Notably, I was able to return to a particularly intense and interesting dream after waking up and getting back to sleep.
Big fancy fucking corporate party filled with what felt like an extended circle of net.goths and assorted similar types. For those of you who know what Convergence is, imagine that, but in a weirdly buttoned-up hotel, but featuring an even more extravagant array of drugs and booze, of which even I partook - some pills that were the color of Mountain Dew, something that was apparently a combo of oxy, cocaine, and ectasy, and a cannabis-infused pretzel stick.
I was assured they would fuck me up. The only notable effect on dream-me was some dry mouth and an inability to pour the fancy blue and purple liqueurs into their weird glasses to get the proper layering effect the professional bartender did. They tasted like slightly warm slurpees.
Unfortunately, I knew exactly one person there, who I saw for ten seconds and our standard greeting (him throwing me over his shoulder and smacking my ass for the entertainment of others), and I spent 99% of the dream being flirted with and awkwardly not knowing what to do about it, and not catching anyone's name due to the noise of the crowd everywhere.
I also had to drive a small robot (think the mouse droids from the Death Star) to pick up widgets and doo-dads to form a bomb, which was supposed to be detonated underneath some Evil Executive's[1] office as part of the festivities, but nobody would give me good directions as to where he was, where the party was, or how to get anywhere useful, so I spent a lot of time standing around, sweating like a motherfucker in my now-defunct leather duster, and trying not to get drenched by a collapsing downspout in the hotel's lobby pull-through parking area, where several people were standing around to smoke and such.
[pee break]
Managed to get back into the dream, where I ran into @mcmcgreevy and regaled him with most of the above, after randomly encountering a former colleague struggling into some hockey goalie equipment, and regretfully pointing out that I hadn't brought mine with me so he could use it instead.
More drugs, alcohol, and bafflingly frustrating flirtation continued, though I was able to successfully pilot the bomb droid, but the target was in the next room and was unharmed.
[1] Played by Hank Azaria, who was married to Sela Ward, and who was understandably very upset that the bomb damaged his big octopus squishmallow

What's the most goth outfit you've ever worn? Also I hope you're doing well!
I am actually worse than ever, but I’m eating cookies about it, so it will be fine.
I had a lot of beautiful stuff I used to wear when I was a young, thin, goth club regular (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday! I had a usual table and a usual dancefloor spot and usual colleagues whose names and Looks I knew but who I rarely spoke with [and my usual girls I got ready with and chatted/drank/danced with, of course!]).
I found a photo, not of anything I describe below. This is from Convergence IX (annual net.goth gathering), 2003. So I was 31, and in a Velvet Goldmine moment (hence the silver lashes glued to the top lid of one eye, bottom lid of the other). GOD I LOVED THOSE PANTS.
Tumblr media
Oh, those skinny ‘90s/’aughties eyebrows! I still have that hair; I found it when I redid the bathroom last month, along with many other hairpieces. I wonder if some young goth would want them? Meantime I just hung them in the closet.
Some memorable things:
I had a black vinyl bustier/minidress with lenticular insets that looked cute with a tutu under it. My BFF at the time and I cultivated a particular look that had a sort of Lolita silhouette--Giant ponytail falls, narrow waist, flared skirt, platform boots. We felt like superheroes. Tipsy, snarky superheroes.
My favourite skirt was made by a designer in Boston called Eddie Kent, who restyled vintage clothes and had a little boutique in the vintage store I managed for a bit. One of his collections was inspired by Cher, and it was all black and silver; lace and leather and velvet. . .I bought a lot of that collection. The skirt was ankle length, made of angled gores of multiple fabrics so it had a lovely swirling quality. Black velvet, black/silver lace, black lace. . it was lovely. I wore it with a top from the same range, black pleather, fitted, open in front but laced shut (piratical!), with long fishnet sleeves with points down onto the backs of my hands and drapey shoulders I can’t describe. I loved that outfit. Long black and white ponyfalls all down my back, with matching ribbons and flowers or other gewgaws (our motto back then was “I want to put that in my hair!” so we wore circuitboards, playing cards, bits of fur, whatever we liked).
I had two long, drippy sleeved velvet coats I wore with long dresses, including a 1950s black lace ball gown with a faux-bustled back. I cut off the sleeves. It had buttons up the front. With petticoats under it, that dress was a vampire fantasy! One Halloween I wore that with a velvet coat that nipped in my waist (my waist was so tiny!) and styled a wig with piled braids atop looonnng waves, and wove fairy lights all through it. I think I stuck in these black chopstick-things I had, with sprays of slim/stiff paper, I think they were for flower arrangements but they just burst out everywhere like matte-black fireworks. Flowers and ribbons. Fantastic.
LOL I was just thinking about this coffee table book I have about the Mods in 1960s London, which is an oral history full of people who remember the collar on a particular white shirt they wore 30 years earlier. Those are my people. I still have some of my club clothes in the back of the closet, but only for nostalgia purposes. I miss the smell of that club; at long last none of my clothes or hairpieces smell of it anymore.

