Win a Date Chapter 5 First Date
“I can’t believe you talked me into this.” Claire mutters the next day as she changes into jeans and a long sleeve shirt appropriate for hiking. She still mumbles as she pulls boots on over her think socks.
“It isn't like you are going to be tortured. You are going on a date with a lad looking for a real relationship. Could be worse.” Geillis says with a smile.
“Ugg. Fine but I promise you, if this goes bad, I will never trust you with a blind date again.”
“It will be fine. I've a good feeling.”
“Okay.” He pulls his hiking clothes on. “Murtagh, this lass better be all you promised. If she turns out to be another flighty lass, I will throttle you.” Jamie threatens as he brushes his red curls out and and pulls a ball cap on.
“You won’t be needing to be doing all that. She has been thoughly vetted. So go. Have a good time then you can thank me later.” Jamie rolls his eyes at his Godfather.
“If she is, I will.”
The Overlook at nine. Those were the instructions. She has no idea who she was looking for. He will find you, Gel had assured her. Knowing what she looks like puts him at an advantage. She isn’t sure she likes that. “One date.” She reminds herself. Just one if he is the jerk she fears. More if.. But no. Focus on today. She takes a deep breath and looks around. A beautiful spot with plenty of green grass and wildflowers. She had to admit he had picked a beautiful spot.
He watches her as she looks around. As advertised, she is lovely. He is happy to see the old jeans and shirt, the scuffed boots, the lack of make up, her curly hair hanging free. He smiles when he sees her push it out of her eyes. An opening.
“You need a ball cap lass.” She looks up. He is tall. Very tall. With piercing blue eyes and amazing hair. But his old clothes and casual attitude tell her, he probably isn't who she is waiting for.
“Thank you. I am waiting for someone. My mate Geillis suggests that leaving my hair down and free is better.” She self consciously shrugged.
“It is verra pretty Claire.” A jerk.
“You. You are my date?”
“Aye. Disappointed?”
“No just surprised. You are not who I was expecting…”
“Jamie. James Fraser.”
“Claire Beauchamp.” She offers her hand. He takes it long forgotten manners resurface and he lifts it up and gently kisses the back of it. “Oh.”
“You aren’t who I was expecting either. They told me but..”
“They?”
“My sister and Godfather. They set all these up. Let me know after the fact.”
“Wait! You didn't know what they were about either?” They had started walking.
“Either?”
“Yes, my mate, Geillis, she entered me in your contest without telling me until after. I swore I wouldn’t come if I did win.”
“Yet you are here?” she shrugs. “They dinna tell me until after they chose you.” He grins. “They ken'd I wouldn’t be happy.”
She smiles back. “Better to ask for forgiveness then permission, eh?”
“Aye. Something like that. Were you just as frustrating with your mate?”
“Oh lord yes!” she laughs. “I told her if you turned out to be a jerk, I would never trust her again.”
“Now would you think me a jerk?”
“Actor. I guess I had an idea of exactly what type of person you would be.” She looks fown and steps over the small branch in the path.
“I see. I was guilty of the same. The reason, you see for the contest, my last few dates have been with the same ridiculous type lasses. The want to be seen with me or want other things that wouldn’t lead to a relationship.”
“I admit that I really don’t know who you are.” Ge stops and she does too when she sees he has. “I am sorry about that.”
“Oh please don't be. I am glad.”
“Me too. To meet you. Not the façade. I am meeting you, right?”
“Aye Claire, you are. Wish to rest.” She sinks gratefully into the fallen branch. He joins her.
“I thought I was in shape.” He chuckles.
“You are doing well. So, wish to tell me about yourself?”
“I am a druggist. Own my own store. An only child who lost her parents at age five. Her uncle who raised her died two years ago. Life with my best mate Geillis. She is a nurse. My last serious relationship ended when I found him in bed with one of his students. He was a professor. I spend most evenings watching trashy TV shows with Gel. I haven’t had sex in six no seven months.” She is blushing. “God sorry. I am not after… Ah, please tell me about yourself.”
