#PopUpExhibit
Starting tomorrow, the UWM Distinctive Collections ( @uwmspeccoll & @uwmarchives) are featuring some selections to celebrate Native American Heritage Month November 20-22! This map is one of many found in the AGSL exhibit. Depicting the Pony Express in 1860-1861, it interestingly doesn't have any direct reference to native people (although there are a couple illustrations). Silences surrounding native places and people are often found in maps and narratives about the West and western expansion.

#FlashbackFriday: Happy “Flashback Friday” everyone! Hope you had a great week! Last Friday (9/18/2020), I drove to Chatham,NY to write an exhibition review about the pop-up exhibit, “Shakers: In Community”, for “The Eastwick Press”. This exhibit, which centers around the Shakers’ life and their community inclusion, had some cool artifacts on display; a mode-ometer (present-day metronome), an orthopedic shoe (present day platform shoe), wooden wheelchair, a large Shaker dresser, and other Shaker artifacts representing the simple, Shaker way of life! This pop-up exhibit is on view through October 4,2020 and is free to the public. The Shaker Museum/Mount Lebanon will begin building their new museum in Chatham in 2021 & will be complete in 2023. More Shaker exhibits will follow after this current exhibit and future presentations at 17 Main St. Chatham, NY. You can learn about “Shakers: In Community” & Shaker Museum/Mt. Lebanon in today’s edition of “The Eastwick Press” and on the museum website https://shakers.org. Happy Friday! (Photos by Amy L. "Librarian reads the small print": A pop-up sampling of miniature books from the Evron Collins Collection Diminutive size is the only feature uniting this throng of tiny tomes. Come and see the “Finger” New Testament; the “Kleinbuchs” distributed by the Winterhilfswerk; a sibling of the first book to travel to the moon; and many more! Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this installment of Unstacked!, enjoy a selection of early 19th century books and a couple of later facsimiles on landscape architecture, mathematics, dancing, and poetry.
We displayed these books during our recent Rare Book Meet & Greet at a performance of Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia at the University of Michigan’s Arthur Miller Theatre.

Mark your calendars! There will be a symposium and celebration of Marian Anderson Friday, October 26 all day from 9AM to 9PM in the Class of ’78 Orrery Pavilion on the sixth floor of Van Pelt. To honor the career of African American Philadelphia-born musician and cultural ambassador, Marian Anderson (1897-1993), the Kislak Center and the Departments of Music and Africana Studies have organized a one-day symposium to explore Anderson’s musical career in the context of the intersection of sound studies and critical race theory. Confirmed speakers include Naomi Andre, Kira Thurman, Carol Oja, Ellie Hisama, Guy Ramsey with a performance by Karen Slack and interview of Florence Quivar. The symposium will conclude with a musical recital celebrating Anderson’s remarkable musical career. An exhibition of items from Penn Libraries’ vast Marian Anderson archival collection will be on view during the symposium. My painting “The Furies III - Maria” was included in BUMP: A Color Focused Popup Exhibition, with a nice reception today at the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design. Thanks to juror Mary Laube and to @suzannedittenber for coordinating the exhibit.
