Holiday leftovers: money money money. From Newport to St. Augustine, the hypercapitalism of the Gilded Age found its way south via the rail endeavors of Henry Flagler. His money and ambition built the ultraluxury resorts of the day in St. Augustine, which have now been converted to art galleries and college classrooms. #staugustine #historicstaugustine #henryflagler #poncedeleonhotel #flaglercollege #alcazarhotelstaugustine #lightnermuseum #gildedage #capitalism #hypercapitalism #needsmoregold (at St. Augustine, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cni6zfEOlDl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The once ‘Ponce De Leon Hotel’ 🏢 was Henry Flagler’s flagship hotel, now we call it Flagler College. This building is beautiful & ornate. @rachellynn0219 & I could not believe all the detail. If you ever go make sure to look up right when you walk in. #poncedeleon #poncedeleonhotel #henry #flagler #henryflagler #ornate #building #florida #staugustine #saintaugustine #college #flaglercollege #nikon #tripadvisor #tripadvisorpic #nikonusa #nikon📷 #nikontop #nikonphotography #nikonphoto_ #nikonistas #nikontop_ #nikon_top #nikkor #nikkor2470 #nikkor16_80mm #photography (at Flagler College)

The restored exterior of the Ponce de Leon Hotel, an exclusive luxury hotel in St. Augustine, #Florida. The #hotel was built by millionaire developer, Standard Oil co-founder, and founder of what became the Florida East Coast Railway, Henry M. Flagler. Opened January 10, 1888, the hotel was designed in the Spanish Renaissance style as the first major project of the New York architecture firm Carrère & Hastings. The hotel was also one of the first buildings in the country wired for electricity from the onset, with the power being supplied by DC generators installed by Flagler's friend, Thomas Edison. During World War II, the Ponce de Leon Hotel was taken over by the federal government and was used as a Coast Guard Training Center. In 1968, the original building and grounds of the hotel became part of Flagler College. #fl #flhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #architecture #oldhouselove #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #ushistory #americanhistory #exploreflorida #staugustine #staugustinefl #travelgram #roadtrip #igersstaugustine #totallystaugustine #904staugustine #floridalife #poncedeleonhotel #flaglercollege #archi_ologie (at Ponce de Leon Hotel)

He painted eight female figures representing the four elements - fire, earth, air, and water - and the four stages of Spanish exploration - adventure, discovery, conquest, and civilization. During World War II, the Ponce de Leon Hotel was taken over by the federal government and was used as a Coast Guard Training Center.