“I've an older sister, Janet, called Jenny. Our parents still live and work the farm I grew up on. Jenny is married to my best friend Ian. You know my profession. I spend most evenings running lines. But I adore mind numbing trashy telly shows. I have never had a serious relationship. It is hard when the lasses all know who you are. As for sex, it has been 29 years. A virgin. So..” She looks up at him with wide eyes. “Yah. Everyone assumes. The last date I was on, the lass straight out said she wished to take me to bed. I wasn’t interested. Sex for the sake of getting off doesn’t draw me.” He looks across the valley under them.”It has to mean more. Until I find the one who I see a future in, then.. “
“Wow. You surely aren't who I was expecting. I didn’t mean, when I told you..”
“Dinna fash Claire. I know.”
“How do you, in your line of work, keep up the image you need to project?”
“Ah, smoke and mirrors. Pretty lasses on my arm at awards shows. Photographs that seem to show me as a playboy. In reality, I am a farm boy who just wishes to act. To have a lass to partner with, raise a family with, outside the spotlight.”
“Awards. I should know you.”
“Do me a favor, okay. When you Google my name, recall what I told you, eh?”
“I promise.”
“Are you hungry or thirsty Claire. I've stuff in the knapsack for a picnic.”
“Yes please.” He lays it out. They sit and talk about their families. She tells him about traveling with her uncle and all the places she went. About starting Beauchamp Drugs with his investment and many prayers. He tells her of growing up at Lallybroch. Of his wonderful bossy sister. His steady parents. Murtagh, who is his Godfather and conscious. About his families fears when he announced what he wanted to do and their support.
“So we both started our careers with trepidation and family support.” She lays back, looking up to the sky. He sits beside her looking out over the valley.
“Aye. I am sorry about your family.”
“Thank you. It isn’t easy but I am glad Uncle Lamb got to see me make a good start.”
“Aye. I must confess. I knew what you did. Even have a report from a investigator about what a good druggist you are. Good and patient. Kind.”
“You sent people to investigate me?” she turns her eyes to him.
“Not I.” he is blushing.
“Right. You didn’t know.”
“No. Don’t be angry. They were just looking after me. Had to know you were who you portrayed yourself to be.”
“I am not mad. Intrigued. If I didn’t think it would embarrass you, I would look you up now.”
“Thanks. You probably wouldn’t get a signal anyway.”
She pulls out his phone and sees he is right. A shrug. The camera works though. She snaps some pictures of the beauty that surrounds them before turning it to him. “Do you mind?”
“No. You won’t post it on SM will you?”
“No. Not my style. It is just you are very handsome with the sun reflecting off that wonderful hair.” He grins and pulls the cap off. She snaps a few shots.
“My turn.” He turns his own phone’s camera to her. She leans against the stone by where they had stopped and gives him a big smile. “You are quite beautiful Claire.”
“Thanks but I am sure I will find much beautiful lasses on your arm.”
“No. You won’t. Not in my eyes. None that matches you in inner and outer beauty.” Now she is blushing. “May I see you again Claire?”
“Yes. I didn’t think I would be having more then one date with you. But, I do want to see you again.”
“I thought the same. I am glad we were both wrong. May I give you my number? “
“”You may.” She hands him her phone. He enters it and saves it. “So more hiking?”
“No. I am thinking horse back riding. If that is okay?”
“Perfect. I haven’t in awhile but do know how.” She helps gather up the picnic supplies. “Where?”
“I’ve a mate, John. He has some great riding horses. Private, ye ken.”
“Right. I get that. I only have Sunday’s available. That alright?”
“Perfect.” They start down. He gives her John's address. “Say nine?”
“I will be there.”
“Will I hear from you between now and then?”
“You will. I will text you when I get home. Let you know I made it okay.”
“Thank you.” They are back where they meet. “I am glad you took a chance Claire.”
“I am too. Glad you did too “
He takes her hands and kisses their backs. “Until Sunday.”
“Yes. I will text you. “
“Good. Recall don't believe what Google says about me.”
“I won't.” On impulse, she stands on her toes and kisses his cheek. “Goodbye for now Jamie.”
