With its glossy, blood-hued crocodile physique, shiny golden hardware, and retail value of $52,000, this bag is just about unimaginable for all but a relatively small number of consumers to get their hands on. I am selling my bag and the client quite rightly needs to know this before purchase. Since the bag has always been in my household and rarely used but sent to Hermes to be conditioned, each to Her es, Paris and to Hermes, NYC (Mr. Claude worked on this bag until he retired). I don;t believe there was ever 18K yellow or rose gold hardware by Hermes. A Birkin 30cm in Togo leather – a regular type – will set you again around $11,000 in the United States, whilst you may choose it up for less than €8,000 in Europe, saving you virtually two and a half thousand dollars. https://skel.io/replicas-hermes-bags/hermes-crocodile-birkin.html As each Birkin is a bit of unique craftsmanship, taking a number of days to supply, they come with an unique price tag. However, resellers contribute to that last figure, and never everything comes directly from the Hermes headquarters. The Hermès Birkin bag’s birth occurred when British actress Jane Birkin met Hermès Chief Executive Jean-Louis Dumas again in 1981. Back then, Birkin spent most of her career based mostly in Paris, France, where she quickly rose to fame. Much just like the world of luxurious watches, Birkin baggage have become an funding that you just make a reasonably profit off further down the line. The French style home began in 1837 as an equestrian brand, selling saddles, earlier than they ventured into the world of leather-based items and fashion. "Customers can also track the worth of the actual Birkin bags they've their eye on with Clair," says Gorra, which can allow consumers to stay inside a specific price range and make an informed buy. Keep in mind that, although an Hermès Birkin is not a typical luxurious buy, it is one that does not start reducing in value from the second you've it in your arms. "The process of buying an Hermès Birkin bag on the first market is shrouded in mystery to maintain the allure of exclusivity," says Gorra. The retail value on a Himalayan birkin can range based mostly on size, with the largest size of 40cm standing at around $120,000. Coupling that price with the problem of buying one from the notoriously selective trend house makes this bag practically unattainable. Hence, at auctions, prices for these baggage soar at a base of round $90,000 and reach as far as $380,000 for the variations with diamond-replete hardware, depending on measurement and hardware sort. In the private reseller market, costs can vary from above $100,000 and climb to $150,000 with ease. A few years in the past, we created a list of the priciest purses in existence and the ranking has now quickly changed. The costliest Birkin was offered at an auction with a price ticket of $380,000. Not shocking that it was none apart from the Himalayan Birkin bag, and it was bought for such a hefty price due to the albino-white crocodile pores and skin materials it was crafted from. Family-owned for 5 generations, Hermes right now represents one of the useful manufacturers of luxury purses, but two centuries in the past, Thierry Hermes started his skilled life as a leather maker. Renowned for producing high-quality equestrian goods, he was the seemingly unremarkable son of a French immigrant father and a German mom, with nothing distinctive anticipated of him. "There are lots of locations for vintage baggage. There aren't locations that permit them promote at market value," he mentioned. "We do not underprice or overprice. We let individuals compete and it sells for no matter folks want it for. We are really trying to be the market." Rubinger does not deny that these baggage are "not the norm" for many American households. Buyers with means are paying for each the brand and the standard, Rubinger explains. On Monday, Heritage Auctions is internet hosting in Beverly Hills a "Fine Jewelry and Luxury Accessories Auction" that features 68 Birkins out of 275 baggage. One 2016 examine found that Birkin baggage had common annual returns of 14.2% between 1980 and 2015, considerably beating the S&P 500 Index in returns over the same interval. In April 2010, Hermès introduced that the ready listing would now not exist, implying that these bags are doubtlessly obtainable to most of the people. Sizes vary from 25-, 30-, 35-, to 40-centimetres, with travelling baggage of 50- and 55-centimetres. It also comes in quite a lot of colours corresponding to black, brown, golden tan, navy blue, olive green, orange, pink, powder blue, red, and white. In total the web public sale made $2,266,750 (£1.73m) - the best whole for an online handbags sale at Christie’s. wikipedia hermes crocodile birkin Christie’s had auction gross sales in 2019 that totalled £4.5 billion.

Its not boring!!! 😂😂
If you want to be cathartic, list the shit he'd hate and be weird out about. I'd love to hear it too. I love rants!
