Daniella Monet Alleges Nickelodeon Wouldn't Cut Her "Sexualized" "Victorious" Scene

Daniella Monet is speaking out about the environment on Nickelodeon's "Victorious." Monet played Trina on the series alongside Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies, and Victoria Justice. Monet was 18 when she started filming "Victorious," and all of her costars were younger.

On Aug. 30, Insider published an investigation into the work of "Victorious" creator Dan Schneider, who also produced Nickelodeon series like "Zoey 101," "Drake and Josh," "iCarly," and more. Jennette McCurdy, who starred on "iCarly" and "Sam & Cat," recently spoke out about behavior on set of those shows by a person referred to as 'The Creator," in her memoir "I'm Glad My Mom Died," which some readers have interpreted as a reference to Schneider.

Monet told Insider that she previously reached out to Nickelodeon after filming a "Victorious" scene where she ate a pickle while applying lip gloss. She felt it was too sexual, but the network aired it anyway. Fans online have also pointed to other "Victorious" scenes they felt were too sexual. Monet told Insider that Schneider was not the only one to blame for these incidents since the network's department of standards and practices were approving of everything. She also blamed Schneider's men-dominated writers rooms. According to the outlet, Monet said that most of "Victorious" was "very PC, funny, silly, friendly, chill." Things like the pickle scene would come up, though, "once in a while."

"Do I wish certain things, like, didn't have to be so sexualized?" Monet said in the article. "Yeah. A hundred percent." Monet also said that some of the outfits she and her costars were put in were "not age appropriate." "I wouldn't even wear some of that today as an adult," she explained to Insider. Costumer Kerry Mellin and an anonymous writer on the show both told Insider that there were often fights behind the scenes about the clothes for the cast and that Schneider would campaign for the more revealing options.

A person close to Schneider told Insider that the costumes "were seen and approved by dozens of people, including the parents of the actors, and the state-licensed teachers on set." Mellin also said in the article that no one forced child actors to wear outfits they said they were uncomfortable in and that she didn't think Nickelodeon shows sexualized the actors more than other shows did. However, she also added that people didn't often share their worries with Schneider because they were worried about their jobs. "It's an imbalance of power," Mellin told Insider. "Jennette felt it, the designer felt it, I felt it, all of us feel it."

Nickelodeon did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR's request for comment. In March 2018, Nickelodeon announced it was ending its production deal with Schneider. The New York Times reported in 2021 that the network investigated Schneider and found evidence of verbal abuse but not sexual misconduct.

Has the balcony ever been that crowded/packed for a Trooping before?

I think so. There was a PC push to “slimline” the monarchy and the balcony appearances were supposedly getting edited, but I’m not sure if that actually happened or not. PopSugar did a roundup of the TTCs and they all look fairly crowded to me.

1. What is the best book you’ve read so far this year? The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (reread and currently two books into the series), and Yugioh by Kazuki Takahashi (first time reading and currently a little less than halfway through the series). I enjoy both of these series for similar reasons, for the lovable, endearing characters, and the zany, wacky adventures with some occasionally dark and twisted scenes to spice it up.

2. If you could ask any author (living or dead) one question, who would it be and what would you ask? I would ask Charles Dickens about what endings he had in mind for The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

3. Would you ever want to have a book of your own published? That would certainly be a fun and interesting experience, but all I’ve got are a bunch of half-baked ideas, not stories.

4. What do you do to get out of a reading slump? I don’t really get reading slumps. If a book is not working out for me, I just put it down and read something else. I use the Popsugar Reading Challenge if I need help picking out the next book to read, and if I’m behind on my Goodreads Book Challenge, I pick up a manga or a picture book.

5. How do you feel about book-to-screen adaptations in general? The two mediums rely on totally different ways of telling a story, so it’s pretty much impossible to completely and accurately translate a book to a film. So long as the adaptation is true to the spirit and ideas of the source material (like Lord of the Rings), or if it can stand on its own as a good movie without the book’s help (like Jurassic Park), it’s fine by me.

6. If there was a fire and you only had enough time to grab 5 books from your shelves, what would you take? The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, Moby-Dick by Herman Melville, The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, Watership Down by Richard Adams, and Bambi by Felix Salten.

7. Do you listen to music while you read, and if so, how do you decide what to listen to? I like to listen to lofi hiphop or chill music while I read because it’s pleasant to listen to, but not too distracting. I just pick a random playlist on YouTube or Spotify.

8. How much of a role does a book cover play for you? Pretty covers certainly catch my attention, but I always do some research first before actually buying or checking out a book...unless it’s a pretty collector’s edition of a beloved classic, then I’m all like GIMME GIMME GIMME.

9. Do you have any “chicken soup books” (titles you return to when your feeling low or ill)? What are they? I like to read HP Lovecraft when I’m sad. I don’t know why.

10. What do you like to snack on while reading? I don’t usually snack on anything while I’m reading. I just find it distracting for some reason. I do like to drink tea while I’m reading, though.

11. If you could only (re)read the same book or series for the rest of your life, which one would you pick? I don’t think I could ever do that willingly, but if it was life or death I’d pick One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. The series is INSANELY long and still ongoing, so I’d probably be old as the hills or deceased by the time I got to the last volume...unless (it’s very likely) the series would continue long after I was dead, so I’d still be reading the series as a ghost.

Google adds ‘Stories’ to its search app for iOS and Android

Google announced today it’s introducing a Stories feature to its Google app for iOS and Android, which now reaches over 800 million people per month. In a new carousel within the app, users in supported markets will be presented with a row of tappable visual Stories from participating publishers. These Stories can include full screen video, photos, and audio and can link out to the publisher’s other content, if desired.

The company has been developing its own Stories product for some time. In 2018, it introduced AMP Stories, based on technology developed for Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages project. The Stories, which are already integrated into mobile Google Search, are meant to give Google its own alternative to the Stories offering found in other apps like Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. But, in Google’s case, Stories are focused on publisher content.

Today, Google is referring to this visual content as “Web Stories,” not AMP Stories, and is integrating the experience into the Google search app in the U.S., India and Brazil to start.

Here, users will see the row of Web Stories at the top of the Discover tab, where they can tap to enter the full-screen Story experience. Like Stories found in other apps, you can tap to move forward to the next page in a Google Web Story or swipe to move to a different Story in the carousel.

Publishers are responsible for authoring their Stories and have control over Story monetization, hosting, and sharing and adding links to the Stories, Google notes. To create these Stories, the publishers can use drag-and-drop tools like the Web Story editor for WordPress, MakeStories, or NewsroomAI. Technical users can instead opt to code Web Stories themselves.

Early adopters of the format have been using Web Stories on their homepage, on social channels, in newsletters, and more, in addition to having them featured in Google Search, the company says.

Google has been working with a number of publishers to help them create Web Stories for Search and now, its native mobile app. Partners include Forbes, Vice, Refinery29, USA Today, Lonely Planet, Now This, Thrillist, Popsugar, The Dodo, Bustle, Input, Nylon, The Hollywood Reporter, Blavity, PC Gamer, Golfweek, and many others. The publishers and Google collaborated on the new product and helped build out its features, Google says.

To date, over 2,000 websites have published Stories that have been indexed by Google.

The update to the Google app on iOS and Android is rolling out today.