[1] Blame JAK for that one [2] Dedicated to DJ Ricky Prinz, Munich's finest [3] What an opening Act, Axel is really a Modern Day Sex God TM [4] They were doing there own music for the actual fashion show [5] Sadly I wasn't able to enjoy that show as much as I wanted. I was fighting with a headache. And had to re-sort all my CDs after drooping 'em all to the floor earlier @ when we got the notice that everything should start 1 hour before schedule [6] To be honest I didn't like most of what I have of BM on CD but that Show altered my view 180 degree. You guys ROCK. I haven't seen that much energy since Antiworld last year Herbstnächte. BM is a band we should really look forward to see in Europe. [7] Sorry from here on it isn't in order and I'm not sure if I got all songs 'couse I wasn't able to write down the playlist [8] And don't forget what Sheena became [9] Should be in Order from here on [10] Well sometimes strange things are happening an so I had an other set to do on sunday don't try to find me on the web site it wasn't officially announced [11] Just o entertain the crew while doing last preparations [12] Some more songs that I haven't written down just to get a feeling for the volume and decided after that to go as loud as that damned thing will let me go. [13] A local Munich Punk/Power POP band that were playing @ the new years party I did with Ricky earlier that year. [14] Who ever will do Convergence 9 try to get Ghoultown [15] A little tribute to some of the great bands we had the pleasure to here the last days [16] That one goes to Miss Janette [17] That one goes to Maria my beloved one who was turning heads all weekend long [18] Thanks to Mr. Black and Psyche for giving me a break and to Sexbat for checking back from time to time to see if I need an other [19] Can't read that one, sorry :-( [20] This one is for the best Stage Manager on the planet [21] For Brian, not exactly Twisted Sister but the best I could do for you. [22] Time to honor the best Masks [23] From now on it's dedicated to Bella Morte [24] From now on it's dedicated to Purp an all others who still hold the flag of deathrock up. [25] This one was a request of the bartender girl [26] I wanted to end the night with "Beerdrinkers and Hellraisers" by Motörhead but I forgot it at my hotel room so I ended the night with my preferred version of Paint it Black ;-)

if you have the time, i was wondering if you have any personal suggestions for researching goth? i kinda consider myself one n i've done a lotta reading but 1) i live in megachurch hq Colorado n i don't know how to find the goths 2) all the books n essays i've found have been SUPER white and SUPER skinny (im former but not latter) & i /know/ goth exists beyond this tiny selection of ppl and that goth welcomes more than just that type of person n i wanna read different experiences?
Honestly this is hard for me to answer I’ll be real w you. Because when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I was a baby bat just getting into the subculture it was a totally different situation. there was no “researching” per se like I literally just started dressing weird and hanging out with ppl lol. the internet wasn’t ubiquitous then to the point that goths who hung out online actually had their own label lol (net.goths). I mean there was alt.gothic on Usenet and...uh. email lists. So I got involved literally from ppl I met irl bc there was massive overlap with the local goth scene and the other circles I ran in (witchy/queer/rennies/nerds). I found out about bands from digging thru CDs at Tower Records and I found out about parties/events bc I hung out in brick and mortar goth boutiques and Vampire the Masquerade LARPs. This is a generational gap thing and I literally don’t know what to tell you. I didn’t read anything I literally just met ppl...irl...heh. I can’t tell you how to be goth or w/e. first of all there’s no one way to do it. there’s 9000 subgenres of music and style that no one can agree on. I’m heavily into Victorian/Edwardian goth fashion and darkwave music and you may not like that shit. It’s all good. expose yourself to as much as possible. In some ways you have it easier than I did coming up bc Spotify exists. it depends on the area, there’s a ton of goth FB groups (which yeah FB I know but I’ve met some cool ppl). there are goth scenes everywhere even if some are on life support. even in fundie focus on the family ass colorado. I promise. you just have to look. also I highly rec gothiccharmschool on tumblr for baby bats and newbs bc she’s been around forever (I actually found her site years ago before tumblr was a thing) and she knows what’s up. she’s also really sweet and gives good advice.

Summer Vacation Boredom Project:
AKA what I'll be doing in between working and hopefully improving my dead social life:
Fixing up the convoluted mess that is the Goth TV Tropes article. Jesus Christ! Not a single reference to the proper music or even any useful fashion or literary references, just a bunch of people thinking it's a synonym for spooky. Would also like to get a good list going of actual goths in the media, not just spooky ethereal girls. I suspect I might thin the herd a little.
Also probably creating a Useful Notes page.
Respectable information sources would be very much appreciated.

Marge submitted this photo with the comment "Here’s one from the Spring bank holiday net.goth picnic in 1997.. it was Thomas’ birthday, he’s the one in the white shirt on the right of the middle standing group, looking to his left. It’s Chris, Kieran and Charles in the tree on this occasion, and I’m sitting at the front, on your left. :)"
Another submission for the net.goth up-tree series! We haven't had a group photo for a while so this makes me happy.  There's quite a bit of smiling going on, but I imagine that's because this group of netgoths only ventures out to see each other and this tree once a year and, lets face it, everyone needs to exercise their facial muscles now and then (and smiling looks far less ridiculous than facial yoga).
The up-trees are looking intimidating. I'd like to think other people wanted to get up the tree but these three said 'no' in their best bouncer voices and tried to take up as much space as possible by stretching out.  It looks like a summery day but they're mostly in the shade.  The supporting cast are interesting, as always. It's Thomas' birthday which is why he is excused from looking at the camera.  I think that guy second from the left is wearing a cape.  Bonus points for cape-wearers. Always.
4.5 out of 5 - I wonder if these net.goth dwellers still meet at this sacred tree?   I think we need a log (get it!) of coordinates of good trees to climb.
