The royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton ♡
The wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton took place on Friday, 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London, England. One million people lined the route between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace and the ceremony was viewed live by 162 million people worldwide, with a total of 36.7 million watchers in the United Kingdom alone.
The bride wore a dress designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. The gown was made of ivory satin and featured an overlaid long-sleeved V-neck lace bodice and appliquéd full skirt with box pleats, as well as a nine-foot train. The motifs in the lace included roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks to represent England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Catherine wore the Cartier Halo Tiara, lent to her by the Queen, as well as custom-made diamond earrings given to her by her parents (the piece features oak leaves similar to the scrolls of the Cartier Halo Tiara and an acorn, in reference to the Middleton's coat of arms). The bride's bouquet contained myrtle, lily of the valley, ivy, hyacinth and sweet William.
The groom wore an Irish Guards mounted officer's uniform in Guard of Honour Order with a forage cap, as well as the star of the Order of the Garter, his RAF wings and Golden Jubilee Medal.
On the morning of the wedding, it was announced that William was to be created Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus, with Catherine becoming Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge after the wedding.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, GCVO, GCStJ, CD (born Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones, 20 January 1965)
20 January 2024
Today is a special day in the calendar of the British royal family as Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, celebrates her 59th birthday.
The Duchess of Edinburgh has earned herself many loyal watchers over the years as she has attended charity events, made visits to organisations that matter to her, and been spotted at historic royal events.
Prince Edward's wife has worn some supremely elegant looks over the years.
We are sure that as she enters her 59th year and her first full years as the Duchess of Edinburgh, she will continue to pull out the stops in all the public outings to come.
A Regal Vision
Tumblr media
The state visit of the president of the Republic Of Korea in 2023 was a momentous occasion.
The Duchess did not disappoint, in fact, she stunned in a glorious white Suzannah London dress.
The elegant gown featured a sheer embroidered panel on the shoulders and up the neck for an ethereal touch.
It also had long sleeves that were cuffed at the wrist. The royal styled the piece with the breathtaking aquamarine tiara and a modest silver clutch.
A Barbie Moment
Tumblr media
In June 2022, the then-Countess of Wessex stunned in a block colour moment next to her sister-in-law, the then-Duchess of Cambridge.
The royal ladies attended the Order of The Garter service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, where Sophie stunned in a bubblegum pink A-line dress with long fluted sleeves and a rounded neck.
She paired the knee-length piece with a pair of nude heels, a beige floral and feathered fascinator, and a beige croc-print clutch.
Festive Blues
Tumblr media
The Duchess attended the Christmas Day church service at Church of St Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham estate in 2018.
She pulled out one of her numerous fabulous dress coats. Sophie rocked the cornflower blue belted piece with a pair of navy tights, black platform heels, and a pair of chic black leather gloves.
Peeking out from the top of the coat was a blue and black ditsy floral printed dress with a ruffled neckline. Her black netted fascinator completed the look.
A Bronzey Moment
Tumblr media
In 2021, Sophie once again embraced blue but in a totally different way.
The royal was seen arriving at the biennial Rifles Awards Dinner at the City of London Guildhall wearing a stunning aquamarine floor-length evening dress with a square neckline and cinched waistline.
The bronzed Duchess teamed the dress with a glitzy clutch in blue and black sequins and flesh-coloured shiny pointed-toe heels.
The perfect finishing touches were added in the form of a diamond-encrusted brooch and coordinating drop earrings that were shown off by her hair being styled in an elegant updo.
The Picture-Perfect Wedding Guest
Tumblr media
In 2021, Sophie was photographed alongside her husband, the then-Earl of Wessex, at the wedding of Flora Ogilvy, granddaughter of Princess Alexandra, to Timothy Vesterberg, at St James's Church in Piccadilly, London.
The Duchess looked stunning in a rosy pink shin-length A-line dress, which featured cinching around the neck and on the cut-off sleeves.
She coordinated the pink dress with a cream clutch adorned with pink raffia flowers, a pair of cream patent heels with a buckle around the ankle, and the pièce de résistance was a cream lace fascinator with a corsage detail.
Trendy Taupe
Tumblr media
The Duchess is known for getting out her best looks when she attends a special wedding.
In 2011, she was seen with her husband Prince Edward leaving the Hotel de Paris to attend the religious ceremony of the royal wedding of Prince Albert II of Monaco to Charlene Wittstock in Monaco.
The royal opted for a taupe aesthetic that with the 90s fashion revival we have seen over the last year and the wearing of trendy browns is a look that would go down well today.
The then-46-year-old Sophie paired the taupe piece with a cowl neckline with a coordinating feathered fascinator, ruched clutch, and peep-toe heels.
A Classic LBD
Tumblr media
In 2014, Sophie switched it up entirely and opted for a classic little black dress that exuded glamour.
The royal was pictured alongside Strictly host Tess Daly at the star-studded St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes celebration of the nation's life savers at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in 2014.
The Duchess's floor-length gown had a diamanté-encrusted halterneck and she swept her hair over to one side for an effortless look.