“Good bye Claire.”

(REVIEW) Addons, by Dom Hale
‘Because it is a poem about and in contemporaneity, any achievement it makes is provisional, any ending quickly obsolete.’ In this review, Alex Grafen spends time with the effervescent, improvisational and ‘distressed’ lyrics of Dom Hale’s Addons, out now from brand new imprint Gong Farm.
> Addons is the first publication by Gong Farm, an imprint set up by Tom Crompton and Alex Marsh. Gong Farm grows out of Out Else, which, until recently, held bi-monthly readings at SET in Dalston. Hale read at the first Out Else on 25 April 2019 in a programme that also included Amy Evans Bauer, Luke Roberts, Camilla Isola and Laura Calcagno. Available to buy were copies of summat, short improvised pamphlets with samples of work by the performers of that evening. Addons still wears improvisation on its sleeve: colourful printed letters worm across the front cover, wilfully wonky, inked up to varying degrees. Imperfect repetition down the page serves as a small-scale iteration of the print-run. It also serves as a good précis of the contents.
> The question prompted by the title – Addons to what? – can be answered simply, if a little reductively: Scammer. Scammer, Hale’s long poem, was composed between August 2018 and late 2019, and is, as of writing, forthcoming from the 87 Press. The poems of Addons then are in the unusual situation of a patch release before the game or, to remain within the field suggested by the title, the printer before the computer, the extra cover before the basic insurance policy. The facility of the answer is complicated not only by chronology. It is also complicated by the nature of Scammer, a poem which repeatedly tests the limits of its own coherence. It does so in part by amassing disparate material and discourses. The poem’s final section, ‘The Noughties’, rapidly accumulates references to Pokémon, fluff journalism, Margaret Thatcher and Quentin Blake. The implied hub of these discourses is the poet himself as part exposed nervous receptor, part digestor and regurgitator of environments primarily cultural and political, occasionally technological. A subject-voice emerges with some consistency though with varying degrees of groundedness throughout. Coherence is also challenged by the poem’s evasion of the sort of overarching structure that might serve to marshal its contents. The closest it comes is in the titles of its sections, Bits V, W, X, Y and Z, but these point more to a back-configuration from an endpoint: 'Here I go in alphabetical order / apropos of nothing’. Addons adds on to something completed, but something whose completion was only ever a formality. Because it is a poem about and in contemporaneity, any achievement it makes is provisional, any ending quickly obsolete.
> None of the poems of Addons would have been out of place in Scammer, though some of them see the latter’s concerns and methods pushed in new directions. None of them are as long as the more extended stretches of Scammer, so we have more of a sense of poems in dialogue with a lyric tradition, and more of a sense of poems fizzing briefly into life before collapsing on themselves. Emergent across the poems are distressed lyric personae that offer brief moments of situated life; flashes of exultant anger coruscating out of a background glare; and an earwormish recycling and reworking of the sound and shape of line and phrase. The third of these is perhaps most pronounced in ‘Unjust July', which begins: ‘You up. You up. You up.' It could be a set of pestering questions, a wake-up call announcing the poem’s beginning, but its repetition pushes it towards sheer phonetic surface, like a transcribed birdsong.
> Silliness works in them as an anaesthetic, dislocating a response to a contemporaneity characterised by violent, exploitative capital. Rather than keeping the earnestness nimble by the careful balance of ironies, Hale compresses extremes into frantic proximity:

a focus group of genetically engineered lice
alleviate the housing crisis.
These lines from ‘Minimal Fuss’ highlight the cliché of a ‘housing crisis’ that includes both people struggling with mortgages on second homes and people living on the street. The lice communicate a reality of verminous dwelling, while at the same time tapping into the richly overdetermined ‘vermin' and ‘parasite'. But to stress this is to lose sight of the whimsy and the determining power of sound: the lice are engineered at a precise time to answer the crisis because of rhyme as much as anything else. ‘Focus group' and 'genetically engineered’ might have been automatically generated by a search for roughly contemporary buzzwords, though Google Ngram suggests that while the star of 'focus group’ continues to rise, 'genetically engineered' peaked some time around 2001. If the contingencies of sound and contemporary cliché are formal constraints operative in the poems, constraints countered by a zealous recombination that makes them productive.
