Down In the Forest
Summary: Dan Howell is the heir to the throne in his kingdom, due to marry and take the seat within the year. However, he doesn't want that. Running away to the clearing outside of his kingdom every night, he meets Phil, who is from a neighboring kingdom. As Dan develops feelings for Phil, he realizes that his crush on Phil is actually problematic in more ways than one.

A/N: This is my second fic written for the @phandomreversebang! It was based on the prompt by @2easy2hate which was essentially a royal vampire!dan au which I thought was super interesting to try and do! My beta for this fic was @hiddenpastry and they were so helpful and encouraging with my procrastination haha I have plans to release an epilogue in the next few weeks where it'll have a glimpse into the future which Val and I agreed will help to tie up whatever may be 'loose' at this end of this one shot.
The forest was a sacred place for Dan Howell. He wasn’t exactly sure why he felt so calm being here, but he did. The sound of the leaves bristling in the wind and the distance chirps of birds were calming. He was used to coming here as soon as he was done with his studies for the day, after the sun had set and no harm would be done to his sensitive skin.
Today was no different for him. Notebook in hand, and bag slung across his body, he trudged through the grass, past the trees, to the small clearing where he took refuge from the day. He chose this place when he was just a child, after fighting with his parents over his obligations.
His first lesson of the day was writing, then it was history, and finally it was his lessons on moral obligations as the heir of his kingdom. He had a list of rules he had to have memorized before he became heir on his 18th birthday...less than a year away. It was a rule in their kingdom that the eldest son takes over as soon as they turn 18 years of age. It was also a rule that 6 months before they take the throne, they need to be married...but Dan didn’t want to think of that. Especially when his first “party” to find his future wife was in less than a week.
That’s partly why Dan ran away at night, after he was dismissed by his teachers. He enjoyed coming here where he could write in his notebook and get immersed in his own little world, where none of this existed and he could be a normal teenager. Not the heir to the most successful kingdom in modern history.
Dan sat down on the grass, leaning back and resting against the tree behind him. He propped his legs up and opened his bag against his side, taking out his notebook. It was getting well-worn, well-used. But that didn’t bother Dan. Not as he opened to the halfway point of the pages and went back to the story he was writing.
He’ll remain here until his hunger gets the better of him, and he’ll have to go back to his kingdom, back to his castle, to feed.
Because that’s one of the rules of the Vaedian Kingdom: you never feed in public.
It’s not uncommon for the people living around the kingdom to know that the Howells had unusual habits. That’s what they say anyway. Dan didn’t realize he was different until he was taught about it...about his immortal abilities.
Maybe as a child, Dan should have known that when his hunger reached a peak, it wasn’t normal to suddenly have glowing red eyes or sharp teeth that jutted out of his gums. But to his family, it was normal. His entire family was this way, so there was no reason for Dan to be any different.
At the thought of food, his stomach grumbles and Dan ignores it, instead he looks down at his notebook and rereads over the last line he had written down. He doesn’t even know what this story is anymore. It’s more like a stream of consciousness, a way for him to gather his thoughts about his ever changing life as he grows older.
He reaches into his bag and pulls out his pen and begins to scribble down the next parts of his story. He lets his hand and his mind interconnect and even just writes until he can’t anymore.
The moonlight is coming down on him, brighter than it was before. The stars in the sky are illuminating everything around him and he supposes that this is the time he should start heading back.
He packs up his notebook and his pen and slowly stands up, stretching from sitting down so long in such a cramped position. He adjusts his clothing and his bag against his hip and begins the short journey back home, where he’ll have a snack and then go lay down in his bed chamber.
***
“Prince Daniel, you were out late last night?”
Dan looks up from his school work to his servant Johnathon in front of him. He’s got a drink in his hand, and he’s setting it in front of Dan. The dark maroon color is enough to make Dan’s stomach swoon at the thought of indulging in it’s glorious taste. He takes the glass and picks it up, taking a long sip and letting the copper taste sit on his tongue.
“If I may ask, your highness, but what do you partake in when you go out at night after your studies?”
“I go to the clearing and write in my notebook,” Dan answers honestly. He can trust Johnathon. He’s been the family servant for literally hundreds of years and he remains as loyal and as faithful to the Howell family and the Vaedian Kingdom as they come.
“What are you writing about?” Johnston asks, “Practicing your writing skills for when you have to make ceremonial statements?”
Dan shakes his head and takes another sip, “I just write.”
“Stories?”
“Sort of,” Dan replies.
He finishes the last of the drink from the glass and sets it back down. Johnathon picks up the glass out of habit. Dan goes back to his school work, finishing up his copying of the 15 Moral Obligations of Vaedian. He only has one through 4 memorized, and he knows his teacher is going to be after him about it today. He’s trying to memorize as many as he can but the problem is that they are so pointless and boring that Dan really can’t find the will to actually give a damn about any of them.
But if he told this to his teacher, or to his father, he would be immediately cast as being traitorous to the kingdom by being the heir and not adhering to the basic standards.
They’ve been around for millennia and Dan frankly just feels like they’re outdated. Maybe when he’s king he can rewrite some of them. But he doesn’t even know if that’s allowed. Somehow he feels like that is even more frowned upon.
“Your brow is furrowed,” Johnathon says suddenly, pointing to the space between Dan’s eyebrows. “Keep doing that and you’ll no longer be a young prince, but you’ll look older than your father.”
Dan lets out a laugh and Johnathon smiles back before turning on his heels and heading out of the living chamber towards the kitchen.
Speaking of his father, Dan knows he has a meeting with him soon about the party where he’ll be meeting his potential wife. But he really is dreading the entire thing, if he’s being honest. He doesn’t want to go through with any that, and for a multitude of reasonings...all of which are frowned upon.
The clock on the mantel suddenly chimes that it’s one and Dan gathers his belongings and stuffs them into his bag before flinging it over his shoulder. He makes his way to the library where his studies will begin soon and he tries to ignore that heaviness in his feet.
Dan has his meeting with his father following his school time, but he wasn’t entirely shocked by that. He knew it was coming when Johnathon found him in the library and told him he needed to report to his father's office as soon as he was done.
It’s even less shocking that when Dan gets there, his father immediately presents him with a series of photos of the various daughters from the neighboring kingdoms and begins to talk to Dan about how he needs to decide on what one he wants to pursue.
Naturally, none of the girls appealed to Dan. But yet again, none of them were going to anyway when he had a natural inclination to prefer men instead. But somehow, he still found himself being bound by the outdated rules of the kingdom and he pointed to the picture of a brunette girl who’s name was written as “Julianna” underneath. His father seemed to like that choice and waved him off as being able to leave now.
So Dan did, back to the clearing where he always went.
He double checked before he left that his notebook was still in his bag and he grabbed a few extra pens as the ink in the one from the night before seemed to be dulling. He intended to spend as long as possible out in his clearing without any disturbance from any of his obligations.
As he passed by the last set of trees and started to walk into the clearing, he immediately stopped in his tracks at the sight of another person that already had beat him there.
His first reaction was to get angry, because this was his secret spot and how dare a person find it without Dan’s permission. He wanted this spot all to himself with no one else here.
But as the future heir, he knew deep down that he couldn’t act that way. And instead when the male looked up, Dan just met his eyes as a look of shock overcame them both.
“I’m sorry,” Dan begins, “but how did you find this place?”
The male set down his notebook in front of him and Dan looked down long enough to notice it was a drawing of a flower. The male was here to draw just like Dan was here to write.
“I just went wandering in the forest and I happened to see this clearing,” The male says. “I didn’t intend for anyone to know about this.”
“Are you drawing?”
The male picks up his notebook, almost like he’s self-conscious about Dan calling him out, and nods, “I don’t have a space to draw without being distracted and being here has been working wonders to ease my block.”
“So you don’t mind that I join you as you draw?” Dan asks.
The male shakes his head, “No, not at all.”
Dan walks into the space and sits down on the opposite side from the man. He takes out his notebook and flips open the pages to where he left off. He fishes in his bag for a pen and pulls it out, uncapping it with his teeth. When he gets ready to write, the voice from the other side interrupts him, “Can I get your name?”
If Dan had a beating heart, he was sure it would suddenly begin to beat fast. But because he doesn't, he was instead subjected to just an overwhelming feeling of anxiety as he thought about the idea of this man knowing who he might be.
It was common for the commoners around them in their kingdom to know the royal family, and to know their names. But it was uncommon for them to know what the royal family looked like. The only time the royal family opened the castle walls was for the lavish parties and the crowning ceremonies.
By the time those events happen, most people don’t even remember what they looked like because they’ve changed. In reality, the royal family is immortal, but their aging is a different story.
“My name is Daniel,” he finally says.
“I’m Philip,” the man introduces himself, “but I prefer to be called Phil.”
Dan smiles. “Then you can call me Dan.”
Phil smiles back at him and Dan feels something that’s akin to a blush.
They mostly sit in silence, both of them working on their own art before Phil yawns and stands up and announces he should head back home. When Dan goes to say goodbye, Phil makes the sudden announcement that they should walk home together to the village.
Dan doesn’t want to tell Phil about him just yet, and so he quickly says he’s going to stay for awhile and they can walk back together another time. At the mention of another time, Phil smiles and asks, “So you’re going to be here again?”
Dan just nods and says, “I come here every night.”
Dan eventually does make his way back, and it’s even later tonight than it was the night before. When he passes through the castle gates and makes his way inside, he’s greeted by Johnathon who gives him another glass of that delicious red liquid. He takes it with him to his bed chambers and sips it through the night.
Dan technically doesn’t need to sleep. He doesn’t feel tired, he just feels lethargic if he’s used too much of his energy. So after he finishes his glass, and sets it in the hallway for Johnathon to grab when he makes his midnight rounds, Dan just lays in bed and closes his eyes.
Sometimes that’s all he needs to feel anything until the sun comes through his curtains and he has to retreat to the living chamber where he works on his studies until his schooling time comes.
***
His mum stops him the next morning after Dan gets up from his bed. She tells him that they have to talk about his party and Dan reluctantly agrees to follow her to her office where she has plans laid out about every detail.
“We’ll bring in the finest pastry chefs to the kingdom for you,” she begins. “All of the cakes that you can think of will be there.”
“How many people are coming?” Dan asks.
“Well, we’re not opening the grand hall up for nothing, my dear Daniel,” she scolds. “So your father sent special invites to all of the kingdoms around us, with a select few going to some families in the village.”
