The Howling
Tumblr media
I had a print to drop off to the Goldsborough team and as the weather was in the mood to enforce a mass cancellation of games...it turned out that one of the few fixtures to survive was the top of the table Theakston Nidderdale Division One game at Ouseburn Cricket Club - their opponents...Goldsborough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ouseburn was, at one point, one of the nearest cricket clubs to where I lived in Whixley, and one that I would visit on a regular basis. Thinking back...that is probably about ten years ago, but I have certainly revisited this club once or twice a season since I moved.
The weather on the day didn't look good...in fact, it looked set to throw it down at a moment's notice. I got to the ground, looked towards the horizon and eyed the rather ominous smudgy clouds in the distance.
It wasn't long before the umpires joined my gaze...but right at that moment the covers were being wheeled to the side of the boundary ropes...and it was dry.

Ouseburn picked up the bat and Goldsborough took to the field...but it wasn't long before the wind picked up and water drops fell from the dark grey sky.
As you can probably tell from the photos, the ground has quite a camber, allowing for differing views of play to be obtained, depending on where you sit or stand.
As the light drizzle started, the scorers packed up their computers and headed inside and I wandered around to find cover under the trees overhanging one corner of the ground.
It did the trick nicely...as the drizzle got a little heavier...I kept nice and dry. However, in not getting soaked with rain, I got covered in tiny spiders that seemed to live there!
Play continued as the wind picked up, making a low, soft howling sound as it raced through the metal roof of the building forming a boundary between the ground and the road.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ouseburn managed to post 146 all out after 43 overs, a score that looked a little light of where it needed to be...and so it proved.
Goldsborough appeared to be in charge from the off after the innings interval, scoring quickly and reaching the boundaries more often than not.
There were a few hiccups along the way, Ouseburn getting four wickets and slowing the progression of runs, however it wasn't enough to stop the visitors reaching 147 in just over 35 overs to win the game and earn 20 points to sit top of the table.
An enjoyable game to watch helped by being able to shelter from the wet-stuff and avoid the howling wind!

Byker warehouse to be transformed into 'unique' new bar, live music venue, and arts hub
Byker warehouse to be transformed into ‘unique’ new bar, live music venue, and arts hub
A disused warehouse in Newcastle’s East End will be transformed into a “unique” new food and drink, live music, and arts venue. Council chiefs have backed plans for a major new cultural hub for Byker and Ouseburn. The proposals will see an industrial building in St Michael’s Road repurposed as a “hub” for the area’s creative industries, which will be known as The Grove. The site, likened to…

Ouseburn Farm Water Feature by Warren Woodhouse (Creations)
youtube
Creation by @warrenwoodhouse. Located at the back of the farm’s main building near the stables, you’ll find a water feature added to the back of the main building. This water feature is not to be confused with the river which is nearby.

Thomas Ellerby - Portrait of John Wilson Carmichael - 1839
oil on panel, height: 25.7 cm (10.1 in); width: 20.2 cm (7.9 in)
South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, UK
Thomas Ellerby (10 January 1797 - 4 April 1861) was an English portrait artist whose work included 72 paintings chosen for hanging at The Royal Academy of Arts exhibitions from 1821 until 1857. He remained active as a painter until the end of his life.
James John Wilson Carmichael (9 June 1800 – 1868), also known as John Carmichael was a British marine painter.
Carmichael was born at the Ouseburn, in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, on 9 June 1800, the son of William Carmichael, a ship's carpenter. He went to sea at an early age, and spent three years on board a vessel sailing between ports in Spain and Portugal. On his return, he was apprenticed to a shipbuilding firm.  After completing his apprenticeship, he devoted all his spare time to art, and eventually gave up the carpentry business, setting himself up as a drawing-master and miniature painter. His first historical painting to attract public notice was the Fight Between the Shannon and Chesapeake, which sold for 13 guineas (£13.65). He then painted The Bombardment of Algiers for Trinity House, Newcastle, for which he received 40 guineas; it is still at Trinity House, along with The Heroic Exploits of Admiral Lord Collingwood in HMS "Excellent" at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, painted in collaboration with George Balmer. Another important early commission was for a View of Newcastle for which the city corporation paid him 100 guineas. During the redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle, Carmichael worked with the architect John Dobson to produce some joint works, including paintings with designs for the Central Station and the Grainger Market.[4] He also collaborated with John Blackmore to produce an illustrated book: Views on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway in 1836.
His name first appears as an exhibitor in 1838, when he contributed an oil painting, Shipping in the Bay of Naples, to the Society of British Artists. He showed both oil paintings and watercolours at the Royal Academy, his contributions including The Conqueror towing the Africa off the Shoals of Trafalgar (1841) and The Arrival of the Royal Squadron (1843).
He lived in Newcastle until about 1845, when he moved to London, where he was already known as a skilful marine painter. In 1855, during the Crimean War he was sent to the Baltic to make drawings for The Illustrated London News. His painting of the bombardment of Sveaborg, which he witnessed during this assignment, was exhibited at the Royal Academy and is now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum.
He later moved to Scarborough, where he died in 1868.
He published The Art of Marine Painting in Water-Colours in 1859, and The Art of Marine Painting in Oil-Colours in 1864.
His daughter Annie married William Luson Thomas son of a shipbroker and a successful artist who, exasperated by the treatment of artists by the Illustrated London News, founded in 1869 The Graphic newspaper which had immense influence within the art world.

Task 1: DUTCH HOSPITAL
In this brief, we were informed that for the first task, we were supposed to visit Ouseburn in the UK and do our research. Ouseburn was not a practical location for us to visit, so we requested a more practical location.
We were given three locations to pick from, and I chose to go with my original choice the Dutch Hospital.

developing my practical skills
for the second half of this project is a good chance for me to develop my artistic style. in the previous year my animation was critiqued as jumping between genres by my tutor.
"In your Ouseburn film, some of the handling of the illustration relating to the pig/bodies feels a little jarring and flips the genre between horror and comedy, when actually what you are saying is very poetic and shows a real depth of thought"
i agree with this critique, below is the animation itself.
I believe the tonal mismatch was due to the cartoony nature of the drawings. I believe the characters suffer from this the most. to try and develop past this I am going to try animating without the cartoony style. to be more specific I what to develop my skills without using any bold outlines. I feel I have become constricted by them and I want to push myself out of my comfort zone.

New location for the module "DUTCH HOSPITAL" Colombo
So in the brief, we were informed that for task No.1 we are supposed to visit Ouseburn in the UK and do our research. Ouseburn was not a practical location for us to visit, so we requested a new place for us to do the research. Then we were informed about our new location for the module. The Dutch Hospital in Fort, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
I have definitely heard about this place. But never visited. Maybe it's time to do some research.