> The arrival of the poem is presented as something won from a world and time understood to be anti-poetic. Again in ‘Unjust July', we are told ‘My teeth got chipped. Something / chipped my teeth'. There is a rearrangement of words but also of agency. The chipped tooth is the punishment for speech, for taking too big a bite. But the rearrangement is a movement towards recognition of the punishers and a discovery of poetic ferment and fertility in that identification: ‘despite the economic privation etc, the human imagination starts working, being a kind of uncontrolled horse itself, and its words animate the wood’ (LZ). The poems may collapse on themselves, but, more Whackamole than Chumbawumba, they pop back up again, not only adding to the moment but rebutting it, minor incursions that can turn cliché to birdsong.

Witches have always walked among us, populating societies and storyscapes across the globe for thousands of years. From Circe to Hermione, from Morgan le Fay to Marie Laveau, the witch has long existed in the tales we tell about ladies with strange powers that can harm or heal. And although people of all genders have been considered witches, it is a word that is now usually associated with women.
Throughout most of history, she has been someone to fear, an uncanny Other who threatens our safety or manipulates reality for her own mercurial purposes. She’s a pariah, a persona non grata, a bogeywoman to defeat and discard. Though she has often been deemed a destructive entity, in actuality a witchy woman has historically been far more susceptible to attack than an inflictor of violence herself. As with other “terrifying” outsiders, she occupies a paradoxical role in cultural consciousness as both vicious aggressor and vulnerable prey.
Over the past 150 years or so, however, the witch has done another magic trick, by turning from a fright into a figure of inspiration. She is now as likely to be the heroine of your favorite TV show as she is its villain. She might show up in the form of your Wiccan coworker, or the beloved musician who gives off a sorceress vibe in videos or onstage.
There is also a chance that she is you, and that “witch” is an identity you have taken upon yourself for any number of reasons — heartfelt or flippant, public or private.
Today, more women than ever are choosing the way of the witch, whether literally or symbolically. They’re floating down catwalks and sidewalks in gauzy black clothing and adorning themselves with Pinterest-worthy pentagrams and crystals. They’re filling up movie theaters to watch witchy films, and gathering in back rooms and backyards to do rituals, consult tarot cards and set life-altering intentions. They’re marching in the streets with HEX THE PATRIARCHY placards and casting spells each month to try to constrain the commander-in-chief. Year after year, articles keep proclaiming, “It’s the Season of the Witch!” as journalists try to wrap their heads around the mushrooming witch “trend.”
And all of this begs the question: Why?
Why do witches matter? Why are they seemingly everywhere right now? What, exactly, are they? (And why the hell won’t they go away?)
I get asked such things over and over, and you would think that after a lifetime of studying and writing about witches, as well as hosting a witch-themed podcast and being a practitioner of witchcraft myself, my answers would be succinct.
In fact, I find that the more I work with the witch, the more complex she becomes. Hers is a slippery spirit: try to pin her down, and she’ll only recede further into the deep, dark wood.
I do know this for sure though: show me your witches, and I’ll show you your feelings about women. The fact that the resurgence of feminism and the popularity of the witch are ascending at the same time is no coincidence: the two are reflections of each other.
That said, this current Witch Wave is nothing new. I was a teen in the 1990s, the decade that brought us such pop-occulture as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed and The Craft, not to mention riot grrrls and third-wave feminists who taught me that female power could come in a variety of colors and sexualities. I learned that women could lead a revolution while wearing lipstick and combat boots — and sometimes even a cloak.
But my own witchly awakening came at an even earlier age.
