Our Son Got Married!

Part 1

We gained a DIL last weekend at a lovely wedding in South Paris, Maine.

Brady and Cloe did almost all the wedding planning themselves, starting with the selection of a quaint venue in rural Maine, about an hour away from Portland. The rehearsal was on Friday; as the parents of the groom we hosted the rehearsal dinner (Beth did a great job selecting the venue, planning the menu, etc.). The pics below are from that evening.

On Saturday, anyone who had arrived was invited to join a casual welcome dinner on site. This was almost a mini-reception in light of the fact that essentially everyone had to travel to attend the wedding. Brady and Cloe met while attending Indiana University, as did Beth and I as well as my sister and her husband and my cousin and her husband. Many of the attendees also went to IU so we took a picture of all the IU grads; a few more showed up on Sunday.

I don't have many pictures from the actual wedding day but, everyone looked beautiful - the bride and groom of course, but Beth also looked great in her dramatic purple gown. Our daughter Katy was a female groomsman and looked lovely in her dress as well. The picture below is my sister and I.

Not a fan of Dawson, not a fan of Brett, wanted to add my 3 cents.

Brett used to be afraid that she was the substitute for Dawson and the writers didn’t make it easier for her. We can all argue as much as we want, but so much of brettsey storylines were used for Dawsey. Come on, wedding reception at Molly’s? I’ve seen somewhere on tumblr that someone suggested Brett’s parents farm and it would be so unique and no one will say anything about Cass first wedding because there wouldn’t be anything similar about it.

And yeah, those kind of relationships happen in real life but it is still strange. People talk about Brett being at dawsey’s wedding because it makes you realise that they weren’t just strangers who work together, they were really close.

I don’t want to say who was better friend. They both made so many mistakes. The last call when Brett left Gabby with a patient? They could be their worst enemies - the patient comes first! And yes, Brett for supporting Dawson when it came to her marriage, same as Dawson supported Brett when she thought she was pregnant with Antonio or when whole drama with Hope happened (Gabby backed Brett, not Stella and we know who was right).

But my biggest problem is saying that Brett and Casey are meant to be. Call it what you want, but this is a lie. Come on, before season 7 they barely talked to each other, Casey even said he didn’t want to know anything about Brett’s love life. Writers making Brett saying she loved him from the beginning? When he was in relationship with another woman? Didn’t she say she was happy for them? Make their story great, but don’t change the history of what happened on a show before 🤷🏼‍♀️ and Kara saying that Casey wasn’t the only one who didn’t ask her to compromise? He literally asked her to move to Portland with him after they dated for like six weeks 🤦🏼‍♀️ not to mention I was impressed that she decided to stay, that she didn’t want to change her life for a man and yet it’ll be her legacy after all, she moved for a man. Again 🤦🏼‍♀️

That being said I agree that the main problem might be Casey - Dawson and Brett both changed when they started dating him so maybe it’s all his fault 🤷🏼‍♀️

I agree with a couple of things of this, but disagree with the majority.

I really get annoyed with the molly's reception argument because it's Molly's. It's a staple of Chicago fire. And before it had a d*wsey reception there, it had a Plouch wedding, just re emphasizing it's a place that events for the 51 family happen.

And it's stated that they only have the reception there because they didn't have the proper aquarium venue, where if they did, that's where the reception would be held. So even then the argument barely holds any real weight.

I also disagree that they weren't meant to be together. Yes, say if you take them in season five, at that point in both of their lives, they were not. But that doesn't negate that they're meant to be together, it was just important for them to have that journey to get to that point. But one thing that remains true is that Sylvie has always respected Matt. I mean, you can't work at 51 without doing so.

And he literally never asked her to compromise. He was fine with her not moving to Portland. He never wanted or expected her to compromise who she is and what she wants. And she's NOT moving for a man, she's moving because it's right for her family.

Also misogynistic of you to say that despite you're disappointed she didn't stick with her original choice to say all while reducing her legacy to her relationship. Sylvie Brett's legacy will be her kindness, her strength, her love for 51, her adoption of Julia... these are all things that will be her legacy.

