Today we remember the passing of Jani Lane who Died: August 11, 2011 in Woodland Hills, California
Jani Lane (born John Kennedy Oswald; February 1, 1964 – August 11, 2011) was an American recording artist and the lead vocalist, frontman, lyricist and main songwriter for the glam metal band Warrant. From Hollywood, California, the band experienced success from 1989 to 1996 with five albums reaching international sales of over 10 million. Lane left Warrant in 2004 and again in 2008 after a brief reunion. Lane also released a solo album, Back Down to One, in 2003, and the album Love the Sin, Hate the Sinner with a new group, Saints of the Underground, in 2008. Lane contributed lead vocals and songwriting to various projects throughout his career.
Lane was born John Kennedy Oswald (later changed to John Patrick Oswald), on February 1, 1964 in Akron, Ohio to Robert and Eileen Oswald. He was raised in Brimfield with four older siblings: sisters Marcine Williams, Michelle Robinson and Victoria Ley, plus older brother Eric, already an accomplished guitarist. With sisters Micki and Vicky and brother Eric harmonizing and playing guitar, Lane taught himself to play drums, guitar and piano by ear by age five. He grew up listening to Cleveland rock station WMMS (100.7 FM "The Buzzard") and was introduced to a variety of music by his older siblings.
With connections from siblings Eric and Vicky in and around the music scene (and with his parents' help), Lane made a name for himself at a very young age. He played drums under the pseudonym "Mitch Dynamite" in clubs by age 11 and with a local band "Pokerface." By that time, his siblings had left for college or marriage, although Vicky was still active in the entertainment industry in northeast Ohio and southwest Florida. Due to Vicky's numerous connections, Lane was able to network with industry execs in pursuit of his dream. Lane graduated from Field High School, in Mogadore, Ohio, a nearby city to Brimfield in 1982.
Lane is credited as the vocalist/drummer on Warrant's Latest and Greatest CD. Throughout his career, Lane would sometimes play drums/acoustic guitar and piano with his band and played the drums in various formats and gigs with other musicians.
After high school, Lane joined the band Cyren, featuring vocalist Skip Hammonds, guitarist John Weakland, bassist Don Hoover (and later Rusty Fohner) with Lane on drums and vocals. Many of Cyren's shows opened for a popular local band called Risque'. When their bassist, Al Collins, noticed Lane's vocal talents, he convinced Lane to form a new band they eventually called Dorian Gray. The new band also included Steven Chamberlin on drums and Dave Chamberlin on lead guitar. Dorian Gray was designed to have Lane as the lead vocalist and to perform original material, but Lane wasn't ready to be the lead singer and quickly returned to the drum kit. Billy Denmead was hired as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. After only a few shows, Collins left the band, vowing to put a band together when Lane was ready to be a lead vocalist.
Lane moved to Florida in 1983 with Dorian Gray. He eventually formed Plain Jane with Collins and Chamberlin, adopting the stage name "Jani Lane" (Chamberlin would also soon rechristen himself Steven Sweet). He took the name "Jani" from his German grandparents, who spelled his name "Jani" and pronounced it "Yay-nee."
Lane began vocal training with vocal coach/trainer Ron Feldmann, who introduced him to Creative Engineering, Inc. in Orlando. Lane worked there as a programmer of the animatronic character Dook LaRue, the drummer for The Rock-afire Explosion. His vocal debut was at The Station in Fern Park, Florida.
Lane, Collins, and Chamberlin recorded the first Plain Jane four-track demos at their rented house in Winter Park, Florida. Although reluctant to leave Florida, they rented a trailer in the spring of 1984 and moved to California with hopes of landing a record deal. They were broke by the time they landed at the Hollywood Bowl Motel and resorted to making sandwiches with mustard packets while taking turns calling their parents for cash.