So Edo & Meghan attended the Christmas walk as fiancés but not Kate? This is why I say that the Queen doesn’t appreciate Kate as she should
Hi, According to Katie Nicholl’s book, Catherine was invited to Sandringham for Christmas in 2006 but she declined in order to spend time with her own family and because Kate&William had their own plans for the holidays. (Please note that Nicholl isn’t the most reliable source)
https://www.ibtimes.com/why-queen-elizabeth-advised-prince-william-cancel-kate-middletons-romantic-christmas-2885551
Catherine was also invited to Sandringham in 2010 but she chose to spend time with her family instead.
I understand what you mean and I’ve felt like Catherine was not as appreciated as she should be but when we look at the facts, that’s not the case.
•PRE-ENGAGEMENT
Between 2004 and 2010, Catherine was invited to many events where the royal family was present: holidays trips, numerous weddings (Laura Lopes, Peter and Autumn to name a few), polo games, stays at Balmoral, charity events, graduations, races...
2004: She went skiing in Switzerland with the royal family. It’s on this very trip that the world learned about Kate & Wills relationship. Kate would often go on ski trips with the royals in Klosters over the years.
Tumblr media
2006: She was Wills +1 at his Sandhurst graduation day. The Middleton clan was invited too! K&W looked very smitten and remember when she said that Will looked sexy in his uniform? I feel you girl 🤤😩 Her présence there shows K&W’s relationship was serious and that the family had already let her into their fold because they genuinely like her!
Tumblr media
2008: RAF WINGS. William received his wings from his father at a graduation ceremony at RAF Cranwell. He only had eyes for Kate 😍 Reports said Charles was very pleased to have Kate here and that he liked her a lot!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2008: Order of the Garter. That was when Will was invested into the Order of the Garter. Kate’s appearance at the event was taken as one the most significant signals that she would soon become a full-time member of the RF and was proof of the trust the family already had in her!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(+bonus: Back when Harry wasn’t a little bitch -or less of a little bitch)
2010: RAF Graduation. Catherine cheered for William as he graduated from his Royal Air Force helicopter course with flying colours (lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
POST-WEDDING
2011: Wedding note: Need I even say more?
NOW KNOW YE that We have consented and do by these Presents signify Our Consent to the contracting of Matrimony between Our Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales K.G. and Our Trusty and Well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.
Tumblr media
• Access to family bling : Kate has been loaned major pieces of jewelry from Lilibet’s vaults: the Nizam 😍, the Lovers knot tiara, the Lotus Flower tiara (first tiara Kate wore after her wedding and what a honour it was since for many royal brides the wedding tiara loaned from the Queen is their go-to tiara for years), the diamond collet necklace to name a few but Kate’s also been loaned jewels that have significant emotional value to the Queen like her wedding bracelet (a bracelet made from a tiara that belonged to Princess Alice of Battenburg that Phillip broke apart and rearranged).
•Major patronages from the Queen and Philip
•Major outings with the Queen and Philip
•Orders : RFO + GCVO! And might I add Catherine is the first grand-daughter in law to have received such a high honour in like forever!
Tumblr media
To sum up, the RF love Catherine, that’s undeniable and they appreciate and respect her work! Yes, sometimes Kate’s called to fix the mess, to make peace within the family and that might anger us but this is part of her work and from what we know of her it is also one of her wonderful personality traits.

Why Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Kate Middleton Weren't at the Order of the Garter Service
New Post has been published on https://harryandmeghan.xyz/why-prince-harry-meghan-markle-and-kate-middleton-werent-at-the-order-of-the-garter-service/
Why Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Kate Middleton Weren't at the Order of the Garter Service
Tumblr media
The Queen was accompanied by several royal family members as she led celebrations at the annual Order of the Garter ceremony honoring knights for their public service on Monday. Most notably, she was joined by Order members Prince Charles and Prince William, who donned traditional blue velvet robes and ornate plumed hats to process through the grounds of Windsor Castle, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex married just last month.

