Thank Your Lucky Stars
youtube

During World War II, most of the major studios produced all-star musicals, usually built around some kind of benefit performance, to raise money for the war effort. David Butler’s THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS (1943, TCM) was the first of two such films Warner Bros. made to support the Hollywood Canteen, which is natural as it was founded by two of their biggest stars, Bette Davis and John Garfield.  Early on, aspiring composer Joan Leslie says of a makeshift community of show-biz hopefuls, “It’s either very quaint or very corny.” I wasn’t feeling well last night, so I leaned toward the former as a cure for what ailed me. The plot is negligible. Producer Edward Everett Horton and composer S.Z. Sakall want to do a benefit with Dinah Shore, but since she works for Eddie Cantor, they can’t find a way to get her without letting him take over the show. Meanwhile, aspiring singer Dennis Morgan tries to get into the show with help from Leslie and an actor who can’t get work because he looks too much like Cantor. Yes, it’s Cantor in a double role, though the joke is that Cantor as Cantor plays a nightmarish egomaniac while his double is more like Cantor’s real image. Arthur Schwartz and Frank Loesser wrote some catchy upbeat songs — including the title number, impeccably sung by Shore, and Davis’ “They’re Either Too Young or Too Old” — and some soupy ballads. Part of the film’s charm is seeing performers not noted for musical skills sing and dance, with special honors to Garfield for doing a version of “Blues in the Night” that spoofs his screen image. Choreographer Leroy Prinze deserves a lot of credit for coming up with a dancing style to suit Errol Flynn’s image, throwing Davis into a jitterbug number, turning Olivia de Havilland (dubbed) and Ida Lupino into bobbysoxers and staging a bang-up number headed by Hattie McDaniel, who should have done more musicals. Watch closely and you’ll catch Ruth Donnelly as a surgical nurse, Henry Armetta as a barber, Frank Faylen as a sailor, Mike Mazurki as Cantor’s trainer, Mary Treen as an autograph hound and Butler and producer Mark Hellinger as themselves. As icing on the cake, you get to see Spike Jones and his City Slickers do “Otchi Chornya.”

In This Our Life (John Huston, 1942) Cast: Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, George Brent, Dennis Morgan, Charles Coburn, Frank Craven, Billie Burke, Ernest Anderson, Hattie McDaniel, Lee Patrick, Mary Servoss. Screenplay: Howard Koch, based on a novel by Ellen Glasgow. Cinematography: Ernest Haller. Art direction: Robert M. Haas. Film editing: William Holmes. Music: Max Steiner. Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland play sisters named Stanley and Roy, which should be enough to suggest what sort of movie In This Our Life is. And yes, it's a good sister (de Havilland/Roy) versus bad sister (Davis/Stanley) plot, with George Brent and Dennis Morgan as the men in the middle. As the movie starts, Stanley is on the brink of marrying Craig (Brent) but instead runs off with Roy's husband, Peter (Morgan), after which Roy gets divorced and falls in love with Craig, but Stanley's marriage to Peter goes sour and he commits suicide. So then she sets her eye on Craig again, and so on, accompanied by an almost nonstop score by Max Steiner to make sure you're feeling what you're supposed to feel. But this adaptation of a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Ellen Glasgow wants to be more. The crux of the plot hangs on Stanley's attempt to frame a young black man named Parry (Ernest Anderson) for a hit-and-run accident that she committed. Unfortunately, the sensitivity of Hollywood studios about offending Southern audiences waters down this part of the narrative, even though Anderson has a good scene in which Parry despairs of receiving justice. Censorship also weakens the incest motif in Stanley's relationship with her uncle William (Charles Coburn), which was stronger and clearer in Glasgow's novel. Davis didn't want the role of the bad sister, and made things difficult for director John Huston (and for uncredited director Raoul Walsh, who filled in after Pearl Harbor when Huston was called into service as a documentarian/propagandist for the Department of War). The result is some of Davis's more flamboyantly mannered acting. De Havilland, however, gives a solid performance as the tough and thoughtful Roy. It would have been a more entertaining movie if it had had the courage to be trashier and less tepidly social-conscious.