Morganville, New Jersey, where I was raised, was a solidly suburban town, but it retained enough natural land features back then to still feel a little bit scruffy in spots. We had a small patch of woods in our backyard that abutted a horse farm, and the two were separated by a wisp of running water that we could cross via a plank of wood. In one corner of the yard, a giant puddle would form whenever it rained, surrounded by a border of ferns. My older sister, Emily, and I called this spot our Magical Place. That it would vanish and then reappear only added to its mystery. It was a portal to the unknown.
These woods are where I first remember doing magic — entering that state of deep play where imaginative action becomes reality. I would spend hours out there, creating rituals with rocks and sticks, drawing secret symbols in the dirt, losing all track of time. It was a space that felt holy and wild, yet still strangely safe.
As we age, we’re supposed to stop filling our heads with such “nonsense.” Unicorns are to be traded in for Barbie dolls (though both are mythical creatures, to be sure). We lose our tooth fairies, walk away from our wizards. Dragons get slain on the altar of youth.
Most kids grow out of their “magic phase.” I grew further into mine.
My grandma Trudy was a librarian at the West Long Branch Library, which meant I got to spend many an afternoon lurking between the 001.9 and 135 Dewey decimal–sections, reading about Bigfoot and dream interpretation and Nostradamus. I spent countless hours in my room, learning about witches and goddesses, and I loved anything by authors like George MacDonald, Roald Dahl, and Michael Ende — writers fluent in the language of enchantment. Books were my broomstick. They allowed me to fly to other realms where anything was possible.
Though fictional witches were my first guides, I soon discovered that magic was something real people could do. I started frequenting new age shops and experimenting with mass-market paperback spell books from the mall. I was raised Jewish but found myself attracted to belief systems that felt more individualized and mystical and that fully honored the feminine. Eventually I found my way to modern Paganism, a self-directed spiritual path that sustains me to this day. I’m not unique in this trajectory of pivoting away from organized religion and toward something more personal: as of September 2017, more than a quarter of U.S. adults — 27% — now say that they think of themselves as spiritual but not religious, according to Pew Research Center.
Now, I identify both as a witch and with the archetype of the witch overall, and I use the term fluidly. At any given time, I might use the word witch to signify my spiritual beliefs, my supernatural interests or my role as an unapologetically complex, dynamic female in a world that prefers its women to be smiling and still. I use it with equal parts sincerity and salt: with a bow to a rich and often painful history of worldwide witchcraft, and a wink to other members of our not-so-secret society of people who fight from the fringes for the liberty to be our weirdest and most wondrous selves. Magic is made in the margins.
To be clear: you don’t have to practice witchcraft or any other alternative form of spirituality to awaken your own inner witch. You may feel attracted to her symbolism, her style or her stories but are not about to rush out to buy a cauldron or go sing songs to the sky. Maybe you’re more of a nasty woman than a devotee of the Goddess. That’s perfectly fine: the witch belongs to you too.
I remain more convinced than ever that the concept of the witch endures because she transcends literalism and because she has so many dark and sparkling things to teach us. Many people get fixated on the “truth” of the witch, and numerous fine history books attempt to tackle the topic from the angle of so-called factuality. Did people actually believe in magic? They most certainly did and still do. Were the thousands of victims who were killed in the 16th- and 17th-century witch hunts actually witches themselves? Most likely not. Are witches real? Why, yes, you’re reading the words of one. All of these things are true.
But whether or not there were actually women and men who practiced witchcraft in Rome or Lancashire or Salem, say, is less interesting to me than the fact that the idea of witches has remained so evocative and influential and so, well, bewitching in the first place.
In other words, the fact and the fiction of the witch are inextricably linked. Each informs the other and always has. I’m fascinated by how one archetype can encompass so many different facets. The witch is a notorious shape-shifter, and she comes in many guises:
A hag in a pointy hat, cackling madly as she boils a pot of bones.
A scarlet-lipped seductress slipping a potion into the drink of her unsuspecting paramour.
A cross-dressing French revolutionary who hears the voices of angels and saints.
A perfectly coifed suburban housewife, twitching her nose to change her circumstances at will, despite her husband’s protests.
A woman dancing in New York City’s Central Park with her coven to mark the change of the seasons or a new lunar phase.