Yeah, about NSFW, I can't think of anything on top of head that he'd like. In the sense of "omg this is amazing", there's things he'd appreciate, maybe.
😖
I mean, speaking from experience, when you go to a completely different environment and nothing is familiar and all the rules are flipped upside down, and everyone around you just knows what to do and are surprised when you don't and you feel like you have to learn to walk again... It's interesting at first and a lot of people really like it, but it can also be irritating to the point where you're uncomfortable with everything around you, no matter how objectively good it might be.
I think Bucky would, honestly, dislike most things at least in a passive if not an active way. Everything would seem worse and ugly.
People's clothes, their hairstyles, the shoes, restaurant menus and cutlery, Christmas decorations and stationary, pens, watches, faucets, and books.
Even children's cartoons. And I grew up with Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Johnny Bravo, all of those, they are my childhood, but I've still got to admit they are grotesque to look at, they are so ugly, they're nothing like the Mickey Mouse or Tom and Jerry cartoons which were so pure and cute.
Music, let's not even get started. He basically admitted in TFATWS that he "likes 40s music so..." he doesn't even listen to anything after that, is the implication. I certainly doubt he listens to anything that came out starting the 60s.
Movies. He'd probably stick to 40s films, some 50s ones, but from the 60s he'd probably pull a face at some of the fashions and themes used and would feel like they don't speak to him.
Architecture. Glass coffins. No beauty, no style, no soul, no relevance (it's why I had Dolores in NtD work for an Architecture firm, she was a soulless villain from the start).
This was the Soviet Union's pavilion at the Paris Expo of 1937:
Tumblr media
This was the German pavilion at the German Expo of 2000:
Tumblr media
(also, this was the Expo's official mascot, Twipsy, for extra yikes)
Keep in mind that Bucky may have been a 40s guy, but he was born in 1917. Which means his parents were 1880s kids or so. From the 1850s and up to the 1950s, the US and Europe were at their most decorative, most ornamental. Art Nouveau and Art Deco were born in that timeframe. In Britain, the Arts and Crafts movement flourished.
So what sort of things would he have been exposed to from his parents? What did he grow up thinking is good and beautiful? What would he grow up thinking is worth fighting for?
Some things do maintain the 40s style he would be familiar with, so he could find suits to wear, shoes and ties like from the 40s, and cafes or eateries that keep that ambience, as well as buildings that survived from that time around NYC. But he would have to deal with being the odd man out most of the time.
I think he could tolerate most things, like product packaging and phones and furniture and such, but other things would seem ugly beyond his point of acceptance. And, generally, he would not feel it is relevant to him or made for him.

After Our Bodies Meet January 9 – February 14, 2021 The gallery will be open every Sat & Sun from 3 – 6pm and by appointment
Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present After Our Bodies Meet, a group exhibition curated by Daniel Johnson, featuring works by Margrethe Aanestad, Daniel Arturo Almeida, Dalia Amara, Cyriaco Lopes, and Randy West.
In the novel Tar Baby, Toni Morrison wrote, “At some point in life the world's beauty becomes enough. You don't need to photograph, paint or even remember it. It is enough.” Exploring themes of love and memory, the artists in this show have created works that grapple with how we relate to each other and ultimately posit the question: What is enough? Whether through the investigation of familial bonds as with Almeida and Amara’s work, romantic love in West’s series, or the nature of being in the work of Aanestad and Lopes, the works in this show evoke an ethos of delicateness and a celebration of impermanence.
Margrethe Aanestad
is a Norwegian-born artist (1974), living and working in Brooklyn, NY and Stavanger, Norway. Randy West (born 1960 in Indianapolis, Indiana) is an American fine art photographer, perhaps best known for his distinctive and avant-garde scanner use of the photographic medium, as seen across several series of his work. West is also on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts, and a director of the school's Master of Fine Arts program for photography, video, and related media. West has been represented by the Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York and the Craig Krull Gallery in Los Angeles. Daniel AnTon Johnson is an artist with a diverse practice based in photography, language, film, and video. His work examines how technology shapes notions of identity within popular culture and contemporary visual media. Loungefly Pennywise Mini Backpack
Funko Europe Exclusive
Pennywise already looks scary, but in his form as a Loungefly mini backpack, he also looks scarily good. While he is not normally known for looking like a bag, the evil Deadlights entity from It Chapter Two shape shifts into this fearsome fashion item designed to always be looking out for another friend to float with. As the dancing clown dangles slightly from the pack, wearing a distinct mask of malice, he’s additionally quite useful with an interior spacious enough to store all your terrors.