“We’re allowing villagers to the party?” Dan asks, because he’s truly astounded by this fact.
“Of course!” his mother says. “Commoners are always invited to the parties where the heir finds his wife. It’s a status symbol that you should have learnt about in your lessons. Do I need to have a word with Lady Mallory about your studies?”
Dan shakes his head and immediately refuses the proposition, “No, there is no need.”
His mum gives him a stern look and goes back to discussing the plans.
Dan has to admit that parties in the grand hall are few and far between. He actually only believes that his family has only ever had one party there in his lifetime. Other than that, it remains closed to everyone, including them.
By the end of the meeting, Dan’s proper exhausted and even though he has to go to his studies, he would rather retreat to his bedchamber where he can sit and wait for the sun to go down so he can head to the clearing and meet up with Phil again.
Dan doesn’t even know why his mind immediately goes to meeting up with Phil. He’s only met the guy once and even if they did seem to get on rather quickly, there shouldn’t be a reason for Dan wanting to be with him so quickly again.
But yet, he finds his mind wandering to Phil and his raven locks and blue eyes instead. Lady Mallory calls him out on his distractedness but Dan brushes it off as just being a rough day, not because he was daydreaming about another man.
When the lessons are over, Dan doesn't immediately leave to go to the clearing. He goes to the kitchen first and grabs a snack to hold him over. Johnathon hands him a blood cake when he gets there, and Dan immediately partakes in eating it despite the bitter taste it leaves on his tongue.
The blood is getting old now, a bit stale. Dan can tell right away. The taste is nowhere near that fresh copper taste that he loves so much. The grimace that he gives off is enough for Johnathon to speak up, “They’re going on a fresh hunt tonight, my lord. You’ll have new nutrients tomorrow.”
Dan just nods and finishes the rest of his cake before asking for a glass as well and gulping it down.
The sun is way past set when he makes his way to the clearing with his bag slung across his body. He’s half expecting for Phil to not be there, because for mortals, this is late at night. For Dan, it’s really just a beginning for him.
But he still feels a spark of happiness when he moves into the clearing and sees Phil sat in the same position he was in the night before. He’s concentrating hard in his sketchbook, busy working on another piece that Dan is actually a bit curious to see.
Phil looks up and greets him before he can sit down. When Dan finally does settle down, he chooses a spot beside Phil because he’s feeling a bit better about having him here with Dan in the clearing. In a way, it’s making everything feel less lonely even though Dan used to come here for the sole fact that he wanted to be alone, away from everything.
“Dan,” Phil says out of the blue, “have you ever been to a party at the castle?”
Dan suddenly picks his head up, nervous about actually answering the question because he’s afraid he’ll give too much away, “No, I haven’t. Why do you ask?”
“I’m from another kingdom...Vargaria, and not even supposed to be here. But my father was naturally invited to the royal party. While I’ve attended some of the royal parties my father has hosted, I don’t know what it’ll be like to attend the party at this kingdom. If my father knew I was here, he would more than likely disown me.”
Dan suddenly doesn’t like that. He doesn't like knowing Phil is going to be attending the party and seeing him pick his future wife that he doesn't even want, nor love. Furthermore, he doesn’t know how to feel at the thought of Phil admitting to him that he was from a neighboring kingdom, especially Vargaria. Dan knew firsthand that Vargaria and Vaedian have very tense relations.
Everything about this almost feels wrong, like they’re breaching a line of boundaries in their newly found acquaintanceship that shouldn’t be breached.
“What do you think it’s going to be like?” Phil suddenly adds, not letting Dan say anything in regards to his previous admission.
“I’m assuming lavish,” Dan says. “Lots of people, decorations. Fancy dresses and food.”
“Did your family get invited as well?” Phil asks.
Dan doesn’t know how to answer that. Because if he says no, that’s an obvious lie but if he says yes, then how does he handle the situation without giving anything about himself away?
“I don't think so,” he says, immediately feeling regret cloud his mind.
“Oh that’s a shame,” Phil says. “Would have been nice to at least know one person who is there. I feel like I’m going to be horribly out of place.”
“I will be too,” Dan mumbles.
Phil looks up. “What was that?”
Dan stiffens. “I said I would be too.”
Phil just nods and gives him a sympathetic look and goes back to his drawing in silence.
They don’t say much else, which Dan finds fine because the conversation took a turn anyway and he feels it might be rather awkward to continue it and also keep his identity intact.
When Dan returns back to his bed chambers that night, all he can think about is how he shouldn’t have any further contact with Phil. By rule, they’re supposed to remain civil with their relations with each other from the neighboring kingdoms but Dan still knows that this casual of a relationship is frowned upon.
Sitting at his desk and looking out of his window towards the valley and village beneath them, he sighed. Technically speaking, Phil is meant to be an enemy to him. He shouldn’t be doing this. He shouldn’t even be looking forward to meeting up with him in the clearing any further.
Nothing of this sort can happen any more. Dan’s putting a stop to it now.
But then that means that Dan will have to give up his writing spot and that thought makes him a bit sad. He can always find a new one, he supposes. But it won’t be the same.
So Dan doesn’t return to the clearing for 3 full nights. He instead remains home and sits at his desk, unbothered with the window open, and tries to write there instead. He doesn’t get nearly as far in his story as he did when he was in the clearing, but he can’t afford to go there anymore.
It’s not until a final meeting with his father finally snaps him that he decides to go back there, needing and wanting to just get away and put an ending to all of this. He doesn’t want any of this. He wants to remain unbothered. He doesn’t want a lavish party. He doesn’t want to be married. And furthermore, he doesn’t want to be king!
When he gets to the clearing, running as fast as he can, he’s met immediately by Phil, whose expression was less than welcoming. “Why did you lie to me?”
“Lie to you about what?” Dan asks.
“You’re Prince Daniel,” Phil says, “Heir to the Vaedian throne and it’s your party that I’m attending this weekend.”
Dan opens and closes his mouth a few times, “How did you find out?”
Phil turns his head, “My father has warned us about you,” he spits out. “Your kingdom is built on a throne of lies.”
“And I don’t suppose yours isn’t?” Dan snaps back.
“I made a mistake befriending you,” Phil snarls. “My father warned me of you from a young age and I feel half-dumb that I didn’t see through you in the first place.”
Dan doesn’t know what to say or how to react. He’s never been in an altercation like this before and it’s frankly extremely unnerving.
“You can’t even speak for yourself,” Phil says, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I don’t have anything to say to you,” Dan spits back. “The kingdoms of Vargaria and Vaedian have always been tense. I should have known from the first mention of your kingdom that this was nothing but trouble.”
“That’s tough speak for someone who intends to marry my sister,” Phil presses. “I was told today that you’re planning on marrying Julianna.”
Dan’s memory snaps back to the name of the kingdom on the bottom of the picture of Julianna and he suddenly feels a bit ill. He didn’t even know that’s what he’d chosen but maybe that’s why his father had seemed so pleased with himself.
“You’re not marrying her, and our kingdoms are not going to be united by the bloody hands of you.”
With that, Phil turned on his heels and walked away, leaving Dan feeling anger beyond anything that he has ever felt before.
How could he ever think that Phil was ever a decent person? Surely his first mistake was trusting a stranger anyway.
When Dan walks back to the castle that night, he feels an overwhelming sense of dread, and he finds himself resting in bed the entirety of the following day.
***
“The party is in two days, Daniel, and you’ve hardly done anything in preparation for it.”
Dan looked down at his notebook that was poised open in front of him to avoid the unwavering gaze of his mother as she hounded him about this. He didn’t want to go through this lecture again. It’s one that he’s gone through three separate times now over the past day.
“I wasn’t aware I had any preparations to do,” Dan snapped back.
His mother rolled her eyes and tossed up her hands, almost in defeat. “Well, have you ever sent a letter to Julianna of Vargaria?” She asked. “The kingdom has sent a letter on your behalf but you should have known to send the letter yourself as well.”
“I wasn’t aware of that.”
“Good Lord, Daniel! What has gotten into you?” His mother finally snapped. “We have been preparing for this day for almost 18 years and you’re about to ruin it all. I don’t understand where your attitude has gone these past few years. You’ve turned into a snub-nosed little brat!”
Dan flinched at the insult, trying to not let it get to him. So many thoughts ran through his head. Like how his parents lied to him for so many years. How they never actually cared about him, just about their kingdom and its reputation. About how they hid who he really was until he was old enough to realize that he’s been born into a kingdom of vampires amongst humans.
Finally, with the tip of his tongue clicking against the back of his teeth, he spits out, “I don’t want to marry and I don’t want the throne.”
He slams his notebook shut and gets up to leave when the feeling of her hand on his wrist in a tight grip stops him. He whips his head back, staring at her aggravated expression.
“You’re not leaving right now,” she says.
“I have nothing more to say right now,” Dan says back, trying to remain calm but his demeanor failing quickly.
She lets him go and he quickly rushes out of her office, ignoring how deafening the silence from her was to his ears when he heard no more cries of protest leave her.
His eyes gathered with tears and he fought to keep them back as he desperately wished more than ever that he was never born into this life. He should have never been born as a royal and he should have never been born immortal. He would have much rather loved to have been a commoner who receives one life and then gets spared the rest of eternity.
Before he knows it, he’s ran back to his secret clearing. Dan stood there, his chest heaving and his eyes watering heavier as he lost his battle and unleashed the sobs that wracked his frame.
“Oh what does the prince of bloodsuckers have to cry about today?”
Dan picks up his head and sees Phil sitting there, drawing away in his sketchbook again. Dan honestly wishes he would have never encountered him again but it’s clear that luck did not work in his way.
“Don’t you have somewhere else to go?” Dan asks. “Somewhere maybe in your own kingdom?”
Phil just shrugs and looks back down at his sketchbook, “It’s easier to be here than it is to be back home.”
Dan sits down on the grass and wipes away the wetness from his cheeks. He should be embarrassed crying this much over something as stupid as the mention of the rest of his life. He should feel embarrassed for the fact that he was crying in front Phil after what had just happened between them.
But another part of him just doesn’t care anymore. He doesn’t care about any of this. He wants everything to just cease around him and end but it’s never that simple. It’ll never be that simple as long as Dan is immortal and the world around them still passes like normal.
“Why were you so nice to me when we first met?” Dan finds himself asking.
Phil shrugs again and doesn’t speak.
“What made you change when you found out who I was?”
The curiosity was getting to Dan, not just because this was Phil, but because his mother's words were still eating away at his core but he also felt like maybe it was a bit rebellious to speak to the kingdom he’s supposed to be marrying someone from.
