Call of Duty OC: Isobel “Medusa” Williams
Tumblr media
When she enlisted in the United States Army at eighteen, the Combat Exclusion Policy had yet to be lifted, so she could not follow in her father’s footsteps. Instead, Isobel followed in her grandfather’s footsteps and became one of the best attack helicopter pilots the Army produced. She was recruited to Task Force 141 by Captain John Price at the request of Kate Laswell.
GENERAL
Name: Isobel Guinevere Williams Call Signs: Medusa; Echo 0-1 Rank: Lieutenant (British Army); Warrant Officer 4 (US Army, former) Gender: Female Birthday: March 25th, 1991 Nationality: American Place of Birth: Fort Benning, Georgia Home: [Redacted], Herefordshire, England Spoken Languages: English (native), Italian (native), Spanish (fluent), Pashto (fluent), Arabic (fluent), and Russian (conversational) Sexuality: Heterosexual Occupation: British SAS operator for Task Force 141; AH-64D/E Pilot (Formerly; separated from the US Army)
AFFILIATIONS/RELATIONSHIPS
Family
Father: First Sergeant Colin Michael Williams AKA Coyote, US Army Ranger (retired) Mother: Maria Gulianna Williams née Giordano, US Army nurse (retired) Siblings: Sergeant Aoife Elisabeth Williams, US Army medic. Relationship with parents: Isobel adores her father. He’s her hero. She wanted to grow up and be tough and fierce just like him when she was a kid. Her relationship with her mother is a little strained at times. She loves her mom very much, but being raised by the hot-headed Italian made things a little interesting, especially when Isobel was trying to prove her independence while Aoife was running around being a little shit. Relationship with sibling: Isobel and Aoife fought like cats and dogs when they were younger. They were three years apart but so close in personality. Poor Colin had to deal with three Italian-tempered women running around his house, causing chaos. Isobel loves Aoife with all her heart, but they still have the typical sister relationship. They get on each other’s nerves but would kill to protect each other.
Extended Family These people are not related to her, but she grew up with them and views them as family:
“Uncle” Robert “Badger” Tully, US Army Ranger (retired)
“Uncle” Jack “Omaha” Wagner, US Army Ranger (retired)
“Uncle” Greg “Elvis” Sumner, US Army Ranger (retired)
Pets: None. She loves all animals. Except small yippy dogs. She especially hates Pomeranians and Chihuahuas. It stems from when she was six and was attacked by a small dog.

PERSONALITY
Myers’s-Briggs Type: ISTJ-T (Turbulent Logictican)
Strong-willed and dutiful - Isobel’s integrity is everything to her, portraying it in her words and actions. She works hard and stays focused with patience and determination, which others admire.
Responsible - Her word is her promise, and promises mean everything to Isobel. She is loyal to a fault.
Jack-of-all-trades - Isobel is a repository for a vast wealth of knowledge. She learns quickly and can utilize what she’s learned at the drop of a hat.
Compassionate - She’s a bleeding heart for those in need, willing to throw herself into the line of fire to protect an innocent person without a second thought.
Intelligent - Isobel is an avid reader, consuming whatever she can get her hands on. Had she pursued college, she would have more than likely gone on to receive a Ph.D. in whatever subject she’d chosen to study. Safe to say, the woman is borderline genius.
When someone first meets her, Isobel can come across as stoic and withdrawn. It takes some prying, but eventually, she will open up to those willing to try to be her friend.
She goes into a certain mindset when in the heat of battle. She looks like she could kill you and probably will kill you.
Permanent case of resting bitch face