Funko Pop! Vinyl: DC Comics: Batman #4 (Artist Series With Case) Figure
Funko Europe Exclusive
Batman sports a lot of costumes, and it is well documented that he loves to slap his logo on pretty much everything. So this Artist Series figure makes sense as well as looking pretty cool. The Bat Signal camo effect may not allow the Dark Knight to blend in, but the artistic approach might impress Kyle Rayner.

Funko Pop! Vinyl: Star Wars: Boba Fett (Futura) With Case Figure
What happens when the galaxy’s most famous bounty hunter meets an iconic New York City graffiti artist? You get this Funko collaboration of Futura and Star Wars. Combining Futura’s abstract approach to urban street art with Boba Fett’s signature colours, the limited edition Pop! Vinyl is striking without sacrificing the bounty hunter’s menacing demeanour. Also, it makes sense Futura painted for The Clash, because Boba is undoubtedly one of the most punk characters of Star Wars.

Funko Pop! Vinyl: It: Pennywise With Spider Legs (Glow In The Dark)
Pennywise feeds off of tasty, tasty beautiful fear, and his spider-clown form will create enough of it to feast on. The shape-shifting entity appears in phantasmagoric fashion in this Pop! Funko Pop! Vinyl: Marvel Zombies: Zombie Daredevil
He was once the superhero known as a Man Without Fear, but Zombie Daredevil is an undead man who instills fear. With green goo oozing from his mouth, and exposed decayed flesh, Zombie DD is infectiously cool as he leaps in for a bite. Because Matt Murdock is from NYC, this Pop! Vinyl is a 2020 New York Comic Con exclusive and features an NYCC sticker on the box.

Funko Pop! Vinyl: Masters Of The Universe: Grizzlor (Flocked) Figure
Beast Man who? When it comes to pure brute strength, the ultimate man-beast of Eternia (and Etheria) is Grizzlor, a member of the Evil Horde and local urban legend. Though Grizzlor is typically known for his out-of-control mane, this flocked Pop! Vinyl shows he can be wild and wavy — and looks ready to sink his teeth into either She-Ra or He-Man.

Funko Vinyl Soda: Queen: Freddie Mercury Figure
In 1986, Freddie Mercury took the stage with Queen at Wembley Stadium wearing a yellow jacket and triumphantly punched the air with a clenched fist. More than three decades later, it remains an iconic moment in rock ’n’ roll, which occurred during Mercury’s final tour with his band. The historic pose is now captured colourfully in this Vinyl Soda figure, of which only 20,000 were made, and is presented inside a stylized soda can with a collectible disc. What might make a collector especially go (radio) ga ga is the fact that there’s a 1-in-6 chase variant featuring Freddie in a glittering grey jacket.

I’m Really Struggling...But trying to focus on the positive
Hi Skippy,
This is a very long message, and I’m so sorry to bother you when you’re so overwhelmed with the PH/MM news. But I’m really struggling.
A few weeks ago, I posted that I had a terrible upper respiratory infection and that I had family visiting from Europe and was hoping to get better. I kept praying, and luckily, I was well enough to be able to spend several wonderful days and evenings with them, despite my pain. We had such a great time; besides the fact that they’re fun, they share my values and are very polite and loving. One of their goals was to meet NYC firefighters, as they are volunteer firefighters in their country. We visited a fire station downtown, and both my cousins (one who had carried his volunteer firefighter clothing & his/my grandfather’s country’s flag through the entire day in a backpack in 85 degree heat and changed into his clothes right b4 we got there) & the local firemen were thrilled. It was so amazing to watch, as the NYC firemen embraced them and gave them a tour. It actually attracted much attention to people walking by, who also wanted photos taken with the firemen. I was joking that they needed to donate to the 9/11 fund, and they were willing to do it! Wish that had occurred to me after 9/11!