Phil looks up and Dan sees his expression quickly change from hardened to confusion. He blinks a few times and then finally speaks, “Does it really matter?”
Dan wipes the remaining wetness from his cheeks and shrugs because no, it really doesn’t. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to know. He does want to know why in a way.
“So what are you drawing today?” Dan asks.
Phil turns the sketchbook around and shows him an array of flowers and trees. It’s actually really beautiful. But Dan doesn’t want to stroke his ego and tell him so after their outbursts.
They sit in silence for a while, and eventually Phil leaves without saying a word. Dan supposes that wasn’t all that painful. In a way, he did see Phil as a sort of new friend when everything was just beginning with them. So for him to be seen that way again in a new light wasn’t all that bad.
His stomach is rumbling by the time he finally gets up to make his way back home. He’s feeling a bit lethargic, and his skin a bit inflamed. And it’s only when he’s back in the castle and he falls to his knees while Johnathon grabs him, that he realizes he was just in the sun for a little bit with nothing to eat.
In that respect, he almost got his wish that everything would just end.
***
It’s the morning of the party and Dan wants nothing more than to leave and run away. He doesn’t want to make an appearance in front of everyone while he meets Julianna for the first time. He still only has a vague knowledge of what she looks like, just based on the photo that he was presented with for her.
And what’s worse is that all he could see was Phil in her features.
Dan wishes that he could forget about Phil. He knows that he needs to, but yet he can’t stop thinking about his special spot and seeing Phil there every time that he’s gone for the last few trips.
They got along so well when they first met, and Dan really does deep down want to be friends with Phil. He’s not even sure why his heart is telling him that it’s the right thing to do but yet, he does feel deep down that it is.
He’s confused.
Dan’s known for as long as he’s been able to freely think that he wasn’t attracted to women. He much preferred men. It’s something that he’s had to keep a secret, but he did tell Johnathon in pure confidence when the overwhelming urge of shame for his kingdom overtook him one night when he was told about the marriage.
Now that he was actually being forced to marry for the good of the kingdom, his memories of the days where he used to dread this are now here. He’s stood in front of his wardrobe, with his ceremonial garb hung in front of him. Tears are gathering in the corner of his eyes and he’s realizing now that he can’t back out from this.
A knock on his bedroom door shakes him out of his head and he wipes away the tears with the back of his head as he yells an airy, “it’s open” towards the door.
His door slowly opens and Johnathon walks in, a glass on a tray balanced on his hand, “You were looking a bit peckish earlier, Daniel. So I brought you a fresh drink to hopefully give you some more life.”
Dan lets out a small laugh as he walks towards him and takes the glass in his hand, indulging in the coppery taste on his lips. Nothing will ever be better than fresh blood, but it’s unfortunate in the fact that it’s in high demand: it’s not all that plentiful.
“Where did this come from?”
“A freshly hunted deer from just a few hours past.”
Dan nods and finishes the rest of the drink in one gulp. He hands Johnathon back the glass and wipes the excess liquid off from his lips with his hand.
“Are you ready for this evening?” Johnathon asks him, the question seemingly out of the blue.
Dan shakes his head, “I don’t think all the years in the world would ever make me prepared for this evening.”
“It’s not your royal marriage ceremony, you know,” Johnathan says in sympathy. “It’s just meeting a potential wife. You can still turn her down if you feel like she is not fit for you. There will be plenty of other suitors who will love to…”
“Johnathan, you know that I don’t want to marry a woman,” Dan says.
“But I’m afraid you have no choice.”
“I’m aware,” Dan answers back, his words catching in his throat, “but I’m afraid that I think I have many fallen in love with someone else.”
“And who might this person be?” Johnathan asks.
“A man.”
***
The party is in full swing. Everyone is in extravagant gowns and Dan, looking down at the guests from the balcony of the dining hall, can see how fancy everyone looks. Dan casts his glance around the perimeter, seeing if he can spot who he’s looking for. And sure enough, stood with a drink in his hand was none other than Phil, laughing with what appeared to be his sister, Julianna.
Dan’s due to make his way down the grand staircase in just a few moments. During this time, he’ll be expected to walk down the stairs, stop at the end, and extend his hand out to Lady Julianna. He’ll talk her hand, they’ll walk to the middle of the dining room, where the guests are mingling, and will perform their first dance together. If Dan likes what he sees and what he’s been presented with, he can then announce at the end he has chosen to marry her.
But Dan already knows he’s going to turn her down.
Dan’s not sure when he fully came to the conclusion that he, deep down, was actually falling for Phil. Maybe it came when he realized he couldn’t stop thinking about him. Or when he couldn’t stop thinking about how well they got along before they realized who each other were.
Or maybe it’s a deep seated need inside of Dan’s core to just say fuck the system and to do what he wants to. Which is not only marry a man but also marry someone he shouldn’t even be marrying.
In some convoluted way, he’s halfway there if he marries Julianna.
Just then, the music slowly starts and Dan feels an ache in his chest that surely would be his heart thumping if it actually beat. He squeezes his fingers in his palms and slowly moves into the view of the bottom of the staircase where everyone is gathered around, staring up at him. He hates the attention. More than anything else, he just wants to hide and be away from everyone's center of sight.
His mother and father are stood at the foot of the stairs with Julianna standing in between them and everyone else standing behind. Julianna looks beautiful, Dan can’t even disprove that. Her features are stunning and her dark hair is cascading so nicely over the shoulders of her dress. Dan almost feels bad knowing he’s not going to actually marry her.
He descends the stairway and makes it to the bottom where he takes Julianna’s outstretched hand and leads her to the center of the ballroom. They make eye contact and Dan sees her beautiful blue eyes staring back at him with intent, a smile on her lips.
When he looks at her, all he can imagine is Phil...and he feels a bit sick.
Dan loses eye contact with her halfway through their dance. But that could also be because he keeps stepping on her toes and he knows that she’s flinching and giving him some looks but really, he can’t be assed to change the way he’s stepping. He doesn’t want to be here so why would he focus on doing a perfect first dance?
The music stops and he bows and she curtsies back. They turn to the crowd and bow again as everyone applauds. He turns back to her and gives her a quick smile before separating from her and rushing away.
He’s only just arrived to the party and he already can’t stand to be there for any longer. He wants out. He wants to leave, to not be there anymore. He grabs at the collar of his top and rips open the buttons, letting the fabric fall open, exposing his neck to the cool night air.
Dan’s running out of the kingdom now, and he’s not looking back. He’s never used his fast speed before for anything other than some gimmicks when he was a kid, but now he’s running as fast as he can to the clearing. When he gets there, he stops short and collapses to the forest floor, tears running down his face.
He’ll have to leave his kingdom now. He can’t go back there. He’s made a fool out of everyone...including himself. What was he thinking running away like that?
Oh right...because Dan can’t marry Julianna when he’s in love with her brother. Like the pathetic person he is, he’s going to spend the rest of his immortal days pining over a guy who hates him and who Dan should hate back but can’t.
He furiously rubs away the tears from his eyes and takes a shuddering breath as he tries to calm himself down. He can survive in the forest, Dan supposes. He’s never had to hunt for his subsistence before but he can surely do it. He’s just gotta catch a deer or two, right?
God, he’s never gonna be able to make it. He should have never ran away.
“What a performance.”
Dan looked up and followed where the voice was coming from. Phil was stood next to a tree, his arms folded over his chest. Dan didn’t really want to face him right now. He just wanted to be as far away from any of Phil’s family and kingdom as he could be after humiliating himself with Julianna.
“If it makes you feel any better, Julianna didn’t like you either,” Phil says with a chuckle.
“How bad is it?” Dan asks, the words catching in his throat.
“Everyone is a bit chaotic but I left in the midst of it all,” Phil says, walking forward and then taking a seat next to Dan.
“I figured.”
“I don’t blame you,” Phil says. “My family is wanting me to marry someone as well but I can’t find the reason to want to.”
“Yeah…” Dan says, “I just do not fancy…”
Dan stops himself and looks at Phil who is studying him with wide eyes.
“You’re attracted to men?” Phil says, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world.
Dan hides his face and then picks it back up and nods slowly.
“I am too,” Phil says softly.
They sit in silence, and Dan feels like he can cut the tension with a knife. He’s never been in a situation or a conversation like this before. It was a bit daunting and a bit terrifying all at the same time. He didn’t know what to think or how to react.
“When I first met you, I was really happy to find someone that was like me,” Phil says. “In my Kingdom, I was the outcast. I never fit into what anyone else was doing. That’s why I came here to draw. Being here was like an escape from that and when we started meeting up, I genuinely felt like I was meeting someone just like me.”
Dan felt the same way. He could never put into words how he felt about meeting Phil but this was exactly it. Meeting Phil felt the same way for him. Maybe that’s why he took a liking to Phil so quickly?
“I felt the same way,” Dan says. “I really liked being able to just sit here with you.”
Suddenly, a hand is coming up and touching Dan’s cool skin. His chin is being tilted to the side and Dan follows the lead as he comes face to face with Phil. Phil leans in and presses their lips together in a burning kiss. Phil’s lips felt so warm in comparison to his.
When Phil pulls back, Dan stares at him, not sure what to do. Phil just laughs, “Your lips are cold.”
Dan just laughs and shakes his head, “Comes with the whole...package.”
They sit in the clearing for a while longer until Dan can hear his name being called by Jonathan and he figures he needs to actually go back and face whatever consequences are bearing his name. He makes his way back to the castle but not before sharing another quick kiss with Phil and then saying goodbye as they both leave.
At the castle, Dan is yelled at and cursed at and then banished to his sleeping chamber which he knew was going to happen anyway. When he gets to his room, he strips down and dresses into his nightgowns and slips into the seat at his desk. He opens up his notebook that he’s been writing in and he writes down the words:
I love Phil from Vargaria

A/N: This is my 3rd and final fic for the @phandomreversebang! I had a lot of fun writing this prompt and I hope you all find it just as cute too! The fic was beta read by @masoncore and the art was by @phantasticphun! I have a few more fics coming (one for phandom gives) and then my PBB fic in the fall. I hope you all have enjoyed all of the pieces from the PRB this year!
Phil had just left for the weekend, which was completely normal. Dan was used to him leaving to go to his parents and with Phil’s mum’s birthday coming up, he knew that it made sense for Phil to leave to go and visit them.