But the newlyweds were notably absent from the day’s festivities, as Prince Harry does not belong to the Order, and Meghan Markle won’t attend until he is named a member.

“The Duke of Sussex is not a Knight of the Garter and will probably not be invested until his father is King,” Marlene Koenig, a British and European royalty expert, explains to BAZAAR.com. “The Duchess of Sussex has never attended and will probably not attend until Harry is named.”
William was named a Knight of the Garter in 2008 as the 1,000th knight, according to Koenig, but he is second in line to the throne and that is “one reason why the Queen named him, despite being [so] young.” The Duke of York and Earl of Wessex were not named until 2006, when they were in their 40s.

Kate Middleton also skipped out on the event because she has technically been on maternity leave since giving birth to Prince Louis on April 23.
“The Duchess of Cambridge has attended nearly every Garter ceremony since 2011,” says Koenig. “She, as Catherine Middleton, and Harry were present in 2008 at William’s first appearance as a Knight of the Garter.”

Last year’s Garter Day was cancelled, as it fell on the same day that Parliament was set to re-open. However, in 2016, Kate attended the annual celebration as a spectator.

The grand tradition of Garter Day dates back to medieval times. King Edward III was “so inspired” by the heroic tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, he set up his own group of heroes in 1348, calling them the Order of the Garter.
Today, the “oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain,” as described by Kensington Palace, is open to both men and women who are chosen from “a variety of backgrounds, in recognition for their public service.”

The Queen is called the “Sovereign of the Garter” and is personally in charge of choosing members, which includes knights who “have held public office, who have contributed in a particular way to national life or who have served the Sovereign personally,” according to the Kensington Palace. Current members include Princes William, Charles, Andrew, and Edward, and Princess Anne, among other knights.
Past members have included Marshal of the RAF Lord Stirrup, and former Prime Ministers Sir John Major and Sir Winston Churchill.
On Garter Day, the Queen and her knights process in grand ceremonial garb at Windsor Castle. It is one of the most traditional events on the Queen’s calendar, according to the Palace. Koenig says it’s “normal” for only the royals who are Order members, and their spouses, to attend the celebration.