Right off the runway, few years back," Aderyn said as they walked towards the entrance. "I called in a big fucking favour from a dealer I know for this get-up. And it's going on expenses. Four hours – 'specially when I spent half of 'em driving – ain't nearly enough time to prep for a black tie gig. Where's 'Hels?" "Ms Kumar is inside. Be that as it may, you don't think it rather… garish for this kind of event?" Aderyn flicked an eye over the Fox's silver-grey Chinese silk suit, and the cream shirt and indigo cummerbund tucked under it. "It's a summer dress for a harvest event. No, I don't think it's too garish. Just cuz you're wedded to the aesthetic of a miserable winter's day don't mean the rest of us can't have fun at work." To Matt, it feels surreal to be standing at the end of the aisle.

It had taken them years to get to this point and as he pinches the inside of his wrist to make sure that he wasn't dreaming, he takes in their surroundings. It was a nice Spring day, not too cold, not too hot. They were in a garden, a small venue someone Sylvie knew recommended. It was the perfect place for their ceremony. There were tall trees all around providing ample shade. The seats were filled with their friends and family, all grinning in anticipation, waiting for the bride to arrive.

The road to getting married wasn't easy for Matt and Sylvie. There were a lot of bumps, or maybe more like roadblocks, along the way. They had spent the better part of three years apart due to Matt's commitment to the Dardens and had dodged an almost breakup the morning after Stella and Kelly's wedding. He wanted to kick himself when she looked at him sadly and he remembered how he told her he didn't know what was going to happen because while he didn't, he knew what he wanted to happen. He should have reassured her that while Portland was a nice place to live, one that had its own charm, it was never home because home was wherever Sylvie was and if she wanted to build roots in Chicago, he'd want that too.

He'd want anything with her because he was hopelessly, desperately in love with her. He told her everything that morning - how they would figure it out, how he loved her and still wanted to keep being them no matter how difficult it might get, how he was willing to put in the effort and show up for her because he knew she was the one.

It was all her could offer short of proposing on the spot. He wanted to but he knew it wasn't time yet.

Eventually, the right time did present itself once he moved back to Chicago. He snuck the ring in one of her coat pockets, the one she loved to wear in the winter and when she placed her lip balm in the pocket, she felt the small box. She pulled it out and looked at him like he grew three heads. He grinned before taking the box from her and opening it up, kneeling in front of her in the hallway of their apartment. He barely got the question out before he answer came, clear as a bell - yes.

It took a few more months longer to plan the wedding because life seemed to throw a few more curveballs their way, like a hospitalization in Matt's case and a long bout of the flu in Sylvie's but the day had finally arrived.

He takes a deep breath as soft music begins to play, signaling that Sylvie was about to walk down the aisle. He gazes as she walks, or maybe more like glides, his way in the arms of her father. She had on a simple white dress that shimmered when it caught the sunlight. Her hair was swept up in a low bun, not unlike the one she had during Stella and Kelly's wedding. Her eyes locked with his and he was glad that this was real life, that it was not merely a dream like the ones he used to have back in Oregon all the time.

He and Sylvie were about to be married and it was so much more than he could ask for. In all the things that have gone wrong in Matt's life, this was one of the few that finally went right.

Chicago-via-Madison quartet Slow Pulp released their newest offering "Doubt" this week. The single is lifted from their upcoming record Yard, which is set to release on September 29 via ANTI-. The laidback indie track spans just under 2.5 minutes long and the lush instrumentals add the perfect touch of summer. While the lyrics tackle self-doubt and looking to others to validate our own insecurities, the instrumental brings a brightness that pairs uniquely well.

“In my process to fight against self-deprecation, I found this strange new pattern popping up where I fished for critiques from others,” says lead singer Emily Massey. “I wanted people close to me to validate the things I hated about myself. Self-doubt had found a home in me, it felt safer to stay in this familiar negative space than to like myself. I thought if others shared that with me I wouldn’t have to do the work to change.”