Unfortunately, since then, I’ve gotten a severe ear infection which has consistently gotten worse, and is quite painful and dangerous for me. I had many ear infections as a child (sadly, I didn’t have the most attentive mother, and I remember crying in my crib due to the pain, yet she never came.) I’m not looking for sympathy, just stating the facts.
As an adult, I was fine, but in my early 20’s I burst my eardrum on a flight. I had surgery, which resulted in many complications (one of the bones behind my eardrum had deteriorated) which led to more surgeries. In retrospect, I never would’ve agreed to the subsequent surgeries, as they didn’t help. I had a prosthetic device to replace the bone inserted several times, and it didn’t work. After the last surgery, my body rejected the implant, and it was protruding through my eardrum (yeah.) Unfortunately, my doctor during that time was in her 40’s and wanted to be a star…many people don’t believe this about doctors, but it’s true. (I actually learned this after much research…they want to be published and my ear is so messed up that they want to be a hero, even if it’s not fixable.) I finally found, let’s just say, an elderly doctor who was the best doctor ever. I was scheduled for yet another surgery with the ‘star’ doctor, and my gut feeling was to say no. So I found the other doctor and he cured’ me right there. I’ve been fine for 10 years! Gave me a local anesthetic, and literally pulled the implant out of my ear with tweezers. I’ve been perfectly fine since then (granted, I have to do many things to keep my ear healthy: I wear a hat constantly even if it’s it 40 degrees, I have many steps to take when I fly (Sudafed, Afrin, etc.), and I can’t let water in my ear. Sadly, the brand of earplugs that I’ve used has been replaced by private-brands & they do not work//hence my infection; water leaked into my ear. If anyone else here has ear issues: please just buy the brand ‘Mack’. Nothing else works. I love CVS, especially since they stopped selling cigarettes, but in this case, their private brand had assaulted me.
After caring for myself for 10 years, this is horrific for me and it’ due to a horrible product.
Anyone in need for prayers are to talk or to rant....are a priority....thank you so much for your beautiful story about the firefighters!  I loved it!  And thank God for making you well enough to enjoy your special visit!
You certainly have had struggles my friend.  We will of course pray for you. Are you sure the brand you need isn’t anywhere else?  Just because one place doesn’t have it doesn’t mean some other place or country doesn’t have it?  Maybe Canada has? This is so awful to be back in pain after things were going well.  I’m so sorry you are going through this all again....prayers will help....take care, and God Bless....
Tumblr media
Prayers for Anon who once again is suffering from a severe ear infection.  She had relief and now because a below standard product is suffering the consequence.  We pray for her recovery and ask for her to be restored to good health.  We ask that God blesses her ear and that she no longer suffers from infections, if it be God’s will!  We pray that Anon can stay in good spirits as she faces this trial of pain once again.  We pray she can find a product that works for her, and protects her ear from harm.  God Bless Anon.🙏🏻💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Hometown?
Zurich, Switzerland.
Where are you now?
After living in London, NYC and Los Angeles for the last few years I am now back in Zurich again.
What's your current project?
I am currently working on a couple of things simultaneously. I just wrapped a Dance/ Fashion video that was filmed in one of Switzerland most beautiful churches. Additionally, I am choreographing two big events as well as working on my own script and creating a platform for female artists to show their work.
Why and how did you get into theatre?
Theater has always been a big part of my life. My mother not only sent me to ballet classes at the Opera House Zurich when I was four years old but also to a children’s theater course. I also had the privilege of my parents taking me either to the theater, opera or ballet. I was fascinated by that world and it is where I always felt the most at home no matter what country I was living in. Originally my dream was to be a musical theater performer. I did my BA in London in theater dance, worked on a couple of shows as a dancer but then moved back to Zurich to focus on my choreography. I choreographed for some smaller musicals, dance shows, commercials and thought workshops all over Europe. Along the way I always felt that something was missing, and I was lucky enough that I could assist the director in one of the plays I was choreographing for and that is when I realized where my true passion lay: I wanted to become a director.
What is your directing dream project?
I do not necessarily have a dream project but many plays or musicals I would love to direct for instance Nick Payne’s Elegy and Constellation or two of my favorite musicals Cabaret and West Side Story.
What kind of theatre excites you?