30 FASCINATING WEDDING FACTS!
Tumblr media
1. In 1878, the New York Times ran its first wedding announcement for a black couple: Senator Blanche Kelso Bruce, the first black American to serve in the Senate, and Josephine Willson.
2. Speaking of law and order, in 2000, 120 inmates at Carandiru prison in San Paulo, Brazil married their fiancees, setting the Guinness world record for the largest wedding in a prison.
3. The longest-married couple on record is Herbert Fisher and Zelmyra Fisher. They were married for 86 years, 9 months, and 16 days, until the bride passed away in 2011. Their marriage advice? “Remember marriage is not a contest — never keep a score. God has put the two of you together on the same team to win.”
4. The phrase “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe” symbolizes continuity, optimism for the future, borrowed happiness, fidelity, and wealth or good luck, respectively.
5. Because white is the color of mourning in Eastern cultures, white wedding dresses are uncommon.
6. Las Vegas is the top wedding destination with over 100,000 weddings a year, followed by Hawaii at 25,000 weddings a year.
7. Early Roman brides carried a bunch of herbs, such as garlic and rosemary, under their veils to symbolize fidelity and fertility and to ward off evil. These herbs served as a precursor to the modern bridal bouquet.
8. Wedding rings are often placed on the third finger of the left hand because ancient Egyptians believed the vein in that hand (which the Romans called the “vein of love”) ran directly to the heart.
9. Flower girls traditionally threw flower petals in the bride’s path to lead her to a sweet, plentiful future.
10. Guests in ancient times would tear off part of the bride’s gown as tokens of good luck, leading to the tradition of the bride throwing both her garter and her bouquet.
11. The phrase “tying the knot” initially came from an ancient Babylonian custom in which threads from the clothes of both the bride and bridegroom were tied in a knot to symbolize the couple’s union. Literally tying some type of ceremonial knot at a wedding ceremony can be found across cultures.
12. A wedding cake is traditionally a symbol of good luck and fertility and has been a part of wedding celebrations since Roman times, when a small bun, symbolizing fertility, was broken above the bride’s head at the close of the ceremony. During the Middle Ages, custom required the bride and groom to kiss over small cakes.
13. Pope Innocent III (1160/1-1216) declared that a waiting period should be observed between betrothal and marriage, which led to separate engagement and wedding rings. The first recorded account of a diamond engagement ring was in 1477 when King Maximilian I of Germany (1459-1519) proposed to Mary of Burgundy (1457-1482) and offered her a diamond to seal his vow.
14. Throwing rice at weddings symbolizes fertility, prosperity, and bounty. In some countries, the bride might even carry or wear sheaves of grain. However, some modern churches and wedding locations discourage rice throwing because of the pervasive, yet mistaken, belief that rice can be fatal for birds who eat it. 15. To ensure fertility, the Irish would take a hen that was about to lay an egg and tie it to the wedding bed.
16. Oriental wedding dresses often display embroidered cranes, which are symbols of life-long fidelity. At Japanese weddings, the presence of 1001 white paper origami cranes is considered good luck.
17. In Europe during the Middle Ages, the lord of the manor had a legal right to spend the first night with any non-noble bride on his land (“le droit du seigneur” or “right of the lord”).
18. In Ethiopia, women from certain tribes, place plates in their lower lip in order to entice a rich groom. The larger the protruding lip, the more a groom will pay.
19. Some scholars claim the word “honeymoon” comes from the Teutonic custom when newlyweds would hide out and drink hydromel (a fermented honey and water mixture) for 30 days until the moon waned.
20. More than 40% of couples now plan their weddings together, and three out of four grooms help select items for their wedding gift registries.
21. The superstition that the bridegroom must not see his bride before the wedding stems from the days when marriages were arranged and the groom might never have seen the bride. There was the chance that if he saw her, he might bolt. Other sources say that to see the bride in her dress is peering into the future, which can bring bad luck.
22. Queen Victoria’s wedding cake was three yards wide and weighed 300 pounds.
23. Queen Elizabeth II had 12 wedding cakes. The one she cut at her wedding was nine feet tall and weighed 500 pounds.
24. Wedding bells are an important symbol of a wedding. Traditionally, it was believed that demons were scared off by loud sounds, so following a wedding ceremony, anything that could make noise was used to create a diversion.
25. The bachelor or stag party supposedly started in fifth-century Sparta where military compatriots would feast and toast one another on the eve of a wedding, like warriors going to battle.
26. Before the 1500s, couples in Europe were free to marry themselves. It wasn’t until 1564 when the Council of Trent declared marriage was a sacrament that weddings became the province of priests and churches.
27. In the United States, June is the most popular month for weddings, followed by August.
28. Nearly $72 billion is spent on weddings every year in the United States.
29. Before the church declared marriage a sacrament, couples often sought sacred places in nature to wed, such as a hilltop or cliff, where the earth supposedly meets heaven.
30. In England, before literacy rates were high, invitations to weddings were shouted out by “bidders,” who were old men hired to announced the details of the wedding.