TRIVIA
Is obsessed with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
She has a ridiculous amount of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings lore memorized and can recall it anytime.
She has a replica of Darth Vader’s lightsaber, Aragorn’s sword Andúril, Legolas’s dual blades, and Arwen’s blade Hadhafang in storage at her parents’ place
Loves to read; her book collection is ridiculous. Isobel isn’t picky about what genre she reads, either.
She was caught reading a few times when she flew helicopters and was stuck on standby.
One of her favorite things to do in her downtime is go to used and new bookstores and browse for hours.
In her senior year of high school, she applied to Yale, Brown, and Columbia to keep her parents happy. She was accepted into all three but declined and enlisted in the military instead.
She married Lucas Greer (US Army Paratrooper, deceased) when she was nineteen. Their marriage was rough, and they legally separated when she was 27. The divorce was finalized in 2019 when she was 28.
She stays in touch with Lucas’s parents every once in a while.
The end of the marriage to their son was rough, but despite that, Isobel loved her in-laws. They were nothing but kind to her through everything that happened.
Covers her prominent scars with tattoos, but she’s also obsessed with tattoos. She currently has five, the biggest of which is her partial back piece.
Has a lovely singing voice, but her party trick is her ability to scream like Courtney LaPlante.
BACKGROUND
Born to a mother who served in the US Army as a nurse and a father who held the record for the most kills under any Army Ranger’s belt until he retired, Isobel grew up in a military household. When she was younger, she wanted to rebel against her parents and become a lawyer, but she always idolized her parents and eventually grew out of her lawyer phase.
Growing up, Isobel spent every second she could with her father when he was home. Colin deployed a lot, so the man treasured each moment he could be with his family. He took Isobel (and her younger sister once she was old enough) on every hunting trip, using the time to teach her how to shoot. He also taught her the Ranger Way. By the time Isobel was in high school, she was an expert in tracking, survival, and evasion. If needed, she could survive off the land for an indefinite amount of time, given the right tools.
Isobel had a somewhat normal high school experience. Her senior year, she was the Track & Field team's captain, bringing her team the gold for the 200 and 400-meter sprint at the State Championship and anchoring the relay team to take home first place. Besides participating in sports, Isobel was the captain of the debate team and a member of the National Honor Society.
Thanks partly to her well-rounded high school career, Isobel had her pick of colleges to choose from…but that was the opposite of what she wanted. On the day of her eighteenth birthday, she marched down to the nearest Army recruiter and enlisted.
She made it through Basic Training with flying colors, earning herself an Expert Marksmanship badge. Sadly, she couldn’t pursue her dream of becoming an Army Ranger like her father, so she became an attack helicopter pilot instead.
Upon graduating from Warrant Officer Candidate School and Warrant Officer Pilot School and flight training, Isobel found herself a fully-fledged AH-64D/E (Apache Longbow/Guardian) pilot with the callsign “Medusa.” Around this time, she also met her future husband Lucas Greer. He was a dashing paratrooper, and their romance was a whirlwind. Within three months, they were married. Things were blissful before the deployments started, but during their second deployment, Lucas began getting abusive.
The marriage continued to grow more and more toxic, and eventually, friends and family began to take notice. One in particular was Hannah “Sparrow” Clayton, Isobel’s best friend. During this time, Sparrow had an accident climbing K2 in Asia. The night Isobel got the call saying Sparrow had disappeared was the straw that broke the camel’s back, immediately filling for legal separation when Sparrow woke up from her coma.
By 2019, twenty-eight-year-old Isobel was legally divorced and happier than she had felt in years. She completed another two tours before being shot down by an enemy RPG after she and her gunner were scrambled to deal with the aftermath of the 2021 Hamid Karzai International Airport bombing, which landed her at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Isobel had served her country for twelve years, facing the prospect of being medically separated from the US Army or stuck behind a desk for the rest of her career. That’s when Laswell sent the uncut footage of the helicopter crash to Captain John Price, informing him that she was recruiting Isobel to Task Force 141.
Price arrived at the hospital and officially recruited Isobel on Laswell’s behalf. Isobel spent six months with TF141 before the Los Almas and Chicago events transpired. After proving her mettle, Price pulled some strings and pushed some paper to have Isobel officially become a member of the British Armed Forces to go through the SAS selection process.
After passing the grueling training, she came out the other side a member of the British SAS and a full-time member of Task Force 141.

this is your friendly reminder that “desi music” goes beyond urdu/hindi/punjabi music. there are dozens of other languages that inhabit south asia including pashto, tamil, sindhi, bengali, nepali, balochi, etc. just because a song isn’t in a language you speak, doesn't mean it’s not “desi”

