Hiii 💌🎨 Our cozy queen, I hope my headcanons make her justice.

1. Okay, so in eskam there was never any covid, but in MY headcanon, Emma manages to fly back to NYC just in time for lockdown measures to take place. This causes a major shift in Emma's lifestyle, as she used to go out partying and drinking a lot in the weekends (as we saw). Emma is a social drinker, and so she more or less quits drinking during this period.

2. In the meantime, she decides to make learning to cooking her quarantine goal. Emma has never really cared to learn to cook, she used to eat a lot of frozen food or she'd get food from work. She and her roommate create a fusion of their respective cuisines that would terrify most Spaniards, but she and the roomie think it's great!

3. Also during this time, Emma realizes she misses one of her friends way more than everyone else. Emma had never really contemplated her sexuality, because tbh she didn't really date after the incident. She knew she found women attractive, but she hadn't really cared to examine it and she didn't feel like a ~real bisexual~. BUT she does miss her friend (an agender lesbian named Maxwell) in a special way. They start having dates over Zoom and then have a relationship when lockdown measures are lifted. And the first thing they do is to get drunk af because it's been so long. 🪁

The viewers didn’t get any information about what happened to Kasim after he was outed for almost two weeks. Kasim himself vanished from both on- and off-screen content for about four weeks, and in that time, other people weighed in on the situation: Lucas, repeatedly, and Dounia. Why push the resolution back for weeks and let people other than Kasim talk about what happened to him?

When Kasim did finally reappear and spoke for himself, he said that Amira outing him was fine, even good. Why write themselves into this corner? Why create such a set of circumstances that either Amira did an unacceptable thing, or Kasim’s concerns about coming out to his family, significant enough to cause him to use Amira, seem unfounded?

I believe it was @norgestan who wrote earlier about how either Dounia (and possibly, by extension, Kasim’s Muslim community) will be portrayed as homophobic or Kasim as unreasonably worried, and of course she would turn out to be right.

That's indeed a twist.

The spoilers show he IS gay, he had a thing with Lucas and still wants to be together (I think he even drops the word “love”??). Which would be fine but they’re making Lucas be awful about it and pressuring him to come out. There’s also some questionable words used that are..... not good. A friend said it’s basically Elite s2. I mean, I understand her. She's fighting with her best friend, a dude she barely knows is using her, she's made feel guilt for being in a relationship with a guy she likes, middle of Ramadan. Everyone has their breaking point. But still, two of her friends are LGBT, she should know better than to out someone.

Hi anon 🧃 Honestly I wouldn’t even have a problem with her outing Kasim, because I accept that Skams characters need to fuck up in order to get their character development. 

My issue is that the way this was brought about was absolutely unbelievable. Like @norgestan and others have mentioned before, Amira could’ve easily said last week, “your brother knows I don’t like him and have never liked him, I was clear on this to him, and if you have any further questions just ask him.” But the writers didn’t have Amira say something so sensible because then we couldn’t have gotten this clip. And that’s just one instance in a sequence of events that barely passes muster tbh.

If I can’t believe the characters would normally act like this, if I can’t suspend my disbelief, then it’s hard to get invested in what’s happening on the show, to say things like, “I understand her,” or “I don’t understand her.” It’s like watching a puppet show from the side of the stage where I can see the puppeteers pulling the strings.

Hi, you are one of the few blogs who write really intelligent well thoughtout metas for Skam. Can you suggest more such blogs I could follow. Suggest anyone, really. I trust you. Vapid fangirling has its benefits, but I need to balance it with some quality analysis and opinion pieces. I'm sadly not able to find many such. I do not mean to sound condescending to other members. Each fan has equal worth in fandom but I am just not able to easily find what I want, could be looking in wrong places.

As for recs!

(DISCLAIMER: when it comes to these blogs, I don’t necessarily agree with everything they post or on every single topic. We’re all different people coming at these shows from different perspectives. Recommendation isn’t necessarily 100% endorsement!)

@lightsandlostbells is inactive these days, but posted some of the best and most comprehensive posts comparing the remakes to Skam. And by doing so, pinpointing what made Skam so special and where the remakes were failing. I made an easy list of all her reaction posts. I still eagerly await her wtfock s3 post which will probably murder it.

@norgestan has written some really good meta for Skam España, and is making her way through the other remakes as well. In her posts, she has pointed out things that had escaped my notice or I hadn’t seen as harmful. Super worth it, particularly if you’re interested in Noora seasons.

@norwaydumpsterfireremakes should be listed in any such rec post tbh. Her interpretation of the remakes from a (US) postcolonial POV should be required reading for any Skams fan, just to get people to watch these shows more critically. If you’re interested in any Skams character of color, then follow asap.

 @floraflorenzi doesn’t post meta all that often, but when she does, it’s well-written, concise and decisive. Flora was one of the people whose posts I would keep reading before I made my own tumblr. I also consider her gifsets to be meta in animated form, because she makes her points by highlighting certain scenes and dialogue.