Phil had asked Dan to go, but Dan had refused this time because he was busy working on his finishing touches on his new project: a poetry book that told the story of life. It had taken, the better part of the last two years to write, so with the publishing so close, he was putting all effort possible into making it as best as he can.
But there was also a problem with this. Dan hated being home alone. He was scared of the dark, so night was especially a challenge. He’s pretty much learnt how to sleep with a light on at this point, which...he doesn’t mind all that much but he wakes up completely exhausted.
It was day two of Phil being gone, and day two of having this new sleeping routine. He wakes up completely drained, his eyes feeling cottony and a migraine beginning to take residence in his temple from exhaustion.
He swings the duvet off from his body and slowly starts to get up, stretching out his limbs that had stiffened from the tense position he had been in trying to sleep and ward off any intruders. He shuffles to the bathroom and relieves himself and then turns on the shower to a cold setting and strips down, getting inside.
The cool water feels like pricks to his skin but it works in waking him up more. He shivers a bit, and washes the cold over his face and his eyes feel less cloudy. He washes his hair and then washes down his body and steps back out, wrapping a towel around his waist and another around his head. He’s taken Phil’s habit of multiple towels as the years have gone by and Phil will pick on him. But really the jokes on both of them when they get too lazy to do the laundry and suddenly all of their towels are dirty.
When Dan walks back into the bedroom, he sits down on the edge of the bed and ruffles through the duvet for his phone because he has a bad habit of falling asleep without putting it on the chargeer. When he finds it, he unlocks it and looks over his messages and emails that are lighting up his screen.
Two are from Phil, which is unsurprising. The messages are telling Dan that he dropped his cereal in the kitchen and his mum banished him into the living room and the other one is that Martyn doesn't come down for the weekend too. So Dan just shoots back a reply and then scrolls the rest of the way through his notifications until he sees a text from Bryony asking if he wants to go out to lunch at Nando’s. He hasn’t been to Nando’s in well over two years, but at the thought he suddenly craved it and sent her back a text telling her he could.
Deciding he needed to get his ass into gear, Dan got back up and strolled to his closet. He opened the curtains and pushed them aside to see the array of black clothing on the hangers in front of him. It was almost comical actually when he looked to the left and saw Phil’s array of colors compared to his monochrome.
He goes with his normal striped sweater and a pair of black skinny jeans. He grabs a black cap and puts that on his hair to cover the unruly mop that it’s become. He needs a haircut desperately but he hasn’t made an appointment with his hairdresser. He and Phil normally do that at the same time so he’ll wait for Phil to get back home to do that.
Bryony texts him back and he calls for a taxi  and starts heading downstairs to meet it.
***
Lunch was good as always, but yet again, he never has a bad lunch with Bryony. They’ve always been close, as far back as Dan can remember. So every time he meets up with her, it’s always fun. Bryony will talk about her newest KPOP fascination and Dan will waffle on about his new obsession with The Real Housewives of Orange County, because damn it there is something about that show that just grabs him.
But now, it’s only half past one and he’s not sure what to do with the rest of his day. The weather, when he looks into the sky, looks a bit grey, but that’s normal. Although, he doesn’t want to get stuck in the rain if he decides to do something outside...which is already unlikely.
Dan folds his arms over his chest and hurries his strides down the pavement. He’s close to their flat, not too far now from the building. So he continues on his way, passing by the little shops and other apartments along the way.
As he passes by the park on his right, he hears a noise that stops him in his tracks. It sounds almost like a dog panting, but the noise also doesn’t sound like that at all. He sees a small bush of flowers down by his feet and he bends down, looking at it.
He shouldn’t look at it, he thinks, because he doesn’t know what is there. But there is someone drawing him in. Just as he peeks over the grass, his eyes come into contact with something he had never seen before.
It looked like a baby dragon, straight out a Game of Thrones episode. He stumbles back, falling on his ass on the pavement. Dan looks around, noting that no one is around and it’s like he’s the only one even in the area. That’s weird in and of itself.
It’s starts walking out from behind the bushes now, it’s little tail wobbling behind it and it’s wings extended away from its body. Its scales were blue and purple, shining quite prettily in the afternoon glow. Dan didn’t know what to do though. This felt like a weird fever dream.
Surely, dragons aren't real? They were just mythical creatures but…
Dan notices a note sitting on the pavement next to the little creature. It was a white piece of paper, but Dan could see something written on it. He picks it up, because maybe this will tell what exactly is happening with this little creature that Dan swears can’t be real and he’s seeing hallucinations.
“Be Careful of Who You Trust”
Dan read the note over and over again in his head. What could that possibly mean? That sounds like a threat...but also not like a threat. Dan’s confused. He doesn’t know what it means. He doesn’t know what to do.
Does he turn this into the police? What about an animal shelter? Do places like that even take dragons? What about an exotic animal pet store?
The little creature looked up at Dan, it’s eyes so big and wide that it was almost comical. As Dan reached down, his hand extended in a gesture like a puppy to let it stuff him, it’s nostrils flared and it huffed out a puff of smoke.
Dan slowly stands back up, and backs up slightly, but the dragon waddles towards him, following him like a lost puppy. Now Dan knows he’s in trouble. What is he going to do? He stuffs the note in his pocket and looks around. There was still no one around the area.
“Hi little buddy,” Dan finds himself saying in a calm, gentle manner.
The dragon’s tail begins to swing back and forth excitedly behind it.
“Where did you come from?” He mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand.
Maybe he should just leave and call the animal shelter as soon as he gets back to his flat. But he can’t leave this animal here. That would be inhumane to do. He needs to help out the creature in any way possible. But how does one take care of a dragon?
Up until now, Dan didn’t even know they were real.
Just as Dan begins to back up again, the sound of footsteps sound down the pavement from him and he turns his head to see a woman walking his way. He has just a few seconds to make up his mind, so without thinking too much, he bends down and takes the creature in his arms and bolts towards his flat.
The creature is squirming a bit, it’s tail hitting Dan’s cheek as Dan tries to run without seeing anyone. Because how can he explain to a random person why he’s carrying a dragon in his arms?
He’s not far from his flat so getting there isn’t that much of a hassle, but as he gets out his keys from his pocket, holding the dragon in his arms like a puppy, he realizes just the situation he has gotten himself into and begins to panic.
Can he even take this creature into their flat? Can it breathe fire? Will something happen to it? Will something happen to Dan? What does he even feed it?
He lets out a sigh and looks down at the dragon. For all intents and purposes, it seems friendly really. If Dan didn’t know any better, which being real he doesn’t, he would think it was smiling at him, wagging it’s tail and flapping it’s wings.
It looked almost excited.
“What am I going to do with you?” Dan asks and the dragon stares up at him with a cocked head. Dan sighs and opens the door to the flat, and walks inside. He sets the dragon down on the floor and almost immediately, it flaps its wings and begins to try and fly.
Dan’s eyes widened and he reached out, catching it in mid-air, “Oh no! You are not flying around in here.”
The dragon seemed to huff in annoyance of being reprimanded.
Dan gently set it back on the floor and looked at it. He had no idea what he was going to do now, “Do you eat food?”
As soon as Dan says anything, he facepalms because of course the animal eats food. Every living being does. But what does this creature eat in specific?
Dan began to walk to the living room and the pitter patter of feet behind him reminded him once again that he wasn’t alone. He made it to the couch and as he sat down and reached for his laptop, the dragon flew up and landed on the couch next to Dan, curling into a ball and looking up at Dan with those big eyes.
Keeping it well within his view, he opened his laptop and googled Dragon Pet and he was shocked at the amount of websites that came up. Apparently dragons were extremely popular among people as a new form of exotic pet. According to the blog that Dan found, they require a high protein diet and lots of water. They also like sleeping in a comfortable bed at night but a lot of people claimed that they slept right on the edge of their own beds so Dan figured he could let…
Dan suddenly breaks out into a sweat because he forgot the most important part about this entire ordeal. He had to tell Phil about the dragon. What was he even going to tell Phil about it? He was going to have to tell Phil before he came home tomorrow.
Their landlord didn’t want them to have pets of any kind.
And then came the other tough part. Can you even keep this animal as a pet? Is that even feasible? He could barely handle a hamster, how can he handle a dragon that is...currently looking up at him with big eyes.
Dan turned back to his laptop, trying to ignore it’s gaze as he scrolled down the website further. They are like any normal pet really. They require vet visits and other various things. They also require walks, occasional baths, and they loved to be petted as well. Dan bit his lip and continued scrolling but found nothing else that stuck out to him.
Knowing what the thing eats now, Dan decides to google exotic pet shops around him and see if any of them would have any food for it. He would need to get food regardless if he is even going to keep this thing because it needs to eat. He can’t let it go without food.
He looks at the first website and goes to the search bar and searches for dragon food and much to his surprise, he sees that they have all kinds of options for various high protein diets for them. He clicks on a few of the different varieties of food and then checks out, putting that he would pick them up in a half hour.
Dan goes to stand up, shoving his laptop off to the side of the couch. He places his feet on the floor when he hears a little whine and he remembers that he can’t just leave. The little creature is flapping its wings and huffing through its nose and Dan doesn’t even know if he could trust to leave it alone for the whole fifteen to twenty minutes he would be gone.
But he doesn’t have a way to take it with him like one would take a dog on a walk.
Dan takes the chance and decides that it shouldn’t take him more than a half an hour so he can totally make it back before it destroys his entire flat. So he gives it one more look and a hopeful smile before grabbing his wallet and walking out the door.
***
Bag of food in hand and other various things like a “dog bed” and toys, Dan walked back to his flat as fast as he could. He looked at his phone many times to see how long it was taking him and by the time he reached the door to his flat, it said it took him approximately 27 minutes to walk there, get the stuff, and walk back. He figured it could be worse but also he was terrified to open his door in case he walked in to everything smouldering or tore to shreds.
Much to his surprise though, what was waiting on the other side wasn’t complete and total destruction, but rather a very well behaved creature sitting on the other side ofother of the door, waiting for him to walk in.
Dan was suspicious. He walked in further and the dragon followed him inside, like an actual puppy to it’s mother. Dan scoped out everything in view in his flat and noticed that nothing seemed out of place besides a pillow from the couch now sitting on their floor. He walked over to inspect it further and nope, nothing looked weird or out of place. Dan was actually relieved.
Walking to the kitchen, Dan takes the bag with the dragon’s new stuff and puts it on the floor. He pulls out the bowl for the food and then a water bowl and places it next to the counter. He pulls out the bag of high protein dragon food that sat on the bottom shelf of the pet store...much to Dan’s surprise… and opened the top, pouring its contents into the bowl. As soon as he finished, the dragon rushed over to the bowl and began to eat, it’s swings and tail moving rapidly, content.