I love the theater that pushes boundaries and explores story telling in new ways BUT that still keeps the core of the story and is truthful to what the piece is about. Theater that you cannot help but sit at the edge of your seat and that touches every fiber of your body. I also appreciate theatre that stays with me for a couple of days and that makes me rethink my choices or lets me see the world in a different light.
What do you want to change about theatre today?
Currently I am very much influenced by how the theatre world is in Switzerland. Sadly, I had to realize that it is still very patriarchal and still not enough female directors are working. And it is not even about the fact that we do not have enough female directors, but I think we are not really given a chance. That is why I am also creating this platform to showcase female artists. Additionally, I want to push the collaboration between different art forms to use each other strengths and differences in order to best and most truthful tell our stories.
What is your opinion on getting a directing MFA?
I think everyone has to decide for themselves if they need an MFA or not. I for myself knew, that coming from a dance background, I felt like I needed further education. But I met many other directors who just sort of got into it and they are doing great too. I would definitely do it again because through those three years getting my MFA at UCLA I learned not only about myself as a person but also who I am as a director and what the stories are that I want to tell. What makes me and my voice unique and that is also something that I found through the right guidance of my professors.
Who are your theatrical heroes?
Ivo van Hove and Pina Bausch inspired me a great deal, but I constantly meet directors who inspire me and who I can learn from. I think that all of us have a very unique voice and no matter how famous you are, what theatre you are working in, what big or small scale production you are directing, we can always learn from each other and inspire each other to create work that will hopefully inspire, touch and maybe even change how people see their life’s and the world.
Any advice for directors just starting out?
Go to the theater, watch movies and TV series. Read plays, novels, diaries, biographies and anything around the play that interests you. Travel. Meet other directors, playwrights, actors. Observe the world with an open mind and an open heart. Look for the stories that give you goosebumps and that makes your heart and soul jump the second you read it. Be truthful to who you are and what you can do and what stories you want to tell.
Plugs!

A New Film-school for Moving People
❍❍❍
Tumblr media
The Interview with "Academy of Moving People and Images" artistic-director Erol Mintaş and curator Elham Rahmati took place in an unplanned café somewhere in Helsinki. The new school is free of charge and open to all “mobile people”. The next deadline for application is on the 28th of February.  By Hami Bahadori 31.01.2019 ---
Hami Bahadori: Before we start, how do you feel about the opening of the Academy at the Museum of Impossible Forms? I was a bit surprised to see that many people came on a random Friday to Kontula, while the metro was shut down?
Erol Mintaş: It was great, even though the metro was closed. [laugh]
Elham Rahmati: I think a lot of people are excited about the project and we already received a lot of support.
Hami: Great, let’s start. I am in love with the name of the academy, do you want to tell me where the name has come from?
Erol: There is, of course, a story behind it. When we were doing our test-workshop for the film academy, the name was “Mobile Film School”. And the word mobile referred to our life situation of being mobile. Then we found out there was a school with the same exact name somewhere in the U.S.
Elham: Conceptually, that school was completely different. They were going from city to city. So, the school itself was mobile and had nothing to do with mobile people.
Hami: [laughs]
Erol: We already knew what we want. The school is for film and moving image, and it is for all the people who have been experiencing movement in their lives. So, the name naturally came together. You know, the name is a very difficult issue. As a filmmaker, I know, because when I make films, finding the titles is very difficult. It was the same with the finding the right name for the film academy
Hami: I love that the word “people” is before the word “images”. Was it also important that the idea of movement also applies to the school?
Elham: Yeah, that’s basically the main point. It serves people who in one way or another have experience mobility. Mobility, not in a sense of traveling a lot, but the experience of relocating home. It can be for many reasons such as study, work, migration, seeking asylum, etc.
Erol: Also, we don’t want to again frame people with the same mainstream words that carry a certain weight with them, whether positive or negative. We have to reinvent the vocabulary and also question the existing vocabulary that is used.
Elham: Yes, and that’s the reason we stress on using the term “mobile people” is that it conveys what we want to get across. For example, words such as refugee and asylum-seeker have been used and misused in so many problematic ways that are stigmatizing people. Once we say “mobile people” it puts everyone together.
Hami: Can anyone come and participate, or do people have to have some relationship with mobility.