Struggling to make ends meet as a musician, Lane resorted to working in a pornographic video warehouse. The band, along with a new road crew and a few girlfriends, pooled their wages and lived in a two-bedroom condominium rented by new Plain Jane guitarist Paul Noble. At one time there were 13 people living in the crowded space.
By 1985, Plain Jane had become a regular feature on the Los Angeles club circuit and opened many shows for a band called Warrant. Plain Jane's bassist and guitarist both left the band on the same day Warrant's singer and drummer quit. Erik Turner, who had founded Warrant in July 1984, was impressed by Plain Jane's songwriting and vocal performance and invited Lane and Sweet to jam with his band at Hollywood's db Sound in September 1986.
After generating notoriety on the club circuit, Warrant began to attract the attention of record labels. Following an abortive deal with A&M Records over a contribution to the soundtrack for the motion picture Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, the band signed with Columbia Records. The Columbia deal came via the partnering of Warrant and manager Tom Hulett, known for working with The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, The Moody Blues and others. Hulett became Lane's mentor and friend until Hulett's death from cancer in 1993.
As lead vocalist with Warrant, Lane wrote all of the material for the band's 1989 debut double platinum album, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, including four Top 40 hit singles: "Down Boys", "Sometimes She Cries", "Big Talk" and the No. 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Heaven." The album peaked at no. 10 on The Billboard 200. Lane also wrote four Top 40 hit singles ("Cherry Pie," "I Saw Red," "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "Blind Faith") for the second album, the 1990 double platinum Cherry Pie, which peaked at no. 7 on the Billboard 200. Lane also co-wrote and performed with Warrant the song "The Power" in the 1992 movie Gladiator. In 1992, Warrant released Dog Eat Dog, their gold third album, which peaked at no. 25 on the Billboard 200.
Lane left Warrant in March 1993 to pursue a solo career. He returned six months later, helping the band secure a new record with Tom Lipsky of CMC International. Warrant recorded Ultraphobic in 1995, Belly to Belly in 1996, Greatest & Latest in 1999 and a cover album, Under the Influence, in 2001.
Due to personal and business disagreements, Lane left Warrant again in 2004. In January 2008, the band's agent, The William Morris Agency, issued a new photograph of the band with Lane prominently featured, confirming his return to the band. It was the first time that all original members had been in the band since 1993. The band's first show with all original members was in May 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee. Warrant performed a series of shows during the summer of 2008, but by September, the band and Lane agreed to move forward separately due to "too much water under the bridge." Warrant and Lane both continued to perform Lane's compositions live and Lane continued to write for himself and other artists.
Lane became involved in acting in the early 1990s. He made a brief appearance in Caged Fear and appeared in High Strung in 1991.
In 1993, Lane started working on his first solo project. Titled "Jabberwocky," the album represented a significant musical departure from previous work. Between 1997 and 2000, demos of Lane's solo material began surfacing on the Internet, with some bids on eBay reaching an estimated $100 per copy. In 2002, Lane decided to postpone the "Jabberwocky" project and released a new project as his debut solo album. The "Jabberwocky" project remained unreleased.
Lane's official debut solo album, Back Down to One, was released on June 17, 2003 through Z Records and in the U.S. in 2006 on Immortal/Sidewinder Records. It carried a "power pop" sound more closely aligned with the sound of Warrant than "Jabberwocky." Shortly after the album's release, Lane was admitted to a rehabilitation center for alcohol and drug-related exhaustion.
In the fall of 2004, Lane contributed lead vocals for the first ever theme song to a novel, Billy McCarthy's "The Devil of Shakespeare," along with James Young from Styx, Ron Flynt of 20/20 and Chip Z'Nuff of Enuff Z'Nuff.
Lane contributed vocals on the track "Bastille Day" and "2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx" for the Magna Carta 2005 Rush tribute album "Subdivisions."
Lane had success with the "VH1 Classic Metal Mania: Stripped" discs, where the acoustic version of "I Saw Red" was included on disc 1, a new acoustic swinging version of "Cherry Pie" featured on disc 2, and a new acoustic version of "Heaven" featured on disc 3.