The witch has a green face and a fleet of flying monkeys. She wears scarves and leather and lace.
She lives in Africa; on the island of Aeaea; in a tower; in a chicken-leg hut; in Peoria, Illinois.
She lurks in the forests of fairy tales, in the gilded frames of paintings, in the plotlines of sitcoms and YA novels, and between the bars of ghostly blues songs.
She is solitary.
She comes in threes.
She’s a member of a coven.
Sometimes she’s a he.
She is stunning, she is hideous, she is insidious, she is ubiquitous.
She is our downfall. She is our deliverance.
Our witches say as much about us as they do about anything else — for better and for worse.
More than anything, though, the witch is a shining and shadowy symbol of female power and a force for subverting the status quo. No matter what form she takes, she remains an electric source of magical agitation that we can all plug into whenever we need a high-voltage charge.
She is also a vessel that contains our conflicting feelings about female power: our fear of it, our desire for it and our hope that it can — and will — grow stronger, despite the flames that are thrown at it.
Whether the witch is depicted as villainous or valorous, she is always a figure of freedom — both its loss and its gain. She is perhaps the only female archetype who is an independent operator. Virgins, whores, daughters, mothers, wives — each of these is defined by whom she is sleeping with or not, the care that she is giving or that is given to her, or some sort of symbiotic debt that she must eventually pay.
The witch owes nothing. That is what makes her dangerous. And that is what makes her divine.
Witches have power on their own terms. They have agency. They create. They praise. They commune with the spiritual realm, freely and free of any mediator.
They metamorphose, and they make things happen. They are change agents whose primary purpose is to transform the world as it is into the world they would like it to be.
This is also why being called a witch and calling oneself a witch are usually two vastly different experiences. In the first case, it’s often an act of degradation, an attack against a perceived threat.
The second is an act of reclamation, an expression of autonomy and pride. Both of these aspects of the archetype are important to keep in mind. They may seem like contradictions, but there is much to glean from their interplay.
The witch is the ultimate feminist icon because she is a fully rounded symbol of female oppression and liberation. She shows us how to tap into our own might and magic, despite the many who try to strip us of our power.
We need her now more than ever.

16. What does your character do for a living? How do theysee their profession? What do they like about it? Dislike?
Braden:Braden is a caravan guard. He loveshaving the opportunity to put his skills to use, to protect people. It’s a good outlet for him, being able toprotect people he actually canprotect. It also gives him anopportunity to travel, something he’s loved since he was young. It was the one good thing about being born toa merchant family. They were alwaystraveling to other towns, even to the big cities, and Braden got a taste for ityoung, even if he never developed a taste for the rest of the merchantlife. He also loves that it gives him theopportunity to meet new people, to talk to them. For most of his life, his best friend, nowhis husband, has been living under a death sentence thanks to his magical gift,and though Declan has long been resigned to that, Braden refuses to giveup. He keeps thinking that if he justtravels to one more new place, talks to one more new person, someone will have to know something thatwill help him save Declan’s life. Ofcourse, that’s the downside, too. Hisjob often takes Braden away from home. And since his time with Declan is already going to be cut short, hehates that his job forces him to cut it shorter still.
Adesina:Adesina runs the shop. Mostly they sellbooks—blank books, ledgers, notepads, loose paper, handwritten books, a fewprinted books from the capital where the big presses are—but they also sellwriting supplies, pens, pencils, quills, inks, and the like, and basicsupplies, as well. She sells works fromlocal artists on consignment and has been known to stock whatever strikes heras something that will sell well. Everyonelaughed when she started carrying honey candy that one of the local beekeepersmade, but it quickly became one of the best-selling products in the store. She’s always had an eye for things like that—thingsof value—both in product and in people. And she’s a talented salesperson, too. She inspires confidence and trust. Her suppliers trust her, and her clients trust her, too. And, she loves what she does. She loves providing space for independent artistswithout patrons to make a living. Sheloves bringing brightness and beauty and life to the small city she livesin. She loves people. There really isn’t much that she doesn’t loveabout her job… except when a client comes in looking for something that isn’talready on the shelf. Something thatwill have to be commissioned. A clientfor Declan…
Declan:Declan is a Binder. This is both who heis and what he does. He binds books—mostof the blank ones, as well as the handwritten ones, are his work. He also does book repairs. This is the easier part of his job and, byfar, the less risky. But a Binder isn’tan ordinary bookbinder. There’s more toit than that. By Binding magic into the booksthat they make, they enable people to change reality. This can mean anything from helping a girlfind her lost dog to rewriting the entire story of a person’s life to rewritingthe fate of an entire town or country. The greater the magic, the greater the price… to the Binder. For every magical work a Binder does, theypay for it in time. A scribbled note tohelp a girl find her lost dog? Maybethat will cost an hour. An eight pagesignature detailing a rise in business or an increase in the output of a farmmight cost a week or even a month. Afull volume could easily cost him a year or more.