Dan found himself smiling. Even though he has no clue what he’s doing, he still feels good knowing he’s going to take proper care of the animal. He can’t keep it, he knows that. But for the time being until he can find a place for it, he can try his best to take care of it.
Instinctively, he reaches down and pets it. Of course the texture of it’s skin is nothing like the fur of a cat or a dog. It’s rough, a bit coarse, but also has a soft feel that makes Dan want to continue feeling it.
Standing up, Dan grabs the bowl for the water and takes it to the sink, filling it up and then setting it on the floor. The dragon moves from the food to the water and laps at that as well. While the dragon is finishing that, Dan goes to the living room and sets down it’s bed and some of the toys he bought. He keeps an eye on the dragon and just as he looks into the kitchen to make sure it’s doing what it’s supposed to be, the creature flew out of the room like a bat out of hell and Dan screeched trying to catch it before it broke something.
To no avail, the creature flew from corner to corner and Dan had to just run after it and hope for the best. Tripping over the coffee table, he managed to reach out and grab onto the flying dragon just as it was zooming for another corner. He held its squirming body in his hands and took a few deep breaths.
This was going to be a rough night.
***
“Dan? Where are you?”
It was the next morning and Dan was currently laying in bed, the dragon curled next to his body. He was up most of the night, mostly because of the dragon in question not sleeping at all. Dan had also learned that the dragon had a new ability: it could definitely breathe fire. Dan learnt that the hard way after Dan woke up to the smell of burning and looked to see the dragon sitting on a burning pillow. Dan immediately threw the pillow in the sink and got the fire out before it spread, sweating at the adrenaline of having to move so fast.
But now...Phil was home, and Dan was sitting straight up in bed as he looks down at the creature and heardhears the footsteps outside of his room telling him that Phil was now walking around inside of the flat.
Dan gets up, giving the dragon one more look before heading out of the room to greet Phil, “Hey! How was the trip?”
Phil looked at Dan and smiled, “It was fun! Martyn and Corn showed up and it was fun to have the family all together for a bit. I also beat my dad at Scrabble.”
Dan just laughed.
Phil started walking into the kitchen and stopped in his tracks and turned to Dan. Dan at first didn’t know why Phil was stopping but then he remembered that food and water bowl on the floor.
“Dan...did you get a dog?” Phil asks, turning to him.
Dan bites his lip because he knows he’s going to have to tell Phil now.
“Not exactly.”
“A cat?” Phil says. “You know I’m allergic.”
“Not exactly.”
As if on cue, the dragon flew out of the bedroom and zipped past them both, landing on the island in the middle of their kitchen. The dragon sat there, panting and huffing and looking like the happiest little animal in the world.
Phil yelped and held his hand over his chest, “What is that!”
“It’s a dragon,” Dan mumbles. “I found it on the street and took it in.”
“A dragon!” Phil yells. “This is a dream. There is no way you have a dragon.”
“I haven’t named it or anything but yeah, we have a dragon.” Dan says, scratching the back of his neck.
Phil slowly walked up to the counter and lookedcounter looked down at the creature. He placed his hand out, offering his scent to the animal who just stared at him and then turned it’s head the other way away from Phil. Dan thought that was odd. The animal has been so receptive this entire time but suddenly it doesn’t even want to go near Phil, the gentlest person Dan’s ever known?
Maybe it has something to do with the note that came with it?
Dan hadn’t forgotten about the note. In fact, it’s sat in the back of his mind this entire time and he has no clue what it means. It said to beware of those he trusted but that doesn’t make any sense to him because he knows he can trust Phil. He’s not had any reason to not trust him in the long time that they’ve known each other.
“What do we do with it?” Phil asks.
“I’m not sure.”
They both look at each and then look back at the dragon sitting patiently on the counter. Dan has no clue what they even can do.
***
Over the course of the first week, Dan and Phil take turns researching the dragon and how to properly care for it. Dan even takes it on a few walks at night when he thinks people won’t be around to comment on the weird creature in a harness.
Dan’s trying not to become attached to it. But it’s slowly making it harder when he’s already came up for a name for it. Stormy. He knows that it’s a cheesy name, and also the same name as Kylie Jenner’s daughter. But the dragon’s temper was that ofthat of of a stormy nature so he thought the name fit.
Stormy also got used to sleeping next to him in bed. He feels bad that Stormy has taken the middle so now he and Phil actually don’t touch at night but Dan supposes that’s normal for a new animal.
Dan has also gotten Stormy better food, toys, and even a cute collar so he can keep track of it. He also found a vet that specifically handles dragon’s and other exotic animals and Stormy’s first appointment is in a week'sweeks time.
But Phil is adamant that they’re not keeping the dragon.
Dan kind of thought that Phil might be against it. Maybe it’s because the dragon won’t actually take to Phil. Stormy never comes to Phil for anything. Even if Phil tries to play with it, the dragon will huff and turn the other way.
However, it still catches Dan off guard when Phil turns to him one day and says, “I think I’ve found a new home for Stormy.”
Dan’s heart aches and he furrows his brows, “New home?”
“I found a special humane society that takes in dragon’s. The turn around rate for their adoption is less than a day, so Stormy will go to a good home really soon.”
“But why can’t we keep it?” Dan asks. Stormy was currently laying on his lap as they watched TV, curled up with his wings relaxed and his tail curled around him.
“Dan, be realistic. We can’t keep a dragon.”
Dan felt a bit hurt. He has grown to really like Stormy and having them as a pet. He didn’t want to get rid of Stormy unless he had an actual worry as to why he couldn’t keep them. He did all of the research. Stormy shouldn’t grow any bigger in size. Dan can even teach and train Stormy to control their flying and fire breathing.
“I’m not going to get rid of them, Phil,” Dan says, his voice unwavering and serious.
“We can’t keep them,” Phil repeated.
Dan picked up Stormy and held him close to his chest and walked to their bedroom, shutting the door and sitting on the bed with Stormy. He wasn’t going to let Phil take Stormy away. He was going to keep them regardless.
He just hopes that Phil will understand why.
***
The note is replaying in Dan’s mind. Be careful of who you trust. Dan can feel the words bearing into his mind and he couldn’t quite move past them. He has a feeling that the note is about Phil now. The note was a future comment about Phil not wanting to keep Stormy and trying to convince Dan as well that they can’t keep them.
Dan knows why. Dan knows why Phil says that they can’t keep Stormy. But that doesn’t make it hurt any less. Dan has grown to really love the little creature and he’s found it hard to not think about Stormy and all he can do for the dragon during its life time.
It’s been two weeks now since Stormy first came to live with them, and Dan is sitting on the floor playing with Stormy as he plays fetch like any other pet. Phil is sitting on the couch on his laptop and Dan keeps looking up at him to see if Phil will say anything to him.
Stormy brings the ball back to Dan and Dan pets the back of their head as Stormy huffs and pants and wags their tail excitedly at being praised for doing the right thing.doing right. Dan ruffles behind their eyes and leans down, pressing a soft kiss against Stormy’s head. The dragon sticks out it’s tongue and licks against Dan’s skin and Dan giggles at the feeling of the slimy tongue against him.
“Stormy’s appointment is tomorrow, right?” Phil asks.
Dan turns to him and nods, “Yeah, their check up is tomorrow.”
“After their appointment, I found this shop next to the vet that carries dragon specific stuff. I think we should stop there and see what they have.”
Dan’s heart races a little bit as he smiles, “Are you sure?”
Phil nods and flashes him a smile, “I’d be lying if I said that Stormy hasn’t grown on me.”
Stormy huffs out a breath and Dan smiles wide.
Yeah, he was happy to have the little creature as a new family member.

Japan 2.0
Summary: Phil decides to plan a trip to Japan for Dan because he wants to propose to him.
Word Count: 1.1k
Warnings: None
A/N: The 2019 Japhan trip has me soft
**Read on Ao3**
“What would you say if I said I was considering buying tickets to Japan for Dan and I?”
Phil’s mum looked at him through the screen of his laptop as he FaceTimed her for the first time in a few weeks. He hadn’t meant to go so long without talking to her, but he definitely needed to ask her about this decision as his first confidant.
“Well I think that’s great but what is the occasion?” She asks.
“I want to propose to him.”
HIs mum stuttered for a moment before she opened her mouth and spoke. “Is this something new?”
Phil lets out a loud sigh because he doesn’t know what he was expecting to be his mum’s reaction but asking if this had been a new revelation was definitely not something he had thought it. The answer to this was a bit complicated.
No, it wasn’t an entirely new concept. Phil had known pretty much for the past 10 years that he wanted to be with Dan forever. It was just difficult because of all of the hidden complications around them from Dan not being out to their fan’s not knowing either.
Plus, he hadn’t really ever asked Dan what his thoughts on marriage were. They had discussed it very briefly but it was never a center of conversation between them. He guesses that they had just never brought it up and that was perfectly okay.
“Not really,” Phil finally says. “I think it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do but I never fully knew when.”
“It’s a big commitment,” His mum says.
Phil nods. “I know. I think we’re ready.”
Her eyes go a bit watery and his do as well as she wipes underneath them and smiles at him. “I”m really happy for you both, child. I’ve always thought of Dan to be a part of the family and it makes me thrilled to know he will be soon.”
Phil smiles and laughs. “Hopefully.”
She swats the webcam and Phil chuckles some more as he dries the tears that are falling gently from his eyes and he continues to tell his mum about the ring he has currently hiding in a basket under their bed.
***
Phil purchases the tickets for them to fly out in late November. He doesn’t tell Dan right away that he did this but one day, Dan picks up on Phil’s odd behavior and calls him out.
“You’re hiding something from me.” He says, his mouth full of a quinoa salad that he had insisted to get to try and be healthy. Phil knew the grimaces on his face said otherwise.
“Am not.”
Dan cocks his eyebrow and sucks his lips into a line. “You’re a shite liar, mate. I can read it all over your face.”
Phil gives. “Fine. I am.” He finally says and Dan visibly tightens, setting down his fork and turning in the chair to Phil. His face was reading out with it so Phil let it out. “I bought us tickets to go to Japan in November.”
Dan’s mouth dropped open. “What?”
“I thought we could use a trip and we both were saying we wanted to go back to Japan so i found some flights and we’re going in November.”
“Phil, it’s September!” Dan cries. “I don’t have enough time to prepare!”