Elham: Anyone who comes from a mobile background is welcome to apply. Be they migrants, asylum seekers, student, etc. If someone is a Finnish citizen but their parents come from a mobile background they’re still eligible to apply.
Erol: There are also these words that try to push people in a corner, frame them and keep them there. I don’t believe in having any kind of border between people. We don’t want to be in a position of power although we realize sometimes it is inevitable, our academy can only admit a few people and that selection process already puts us in that position. The whole idea of the Academy is that we provide a common ground, to share knowledge, tools and networks. We are also learning along with everyone else who’ll be participating.
Elham: It is not just about lecturing participants. The lecturers are also there to learn from the participants --we prefer to call it participants rather than students.
Hami: So, the School is going to be based in Finland? And participants have to be physically present.
Elham: In keeping the idea of moving people and images, the academy is also going to be in a moving state within different institutions and platforms in Finland. Another important aim of the academy is to provide different networks. After finishing the 1st year, the participants are going to be familiar with so many institutions, and you will be connected to the arts and cultural scene and a receive a certain degree of visibility and networks which you can take advantage of in your career. It is a beautiful thing that so many institutions and actors within the cultural scene of Finland have come together to support this project. It is very encouraging and tells us a lot about the will that exists for change when it comes to diversity and representation.
Hami: Let’s go way back. To some degree, I am familiar with both of you and your art-works. I think, there is something fascinating there, something between history and geography and also the differences in culture. So, now I want to ask about history. How did the idea of the school come to you in the first place?
Erol: When I lived in Istanbul, my filmmaker friends and I were interested in issues such as “How to make the film industry more diverse?” We started to work on this issue, tried to create films, spaces and also platforms. Simultaneously, I kept making my own films and telling my stories. But as you know, in Istanbul, the situation is very different compared to here [Finland]. When I came here, these stories and issues stayed with me. I met a lot of people who had a mobile background in multiple cities around the world. In Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, LA and other places. People were talking about how difficult it is to get into the film industries, especially when you are new in a place.
Later I was in the jury of the Istanbul Film Festival. I watched a lot of films in one week. And almost all the films were “talking about” immigration. Actually, not just film festivals, but Biennials, galleries, and other places.
Hami: What do you mean “talking about”? “more voices” or the same people representing others and mediating?
Erol: Same people from certain geographies keep telling stories about vulnerable people and mediating them. At that time, I started to feel very weird, I wasn’t able to really explain myself. It’s very personal. It was two years after this experience that I said to myself, why not I share my network and give whatever I have to others, so they can tell their own stories.
Hami: It’s very interesting because these issues also exist in the art world. We see a shift in perspective, on “who is representing who”. Not only in topics related to migration, but also on more universal phenomenon such as climate change. In 2017 Venice Biennale, we saw paintings by the Inuit artist Kananginak Pootoogook which was a surprising move by the curators. Instead of curating an artist from NYC or Berlin to talk about climate change they picked an indigenous artist to talk about his personal experiences on colonialization and its relation to climate change.
Elham: Hmm. But very slowly. There have been so many outrage from our communities on this issue. “stop misrepresenting us, stop speaking for us”. More people are realizing that there is something very problematic. They either speak for us or bring in people from our communities who they can manipulate into telling stories that fit their political agenda. By they, I mean different Western foundations, production companies, etc. who profit from projecting and selling a certain image from a non-western world that is miserable and helpless and needs to be liberated or intervened in.
Our aim is to have everyone tell their stories in the way they like. Of course, we have our own red lines ––As long as your films are not sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, Islamophobic or contain any other form of hate speech or patronizing attitude towards a certain minority.
Erol: This doesn’t mean that they can’t talk about things they like. If people feel they want to talk about some issues, they can do it as long as it’s their choice. But, also, we have to question what are the choices and where are they coming from? We should think about how much of our choices are really our own.
Elham: We encourage everyone to tell their stories in a way that is not affected by the market. There is a big difference between stories that actually come from immigrants and their life experiences versus the stories with certain formulas that for example Hollywood tries to sell, immigrant success stories, grateful refugee stories, etc. We should be able to imagine and dream of a film industry that is open to more honest and less market-driven representations of mobile people.
Erol: We are not expecting our participant to only make immigrant or refugee stories, they can tell us a love story or a science fiction one. They don’t have to share their personal stories if they don’t want to.