 @naybetamira has posted a bunch of Skam España meta. Her writing style is more warm and loving, for a change of pace. 💛

@cfgc I started following recently, specifically because I was interested in her analysis of Lola Lecomte’s sexuality. I don’t even like Skam France or watched Lola’s season, so that should tell you how interesting I find her posts to be. 😛 I would also recommend her tags to the gifsets she reblogs. (As I would with pretty much everyone else on this list.)

With Amira Naybet’s season coming up, I would also check @rumaan (white hijabi), @nolabballgirl (hijabi of color) and @overthemoonwithme to get the perspectives of Muslims and/or women of color. I can’t remember if Overthemoonwithme is Muslim (sorry 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️). 

If you for some reason feel like venturing out to twitter, @procrastinatingbisexual is there at @zoskazu, and her understanding of her own generation (Gen Z) and female characters have influenced and impacted the way I think about these characters, particularly for Druck and lovleg. (She’s currently into The Umbrella Academy but I’m hoping the upcoming seasons bring her back to the fold gvvhvh.) 

@skamenglishsubs posted a commentary series going over cultural and subtext elements in Skam, which I recommend if you want to have a better understanding of the motifs Julie Andem used for each season. 

And finally, though you asked for meta, I do want to recommend a couple of gifmakers, because their gifsets have often made me notice a detail I overlooked or a microexpression that informs a character: @matteoflrnzi, @kikimachwitz, @katyazhuravlik, @naslostcontrol.

Season 4 i defiantly agree with you about. It wasn’t the worst shitshow I’ve ever seen, but defiantly needed more work and better endings. Some parts were great, some parts were sucky. Could have been a lot better done.

But I actually really like season 3 and how they did it. Of course it had its faults but overall I thought I was a great season with some interesting and important points. So I’m kinda curious as to what your thought are?

Hi anon! ☔ Honestly I really love s3 still, and I agree with you it was enlightening and sparked discussion of red flags and personal experiences. Which is honestly what any Skams season should aspire to.

I referred to the budget specifically because, for as much as I like s3, it was horribly paced. Miquel threatens to upload Nora’s nudes online halfway through the last episode, ffs!! I refuse to believe that the team would have turned down a longer season that they could’ve paced better, if they would’ve had the option. There was so much they could’ve touched on, but simply didn’t have time for, like an actual Nora and Emma talk onscreen, going to therapy, going to support groups for women with similar experiences, and so much more. In short, there should have been more time spent on the recovery part, and I want to believe there would’ve been if they’d had the budget to do it. 

As @norgestan mentioned on the reblogs, it’s interesting that eskam did an 11-episode s1 (same number of episodes as Skam s1) with a NYE special and bonus clips, a 10-episode s2 (same number episodes as Skam s3) with a bonus Youtube channel... And then a 9-episode s3 (Skam s2 was 12 episodes) with its own side channel, and a 8-episode s4 (opposed to the 10-episode Skam s4). Imo, they were given a smaller budget for the latter two seasons, it wasn’t their choice.

Are you gonna watch Skam CL? I have seen some of your post on the tag and I see you have some apprehensions on the remake and since you are Chilean I would like to read your point of view

If I’m honest, I have mixed ideas but it’s mostly because I’m conflicted with the idea of the remake and this is not something recent, it’s something I have been saying even when the idea of Skam CL didn’t exist.

The thing is I really want to see a lot of things addressed on the remake and I’m absolutely excited for that part (if I’m not mistaken @norgestan talked about “funas” in a post and I really want to see if they are gonna handle that topic) but also there are so many things I want to see addressed properly that I think this could lead me to be way too critical about the remake and I don’t want that. I feel like our country is living in a very complicated time and there are a lot of sensitive topics that could be hard to address and that could be very divisive for the watchers (including me) so this part has me half excited and half afraid hehe.

At the same time, I’m just... tired of remakes. I keep up with Druck’s new generation and I really enjoy it, but this also means that I’m not sure if I want to see Eva’s story again. I might check out the remake from very far because finally (FINALLY!) we have latam remakes, but we will see.

I agree with so much of your last anon response, but I do want to point out one thing about Kasim coming off as the villain: we are in Amira's POV, and if I were in her shoes I would feel let down too. She has the idea that Kasim likes her because that's what she's been told by Dounia and quite frankly by Kasim's body language on the blind date. So to find out that this attraction wasn't true would feel like being lied to. While not a great reaction to someone coming out, I get her reaction

part 2 of last anon: also we have to remember that her loyalty lies with Dounia more than with Kasim... they've only met twice including today. But regardless idk wtf the whole let's fake date thing was about but I am glad Amira shut that down ASAP. Anyway, keep up the hot takes, even if I don't always agree with you I love seeing and reading your posts!

Hi anon 🥞 I think you meant to send this to @norgestan, so I will pass on the compliments for you. As for me, there’s a difference between villainizing Kasim at this point in the story, and portraying him as the villain that Miquel, for instance, is supposed to be. The cinematography in this clip was definitely meant to villainize Kasim, but ultimately Kasim isn’t supposed to be the season villain - as Ela said, Skam doesn’t have that many full on villains to start with.