Phil laughs. “You’ll be fine! It’s over two months away.”
Dan starts rambling about how he needs to renew his passport and get a new photo taken and then he starts browsing sites for new trendy clothing he can buy and take with him. Phil doesn’t say anything. He just lets Dan do what Dan is going to do because he wants to make Dan as happy as possible on this trip.
***
They depart on a Wednesday and Dan was a bundle of anxious energy the week leading up. Phil was concerned for a bit that the trip wouldn’t be feasible. Dan was worried about his project that got postponed. He was worrying about his next merch launch that was set to release less than a week after they got back. And he was worried about Norman.
Phil had woken up quite a few times during the night to see Dan sitting on the bed, mumbling to himself as he scrolled mindlessly on his laptop. Some nights Phil could get him to relax and go to bed, but more often than not, Dan would stay up until the sun came through the window and then have dark circles the next day.
The plane ride went smoothly and they had no issues getting their luggage. Duncan and Mimei met them at the airport and they traveled all together to their hotel. Phil had booked them an executive stay suite so the shock on Dan’s face when they walked in was worth the thousand pound price hike for it.
They settle in and get situated and Dan asks if they can nap for a little bit so they do. By that afternoon, they’re feeling refreshed and they go out to dinner with Duncan and Mimei before having a few drinks at a place down the strip.
Phil decides to propose three days into their trip when Mimei suggest that they go to a cherry blossom garden. Phil figures it’ll be perfect and he honestly can’t wait. Although the ring in his pocket feels like it’s eating through his jeans and he refuses to let it feel like anything but nice.
Mimei and Duncan take them to a secluded area with not many people to get photos with the cherry blossoms and Dan already begins taking selfies when Phil takes a deep breath and reaches into his pocket.
Dan motions for Phil to come over to him so they can get a photo together and so Phil does and he squishes his face next to Dan’s and kisses his cheek as Dan giggles and swats him to stop tickling him. This is best mood Dan has been in a long time and Phil wants to keep it that way.
So he goes for it and drops to one knee.
No one else is paying attention to them but now that Dan has noticed what is going on, he’s stood shell-shocked under the blossoms with his mouth clamped shut.
Phil doesn’t have a speech for Dan prepared because he knew he would be too nervous to repeat it anyway. So he instead just says, “will you marry me?”
Dan’s answer is immediate and he nods and smiles widely as Phil jumps up and wraps him in a massive hug. Dan gives him his hand and Phil tearfully puts the too big ring on his finger as the black band stunned against his pale complexion.
“I honestly kind of felt like you were going to do something,” Dan says with a chuckle. “But I didn’t want to get my hopes up.”
“Are you happy?” Phil finds himself asking and Dan nods quickly.
“The happiest I’ve been in a while.”
So it was another Japan trip for them with a lot of memories and they couldn’t wait to show everyone else the memories that they had made.

Starstruck
Summary: Phil attends all of Dan Howell’s concerts. In fact, he makes it a rule to even record every one he goes to. You could say he was in love with Dan Howell and in fact, that wouldn’t be a lie because he’s actually Dan’s fiancé. Too bad Dan’s fans see him as the creepy guy at Dan’s concerts.
Warnings: A brief mention of sex but not explicit.
Word Count: 3.6k
Genre: Famous singer!Dan and present!phil
A/N: I thought of this fic after finding out Sophie Turner attends a lot of the Jonas Brother’s Concerts because of Joe and I thought it would be cute to write a fic with a slightly different side! Happy reading :)

“Dan Howell we love you!”
“Dan! Dan! Dan!”
Phil groaned as looked through the screen of his phone at the video recording of his fiancé up on stage. That was one thing Dan did make Phil promise to do if Phil was going to be attending every concert on his tour: record each show.
So, Phil, being the best fiancé he could be, made a bunch of storage onto an old iPhone he found laying around their flat and proceeded to record and attend each show on Dan’s United States Tour. Tonight, they were in some place called Buffalo and Phil couldn’t really make out what was even going on here besides the fact that Canada and Niagara Falls was literally on the other side of the city.
It was night 13 and although Phil knew Dan would never admit it, Dan was tired. Phil could tell on the screen as his body lagged a bit more than it did in rehearsals and his singing was a bit off key. Not like any of the screaming girls and boys could tell the difference but Phil had been to enough rehearsals and shows to tell with Dan was struggling a bit with his energy.
But, it was the last song before the encore. Phil’s phone battery was struggling to hold on and his arm was getting a bit tired holding it as steady as he could for Dan’s big ‘project’ that he wants the footage for.
“Remember that the footage has to be usable, Phil. That means I don’t want your shaky arm trying to focus on me.”
Phil laughed in his head as he replayed Dan’s words to him the night Phil told him he was attending each show and Dan told him about his master plans—which were also a secret…to Phil anyway. Phil hadn’t pushed the matter when Dan had made it clear he didn’t want to tell anyone his plan so Phil had just went along with it. Although he does in a way wish he could know why he’s getting an arm ache every night.
The music to Dan’s final song cuts out and everyone starts cheering. Dan’s smiling, Phil’s smiling back, knowing Dan can’t see him but he can feel it, and everything has gone perfectly once again for another night.
Dan walks off the stage and the band continues to play and Phil sees a few people begin to trickle out from the corner of his eye but he just shrugs it off as people wanting to leave early or wanting to beat the crowd. He tries not to feel a little bit hurt when he sees some people leave the show early even though an irrational part of his brain wants people to stay and see what his fiancé is doing on the stage.
Its radio silent in the stadium. Phil is still shocked that Dan managed to sell out a nearly 40,000 person stadium but he has. Just as people look defeated and ready to leave, Dan comes back out in an entirely new outfit and the whistles and cheers begin again.
Dan’s final two songs are Phil’s favorite. But that’s honestly because they’re about him. If people didn’t know the meaning of Dan’s songs, they would think they were about a childhood love or even a teenage love that blossomed into more. They wouldn’t know that they, quite literally, told the world about his and Phil’s long-term relationship.
As Dan belted out the lyrics about blue eyes and raven hair, Phil felt the hair on his arm prickle up a bit and goosebumps form. He always gets chills. He remembers when Dan first wrote the pieces and read the lyrics to Phil. Phil had cried so hard and just held Dan close as Dan just giggled and kissed his cheek.
“Why are you crying?”
“Because they’re beautiful, Dan.”
“Yeah, well, you’re just as beautiful too.”
It was cheesy. Of course it was. But in the words of another Dan lyric, “it was meant to be cheesy”.
Just as Phil’s phone gives the final battery warning, Dan’s set finally ends and a shower of sparks sprays up as confetti falls all over the floor. Phil reached out and caught a few pieces himself and pocketed them in his jean jacket. He was saving those for his own special surprise.
Dan left the stage and the lights slowly turned on and Phil waited for the mass crowd of girls around him to dissipate before he snuck around to the stage entrance and visited Dan in the dressing room.
Dan’s security guards knew him by face so he didn’t have to say anything when he walked behind the stage and ended up by a door that he opened to a long hallway. When he got the dressing room and saw Dan’s name on the door, he knocked once and pressed it open.
“Hey!”
Phil shut the door behind him as he walked in to Dan sprawled out on the couch, his arms flopped down by his side. “You did amazing tonight.”
Dan turned his head and smiled at him, his face red and a bit sweaty, his make up a bit melted. “You’d say that even if I fucked up every song.”
Phil walked over and sat down on the other end of the couch. Dan immediately sat up and scooted towards Phil before flopping into his chest and relaxing. Phil wrapped his arm around Dan’s upper body and pulled him close, bending down and kissing the top of his head.
Just as Dan’s body relaxed a bit further and Phil felt the rest of his muscles tense, the door opened and Dan’s manager walked in, her phone in head. “We’re going to have to leave within the hour to get on the road towards Pittsburgh.”
Dan just nodded and smiled at her as he pulled away from Phil and stretched. He was still fully in his costume—well, it was an outfit but it was pretty costume-like too in Phil’s opinion but the sparkles and glitter sequins on the black leather covering Dan’s arms.
“You should get dressed,” Phil says turning to Dan. “Tonight is going to be a tour bus night and I don’t feel like having you complain the entire time that your jeans are too constricting.”
Dan scoffed and reached out, slapping his arm. “That was once and you had no problem helping me get the jeans off so I don’t want to hear you complain, you twat.”
Phil just giggled and leaned over, capturing Dan’s lips in a quick kiss. He still gets butterflies in his chest when he kisses Dan and he loves that. He loves that Dan still has the same affect on him as he did when they were teenagers, meeting for the first time in a bar in Manchester. Dan was singing for a cover band and Phil was just a lonely college student looking to have a few drinks.
It was really like fate that they actually took each other to bed that same night but then both simultaneously decided that being together only once wasn’t going to cut it and nearly ten years and one proposal later, here they were. Phil supporting Dan on tour as Phil works from his laptop for the BBC.
“Maybe if you’re good we can celebrate in the hotel room tomorrow night,” Dan whispers before pressing another kiss to Phil’s lips. Phil just smiles into it and kisses back one more time for good measure.
“Hm…maybe.”
Dan shoves Phil back with a laugh as he finally stands up and makes his way over to his suitcase in the corner that was filled with all of his stuff. Phil watched as he took off his outfit and hung it on a hanger for the crew to grab later and then put on a pair of sweatpants and Phil’s baggy York University sweatshirt.
Phil gave that to Dan when they first started dating so when Dan went back home at night, he would still have Phil with him. Now, Phil would love to have that hoodie back but Dan quite literally growls when Phil even makes that suggestion so he lets Dan have it now.
They grab the rest of Dan’s stuff and then make their way out the back to their tour bus and get inside with minimal people around…thankfully. They take a seat on one of the couches on the side and Dan curls up onto Phil just as Phil wraps his arms around him once more.
They’ll go to the bedroom soon where they’ll sleep but for right now, they were just going to sit and relax for the ride.
***
Something surprising happens when Phil wakes up the next morning, a bit disoriented as he realizes he’s on the moving bus. He checks his phone and goes on Twitter and sees that ‘Daniel Howell Live’ is still trending on Twitter. He curiously checks the hashtag because hey, if he can find some good video and good photos for PR, he’ll have Dan’s manager ask the people for permission to use them. So he scrolls a bit and he scrolls a bit more and suddenly there is a photo of him, stood at his seat, recording the show.
Has anyone else noticed this guy is at every show??? What does a middle aged man go to all of Dan’s shows?? That’s creepy.