you had a crush on me? ও a. beard
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: angela beard x reader
summary: you never knew a certain defender had a crush on you this whole time, the feelings were reciprocated. aussie!reader, wolfsburg!reader
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ⋆✦⋆ ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
you looked at caitlin, who gave you a knowing look. she knew about your long time crush on your former teammate. it was the way you’d talk about her with the youngsters of the team, kyra and charli. you’d also talk with courtney from time to time, catching up about life and how you’ve been adjusting at wolfsburg.
“stop staring at your girlfriend.” caitlin teased, as you playfully shoved her back, she ended up bumping into alanna who looked at her in amusement.
“stop teasing your sister, we need our wonder girl for this match.” alanna said, as caitlin sighed. you teased her as she couldn’t retaliate in the presence of alanna.
macca, the team’s goalkeeper just laughed at the two of you. the foord siblings were always fun to watch. you were both a threat on the pitch, she was the right winger, you were the left winger.
but you often played as a center defensive midfielder or a full back. you had only played as the left wing, if you wanted to change the game and it certainly was an impact.
you made you international debut at the age of 14, playing a few friendlies before being part of the world cup selection squad in 2015.
“it looks like the games about the start.” you hummed, before grabbing the captain’s armband. usually steph or sam is the captain, however since it’s your 100th cap they decided for you to captain the team.
caitlin looked at you before you handed her the armband she helped you wear it as it was placed around your left bicep before she gave you a tap on the back.
“try not to get distracted out there, it is the qualifying games for the olympics.” caitlin teased, as you scoffed before giving a light shrug.
you might have a crush on defender, but things were always competitive between you two. who could score the most goals? you did actually, since defenders had less chances of scoring one.
who had the most assists? angie did, she would send crosses to her teammates. who covered the most distance? it was actually a tie.
you exited the locker room, alanna and cailtin were behind you. macca was already in line chuckling how you three were the last ones of the team to line up.
you locked eyes with angie as she gave you a soft look. you had returned it with a soft smile as you heard caitlin snickering at your behavior. you just glared at her behavior, before taking your place in front of macca who hummed at your late arrival.
“late, little foord.” macca teased, as you gave her a hum.
“blame it on caitlin.” you joked, as your face turned a little bit serious, the referee along with the lineswoman started to walk on the pitch. you grabbed your mascot’s hand, giving her a soft smile as both teams started to walk out.
as usual, the national anthems were sang. you tugged at your hoodie, swiftly pulling it off giving it to the kit man.
“let’s show them what we’re made of.” steph said, as you hummed quickly joining the starting eleven picture.
the banner was presented in the front before it was passed to you. you went to where the ref was, giving her a small smile waiting for the other team’s captain to appear.
you swapped banners before shaking hands with each lines-woman, before heading to the midfield. in the first half, both teams weren’t able to score. despite your team having more possession, and a few shots on target it wasn’t enough to score a point.
as the half break whistle blew, you looked at angie you had her eyebrows raised. alanna being the closest hummed, before tugging you along. she didn’t want you getting distracted, neither did caitlin.
but the game had quickly changed, as steph sent a cross from the backline. you quickly got a tap on the ball, before doing a risky move sending it to the top right corner.
you watched as olivia mcdaniel dived, but it wasn’t enough to fully block the ball. just a little graze from the tip of her fingers, the ball had hit the net.
you did your iconic pose, jumping into the air before doing a small dance. caitlin had ruffled your hair, as you chuckled. it was always something she did.
the game continued and in the 67th minute, you watched as angie sent a cross to sarina, one of their forwards as she went for a header.
it managed to slip past macca, as you watched the ball hit the back of the net. it was interesting, you hummed knowing that the future is very bright for football in the philippines.
sarina ran towards angie as she celebrated, giving her a fist bump as you laughed. you looked at caitlin who wiggled her eyebrows as you flipped her off.
she gave you an offended look, as you returned to your position not knowing how angie looked at you. both teams were eager to end this equalizer, and they did.
and that’s exactly what the team did. in the last minute of additional time, sam had kicked the ball sending it to the bottom left corner.
the whistle blew with australia winning the match, you watch as the bench ran onto the field celebrating with the rest.
