“That’s why I’m not impressed with your story, Dad! It’s that you knew what I was going through and you and you didn’t do anything about it and that makes you an unconscionable coward.”

Watch the trailer for Midnighters, which is set to premiere on Monday at the LA Film Festival. It takes a familiar set-up and goes in unpredictable directions, combining influences from Alfred Hitchcock, the Coen Brothers, and Danny Boyle.
The thriller is directed by Julius Ramsey (The Walking Dead); read my interview with him about the film here. Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes), Perla Haney-Jardine (Spider-Man 3), Dylan McTee (Sweet/Vicious), and Ward Horton (Annabelle) star.
Midnight, New Year’s Eve: when all the hopes of new beginnings come to life – except for Lindsey and Jeff Pittman, whose strained marriage faces the ultimate test after they cover up a terrible crime and find themselves entangled in a Hitchcockian web of deceit and madness.

It did take a couple of scenes for me to realise that it was Kate Winslet on screen.

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished all 122 minutes of 'Steve Jobs’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

Again....this one was something that I came in a bit blind. Its likely that the connection to recognisable names fizzled out after the big marketing push for the film.
I think the idea of seeking out a biopic is isn’t appealing to me compared to others (who are riveted when one comes out). It’s likely the reason that if I already know about the person (in this case the guy who acquired Pixar before selling it to Disney) and spending two hours on a film wouldn’t really change my feelings towards him.
So it’s the case of ‘there’s an opportunity --- lets go for it!’ kind of thing. So I did watch it from the start...and was surprised how engaging it was. I recognised Michael Stuhlbarg and apart from that...the film was just fueled by its rhythm (and occasional humour).
Little did I know that that writing rhythm should be one I should be familiar as it was penned by Aaron Sorkin. Then after realising it was Kate....the additional familiar faces popped up: Seth Rogen Jeff Daniels....
Somehow I feel like the humour is courtesy of Danny Boyle...who had that sort of ‘wry’ thing going on while I was listening to his commentary on ‘Yesterday’.
PS: So what is the answer to John’s question to Steve? First I heard the line uttered...I did wonder as well. But then after thinking about it more...I realise that it may have to do with grief. How the child has to get past that first (because it happened before being ‘selected’)...before relishing his parents.

My verdict of the film: 6/10
