Octopoda. This order is made up of octopuses, predatory marine creatures with eight limbs. Their soft body allows them to squeeze trhough small spaces. They are capable of camouflage and are among the most intelligent animals.
Nautilida. This order is made up of nautilis, which have a unique planispiral shell, and move via jet propulsion. They're morphologically veyr similar to their ancient relatives, and are often called living fossils.
How many arms does the seven-arm octopus have? Despite it's name, this species (like all octopi) has eight! The eighth 'arm' is actually modified appendage called a hectocotylus that males use to fertilize the eggs of females. The hectocotylus is typically keept coiled in a sac under the males' right eye, making it easy to overlook when counting their arms.

If you send me proof that you’ve made a donation to UNRWA or another organization benefiting Palestinians, I’ll make art of any animal of your choosing.
work was BAD today but i had a moment where i recognized "i am uniquely capable of solving this shitty problem and helping these families. it's good that i'm here" and it was still BAD but reframing it like that really helped
went over to my friend's after work and we ordered chinese food and talked about our relationships and it was so so so so nice to see her and catch up
my person came over to spend the night and they walked into my apartment and immediately started hanging up my octopus tapestry that fell down a few years ago and that i haven't been able to rehang by myself and i've been sad about it for a long time but they just hung it up without me even asking 😭😭 they keep doing little things to like take care of me and help me, things that it would be hard for me to ask for. i love them so much.
Heat stress from global heating could lead to impaired vision and increased deaths of pregnant mothers and their unborn young, Australian researchers say
Octopuses could lose vision and struggle to survive due to heat stress by the end of the century if ocean temperatures continue to rise at the projected rate, a new study has found.
While previous research has suggested octopuses are highly adaptable, the latest research found heat stress from global heating could result in impaired eyesight and increased deaths of pregnant mothers and their unborn young.
The researchers said loss of vision would have significant ramifications for octopuses as they are highly reliant on sight for survival. About 70% of the octopus brain is dedicated to vision, and it plays a crucial role in communication and detecting predators and prey.
Researchers exposed unborn octopuses and their mothers to three different temperatures: a control of 19C, 22C to mimic current summer temperatures, and 25C to match projected possible summer temperatures in 2100.
Octopuses exposed to 25C were found to produce significantly fewer proteins responsible for vision than those at other temperatures.
“One of them is a structural protein found in high abundance in animal eye lenses to preserve lens transparency and optical clarity, and another is responsible for the regeneration of visual pigments in the photoreceptors of the eyes,” Dr Qiaz Hua, a recent PhD graduate from the University of Adelaide’s School of Biological Sciences and the study’s lead author, said.

Flapjack octopus vs. dumbo octopus: The Opisthoteuthis californiana octopuses are known for flattening out their body, while the dumbo octopuses are known for their ear-like fins that are flappy.
Flapjack octopus adaptations: The eyes of the flapjack octopus is round, outstanding, and bovine-like, while their fins are ear-like. This offers the whole creature the form of a staring face, sufficient to startle its enemies, specifically the dangerous predators. The very length of these Opisthoteuthis califeorniana octopuses allows them quick cover inside crevices or beneath rocks if attacked.
They had been located across California at depths of 1148 ft (350 m). They've also been sighted in parts of Japan, including 1738-1837 ft (530–560 m) off Kashima Nada, the Bering Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk, central Honshū within the northwestern areas of the Pacific Ocean, to southern parts of California within the northeastern parts of the Pacific Ocean