Women constitute the backbone of Pashtun society and social organisation. Their role is not only limited to home management, they have played a significant role in all fields throughout history. They have stood in the battlefield with men to defend the motherland and if we look into Pashto literature we find a significant contribution of women and their role in society.
Landey, Tapey and Naarey are three forms of unwritten Pashto folk literature, more than half of this fine and heart-rendering poetry is the work of women.
Landay is a traditional Afghan poetic form consisting of a single couplet. The most enchanting landey have been sung by Pashtun women in battlefields and during episodes of love, such as:
پاس په کمر ولاړه ګله!
نصیب د چا يې؟ اوبه زه در خېژومه
Oh flower on the mountain peak,
It is I who water you, God knows who would own you.
Pashtun women also used landey in the battlefield. We come across events in our national history where the singing of a single landey by a woman has proven to be more effective than weapons.
In the battle of Maiwand, when Pashtuns prepared to fight for their country, a Pashtun maiden proudly sent off her lover to the battlefield and dispatched this message to the commander of this patriotic war:
پر ایوب خان مې سلام وایه!
دا دئ جانان مې کومکي در ولېږنه
Convey my greetings to Ayub Khan,
I have sent off my lover to lend a hand.
When the young Pashtun returns triumphant from war, his lover greets him as such:
د خېره راغلې! په خېر راشې!
چې د دښمن په مخ کې خړ نه شوې مئينه
Welcome! Welcome home, thank God,
You were not humbled before the enemy.
[See photos for more landeys]
Other parts of folk literature are Naara in stories and Gharra in the national dance called Attan and Sundarey (songs) recited in weddings. Most of the Naaras and wedding songs have been authored by women. We’ll look into those in future posts. Stay tuned!

294: Nashenas // Life is a Heavy Burden
Tumblr media
Life is a Heavy Burden Nashenas 2022, Strut (Bandcamp)
Nashenas is one of Afghanistan’s most beloved twentieth century singers. Born in Kandahar in 1935, he was raised in Karachi, British India (now Pakistan) before his family returned to Afghanistan during his adolescence. By his early 20s he had become a popular vocalist, with a weekly national radio slot singing traditional poetry, adaptations of popular Bollywood songs, and (with increasing frequency) his own compositions in Dari and Pashto.
Most of his work is in the ghazal tradition, a form of Arabo-Persian poetic ode (classically a simultaneous address to an absent lover and to God) that has remained popular in the East for nearly 1,500 years. The songs have a meditative consistency of rhythm, his vocals carrying the melody as he accompanies himself with drones on the harmonium while a tabla player supplies percussion, verses broken by instrumental refrains that answer the vocal melody. Nashenas has a panged yet resigned style suitable to the form, never leaning into cheap emotional theatrics. He spools out his words patiently, great feeling leavened by enlightened reservation. I picture him with his eyes closed, sitting cross-legged as he hums and croons the words that billow from the incense burning within him till the room has filled with it. Despite the focus on his voice though, this is quite dynamic music: the drumming on songs like “Life is a Heavy Burden” provides a raw, intense counterpoint to Nashenas’s steady vocal, while the blissful harmonium drone of “I Am Happy Alone” finds a common note with the primary colours of music made by children, outsider folkies, and the untrained.
youtube
Physical media wasn’t common in Afghanistan when Nashenas was establishing himself, and radio broadcasts were the primary outlet for performers. What recordings he did make were largely for radio archives, and many of these were apparently destroyed in the wars that have ravaged the region for decades. As a result, little of Nashenas’s prime is well-documented, and prior to this compilation virtually none of what does exist had been released in the West. Life is a Heavy Burden: The Songs and Poetry of Nashenas collects highlights from a brief run of Iranian 45 pressings of Radio Afghanistan recordings from the late ‘50s. The liners elaborate:
Although hard to fully confirm, it appeared these records were part of an arrangement between someone in Radio Afghanistan and Royal, one of the major labels in Iran. …Recordings were presumably supplied to the pressing plant in Tehran to be manufactured and then sold to the Afghan diaspora in the country, or exported back to Afghanistan. It was ultimately unsuccessful, with a few singles released by Nashenas, Zaland, his wife Sara, and others such as Ustad Mahwash, Ghulam Dastagir Shaida, and Ahmad Wali. Whoever arranged it apparently did not inform the artists themselves!
You’d never know how screamingly rare these pieces are, or that they were not sourced from masters, from the job Strut Records has done with Life is a Heavy Burden. The fidelity is brilliant, clearly of another epoch in terms of technology but unmarred by the dust and rough handling endured by near-70-year-old second-hand discs. I’d recommend this one to anyone with an interest in mid-century music from the Middle East and South Asia, or its influence on Western pop and experimental music from the ‘60s onward.

