Stalled
It’s a funny video clip; a woman is at an airport trying to get to her next plane.  However, there is one problem; she is going nowhere, fast.  Unbeknown to her, she is walking in the wrong direction on a moving walkway.  She is using all her might and strength to stay up with this moving contraption, unsure of why she is not moving forward much at all, but she keeps walking, diligently, carrying her heavy bags.  She knows she can make it to the end, she has made it a third of the way already.  You can see her slowing in pace, and then push herself to speed up in efforts to keep moving forward.  All the while, people only look on, laughing and snickering on the side, instead of helping.  The amusement of the struggle is more of a highlight to the onlookers, rather than them taking the time to help this lady over the hurdle.  As I watch on, I can’t help but think that’s how my spirit feels.  My progression is slow, as if I’m walking the wrong way on that walkalator, and all the effort that I’m putting in hasn’t gotten me far.
Life moving around you, progressing in time and space, but no matter how much effort you put in, it only seems as if you are getting nowhere fast.  It’s like the spinning of wheels with mud slinging everywhere, only causing you to feel as if the hole you’re in grows deeper, and thus seemingly harder to get out of.  You realize, the only way out will require the assistance of a greater being, you need a muscle truck with big wheels and a towline to come along and pull you out.  Then you sit, stalled, waiting for assistance.  You consider, at least being stalled you are not making progress backward, but the reality is, you have no traction and you’re not moving forward either.  You know it’s going to take a mighty hand of saving grace to get you out of the mess you’re in.
It has been a long journey, and I’m tired and weary.  Every fiber in my body wants to stop and quit.  It’s not that I want to throw in the towel, but some days, that seems like the logical and easy thing to do.  I feel unproductive, I feel stalled, I feel like I have no traction of life in general, and I feel like I’m just walking the wrong way on the walkalator, trying to overcome the resistance of all that is working against me.  Time flies by and I have nothing to show for it.  I’m not gaining any ground or moving in any specific direction.  People travel on around me, but I feel stuck.  My hopes and dreams have been put on hold, and everyone else seems to be moving forward…happily.  I know deep down in my heart, to give in and to give up would result in me disappointing myself.  So I keep pushing and pushing and pushing, trusting that there are better days ahead, longing for the pull and tow that I need to get out of the hole.
In the bible, David experienced the many ups and downs of life.  His words in the Psalms reflect the human heart in our struggles.  He was constantly open and honest with God, laying out all his feelings and disappointments to Him, but always, he would turn his heart to God, summit to His ways, and trust that God was in control of all things.  I’m sure David felt many times that he was not gaining ground or advancing towards what God had for him, and sometimes, I bet, he probably thought he was drifting further from the promise.  It always seemed that opposition and resistance were there, fighting against him.  However, David never stopped.  He never gave in.  He held on to the promises of God through it all.  The words of God would be his traction.  Yes, he was to be King one day, but yet he was hiding and waiting in a dessert, not progressing toward the throne, and usually wondered why his enemies were against him.  His heart felt distracted and discouraged many times.
I love David’s honesty when he said, “Give ear to my prayer, O God; and do not hide Yourself from my supplication.  Give heed to me and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and am surely distracted.  Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the pressure of the wicked; for they bring down trouble upon me…..I said ‘Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest’…..As for me, I shall call upon God, and the Lord will save me.  Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and murmur, and He will hear my voice.  He will redeem my soul in peace from the battle which is against me…..Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken…..BUT I will trust in You” (Ps 55:1-3, 6, 16-18, 22, 23).  Through it all, through it all, God sustained David because of the faith and trust he put in God.  He believed God was able to fulfill His promises.  It was the traction that David needed to encourage himself and keep pressing on.
So thus, in my state of just filling like I’m spinning my wheels and fighting against the opposition, not moving forward, I encourage myself with the words of God, as that will sustain me and give me traction to keep pressing on.  “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you…..Do not fear, for I am with you” (Is 43:1-2, 5).  And when I’m in a place where only God can save me, the reason being is, “’So you are My witness,’ declares the Lord, ‘ [that] I am God’” (Is 43:12), and it’s not by my own hand or being that I will come out of the hole I’m stuck in, but the lifesaving towline God is stretching out for me to grab on to and cling to.
The resistance may be great, but keep walking…if not running for the promises God has given.  Keep trudging on in anticipation for God to do something great and pull you through and out of the mess.  “The reason you survived (or will survive) all hell breaking loose in your life is because your greatest days are ahead of you” (tweet from Christine Caine).  “But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation, My God will hear me.  Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy.  Though I fall I will rise; though I dwell in darkness, the Lord is a light for me” (Micah 7:7-8).  My help comes from the Lord, and I know that if I call upon the Lord, He will answer me, He will be with me in trouble, and He will rescue me (Ps121:2, 91:15).  I will press on and continue to move on in Him!