Royal Wedding: Lip reader reveals Queen's advice to Prince Philip
New Post has been published on https://www.hsnews.us/royal-wedding-lip-reader-reveals-queens-advice-to-prince-philip/
Royal Wedding: Lip reader reveals Queen's advice to Prince Philip
Meghan couldn’t stop saying ‘Wow!’ and the words ‘amazing’ and ‘unbelievable’ were used on several occasions, reveals expert lip reader Terry Ruane ,who was watching TV footage of the proceedings. Here are some of the comments he observed being made…
As guests arrive…
A woman with Tom Parker Bowles is on her phone, saying: ‘I am not hungover today, so that’s really good.’
George Clooney greets James Corden, telling him: ‘You look great!’ Meanwhile, Amal Clooney is very chatty, variously saying: ‘Oh, how sweet’ and ‘How annoying’ – but it’s not clear what she’s referring to.
Harry’s uncle, Earl Spencer, chats with his wife about a friend who works in Africa.
Actor Idris Elba jokes about the venue, saying: ‘It’s not bad!’
As William and Harry walk towards the chapel, William indicates that either his shoes or trousers are ‘tight’.
Harry prompted Meghan before the newly-wedded couple shared a kiss on the chapel’s steps
In the chapel…
Princess Beatrice looks around, asking her father, Prince Andrew: ‘Where’s Mum?’, referring to Sarah, Duchess of York, who is seated diagonally across from them on the other side of the aisle.
The heavily pregnant Zara Tindall, daughter of Princess Anne, tells her husband Mike she ‘needs the toilet’.
David Furnish, husband of Sir Elton John, comments on weddings, saying: ‘That’s the greatest thing about weddings, they’re supposed to be (beautiful?) but you have to…’ before the camera cuts away.
Harry nervously asks William: ‘Is she here?’ William replies ‘No, not yet. I don’t know actually.’ William then suggests they ought to stand up when Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, comes into the chapel. Harry quips that he wants to see Meghan and her dress ‘before my hair goes grey’.
At the altar…
As Prince Charles hands Meghan to Harry, the groom replies: ‘Thank you, Pa.’
Standing side by side, Harry and Meghan gaze at each other and the prince says: ‘You look amazing. I missed you.’
Harry checks she is OK as he lifts her veil over her head, asking: ‘All right?’
During the service…
At one point the Duchess of Cornwall appears to get lost in the order of service book, seeking help from the Duchess of Cambridge, who replies: ‘I don’t know.’
Leaving the chapel…
At the top of the steps, Meghan asks Harry: ‘Do we kiss?’ Harry replies with a discreet ‘Yeah’. The Queen tells Prince Philip: ‘Keep waving.’
Meghan’s mother turns to Charles and describes the service as ‘superb’.
Meghan appears to be overwhelmed by the size of the crowd, saying: ‘Wow! How busy! Unbelievable.’ Awed by the whole experience, she repeats the word ‘wow’.
At the end of the carriage ride, Meghan says: ‘So much FUN!’, putting her hand to her chest.
Finally, as the couple pass the last of the cheering crowds and into the private royal gardens, Harry says: ‘I’m ready for a drink now.’
Princes Harry and William joked about Harry’s ‘tight trousers’ while they waited for the bride
Lipreaders have revealed Harry told his bride: ‘You look amazing – I missed you’ at the altar
The royal bride replied ‘thank you’ before the couple said their wedding vows
Harry was meanwhile spotted telling his new wife he was ready for the reception as their carriage drew back into the grounds of Windsor Castle.
As the horse-drawn carriage finished its climb up the Long Walk, Harry quipped: ‘I’m ready for a drink now.’
Meghan was obviously impressed by the crowds who had lined the streets, exclaiming ‘wow!’ as they emerged from the castle grounds.
They also swapped remarks about some of the signs being held by members of the public, with Harry commenting ‘huge’ at one point during the procession, and Meghan saying ‘how sweet’.
Lip-readers have also revealed how the groom was supported by his brother ahead of the ceremony.
Harry, 33, said ‘I’m alright’ in a heart-warming exchange with his brother, 35, as they entered the church, but joked ‘my trousers are too tight’ as he complained his military uniform was on the small side.
As they waited for the bridge to arrive, a nervous Harry asked his brother: ‘Is she here?’ Wills replied: ‘No not yet. I don’t know actually.’
The royal couple exchanged a few tender words with each other as the wedding service began
Meghan then arrived and, after entering the church with her flower girls and page boys, was walked up the aisle by Prince Charles, who stepped in at the last minute.
Harry said: ‘Thanks Pa’, as Charles and Meghan arrived at the altar.
Meanwhile, a body language expert said Meghan ‘was the strength’ of her wedding ceremony and was constantly reassuring her new husband.
Despite the whole experience being completely new for Meghan, who today became the Duchess of Sussex, she did not display a single sign of anxiety or nervousness, body language expert Judi James said.
Ms James said Harry performed about 12 ‘nervous’ self-touching body checks, like pulling at his gloves and wringing his hands, within a few paces of getting out his car after arriving at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.
However Meghan, the latest member of the royal family, maintained complete calm throughout the ceremony to ‘help Harry through it’.
Harry was also spotted telling his wife: ‘I’m ready for a drink’ as they entered the gates of Windsor Castle after their carriage procession
Ms James said: ‘Meghan was amazing. Walking up the aisle by herself, I looked for every smallest sign of suppressed anxiety and nervousness – there was absolutely nothing.
‘I think she probably saw it as her role to help Harry through it rather than the other way round. She sat with her hand over his for quite a bit of the service as though she was reassuring him.
‘To me, she was the strength when it came to the day and the actual performance.’
Both Princes wore the black and gold uniforms of the Blues and Royals, similar to Harry’s outfit for Wills’ wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011.
The uniforms they wore were tailored at Dege & Skinner on Savile Row, with the Queen giving them permission to wear their Army uniforms to the ceremony.
Harry has decided to sport a beard, despite speculation he would shave it off in line with Army rules that ban facial hair.
Prince Harry (left) arrived at his wedding to Meghan Markle with his brother and best man Prince William (right) to rapturous applause in Windsor this morning
But as the prince is no longer a serving member of the forces, he is allowed to break with convention.
As Harry’s best man, Prince William will be responsible for handing over the rings, which were earlier revealed to be the work of Cleave and Company.
Harry is returning the favour to his younger brother after acting as his best man seven years ago.
Prince Harry will become the second Duke of Sussex when he and Meghan have walked down the aisle, with his new wife becoming the first ever Duchess of the county in History.
Harry’s frockcoat is made from blue doeskin. It is single-breasted in style with a stand-up collar, complete with figured braiding of Regimental pattern.
The brothers walked by crowds outside the chapel as they both prepared for the ceremony
The uniform was cut and made by hand. The sleeve pattern is intricate in detail and took one person one week to complete.
The frockcoat is ranked to Major with large gold embroidered crowns.
The badge on the left chest is Pilots’ Wings attained whilst serving with the Army Air Corps for flying Apache helicopters.
The four medal ribbons below the Wings are, from left to right: K.C.V.O., Afghanistan with rosette, The Queen’s Golden Jubilee and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The trousers, officially called ‘overalls’, are made from a blue and black wool barathea and are fastened by a leather strap and buckle underneath the boot.
Both Princes (Harry left and Harry and William right) wore the black and gold uniforms of the Blues and Royals to the wedding in Windsor today
The groom was pictured beaming with his brother and best man ahead of the ceremony
What did Harry and William wear?
Both Prince Harry and Prince William wore the frockcoat uniform of the Blues and Royals, part of the Household Cavalry of the British Army.
Her Majesty The Queen gave her permission for Prince Harry to get married in his uniform. They were both made by Dege & Skinner on Savile Row.

