So my dad is somewhat of a computer wiz and I asked him about some of the tech stuff in the magnus protocol
my dads says..
"I was involved in a rollout of about 1,000 NT4 workstations over four campuses back in the day (mid to late 90s)
Our machines started at Pentium 120 with 32Meg of RAM and 1.2G hard drive in a mini tower case. Apart from the drive bays in the case front for 3 1/2 floppy disk drives and CD ROM drives they don't look all that different to a small gaming pc today.
The mice still have balls though, the keyboard have big 5 pin DIN plugs but otherwise are just as dishwasher safe as modern ones.
If connected to a network you are very likely to find its Novel Netware 4.1. The networking will look like a thin black cable strung from machine to machine with a little silver T shaped connector on the back of each one, apart from the first and the last they have 'terminators'.
You probably won't be connected to the internet yet, there is probably no TCP/IP on your LAN at all, only Novel IPX. The ZenWorks NT4 workstation management tools from Novel are sublime, it take Microsoft quite a while to copy them.
If you are in our publishing class we will be teaching you Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark Express. If you are in our business course we will be teaching you Office 97 with that bloody paperclip. We will also be teaching you Groupwise, Microsoft haven't copied that off Novel yet so there isn't any Exchange.
If you have email its probably Pegasus, maybe early Eudora. Its unlikely you can email out of the organisation you are in. Internet connected mail is still to come, mind you so is any interoperability between mail systems. You expect attachments to work?
We still taught some things on Windows 3.1 so our machines all boot from the Lan initially to fetch the boot menu. You can choose Windows 3.1, NT4, in some classrooms Win98, or you can re-image you machine if its broken. Thats all done in assembler in the boot sector on the network boot disk image, theres no PXE yet.
Internet arrives one day in the form of a product called "Instant internet", it will share its single built in 36Kb dial up modem with a whole classroom of only IPX connected NT4 workstations if you install the Winsock32.dll file that it comes with.
You are probably looking for Mosaic or early Netscape if you want a web browser, Altavista is likely your search engine.
Better things are coming though soon we have a whole 128K ISDN service to share with about 10 classrooms, we have TCP/IP on the LAN now. Your classroom is still going to have to book when it wants internet access though, as that's still woefully inadequate.
I think the Macs are System 8 or 9 they have not made the jump to the unix kernel of OS X yet, they keep my colleague busy, she seems to be reinstalling the System folders on them on a daily basis.
One day you find I have changed the default home page for all the machines to Google Beta.
My job is done, the world as we know it has been ushered in."
Dad worked In TAFE (only Australians will get that lol) for a few years as well as other tertiary education providers.
This is probably not going to be very relevant for anyone but I figured having some sort of info available could be helpful for other people's writing, fanfic or whatever.
Feel free to send asks for any clarification or further info

NetPro magazine October ‘97 Cont. Final
First picture shows the weird live web cameras that were broadcasted online for the public to see. Some are definitely fetish related. Second picture hosts different chatrooms on the left page, though they are mainly aimed at "beginners," there are some that give you the feature to add* a chatroom to your site. Page on the Right shows off some guys with too much free time like me. 3rd Picture is a two-page spread of various dating sites, some more specific that others, and some definitely a red flag. Last picture is of the back of the magazine, an ad for NetWar .com, now an internet game hosting site.

‘’The Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace’’ (Barlow, 1996) is hailed as a landmark paper in academic circles and deeply explores the concepts of Internet freedom and government non-interference. However, Grossman (2013) states that governments had already been suspicious of this declaration, hinting at the necessity of substantial intervention by powerful entities, like governments, to address common problems in digital space governance.
There is a common belief that oversight in digital spaces can enhance internet security. This understanding of the importance of government assistance has led me to wonder: What would happen if the internet were absolutely free from government influence, as Barlow (2016) envisioned?
I guessed almost everyone knows the positives of this situation, so I would mainly like to discuss the negatives. Apart from direct issues like threats to personal privacy and security, the spread of misinformation and inappropriate content, I going to discuss three additional points:
Legal and Ethical Complexity: Without a unified legal framework established by governments, addressing online crimes, copyright disputes, and other legal issues becomes more complex.
Market Domination Risks: Large digital media companies might gain greater control in an environment lacking government oversight, leading to market monopolization and exacerbating inequalities.
Deepening the Power Divide in Digital Space: The lack of government regulation in the digital space may expose the public to the policies of dominant companies, thereby deepening the power gap between companies and users.
Therefore, I think Barlow's (1996) vision of an untethered Internet—where everyone is free to express themselves without fear of repression or conformity—seems inappropriate for today's digital environment.