In 2005, Lane became a fan favorite on the popular VH1 series Celebrity Fit Club 2. His problems with alcohol were highlighted and many viewers supported his efforts at recovery.
With the reissue and U.S. release of "Back Down to One" in 2006, Lane attempted to restart his version of Warrant. Although "Back Down to One" was credited as a solo release, Lane assembled a new touring band called "Jani Lane's Warrant." The band's first shows in Michigan were stopped by legal action from former bandmates objecting to his use of the Warrant logo on his posters. Lane subsequently continued touring without the Warrant name and logo.
Lane lent his vocals to numerous tribute CDs during the 2000s. In 2007, he released a solo cover album titled "Photograph," featuring a collection of his tribute contributions.
Keri Kelli and Lane wrote a song for Alice Cooper titled "The One That Got Away." It was recorded by Cooper on his 2008 record Along Came a Spider. Lane also finished work on a side project, Saints of the Underground, which included Kelli and Bobby Blotzer and Robbie Crane, (both from Ratt). Their album, Love the Sin, Hate the Sinner, was released on April 22, 2008 by Warrior Records, and was mixed by producer/engineer Andy Johns, who'd worked with The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. The album featured additional bass work by Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot, House of Lords). The band was originally called "Angel City Outlaws" when they posted their first two promo singles, "Bruised" and "Exit."
In summer 2010, Lane toured with Great White, filling in for singer Jack Russell, who was recuperating from surgery after suffering internal complications.
On August 11, 2011, the Los Angeles Police Department and local news stations announced that Lane was found dead of acute alcohol poisoning at a Comfort Inn hotel in Woodland Hills, California at the age of 47. Lane was pronounced dead by fire department personnel who responded to a call shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Almost stepped on this snake today 😳😳 DBZ Venom we custom painted for the lead guitar player of the Ratt Tribute Band Out of the Cellar. This guitar was original red. We sanded it down, painted the back and sides black and the front a nice rattlesnake tan :-) We then reaches out to Eric Gulas @thc_concepts and had him do a snakeskin patterned hydrographic on the front of the body and headstock to give us the realistic scale pattern and did some other additional shading here and there. Once that was done we airbrushed in the brown spots, did a slight brownish black burst around the edges and then finished it off with our super smooth satin clear coat. ________________________ #dbz #dbzguitars @deanzelinsky @ratt @davesabo @flyingv #airbrushing #hydrographics #custompaint #snakeskin #rattlesnake #python #custompainting #guitarpainting #venomoussnakes #refinisherporn #guitarporn #customguitar #chattanooga #guitarspotter #guitarsdaily #guitarsofinstagram #tennesseeguitarpainting #heavymetal #hairmetal #dbzvenom https://www.instagram.com/p/B9SjAjuHY1U/?igshid=dpsexyngbmnc

Thos Ælla — Sempiternal Mobocracies (I, Voidhanger)
Tumblr media
Sempiternal Mobocracies by THOS ÆLLA
For anyone who hasn’t been tuned in, Thos Ælla is the one-man project of Derrik Goulding, resident guitar athlete of death metal outfit Father Befouled. That band has devoted itself to a sort of extended ritual of worship, venerating Incantation’s most doomstruck tones and textures. Not a bad sort of project, but Thos Ælla demonstrates that Goulding has a lot of other stuff on his mind, and other work for his fingers. Check out the plucking and strumming of “Gazing into the Eyes of Faithless Servants,” the first track on Thos Ælla’s new LP Sempiternal Mobocracies. It's lovely, a little mournful, a little moody, even a little cornball. Somehow the tune’s heartfelt, emotive tones allow the corny sentiment to suffuse the piece without collapsing into silliness. And man oh man, does the rest of this record emote, with a zany abandon that can be exhausting, and sometimes flirts with cartoonishness. But even at its most fulsome and potentially goofy, Sempiternal Mobocracies is very satisfying, an example of pastiche at its most energetic and entertaining.
