Ok. Daemon AU. Totally open to thoughts / suggestions / entirely different directions. Starting with the main three, obviously.
Edward I think needs something small and unexpected that he would try to hide from others, lest it give away that Blackbeard is not as he seems. Presumably he would have settled right after killing his dad so it could tie in there too. Lots of contradictions going on here... dangerous / aggressive, but also probably something pretty. Duplicitous, if I can make it work. Vulnerable, but also defensive. My first idea is actually some kind of crab, maybe? Still thinking about it. I also thought about a hummingbird but idk if that one really fits, and a snake is too obvious (and passably cool) unless its a really good one.
Stede I feel like is the kind of guy that gets something absurd. The fic I just read did a fancy peacock which worked, but I think I want to incorporate the crushing vulnerability and lack of self-esteem with him too. So I'm thinking... what about one of those fuck-all massive moths? There's a lot interesting here with themes of transformation and flight and your whole soul being an eye-catching fuckery (eye-spots 100%) but also fundamentally it's a bug. And not even a butterfly. Delicate and useless and too weird to even be the right kind of delicate and useless. Yeah?
Now Izzy.
Izzy has several obvious animal motifs I'm skipping past right away - dogs and sparrows - because I think I can do better than a dog and I just read a sparrow. First instinct was some kind of waterbird - ideally hitting a nice balance of too fancy and too scruffy to be cool or impressive, and of course it needs to mate for life. Might have tripped into a great option right at the start of my speculation. I present... the Anhinga / Snakebird:
It's pretty big. Lives around the Caribbean. They actually swim in the water with just their heads above it and skewer through fish with their beaks. Fun fact, though, is despite swimming they do not have waterproof feathers - meaning they can't stay in the water very long and then have to fan out their feathers to sun dry. Territorial. And also the males have to bring the females all the nest building materials because she refuses to collect any sticks herself even if they are right next to her, which I just thought was funny.
Only thing I'm not sure about is the mating for life vs monogamous for just a breeding season thing.
So... thoughts? I'm gonna keep thinking out loud (via tumblr posts).

Our Flag Means Death !Daemon Au
Heavily influenced by a fantastic fanfic I read on AO3:

Stede Bonnet aka 'Gentleman Pirate' is an albino serval (or wildcat)
Edward Teach aka 'Blackbeard' is a golden eagle
Jack Rackham aka 'Calico Jack' is a wolverine
Israel Hands aka 'Izzy' is a Doberman Pinscher
- Dobermans are known to only truly bond with one human, very loyal, can be friendly and obedient but only if trained properly, otherwise can have severe aggression issues.
- Wolverines known to attack its prey always with a ferocity, known as a glutton, with extreme aggression issues. Its an opportunist, that will jump on any creature or steal and scavenge anything it comes across, and has no fear taking on things larger than it.
- African Serval have a bizarre physique that actually make it one of the most successful hunters in the wild cat kingdom. Servals usually always hunt small creatures, both in land and water (preferring wetter habitats). They never scavenge or eat others leftovers. They are known as ambush predators.
- Golden Eagle is a famous creature in multiple countries, known to adapt in any kind of ecosystem. Golden eagles will only feed the strongest chick in a nest, the other will inevitably die. Its a true survival since birth, fierce animal. Its known as a cunning, nimble, and one of the fastest raptors in nature. Golden eagles are also known to take on larger prey than itself, such as wolves or coyotes, they represent power and fearlessness.

I have a partially mentally crafted ofmd daemon!au rattling around in my head based entirely on the concept of “how fucked up would it be if Blackbeard were actually a co-creation where Ed was the human face and Izzy’s daemon was the ‘intimidating brutal daemon’ befitting of Blackbeard” which comes with even more codependency issues and ideas about ownership and souls
#ofmd#ofmd daemon au#decided that in this au Izzy’s daemon is a massive black wolf#for that a) the gothic drama b) the lone wolf trope c) the Blackbeards dog jokes and d) bc that seems fittingly intimidating for a legend#her name is elisheva and she goes by el which is one letter shift away from Ed#and I’m not 100% on Ed’s daemon in this au yet#but im actually thinking ferret#for a) being a tiny predator b) crafty and mischievous and fun loving#c) often gets self into problems of own making d) small enough to hide decently easily and also isn’t very ‘captain-y’#and e) a pet who actually just wants to cuddle and be swung around like a sock full of rice#but also seriously very capable of biting your finger off#in my brain Ed’s daemon is named Elizabeth bc the type of person who would name a kid Edward would use that as a girl name#and ALSO the daemon can go by Lizzie which is a letter sound away from Izzy#Ed and El and Izzy and Lizzie#just bc I live for the drama

Because I am absolutely off my rocker, I've decided to throw together a daemon/his dark materiel/golden compass au for OFMD. Has this been done before? Probably. Here's my take on it :)

in the daemon au the legends about Blackbeard include him hurting his own daemon on purpose and his First Mate's daemon attacking people both of which are tragically ironic because Ed feels his daemon's pain even more acutely than most and Izzy's daemon avoids people even more than usual

For Stede's potential fuck-all big moth in the daemon AU I'm pondering... the White Witch:
This fucker lives all over South America and has like a 12" wingspan (which I find terrifying), and I do find something satisfying in the simplicity of the white combined with the striking patterns.
Alternatively, if I don't go huge there's the Elephant Hawk Moth (left) that's a little over 2" but very striking, and the Luna Moth (right) who's closer to 4.5".

Good Omens !Daemon Au
Crowley is (ofc) a Western Mud Snake
Aziraphale is an Albino Peacock
Gabriel is a Kangal Shepherd
Beelzebub is a HorseFly
- I chose a peacock for obvious flair for dramatics, fashion, sociable personality, and outgoing nature. But also bc peafowl are known to be obsessed with food and can get aggressive about their foods too.
- I chose Horsefly (partly for obvious reasons) as they are known to be a quick and aggressive species. Antisocial, and independent they don't have the same squadron or hierarchy the way ants and wasps do. They attack at their own leisure. They are known to have a sharp bite.
- I chose the Kangal Shepherd as its known as an aggressive protector of its livestock, territorial, but very obedient, highly intelligent, and loyal to its family. Its also known as an ancient breed of dog. Also its a bit of a fun play on words since its a shepherding dog (God and his angels shepherd lost sheep and all that).
- I chose Western Mud Snake bc of the coloration: the general easy-going nature, the inquisitiveness and the fact that this species is more likely to literally jab you with their tail when being bothered, to get you to leave them alone then strike. They also have a legend of grabbing their tails and rolling after ppl, kinda like a car wheel.