After that tweet, there was a thread and apparently there was a photo of him taken at every show and he legit didn’t know about it. He, in fact, had zero idea anyone was taking his photo and he genuinely was a bit freaked out by it.
He read a few more tweets.
He’s been at every show I’ve gone to! I’ve noticed him! Maybe he’s a stalker of Dan…how gross. Dan’s not gay.
Phil had to scoff at that, loud enough that Dan turned over in his sleep and settled his weight into Phil’s chest, knocking his phone slightly out of the way so his head could rest there. “What are you laughing at?” Dan asked, his sleepy voice so slurred Phil could hardly understand what he was talking about.
“Just some tweet I read saying you weren’t gay.”
Dan snorted and reached up, making grabby hands for Phil’s phone so Phil handed it over and Dan sat up a bit and looked at the tweets. “These are actually kind of laughable.”
“I know.”
“They think you’re my stalker.” Dan laughed. “Who even pays attention to whether or not someone is at a show every night?”
Phil shrugged because he genuinely didn’t know either.
Phil knew that fans speculated about Dan’s sexuality though. Really, it’s been a source of talk ever since Dan’s first big break a few years back when he opened up for Taylor Swift on her European Tour. But Phil also knows that Dan has made it completely clear that he wants to keep his sexuality and his relationship with Phil only for private. And Phil completely gets that.
They’ve been out since they started dating to close friends and family. Phil’s been out to everyone he’s known since university. But Dan has always had a bit more trouble accepting his sexuality and for that, Phil understands Dan’s hesitation when he says he’s not ready to share that side of his life yet.
But Phil loves Dan more than anything else. He loves his smile, his dimples, his laugh, and the way he insults him when they’re being silly. But he also loves the side of Dan no one sees. The side where sex and love and intimacy is involved. He even let a selfish part of himself think about that while they were in bed together the other night. A part of him that when he fucked into Dan, he thought about how no one else knew this side of Dan: this was the side that only Phil got to see.
“Hm…” Dan says, breaking Phil’s thoughts. “It’s quite amusing to me that so many fans are so adamant to say I’m straight. Like, I think it’s actually quite obvious that I’m gay in the same way that I know it’s obvious I like dick but…”
Phil squeaked and pushed a hand over Dan’s mouth to get him to stop that thought right there and Dan just opened his lips and licked a fat stripe over Phil’s palm that had Phil cringing and pulling his hand away.
“You’re easy to break, ya know.” Dan says, laying his head on Phil’s chest so he can look up him. His big brown doe eyes were like pools that Phil could get lost in.
“It’s because I love you too much.”
Dan kisses Phil’s chest. “Mm…love you too.”
They get off from the bus not long after to check into their hotel and put their suitcases in their room. Afterwards, it was straight to the venue to prepare and do the soundcheck and Phil was going to walk around and explore Pittsburgh a bit more, seeing as he’s never been before.
That night, he ends up in the same floor pit that he was in the night before, like he always is, with his phone fully charged and ready to go. He sends Dan a quick ‘good luck, i love you so much’ message before he puts his phone away and takes out the one to record.
The show goes smoothly and everyone is happy and the night ends the same way with Phil retreating back and visiting Dan just as Dan is getting out of his costume. He leaves with Dan to go to the hotel and when they get back into the room, he goes on Twitter again and happens to see the same thread but with new photos of him.
The man was at Pittsburgh too!! Does @danielhowell know he has a stalker?? Should we contact the police?
Phil rolled his eyes and showed Dan the tweets to which Dan replied with an eye roll and a “for fucks sake!” before he flopped onto the bed and rolled towards Phil to snuggle.
“Gonna have to get security after me apparently,” Phil playfully jokes.
Dan swings his leg over Phil’s hip and sits flush on his hips as he leans down and kisses Phil soundly on the mouth. “Maybe so.” He whispers with a smirk, placing his hand on Phil’s jaw. “Maybe I’ll have to tell security that a hot guy has been chasing after me since my uni days and he follows me to all of my concerts and he also happens to be my fiancé who is fucking great in bed and…yeah, I’d really like to continue the great in bed part right about now.”
So after a quick round of sex that left them both breathless, Phil fell asleep with the thoughts in his mind about what they were supposed to do. Dan had a two day break before his show in Albany so he hopes by then maybe everyone will forget about him.
But somehow, he fears they won’t.
***
Dan flubs up on accident in Albany.
Phil doesn’t realize what he’s done until the young girl sitting next to him on the floor is pointing out the silver band on Dan’s ring finger.
It’s his engagement ring and as soon as Phil sees it, his heart stops a bit in his chest because he knows Dan is gonna have to answer for this. He’s going to have to answer for why he suddenly is wearing a ring on that finger when he never did before…well, in the public eye anyway.
Phil proposed to Dan over three years prior but they both agreed on not planning any of their wedding until Dan’s done with his United States tour. Phil was completely fine with that but Dan wore his ring all of the time when it was just them or he was going out with friends.
He normally keeps it safe on the bus or in the safe in the hotel room but he must have forgotten to take it off.
And fuck other people are pointing now and he hopes to God Dan cannot notice what is happening.
At the end of the show, Phil practically runs to Dan’s dressing room where Dan is crying softly on the couch, his face scrunched up as he struggles to hold in the tears of guilt and frustration that he can read so clearly on Dan’s face. He runs over to him and gathers him tight as Dan lets them go and apologizes to Phil for wearing it.
“I forgot I had it on.” Dan said through strangled tears.
“It’s okay.”
“But it’s not!” Dan cried. “Oh my God I’ve fucked up so bad.”
And while that turned out to not be entirely true, Phil did reassure him as much as possible that everything was going to be okay.
***
The tabloids talk about it first.
Dan Howell Spotted With Mystery Ring on Left Hand in Albany Show.
That seemed to be the headline written everywhere like a slap across the face.
All of the fangirls were crying. What women is he secretly married to? What is that ring? When did this all happen? How could this all happen?
Phil felt like he had whiplash reading all of the comments.
“We’re going to have to address this,” Phil says softly.
“I know.”
They’re sat in a hotel in Boston now, waiting for the show to begin in a few hours. They had snuck away for a private talk and everyone had let them go. They needed to discuss this, no matter how hard it could be.
“I know you don’t want to out us…”
“No,” Dan says, biting his lip. “I…I think I have to.”
“You don’t have to,” Phil says. “You could always say you want to be private and…”
“How long is that privacy really going to last, Phil?” Dan asked, his voice defeated. “Is it going to last for a year or only for an hour? People are already commenting about you and you’ve done nothing…maybe we should just come out.”
“If that’s what you want.”
Dan bites his lip and bit harder and then looks Phil in the eyes as he nods. “It’s what I want.”
“Okay,” Phil says, leaning in for a kiss. “It’s what I want too.”
Phil wanted whatever was best for Dan and if this was best, then he wanted to go along with it.
They made their way back to the stadium and Phil opted for standing off the side of the stage instead of in the audience, just in case. He’d seen some of Dan’s earlier shows this way but never once has he seen him play such a sold out show from the sidelines.
They concert begins as normal and Phil notices that Dan is wearing his ring again, not taking it off and he feels his heart flutter a bit. Dan does his normal songs and routines and then before they know it, the encore is starting.
But right before it does, Dan asks if the audience can get quiet for a moment.
“As many of you all know,” he begins into his microphone. “The next few songs I have written are about someone very special in my life. I’ve been hiding them from you for a very long time now and I really just…don’t want to anymore. They’re such a massive part of who I am today and who I will be in the future and I don’t want to continue hiding them anymore. And it’s not fair to you guys either.
Suddenly Dan turns to where Phil is standing and Phil feels his heart give out a bit. Dan motions for Phil to walk out and Phil looks down at his black Vibes shirt and ripped jeans and feels like he’s not properly addressed for this but he starts walking out anyway and there are suddenly cheers and yells and Phil doesn’t know what’s happening.
“Everyone, meet my fiancé Phil.” Dan says, taking Phil’s hand and standing close to him. “You all have been talking about him quite a bit online so here is my apparent stalker who is actually just my fiancé and partner for the last 1o years.”
Dan leans over and kisses Phil on the cheek and Phil feels a bit flush at all of this. Like he doesn’t know what’s happening anymore but he also doesn’t entirely mind it.
“Okay, now get off the stage you dork. You’re stealing my show.”
Dan turns to Phil and wraps a hug around him and Phil hugs him back, holding him close as he kisses Dan’s neck once and lets him go, lingering their hands touching for a bit too long as he disembarks down the stage with Dan’s security guard and stands in the audience once again, looking up at Dan with all of the love in the world.
Social media went crazy that night, but really Phil didn’t mind. He went to the rest of the shows as promised and recorded all of them too. At the end of the tour, he finally asked Dan what the footage was for and Dan finally told him.
“It’s for our wedding.” He says, not adding anything more.
Phil just holds him tight and kisses his cheek some more.
Life is going to be a bit hectic for a while, but at least he won’t be seen as the stalker fan anymore, and now he’ll be treated as Dan’s fiancé: a title he is more than proud to have.

Buy You A Drink
Summary: Dan’s lonely...and bored. He also has nothing to drink in his flat. So as he’s swiping on Tinder and he matches with a random guy, he decides to play it up a bit. So he asks the guy to bring him a drink to his flat--in exchange for a blow job.
Warnings: It’s porn with little plot
Word Count: 1.1k
[Read on Ao3]
Written for @sudden-sky because they sent a hilarious photo in discord of a text by a guy on Grindr asking the person they matched with to pick him up a drink from 7/11 and it made me want to write that into a fic version lol
It had been a lonely Thursday night for Dan. He was keeping himself busy by switching between Bumble and Tinder, swiping left and right on people just to see if anyone was going to actually match him. He wasn’t looking for a hook up tonight, but if the opportunity presented itself, he might just be willing to do something to escape his lonely night.
He’s ten swipes in on Tinder when he goes to grab his glass on the floor beside his couch and as he’s bringing it up to his mouth, he sees its empty. He groans. Now he’s going to have to get up and get something else.
Dan stands up from the couch and walks into his kitchen with the empty glass. He opens his fridge and immediately is shown nothing. His fridge is completely empty save for the very flat bottle of coke that’s from the rum and Cokes he made on Halloween, nearly two weeks ago.
When he grabs it to test it anyway, nothing comes out. No hiss. Zero carbonation. He groans. It’s undrinkable. He needs to dump it. He begins to dump it down the drain when his phone pings on the counter and he turns his head.