“n/n.” caitlin said, tossing you a bottle of electrolytes. you caught it as you headed to where angie was, not paying attention to their topic.
“well, we lost against your crush.” her teammate teased, as her eyes widened realizing that you were just a step behind her.
“oh, so you have a crush on me?” you teased, as angie froze but quickly turned around, sending the both of you to the floor.
the trio looked at the two of you in amusement, caitlin was grinning. as the other two just looked at each other, knowing how caitlin would have a field day over this.
“maybe, foord.” you heard her whisper underneath her breath, as you hummed.

#5 Bears End NCAA's in 7th Place
Tatematsu, Fouillet Earn Top-20 Finishes
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Playing through windy conditions on the final day of the NCAA Regional, the California women's golf team moved up the leaderboard for the second straight round, ending in seventh place with a pair of top-20 individual finishes.
Senior Rina Tatematsu (73-74-71 – 218) made the Golden Bears' biggest climb of the day, jumping up 12 spots to earn a team-best 13th-place finish. She was one of just three golfers to shoot under par on Wednesday at Spanish Trail Country Club, tying for the round's second-lowest score with a 1-under-par 71. Tatematsu had a team-best five birdies on the day, while her 2-under tournament total on par 3s led the entire field.
Constance Fouillet (76-68-76 – 220) finished 4-over both for the day and the tournament, ending her first NCAA Regional in 18th place. She caps her stellar debut season with a 72.7 scoring average, breaking the program's previous freshman scoring record of 73.6 set by Katherine Zhu in 2018-19.
After missing the first round due to illness, sophomore Adora Liu (70-73) bounced back to post the team's second-lowest score in two straight rounds. Her 1-over 73 in round three was good for the seventh-best individual score.
Senior Cristina Ochoa (75-77-75 – 227) closed out her final regional in 41st place with a 3-over 75 and sophomore Olivia Lee (80-76-77 – 233) carded a 5-over 77.
Despite starting the day 11 strokes out of fifth place, the Bears remained confident knowing that they had saved their best score for the last round in seven of their previous eight tournaments. They finished six strokes shy of matching fifth-place Florida State (+14), which advanced to the NCAA Championships alongside UCLA (+12), Baylor (+8), Purdue (+4) and first-place Arkansas (E).
This was also the 23rd and final regional for Nancy McDaniel, who has served as Cal's founding head coach for the past 29 seasons. McDaniel – who recently announced that she will be retiring following the season – leaves behind an immense legacy that includes two Pac-10/12 and West Regional Coach of the Year awards, two Pac-10 championships, five top-five showings at NCAA Regionals, one NCAA Regional win, and three top-five finishes at the NCAA Championships.
"It's a unique day. You don't ever get this day until today, so you can't practice it," McDaniel said. "When you're in regionals, you're just thinking about regionals. But when you have former players texting you, and you see some really special alums show up in person, you understand the relationships that you've created together and the impact they've had on you. That's what it's all about."
In McDaniel's final season at the helm, the Bears tied or broke six program records, most of which were achieved during a blistering stretch in the fall when they won three straight competitions for the first time ever.
Since setting four program records at the Molly Invitational in September, the Bears have continued to make this a season to remember. They defeated No. 1 Stanford 4-3 in the Big Match and came from behind to win the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in October, sealing the program's run of victories. To just miss the championships by six strokes and place 7th out of 72 teams is a respectable accomplishment by any measure.
"I'm competitive. Cal is competitive. This is another step in the direction that we're striving towards," McDaniel said. "We know where we want to be. I'm going to support, help, and be in the background to see Cal golf go to that next level. I want them to have that."
