Part 1: ranking plush anacondas 🐍

"Cobra" is a little vaguer than anaconda, because "cobras" include a specific genus and the common names of a variety of snake species. As such, I'll give them more leeway in terms of color accuracy, but I think the shape of the hood will make or break these snake plushes.

Cobra Stuffed Animal by Wild Republic

11/10. I chose cobras after I found this guy because I love him, so much. Her cute little face. Their perfect little hood. They look like they're smiling. I can't see the back, but I think this is a creative interpretation of a monocled cobra, which can be striped. The spectacled cobra also has similar front-hood ornamentation, usually seem more "freckled" than "striped". I think this could pass for a creative interpretation of both. Unlike most snake plushies, the proportion of the head is much more accurate and in my opinion, cuter. Wild Republic really redeemed themselves from last time.

4/10, this guy certainly has the look of maybe a king cobra, and that chunky head shape so many retailers seem to use for snakes actually fits the cobra. But if I want a plush of a deadly snake I would prefer it have the :< expression of a cobra and the big, charming eyes. Also, king cobras should have round pupils.

8/10 This is one of the longer cobra plushes, and he has an excellent shape, very huggable, soft, and does look like he'd work as a pillow although I couldn't confirm whether there is wire in her body. I'll note that even the product photo seems to have a manufacturing defect in one eye. This cobra was found on several websites, but I couldn't find the manu. The cape cobra can be orange, so even that works!

10/10 considering the size and simplicity I actually really like these ones. They all look a little angry but extremely cute, which is what I want in a cobra stuffie. Not angry as in vicious but angry like you just walked in on them at a bad moment and they turned around in surprise. Again, the cobras have heads the same size as their body, which I think is great. There are no blue cobras (I think) but I will accept this inaccuracy for the sake of cuteness.

2/10. My partner described these as "muppet like" and I actually added a point of that because thats a cute concept, but I hate these. I despise cartoon animals with this much white in their eyes, but other than that I think the hood just looks awful, like terrible finds, and the scales look too fish-y because they're big. I wish more plushies had open mouths, though, but I would definitely put fangs in them if I did an open mouth.

6/10 This small cobra is like the platonic ideal of cobra plushes. Its fairly accurate in color, fairly accurate in shape, and uses simple patterns effectively. Its like an 8/10 for accuracy, but it just doesn't charm me as much as some of the others I've seen.

9/10 another excellent cobra plush. This is more perfect than I ever could have imagined. The material used looks to be textured with different textures on top and bottom. My only complaint with the toy is the hood should be connected a little lower to match the shape of the head. My other complaint is that I can't actually find this anywhere for sale- I think it was sold out but still appeared on the pinterest page for the online store.

7/10 I really like the vibe of this guy. Definitely a more flashy variety, not really trying to be realistic with its gimmick of having shiny scales, but it has a cute shape. Could use a bigger hood, maybe. Adorable though.

7/10 I have no idea if this is real. This snake is present on the wildrepublic amazon page and I could find no other pictures of it. Here is the saga of what I found about it:

One US reviewer posted a photo (2022) of what they purchased and it was clearly the cobra reviewed in WR 2, which does not have the fancier materials. The WR website has the WR 2 snake as being $23 but the amazon listing lists WR 4 as $55. In fact, a UK reviewer on Amazon from 2023 posted that the snake was not shiny and in the photo it looks the same as WR 2. I do hope people aren't buying for $55 from amazon when it is only $22 on their website- assuming everyone is getting WR 2 instead of the above picture. I did check and confirm the prices for plushes are normally the same on amazon and their website. I also went ahead and reported this to amazon, although I have no idea whether they take action on things like this.

8/10 Now THIS is what I'm looking for when I see a snake with an open mouth. This guy is discontinued so I couldn't find many details but he appears to be a puppet. I love his little fangs and delightful expression. Definitely a shape > pattern and color design, but it works.

In conclusion

There are way more cobras than anacondas, and I would say they're generally more charming. I think the hood makes the cobra plushes instantly recognizable, but it also seems to be the only thing that will convince designers to make a snake plushes head a reasonable size compared to its body. Most of the hoods do tend to be a bit fin-ish and the nicer ones have the hood taper down the body.

Cobras dont always have their hood up- they do so as a threat display- so I've been ruminating on the techniques one could use to make a fold-out hood without ruining the plushness of the toy. I have not been able to think up a good solution.

Ranking Plush Anacondas 🐍

When I was a kid, basically every nature center, zoo, and museum had those Audubon society plush birds, little stuff guys made to look roughly accurate in shape and color (mostly color) but I've noticed that not much /accurate/ merch exists for snakes. So now I'm going to find all the snake plushies I can and rank them.

5/10 This plush looks co cute, huggable, and has a great pattern... but looks nothing like a green anaconda. I would accept this plush if it were called an emerald boa (even if its not so accurate to that species either); Gustavo looks like a friend but he gets points off for accuracy.