The songs are delirious, hybrid concoctions, fusing the proggy ambitions of Traced in Air-period Cynic, the gonzo pace and snarl of Kreator and the operatic sensibility of Queensryche. If that sounds sort of incoherent to you, well, yes, it is. But Thos Ælla’s music (somehow, someway) is not. Check out “Backwards Afterbirth Flows unto Dreaming Temples,” which starts with the sound of howling wind, over which there’s more of that polished and lovely plucking, and soon some very accomplished, brightly melodic guitar wankery. You can just about smell the sweaty spandex. When the song starts to sizzle and crunch, the sensibility of proggy grandiosity doesn’t drop away; it fuses with something grimmer and growling. Not quite thrash, not quite NWOBHM at its grittiest, but in that vein. The song’s final minutes explode into a blast and tremolo-rich environment, battering away at top speed. Snaking, acrobatic soloing overlays it with drama. None of it should work. All of it does.
The record keeps doing that, to winning effect. The speed metal workout of “This Firestorm of Retribution” is a thrilling joyride. “Deep within the Hexevoid, for Seven Aeons Slept” reaches for more of those cornball accents (carnivalesque synths, over-the-top fretboard heroics that hyperbolically peak and froth) before it races for the horizon with an Iron Maiden cover band and several ounces of meth. Hexevoid? No idea. The record’s thematics are abstruse and remote, and really, it’s the aesthetics that seem to matter here.
Those aesthetics end up doing some fairly interesting cultural work. Metal is sharply stratified music, with numerous undergrounds that tend to express antipathy and contempt for their overground, major-label contemporaries. See the late 1980s, when the burgeoning fields of death metal and the crossover kids, in bands like Crumbsuckers and Cryptic Slaughter, poured invective on the hair metal contingent. Thos Ælla anatomizes and sublates those modes, suggesting something about the extent to which metal needed all of them, to create the space into which bands like Death and Carcass could step. Neither of those bands achieved mass popularity, or rocked big venues alongside of Poison or Ratt. But on their own terms, they were significant commercial successes — Carcass is still making records — and they cast long shadows of their own. Thos Ælla pays a sort of outre tribute to all those bands, and makes its own bananas, dolefully dizzy sounds, much to our collective delight.

Hairball’s Lead Guitarist - Happy
A Metal of Montana Interview - by Josh Richards
Tumblr media
*LIVE at the MAC on October 7th.  (Sponsored by the Butte Depot)
As a young 15 year old I can still remember the first concert like it was yesterday.  I had never seen nor heard the individuals responsible for the music outside of my dinky, dual cassette, and detachable speaker Sony boom box before.  Today was my real life “METAL” -  Indian in the Cupboard moment!
On March 27th, 1990 my cousins, Kim and Cheryl, convinced my mother and father to allow me to attend Aerosmith in Billings, Montana.  What I did not know was, that my favorite band at the time, and my favorite singer to date, would be opening for them.  The only words that I was able to muster were, “Sebastian (expletive) Bach”, followed by my mother’s unshocked yet stearn voice sprinkled with that questioning yet firm tone, “What?”.   To which I followed, “Holy (expletive) Mom.” And yes. “Holy (expletive) Dad!”
Tumblr media
*Thanks Mom and Dad for allowing that door to be opened and Kim and Cheryl for taking their little cousin to his first ever ROCK CONCERT!*
Like yesterday, I can still recall the live performance that Sebastian Bach and Skid Row put on.  The notes he was able to hit in the then MetraPark Arena and the rush it brought to my nervous system shot endorphins through my body almost instantaneously.  “Those are the emotions we look to invoke from people young and old at our shows” says Happy, the lead guitarist from, Hairball, a legendary twenty man, seventeen year running tribute band to the likes of Guns & Roses, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Kiss, Van Halen, Queen, Twisted Sister, Journey, Poison and Bon Jovi.”