Hami: When it comes to film, the other problem here is the role of the education, which most of the times boils down to ethics. In another word, while school is trying to make “successful artists”. It’s telling students what not to do if they decided to go somewhere exotic. Particularly, in documentary and ethnography film-making, which still has a reminiscence of the detached, sovereign and unchallenged gaze of the observer.
Erol: Every media has its entertainment part that deals with capital, selling, celebrity stuff, famousness, etc. It also has another part which enables people to express their ideas and philosophy or to change something by sharing and communicating. This is what we call the “artistic” part of any kind of media which lets you communicate what you deem as valuable to the audience.
Elham: We have to mention something important here about the academy and one of the things that makes it unique among other things. A free film-school with an English working language doesn’t exist in Finland. As far as I know, there is no such a platform in Europe either. Film academies charge students very high amounts of money which very few people can afford. This is one of the reasons that film industries are often elitist and very difficult to enter.
Erol: A free film school is so unusual that some people think that there is a fee for this academy as well, I want to clarify that AMPI is completely free of charge.
Elham: It’s interesting, We are getting messages from people in other countries across Europe asking if they can apply.
Hami: …But they have to be here physically. right?
Elham: Yes, and the priority is for people who are already in Finland. But if you don’t live in Finland but are committed to moving here for the sake of this academy then you can certainly apply and we will take your application into consideration.
Erol: The participants have to be present at least, 80% of the time. And for us, the most important thing is the result, which is the films. We wish our participants to make strong films at the end of the year.
Elham: We also hope that AMPI can create a strong community, generating collaborations between artists and lecturers, or lecturers among each other.
Erol: We have a lot of the key players in the Finnish film industry and the art-scene working with us, whether as collaborators or in the board of advisors. Lena Horne met her life's successes and difficulties with a level of honesty and intrgrity that endeared her to millions, making her an iconic presence in the popular culture of her day. She came from an upper middle class, mixed race family but also was the product of a broken home. She moved around a lot as a child, staying with various relatives across the country. She was living with her actress mother in NYC when she joined the cast of the Cotton Club as a chorus girl. Her big break came when she joined the Noble Sissle band in 1935. She made her first recordings with Sissle in 1935. She left the band when she got married, but the marriage struggled and she soon returned to performing. She joined Charlie Barnet, recording with him in 1941. Her most impressive work with Barnet can be heard on "Haunted Town" and "Good for Nothin' Joe." As a black singer in a white band, her records with Charlie were groundbreaking, but racial hardships on the road caused her to leave the band to look for work closer to home. She made a name for herself singing in the progressive night club Cafe Society in Greenwich Village before moving to Hollywood.

Her few recordings and club appearances led to work in the movies, where her rare singing ability could be viewed alongside of her striking physical beauty. The success of films like "Cabin in the Sky" and "Stormy Weather" made her a star, but her contract demanded she not be made to play the role of servant, which was the usual placement for black performers at the time. While getting such a contract was a victory for her, it also led to issues with the distribution of her films. "Stormy Weather" would give her a signature song, but would also mark the last film where she was given dialogue. Future movies would only show her singing in segments where her role was not integral to the plot of the film. This would allow segregated distributers to cut her scenes in areas of the country where black performers could only be portrayed as servants. She married white orchestra leader Lennie Hayton in 1947 in Paris, as their union was still illegal in California. They kept their marriage secret for two years.
youtube
Her film work was sporadic, but she kept recording and playing in clubs. She was caught up in the anti communist fervor of the early fifties, which she weathered better than many of her piers, mostly because it was not her own actions but  her association with Paul Robeson and others that tainted her. She enjoyed success in Europe during the red scare, but was working steadily in the U.S. by the mid fifties. Her activism during the civil rights struggles of the sixties made her one of the most prominent entertainers to fight for the cause, cementing her stature in the black community. Her steady work in shows and on records kept her in public view throughout the sixties and seventies. Her career hit it's highlight in 1980 when her one woman show "The Lady and Her Music" became a sensation. Many accolades followed, including the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor in 1984. With the focus on jazz, she continued to record into the 1990's, but gave few in person performances. Lena Horne passed in 2010 at the age of 92. Mourned in death as she was loved in life, her legacy will undoubtedly last long into the future.
