Disclaimer: I don’t recall seeing a leftist say both things at the same time. But I’m pretty sure I’ve seen leftists who expressed both views at different times.

A while back, there were stories about baby formula shoplifters. A bunch of people said the stores should just take the hit, since the thieves were clearly just poor parents who couldn’t afford it normally.

Turned out most of the thieves are, according to most estimates, a) criminals who want to cut drugs, or b) criminals who want to resell it to actual parents. Possibly at a markup.

I see similar thinking with homelessness. A lot of people think homeless folks are people who are just poor*, so they should be able to go anywhere, do anything. 

But often, it’s the result of drug and/or mental issues. And no amount of free healthcare is going to fix a lot of those.

Not to mention hygiene. And the loss of local business. Who wants to shop somewhere there’s a chance of stepping on a needle? I have yet to see a pro-homeless person who was willing to support people dropping a deuce on the sidewalk.

Heck, apparently there are homeless people who move to San Fran to live off taxpayer money.

And then we come back to shoplifters. Loads of people who steal stuff not because of hunger, but because of permissive crime policies  that more or less decriminalize petty theft.

It’s not need.

It’s because they can get away with it.

*Which is, implicitly, someone else’s fault.