Giant Anaconda by New Adventure Planet (I think)

7/10 I'm not sure what charms me about this one; it has no pattern, so it isn't particularly accurate, but I like the dinosauresque shape of its head. It also looks very thick, wich I appreciate, but not too heavy, and I like that there are pictures with a human for size.

Super Jumbo Anaconda by Wild Republic (1)

4/10 If this were a more impartial review this snake would get a 8/10 for accuracy. Wild republic are the creators of the Audubon bird stuffed animals I mentioned so their pattern and color accuracy tends to appear on point. But I'm not going to lie, I despise this snake. The olive green of an anaconda is washed out to this sickly green (more akin to a yellow anaconda); the tiny pinpoint eyes and pointed nose of a true anaconda has become this Jurassic park monster, but not in a cute way like the NAP one. It looks like a naked bear.

6/10 I like the smaller version of the wild republic anaconda much better, although still not very much. At least its a more playful neon color, and I feel like the markings dont look so formal, like the pattern doesn't take itself too seriously.

8/10 I just like this guys bulging eyes and chaotic pattern. It looks to be a slightly deeper green. Definitely a 6/10 for accuracy but has a lot of spirit.

8/10 for huggability, 6/10 for anacondaness. I'm not sure if this was actually concieved of as an anaconda since its so far off, but it was advertised on multiple sites as an anaconda.

In conclusion

despite being almossssst certainly the most recognizable snake, the accuracy of anaconda plushes from even reputable companies is incredible disappointing.

This is an anaconda (a young one, I think); Note the thick, huggable, chunky body, perfect for a pillowy plush. and the tiny, pointed head with beady eyes.

todays bear from my mind is this guy! sorta

so when i was little i had a plush bear that kinda looked like him! (its not exact but I don't have any pictures of him)

and he was my best friend!! i was never the type of kid to carry stuffed animals around with them in everyday life, that was just never me. but I did pet him and bring him around my house! he was a good friend!

but then truffle our dog got a hold of him and lets just say I don't have any pictures of him......

but that alone wouldnt make him a bear from my mind!! so!!! his back story was that he was actually a prince!!! from far away that had been turned into a stuffed bear!! he was sad at first, but then he found that he actually liked it better cuz he didn't have to see to all his royal responsibilities anymore!! and he had me!!! so he was happy! and all I had to do was be his friend!!

prev post well i scrolled once and realized it IS a moshi monster huge win for the moshi monster artstyle recognizers of the world

#verrry exciting. i never actualy got suepr into moshi monsters (didnt know there was an online game until last year) but i had the ds game #the carnival one. n rly loved it #and i hate a katsuma plush who was legit my favorite toy id take him with me everywhere. theres even this frankly very scary book i wrote #and illustrated (bc that used 2 be my favorite thjng t do.. i would staple paper together and judt write things like i had one abt natural #disasters explainjng them bc i loveddd natural disasters basicslly) #but anywyas. i wrote one abt katsuma listing all of katsumas favorite things n stuff. katsumas favorite food was STRAWBERRIES and he loved #hide and seek #speaking od hide and seek one time i was playing hide and seek with him u see. which means i was finding places to hide him #and then pretending to find him. and atp was when we livd in my grans house #so there was a pool table downstairs. andwell. i shoved him into one of the pool table holes #so imagine my shock and horror when i pulled him out and he was absolurely covered in like..black dust. #luckily there was a bathroom in the basement (my grandpa built it it was called the loo #) so i went in there and just. run water over him #and then wrapped him in a towel. and then tried to sneak past my.mom upstairs #bc she was on the couch and inws trying to get to my room. so i wrapped katsuma in a human sized towel and like. quickly ran up the atairs #and past my mom. and she was like. looking at the comically large bundle of towels in my hands. like Everything ok. and i was lke YES. and #ran to my room. idk why i was convinced id be in trouble if she found out i .. #got a toy dirty? n tried to wash it? but it ws very funny. thats my 2 biggest katsuma memories but i loved that guy. i took him 2 the #playgrounds we went to (my mom hd a fun game wed do where we would go to a new playground and then wed rate the playground based on certain #features like what all things it had how much fun we had how long we wanted tonsray etc. so whenever we were like trying to kill time in a #new town or something like rhat wed go and she always had th clipboard on her. so we would do that :]] and i liked to take katsuma and push #katsuma on the swings and down the slides and things of that nature

I'm going to premise this with the unfortunate fact that I am currently taking a break from selling, but I did, and will in the future!

I have an Etsy store but it's currently on vacation mode, but I have reviews for former sales on there if you'd like to take a peek.

With Etsy screwing its sellers lately I'm looking at moving shop before I reopen for sales. Possibly Shopify, but I'll post an update when that day comes.

As for commissions, not currently. I have a full-time job outside of art that takes a lot out of me, so my art-making schedule is unpredictable. I don't want to subject people to that uncertainty, or to take on more than I can deliver, so for now I only make pre-mades. (You'll see some plush marked as commissions but they'll be for close friends and family only at this time.)

But if there's an animal or color you really want to see in a shop update, I do entertain suggestions!
