finale while joan underwent chemo, kitty came back to new york and archie and arthur spent, like, all their time together while sherlock and kitty traded off watching the kids. also: joanlockbell ot3 or bust.

the get down: shao got the fuck away from annie and got a happy ending and met zeke again at some point and they lived happily ever after. also DIZZEE IS TOTALLY FINE.

gilmore girls: finale what finale. revival what revival. logan and rory are happily married and working on their careers and EVERYONE IS GOOD AND NOBODY IS PREGNANT.

gossip girl: dan’s not gossip girl what the fuck show. trans girl jenny or bust. also trans girl blair.

harry potter: [insert requisite dean/seamus and sirius/remus comment here] also harry became a goddamn teacher fuck that auror shit that boy needs to get away from more fighting goddamn. also someone please get him into therapy. please.