2152 - Oct 16 Zapatista
Tumblr media
PRE-LECTURE AND HOT TAKE
I have never heard of the Zapatistas, yet the reading states that they have a long colonial history. The Rand Co reading states that "intellectuals perceived the Zapatistas as the world's first post-communist post-modern insurgency". More simply put, they are a revolutionary leftist group that emerged in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas in 1994. They are concerned about indigenous rights and posses an anti-neoliberal ideology.
On January 1st, 1994, the same day NAFTA went into effect, the Zapatistas began an uprising as they thought the trade agreement would negatively impact the indigenous communities.
The EZLN (Zapatistas) adapted after the hostilities began and abandoned their guerrilla warfare tactics to attract non-state actors. The text says that this was the transition from the war of the flea to the war of the swarm. I assume that it has to do with changing tactics to attract NGOs. I am still confused about this statement. I hope that the lecture clears this up!
The three layers are the base of indigenous people with egalitarian ideals, the second layer of educated non-indigenous leaders, and the top layer of transnational NGOs with strong networks. At first, I thought that this was an interesting combination; however, after reading Beautiful Trouble's tactic of Distrusted Action, it makes more sense. This demonstrates the breadth and diversity of the movement.
The people of the Zapatista movement are courageous. In Beautiful Trouble, when discussing what it means to know your cultural terrain, it says that "waiting for the truth is lazy politics. The truth does not reveal itself by being told. Must be told and told well." The Zapatistas knew their cultural terrain by switching from traditional Guerrilla warfare to the principles of netwar to attract NGOs with internet access and, therefore, provided navigation through the broader cultural landscape.
Social media must make it incredibly difficult to "know one's cultural terrain." Due to the constant switching of trends and the shifting of attention to several newsworthy, it must be challenging to understand and then use the terrain to your advantage. The Zapatistas had access to a wonderfully networked group of non-governmental agencies that could aid in this task. However, not all movements have this privilege.
The floating signifier theory is extremely relevant to social movements today. However, my hot take is that I wonder if social media complicates this theory because so many people have access to a platform to voice their opinions. But hey, maybe that is really the beauty of an empty, loose symbol. It can resonate with people for several different reasons.
Going forward, how effective is their strategy long-term? The insistence on autonomy is powerful, and using floating signifiers to achieve this is crucial. However, by staying outside Mexico's national political processes, might the movement risk missing opportunities for broader reforms and improvements for the indigenous communities? But, then again, maybe they know their cultural terrain better than a white middle-class Canadian university student.
POST-LECTURE / MODERN-DAY CONNECTION / REVISED TAKE
Given the current state of affairs abroad, the lecture was highly informative and resonated with me. Having taken the required MIT course, political economy of media, I was aware of the prevalence of neoliberalism and globalization. However, I needed to learn more about the context of how these ideologies function in the global south.
In particular, I was unaware of the roles of the World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund and other similar instructions play in bleeding the global south dry.
For my revised take, I would like to revisit the concepts of "war of the flea" and "war of the swarm." This lecture clarified the concepts of "the war of the flea" and what a 'swarm' is. Comparing the flea to a mosquito, parasite, or anything tiny enough to attach to a media structure and take advantage of it made much more sense. I also liked seeing examples of birds or bugs swarming to see how decisive distributed action could be.
I thought it was especially neat that you (prof. John) had first hand experience with the Electronic Disturbance Theatre and their Denial of Service Acts. Thanks for comparing it to a 404 error for it to make sense in today's world for a typically non-activist.
I think the rise of the Zapatista is similar to the violation of human rights occurring in Gaza. This humanitarian crisis relies on the use of social media, much like the Zapatistas relied on their network of NGOs with internet connection.
Some TikTok Creators, such as "Plestia," are examples of knowing your cultural terrain and using it to your advantage. The Zapatistas adjusted their tactics to attract the help of NGOs. Similarly, this creator began to make TikToks in ways that would appeal to those of the global West. Through the platform, she can navigate the broader cultural landscape. However, this also shows the potential 'pitfalls' as this creator needs to be aware that she should exercise caution when using the creative platform of TikTok to avoid deeply rooted regressive ideas and ideologies.
I would argue that the free Palestine protests happening worldwide are an example of distributed action as they demonstrate the movement's breadth, diversity and power. People in real life and online are swarming. Most are taking place at points of decision to put pressure on key decision-makers.