“Anything worth doing is worth overdoing” – Happy, HAIRBALL Lead Guitarist.
We sat down with Happy, lead guitarist for one of the premiere, if not the premiere Tribute Bands touring the United States currently in HAIRBALL.  This bombastic two and a half hour, professionally produced show including fiery pyro, video screens, smoke machines, make-up, costumes, fire, blood and a set list to rival any will be making a stop at the historical Butte Depot on October 7th in Butte, MT to which Happy added, “we’ve been just starting to scratch the surface on the entire state of Montana.”
Tumblr media
*Happy is a HUGE Evel Knievel Fan*
Happy, the son of a guitar player himself, took a half hour out of his day to talk with our founder, Josh Richards earlier this week about Hairball, himself, the performances and what to expect in Butte on Ocotober 7th.
We asked Happy after receiving his first guitar, a 1950’s Gibson Holllywoood, “If he knew then, that this is what he would be doing for a living?”  Happy did not hesitate, “Ya I did.  I mean that was the dream. I think it was when I saw Kiss in like ’77. I was probably in junior high. I knew I wanted to be a part of that kind of energy.” Happy continued, “Fascinated with bands and nothing has really changed in me since then other than I have insurance and I can afford to play whatever guitars I want to play.”
At the time of the interview and article tickets are currently available at the Butte Depot and ONLINE HERE:  * https://events.ticketprinting.com/event/24998*
As we continued the interview and got to know about Hariball and whatHappy specifically is known for, which is “bringing kids into the show. A lot of time I will yank em and throw my guitar around their neck and just get in touch with my inner sixteen year old anytime we hit the stage and try to be grateful for being able to play for as many people as I get to with Hairball.”  That tone was one of a consistently humble and gracious lead guitarist loving to share the music with fans from the ages of 1 to 100!
Tumblr media
*Hairball just paying homage to KISS!*
The biggest advantage of a show attendee at a HAIRBALL show is that “there are a lot of people out there that are like us.  They like this type of Rock and Roll done this kind of way with the over the top show. I kind of see us as the preservation society of cool rock and roll.” Which in all cases is the probably the single biggest draw to a Hariball show even to the actual performers that HAIRBALL pays tribute to, at times, joining them on stage as well!
As Happy on lead guitar and the other members of the band including Joe, Steve and Bobby as the leads, Freaky on the base, and Blake on the drums play every show and see the looks and the fun the people are having Happy knows they “doing good work that the people are together, face to face and not just sitting on their phones. They are watching real guys play real guitars, beat real drums, and scream into real microphones. That’s something that should never go out of style.”
CHECK THEM OUT!!!
vimeo
A 17 year evolution of a tribute band dedicated specifically to a bombastic celebration of Arena Rock was definitely a subject we wanted to hit on and we did!  We asked Happy specifically about that evolution and this is what he had to say. “Like many great things it started as a joke and then morphed into a career. It really started out as a night out at the bar jabbing fun, silly costumers and changing some lyrics” but what has evolved from a joke has turned into a full on production with a semi-trailer full of schwag and an official Tour Bus!
“If you don’t like Motley Crue, give it five minutes it will turn into Van Halen and if you don’t like that give it another 5 minutes and it will turn into Queen and if you don’t like that it will turn into Journey and it will turn into AC/DC, Alice Cooper”. Happy – HAIRBALL, Lead Guitarist
Tumblr media
*Just some of the personas to expect when witnessing HAIRBALL LIVE!*
From plastic totes and garbage bags through HAIRBALL’s evolution in which they are more than a cover band, or a tribute band.  HAIRBALL does all they can to pay a respectful and true to form homage to the orginials.  Upgrading costumes, guitars, lights, pyro and smoke the show is an all out adrenaline filled night and as Happy states, “If you don’t like Motley Crue, give in five minutes it will turn into Van Halen and if you don’t like give it another 5 minutes and it will turn into Queen and if you don’t like that it will turn into Journey and it will turn into AC/DC, Alice Cooper”.