i fucking love the effort put into this, for multiple reasons: 1) it's not the instrumentals and a guy singing. this dude RERECORDED THE FUCKING ALBUM! He would've had to mix this shit! This would've taken sooooooo long. 2) I like how it's not a language remotely close to english. finnish isn't even part of the same language family as english. finnish is a part of the uralic languge family (a group of languages comprising much of northern europe and asia).
Tumblr media
most languages in europe are from Indo-european (english, spanish, french, swedish ect.) but don't be fooled, as this family also spreads out to many north indian and west asian languages (like hindi, pursian and pashto).
Tumblr media
a lot of those languages share words (like the english 'three', punjabi 'ਤਿੰਨ (tina)' and greek 'tria'). but finnish? FUCK NO! three in finnish is 'kolme' (K from "king', ol from 'old' and 'me' from 'men') so that means this album has almost no words that sound ANYTHING like the original. The only two titles that sound and look like the original are "Pink Triangle" ("Pinkki Kilmio") and "El Scorcho", which is just same same cuz it's spanish. so the result is a set of songs that sound NOTHING AT FUCKING ALL like the originals, with many of the melodies having to be kinda stretched to include the new words and sounds that rivers cuomo never had the fortune of singing 3) OMG THIS WOULD'VE TAKEN SO LONG TO FUCKING TRANSLATE! when you translate you have to take in so much more than just the words themselves you have to take in: change in phrasing, tone, cultural references, how to get the same emphasis into this new language from the one your translating from. and it's SO much worse with poetry and songs. The beat sounds off, the rhyme is completely gone, many translations just sound like nonsense being read aloud if the original lyrics maybe don't rhyme or are more impressionistic. and this is kinda easier with languages like english to french or spanish or swedish that share some vocab and have roots in many languages. but again i will remind you that finnish has none of that familiarity, so how these sounds sound to finnish native speaker must just be WILD!
he also did the blue album ffs

Ghazals -- discovering a new poetic tradition
youtube
I’d originally planned on diving into a Persian poem for this week’s blog post, but my curiosity about the structure of the poems themselves got the best of me. So today, I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned about ghazals, a poetry form (think haikus or sonnets) that emerged in the Arab world but has since become associated with Persian poetry. The word “ghazal” (غزل) originates from Arabic, a nod to the form’s roots. In the Arab world, any poem on the subject of love, regardless of structure or rhyme, was categorized as a ghazal. When the poetic form arrived in what is now Iran, Persian ghazals initially retained this same ambiguity, but over the years, ghazals became a standardized form.
These standardized ghazals are a minimum of five couplets and usually do not exceed fifteen lines. Classical Persian poets traditionally considered seven lines to be the “sweet spot.” Usually, the first couplet introduces a theme, and is constructed using a rhyme followed by a refrain. Subsequent couplets repeat the refrain, but rhyme the second line with both lines of the first stanza. Thus, ghazals follow something along the lines of an AA BA CA DA rhyme pattern. The final couplet usually incorporates the poet's signature, typically by referring to the author in the first or third person. Frequently, this also involves weaving in the poet's own name or some derivation of its meaning. Unlike some forms of poetry that revolve around a plot or are narrative in style, ghazals are composed of completely independent lines that are only loosely connected by an overarching theme.
Ghazals gained prominence during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and were popularized by legendary Persian poets like Rumi and Hafiz. Eventually, poets writing in Urdu, Hindi, Pashto, Turkish, and Hebrew also adopted the form. However, ghazals were not popularized in the English-speaking world until the 1960s, when Indian musicians introduced ghazals to English-speaking audiences in the form of songs. In India and Pakistan, the art of singing or performing ghazals is an age-old tradition. Later, Indian poet Agha Shahid Ali introduced ghazals in their classical poetic form to American poets, several of which have since made attempts to write ghazals in English.
The intricate construction of the ghazal makes it by far the most fascinating poetic form I’ve learned about – it makes me quite disappointed that all those poetry units back in elementary school English class never introduced us to ghazals. Writing (bad) poems was a favorite pastime of mine as a kid, and reading about ghazals has rekindled my urge to write poetry – maybe in ghazal form this time! As the nature of ghazals makes translation very difficult, I’ve made a new goal of one day being able to read these masterpieces in their original Persian. For now, I’ve been listening: although Indian ghazal performances are much more widespread, I found a stunning performance of Rumi’s poems that I’d like to share with you all.