He has a new match, and it’s with a guy named Phil. He vaguely remembers seeing Phil when he was swiping and his pictures caught Dan’s eye. Dark black hair, bright blue eyes. A puppy in the third photo. Yep, he checks all of Dan’s boxes.
But as the bottle empties just a bit more into the sink, Dan suddenly has a master plan because he could maybe get a drink and have a hook up in one night if he plays his cards right.
He drops the empty plastic bottle in the sink and picks up his phone, typing out the message.
Hey. So I know we just matched on Tinder but I have a proposition for you. I’m currently alone in my flat, nothing to drink. Not even any soda. I’m thirsty and I need company. So pick me up a drink and drop it off at my flat and I’ll give you a blow job?
Dan feels no shame hitting send. He washes out the sink and then throws the empty plastic bottle into his recycling and picks his phone up again. He’s already got a new message.
What do you want?
Dan feels his eyes widen and smirk curl into his lips as he types out his next message.
Surprise me?
Phil texts him back a smiley face and then asks for Dan’s address and Dan gives it to him as he sits back on his couch and waits.
It’s nearly 20 minutes later when he gets a knock on the door and his heart is fluttering in his chest. This has to be Phil. He opens the door and sure enough, there he is.
And he’s even more beautiful than his photos. His hair is pushed into a quiff and he’s wearing glasses perched on the edge of his nose. He’s also very well dressed with a jean jacket, red striped shirt, and a pair of tight ripped black jeans. Dan feels his mouth water and his bites his lip as he notices the Starbucks cup in Phil’s hand.
“I got you Starbucks because most people like Starbucks, I hope?”
“I love Starbucks actually.” Dan says with a laugh. He takes the drink from Phil’s hand and takes a sip of it.
It’s an iced caramel macchiato, one of his favorite drinks. It’s kind of amazing how Phil managed to get his favorite drink by total chance.
“I suppose you want your reward now?” Dan asks, backing up into his flat and letting Phil inside.
Phil shockingly shakes his head. “I wasn’t doing it for the, you know, blow job. I just wanted to be friendly more than anything.”
The words cut deep into Dan’s core and he blushes a bit at Phil’s generosity. That’s actually kind of sweet, he thinks.
“Oh, thank you. That’s really sweet.”
“But I won’t be like...be opposed if you wanted to give me a blow job.”
Dan let’s out a snort and sets his drink onto his kitchen counter as he walks Phil into the living room. He pushes Phil back into his couch and Phil goes easy.
Dan sinks to his news because as shocking or not shocking as it may seem, he’s not inexperienced with giving blow jobs. He’s definitely given his fair share of them and he really enjoys them.
He manages to undo Phil’s jeans and open them enough to reach under his boxers and pull him out and damn he’s hung. Dan groans outwardly and Phil looks down at him with flushed cheeks. His cock is heavy and hot in his hand and he strokes a few times up and down to get him riled up.
When Dan bends down, he takes the head into his mouth and sucks.
Phil lasts longer than Dan was expecting him to, but when he cums, it’s copious and Dan swallows it down, cringing at the warm salty mix.
He normally doesn’t swallow, but he felt that he should for Phil for literally going to Starbucks and getting him a drink. He literally didn’t have to do any of this at all for Dan and yet he did without much hesitation.
Dan helps Phil tuck himself back in and then he gets on the couch next to Phil and he’s surprised when Phil leans forward and they’re kissing.
Phil’s lips are soft against Dan’s, a little bit too wet. It’s awkward, mostly because Dan wasn’t expecting it. But it ends with Dan on his back and Phil hovering over him as his hand is shoved down Dan’s joggers.
It’s all over quickly, and when Dan finishes and rides out his actually spectacular orgasm, he finds himself feeling sleepy. Phil is still sat on the couch beside him when Dan feels his eyes drooping shut.
“If you’re really tired, I can get going.” Phil says standing up and Dan just flashes him a sleepy smile and nods.
“Okay.”
He follows Phil to the door and he notices his melted drink still sitting on the counter, a bit sad. As he opens the door and Phil’s heading out, they both stop and Phil turns to him.
“Would you want to maybe go on an actual date to Starbucks with me sometime this week?”
Dan feels his cheeks heat up and he nods again, smiling wide. “Give me your number and we can work out a time?”
Phil gives Dan his number and Dan puts it into his phone and then Phil leaves and everything is lonely and quiet again.
But not for very long as he gets a text from Phil nearly a half an hour later asking if he was free that Saturday...and yes, yes he was.

The conversation comes up naturally most days. Mostly because there is no more questioning or no more of the ‘what ifs’ that could get in the way of the planning for their future. Dan supposes he likes this a lot more. It makes him feel more secure now that he knows he has a future with Phil that is 100% certain and no longer a, but what if this happens?
Most of the time, the conversation happens right before they go to bed. They’ll be laying side by side, Phil under the comforter with Dan over it because Phil’s always too cold and Dan’s always hot. Most of the time, Dan is on his laptop and Phil is reading a new book and sometimes, it’s domesticity as simple as this that makes Dan’s heart soar.
But it’s also times where he sees advertisements for Zillow on the sidebar of whatever website he is browsing where his heart swells.
They’ve been looking at houses for a few months now, although nothing has particularly caught their interest. They thought about penthouses in London, Victorians in the countryside, and cottages on the Isle of Mann. But the house in the advertisement is catching Dan’s eye so he opens a new tab and opens Zillow and begins to search down the list again.
“Are you still looking at houses?” Phil asks, adjusting his glasses on the tip of his nose.
Dan turns his head and shrugs, “Maybe.”
“Find anything good?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know.”
Phil turns on his side and perches up a bit to look at Dan’s screen. Dan scrolls a bit further and they stumble upon the £1.5 million penthouse that keeps popping up everytime they search for homes in London.
“Still don’t want the penthouse?” Dan teases because he knows how Phil is firmly against living in one.
“It’s all windows. I don’t want anyone to look up and see me running from the bathroom naked.”
“I thought you wanted a wall of windows?” Dan presses further. “Changed your mind?”
“Oh yeah, so one day when you decide you don’t want to wait to go to bed and we fuck on the couch all London can see us.”
“You’re being overdramatic,” Dan laughs. “That can happen in any house.”
Phil reaches over Dan’s hand and pushes it away from the trackpad and Dan scoffs as Phil begins to scroll. He lands on a small 3 bedroom house that states it is just outside of London, “This is nice.”
“Yeah, but is it going to be big enough for when we decide to get a dog?” Dan asks. “Or have kids?”
“That’s a long way away,” Phil says.
“Yeah, but if we buy a house, then that’ll be our forever home so we should look to make sure the house is going to suit our needs. We’ll need a big backyard for our dog to play and we’ll need to make sure that it has enough room for our children to run around in.”
Phil looks up at Dan and smiles, “I love it when you talk about our future.”
Dan smiles back and leans down, securing a kiss on Phil’s lips, “Me too.” He whispers against Phil’s skin.
“How many kids do you want?”
“We’ve had this conversation,” Phil answers. “2 and a half.”
Dan rolls his eyes, “And what the hell does the half stand for?”
“Half a human,” Phil says, voice completely serious. “Half a human could be a human toddler.”
“You’re weird as fuck,” Dan says, laughing. “Why did I agree to marry you?”
“Because I’m cute and attractive and great in bed,” Phil kisses a line down Dan’s neck that makes him shiver.
“Hm...just about your only good qualities. We know you can’t cook for shit.”
“Oi!” Phil counters. “Watch it you. I thought about actually having sex tonight but nevermind.”
“Oh behave!”
“You behave!” Phil presses back, shutting Dan’s laptop and pushing it off to the side onto the bedside table. “Why did you agree to marry me? Why did I agree to marry you?”
Dan chuckles, suddenly remembering a conversation that they had all the way back in 2009, “Do you remember when you asked me to marry you in your bedroom at your parents house after I gave you a blow job?”
Phil chokes and stops his mid-climb over Dan’s body, “That doesn’t count.”
“Hm? 18 year old me thought it did. Was waiting for a proper ring for nearly 10 years.”
“I got you a ring in 2016! It was not 10 years.”
“Felt like it.”
Phil leans down and kisses the smirk off from Dan’s lip as Dan wraps his arms around Phil’s neck and lets himself get lost in the gentleness. When they were younger, everything was more urgent, more sped up. They didn’t have the time that they do now. Back then it was quick fucks before Phil’s parent’s could come out or it was a quick hand job because they couldn’t wait to get their hands on each other.
Now they have time. They have time to kiss and explore each other's bodies. This is the time where Phil found out about Dan’s sensitive tummy and how he moans when Phil kisses it. Or how Phil likes it when Dan grabs his hips or his thighs and leaves marks.
Dan shuts his eyes and melts into the kiss just as Phil reaches under his hips and pulls at the waistband of his pajama shorts and yanks them down his legs tossing them to the floor.
Phil leaves Dan’s mouth to kiss down his neck and suck a light mark into his collarbone. Dan doesn’t care anymore whether or not Phil does this because he doesn’t show himself on camera much anymore. It was a choice he made when he and Phil got serious about wanting to settle down and get married and start a family.
Privacy was a big deal for Dan, and he wanted it to remain that way.
When all is said and done, Phil collapses on Dan, his weight heavy on his body as Dan pets his sweat slicked hair gently. Phil always got sleepy after sex, his body caving and giving way to try and make up some of the energy it just lost.
Dan never gets tired, he normally becomes wide awake, sometimes even lost in his own thoughts. But today, he just runs his hands through Phil’s hair and lets Phil rest on him, even though the room feels like a hundred degrees and his body is covered in various fluids.
“When we get a dog, or have a kid, we’re not going to be able to do this often.”
Phil’s voice cuts through Dan’s thoughts.
“Why not?”
“Don’t want a dog licking my arse during sex and don’t want my kid walking in on us and then me having to give the dreaded birds and the bees talk.”
Dan laughs. “Just be like my parents and tell them directly what we’re doing. How scarring can it be?”
Phil looks up and laughs. “You’re going to be in charge of all of the important conversations.”
“And you can be in charge of making sure the dog isn’t in the bedroom during sex.”
Phil swats at Dan’s chest and Dan laughs as Phil rolls off from him and settles into bed.
“I want to go to a real estate agent sometime this week,” Phil says, looking up at Dan, “I want us to finally find our forever home.”
Dan nods and leans down to kiss him again as tears prick his eyes a bit, because this is all he could ever dream of.