Performing live with the actual people they portray and pay homage too is one of the biggest compliments that Happy and Hairball as a collective could receive and they have received countless compliments playing with lead singers of RATT, Motley Crue, Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, KISS and many more.  “Having most of the people that we actually portray in our show actually get up and perform with us for a lot of charity events and try and pay it back and do some good has just kind of shown me more why I feel good about honoring them, their music, their spirit, and their personas that they’ve created.” Happy said.

*Just one of the bands Favorite Charities. And ours too*

Do yourself a favor, listen to the interview here, http://bit.ly/2wnwObo and feel the passion, dedication, humility and most of all KICK ASS love for this music how it has always been intended to be viewed.  Straight up ALL OUT and in the famous words of Happy, “Butte, we’re coming and we can hardly wait!”

Unlike in Wellington, the gates opened and the sun shone as well over 50,000 Guns n’ Roses fans streamed into Auckland’s Western Springs Stadium. And also unlike Wellington, the band actually showed up on time, much to the shock and amazement of all who were present.
Yes, just as the sun dipped below the top of the stage, making visibility possible for those of us sitting in the grandstand, the Looney Tunes music reverberated around the stadium and before we knew it Axl, Slash, Duff and the rest of the band were on stage, cranking out It’s So Easy.
I’ll admit to being a bit ambivalent about seeing Guns n’ Roses as for me much of the lustre of their legacy has dissipated over the last 25 years due to all the shenanigans with Axl and his antics, the whole Chinese Democracy debacle, etc. But still as the three original members took the stage, I must admit to getting caught up in the moment…adrenalin was indeed running high…which is the effect great rock and roll should have on the body.
So, are Guns ‘n Roses a great rock and roll band now? There’s little argument that they were in their original configuration thirty years ago when they came along and seemingly single-handedly re-invigorated a seriously lame scene with Appetite For Destruction. For many of us who had given up hope that authentic, gritty rock music, that actually sounded dangerous, would ever be made again amid the crap poseurs such as Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison, Skid Row and their ilk were making, GnR arrived like avenging angels, wiping out all that came before them.
That moment, when they seemed like a band of brothers, united in their mission to save rock and roll and have one hell of a good time along the way, seems like an eternity ago.
But here they are.
I suppose the biggest difference now is that they no longer seem like a band of brothers. Adler and Izzy and one can only speculate on the motivation behind Slash and Duff’s decision to share the stage once again with Axl.
But there they are.
The set list is pretty much the same as has been trotted out earlier and the adrenalin rush quickly subsides after the first few songs.
One thing is immediately clear…Slash is in top form, ready, willing and extremely able to crank out one spine tingling solo after another. Just fifteen or twenty minutes into a set that will last almost three hours and it is obvious that Slash is easily “Man Of The Match”.
Axl, on the other hand has his ups and downs.
Physically, he is not the same performer he was 25 years ago…a lithe body shimmying against his mic stand, making the little girls swoon.
But he seems to be enjoying himself.
Vocally, his voice gets stronger as the evening progresses, holding up much better during the rockers than the ballads. This I Love was especially painful to hear, but then Slash arrived with his double neck axe and saved the day with his wah wah-infused solo during Civil War.
The set was full of covers…tributes, I suppose, to bands of the 70s who made a mark on Axl and company as so we heard snippets or full blown versions of tunes from Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Derek & The Dominos, Johnny Thunders, The Misfits, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney.
For me, the high point was undoubtedly Sweet Child O’ Mine…it was rendered perfectly and exquisitely by all involved.
So, like their brief career as a band, in its original configuration, Guns ‘n Roses’ show was full of highs and lows.
But the highs made up for the lows, and despite the length of the show, they were rarely, if ever, boring. And thanks to Slash, at times, they sounded like what they once were, a great rock and roll band.