Prince Harry's big day is here!
The 33-year-old Prince of Wales, who is set to marry Meghan Markle, was all smiles as he arrived to St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in England, on Saturday. Harry happily waved to the hundreds of people who gathered around the castle to celebrate the royal couple's joyous wedding day.
The red-headed groom wore a black military uniform.  He walked alongside his brother and best man, Prince William, who looked just as regal in his own black uniform. For special occasions and wedding, it is customary for members of the British monarchy to wear their ceremonial uniforms.

SPANISH STATE VISIT CONFIRMED FOR UK
The British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, has welcomed the announcement of a State Visit to the United Kingdom from the 6th to the 8th of June 2017.
“In this Sapphire Jubilee celebration year for Her Majesty the Queen, I am delighted that that Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain have accepted her invitation to visit the UK” said Mr Manley.
“This State Visit will celebrate not only the long and deep royal and historic ties between our two countries, but also our strong relationship as partners bilaterally, within Europe and on the global stage.  We enjoy close connections in terms of culture, commerce, education, science and innovation. This is an opportunity to celebrate and deepen those links.”
The Ambassador was speaking from Santander, where he is touring the north of Spain to promote education, tourism and investment in the UK.
Today, the United Kingdom and Spain are close partners in NATO and United Nations, among numerous international organisations. We also continue to cooperate in the European Union, and once we leave the EU we want to strengthen our strong and constructive bilateral relationship with Spain.
The two countries are also major partners in trade, with 40bn GBP of trade in 2015, including British goods and services worth almost 15bn GBP exported to Spain, and imports from Spain to the UK worth 25bn GBP.
Nearly 300,000 Britons are registered as residents in Spain and 18 million visitors came from the UK last year, whilst more than 132,000 Spaniards are resident in the UK and two million visited in 2015.
On top of that, we share close educational connections, with nearly 11,000 Spanish students studying at UK universities and 50,000 students attending British schools in Spain.
This is the first State Visit by King Felipe and Queen Letizia to the UK and they will stay at Buckingham Palace. The programme will be announced in due course.
The last State Visit was when King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia visited in 1986.  HM Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh returned with a State Visit to Spain in 1988.
Since then the Spanish and British royal families have paid a number of formal visits to each other’s countries. In 2002, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia attended the annual Order of the Garter Ceremony at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, including a dinner at Windsor Castle given by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.
In 2011, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall paid a three-day official visit to Spain that was hosted by Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia. A few weeks later Queen Sofia, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia attended the wedding in London of Prince William to Catherine Middleton.
The British and Spanish Royal Families are directly related through the marriage of Alfonso XIII of Spain to Princess Victoria Eugenia, known as Ena, granddaughter of Queen Victoria, in 1906. Victoria Eugenia is the great-grandmother of King Felipe.