BIOGRAPHY
(TW: mentions of bipolar disorder, injury and amputation, mental health rehab)
Niko Stark was born in Berlin to Thomas and Mackenzie Stark– his father was a US Marine and had been stationed in Germany shortly before Niko was born. Niko was their oldest child and he would eventually be joined by his younger sister two years later after the family had returned to Camp Pendleton again on orders for his father– as a result of the fact that they moved back to the United States when Niko was still very young he very much considers himself more American than anything else ( neither of his parents were permanent residents or citizens of Germany when he was born and he is solely American where citizenship is concerned ). He was an incredibly easy going person even in childhood– his mother often told him stories about his temperament as a baby and the fact that he rarely cried or fussed or gave them any trouble at all with temper tantrums and things of that nature. He was quick to make friends and often spent weekends with friends when his parents allowed it.
By the time he was eleven he was well aware that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the Marines– his father was reluctant if only for the fact that he’d seen war and knew first hand how it could change a person and he worried constantly about something happening to his baby boy. Still, when Niko turned eighteen he enlisted immediately and was sent overseas for his first tour of duty within a year. Military service was something he took to easily though he had a difficult time adjusting to the violence of it all and the deep suffering the people around him ( both those who served with him and the local populations he interacted with ) were experiencing. He’d always been an empathetic person and it tore him apart the slightest bit not to be able to help anyone or feel like he was overseas for anything close to the right reasons. Still, he served faithfully and returned for a second tour of duty without batting an eye.
It was during a patrol on his second tour that his convoy ran into a series of IED’s that had been placed between sweeps of the road between outposts often traveled. Though he was med-evaced and brought to surgery as quickly as possible the accident eventually resulted in Niko’s right leg being amputated just above the knee before he was sent to a military hospital in Germany to recover properly. His family was there to greet him when he finally woke and though their presence was comforting to an extent Niko still fell into a deep depression that seemed to last months before it evaporated in an instant only to be replaced by a mania that his parents took notice of immediately. Several conversations with a psychiatrist later and Niko was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder– resulting in medical retirement from the USMC after his case was reviewed.
He was devastated by the turn his life had taken and he lived with his parents for nearly a year once he’d recovered enough to return to the United States. He relapsed several times in the first six months of being treated and wound up in a mental health rehab facility before he began to take his mental health seriously and threw himself into therapy and sticking to a medication regiment and doing everything in his power to take care of himself. During the course of his recovery he earned a business degree remotely from USC with the intention of opening a business of some kind– his broad idea was to do something that would serve the express purpose of making people happy. It was his mother who suggested a flower shop and his father who suggested he consider relocating to Providence Peak– where his father had grown up– to be in a calmer environment that might allow him more stability in terms of his mental health.
Niko moved to Providence Peak two months later– just shy of his twenty-fourth birthday and bought a space with an apartment above the shop so he wouldn’t have to travel at all to get it up and running. It took him a few months to open properly but he’s run Silver Sun Flowers happily since that moment. He’s doing his best to return to normalcy and feel like the same person he was before he’d joined the Marines– it’s difficult even on his good days but he’s never been one to shy away from things and he remains open and honest with his struggles while he’s in the pursuit of genuine happiness in his life as a whole.

BIOGRAPHY.
(TW: mentions of bipolar disorder, injury and amputation, mental health rehab)
Henry Burnham was born in Casper, Wyoming to Thomas and Mackenzie Burnham– his father was a US Marine and had been stationed in Germany shortly before Henry was born Stateside. Henry was their oldest child and he would eventually be joined by his younger sister two years later after the family had returned to Wyoming from Camp Pendleton on orders for his father.
Still, when Henry turned eighteen he enlisted immediately and was sent overseas for his first tour of duty within a year.
Though he was med-evaced and brought to surgery as quickly as possible the accident eventually resulted in Henry's right leg being amputated just above the knee before he was sent to a military hospital in Germany to recover properly. His family was there to greet him when he finally woke and though their presence was comforting to an extent Henry still fell into a deep depression that seemed to last months before it evaporated in an instant only to be replaced by a mania that his parents took notice of immediately. Several conversations with a psychiatrist later and Henry was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder– resulting in medical retirement from the USMC after his case was reviewed.
During the course of his recovery he decided to pursue a passion he'd had since childhood and earned a degree in creative writing from USC with the intention of becoming a novelist - to share a part of himself that was so important and know that he was capable of putting something positive into the world. It was his his father who suggested he consider relocating to Providence Peak– where Thomas had grown up– to be in a calmer environment that might allow him more stability in terms of his mental health.
Henry moved to Providence Peak two months later– just shy of his twenty-fourth birthday and bought a fixer upper in Bighorn Hills that he spent every moment he wasn't writing fixing up with the help of his father, uncles and cousins. It took him a few months to get settled but once he did he began to write prolifically and ten years later has three bestsellers to his name. He’s doing his best to maintain normalcy and feel like the same person he was before he’d joined the Marines– it’s difficult even on his good days but he’s never been one to shy away from things and he remains open and honest with his struggles while he’s in the pursuit of genuine happiness in his life as a whole.