But just as using his magic comes with a price, so, too,does not using it. Humans were never meantto wield magic. Many years ago, a groupof ambitious people set out to change that, to harness magic in such a way thathumans could use it without burning themselves to a cinder. They planned to channel the magic through oneof their number, assuring her that the very nature of the spell would protecther, allowing her to channel that magic safely. They lied. They had set her up asa sacrificial lamb, knowing that she would burn herself out in the casting. She found out and altered the spell. The outcome was this: all Bound magic comeswith a price, shortening each Binder’s lifespan as they use it. To refuse to release the magic Bound into one’sbody will result in the magic burning one up from within. No Binder can use magic without channeling itthrough the written medium. To do so wouldburn them out even faster.
And so Declan, like all Binders, is caught in a perpetualconundrum: to use just enough magic to release the pent-up pressure of itinside their bodies without using so much that they trade away their entire lifespan on frivolous things. Most Binderstake only small commissions, weighing and measuring each in a complex cost-benefitanalysis before agreeing to take it on. Many people have running water, cold rooms for food storage, and waterheaters in their homes thanks to small commissions like this. In the bigger cities, there are even rumorsof carriages that run on Binder magic instead of having to be pulled by horsesand other wonderous inventions.
Declan doesn’t weigh and measure his magic quite socarefully. Instead he measures by a differentscale. If he’s going to burn himselfout, he’s going to do it helping as many people as he can… and that is why Adesinadreads so much sending clients his way and will sometimes turn them away whenshe thinks they may ask for too much, and it’s also why Braden risks spending somuch time away from home looking for a cure—both are desperate to do whateverthey can to save Declan from himself.
26. What does your character’s home look like? Personaltaste? Clothing? Hair? Appearance?
Well, they all live together, so that first question is abit easier. ^_~ They live above Adesina’s shop. It’s a modest apartment, but it’s large bysmall city standards. (When a town or asmaller city manages to attract a Binder, they tend to throw the choice realestate their way in the hopes of convincing them to stay.) Downstairs holds the shop and the stockroom. Declan’s workshop is in the back and opens intothe walled-in back garden. It has itsown staircase to the upper floors, as well. There are three floors above the shop. The second floor has most of the communal living space—the dining room,the kitchen, and a room for entertaining. The third floor has two bedrooms—the triad’s room and a guest room— and amore private communal room, and the fourth floor is an attic with a thirdbedroom and its own washroom. It alsohas its own staircase down to the main level that leads down to the back garden. When Declan is having a bad night, or hasbeen working late, he’ll sometimes spend the night up there so he won’t disturbBraden and Adesina.
As for clothing, hair, and appearance… I hate to pull thecop-out answer, but I just got a work incident dumped in my lap that I’m goingto have to go in early to deal with, and I don’t have that entirely sorted yet,because those are usually the last things I think about. -.-;;; I will come back to this one later, if I get it sorted, though!

Dylan Farrow Would Like to Reintroduce Herself

Scouring the fantasy section of her favorite bookstore near the Connecticut farm where she grew up, Dylan Farrow would pick out anything that “promised me dragons,” she says. She loved the fire and destruction of mythical beasts; conspiracy theories involving families plotting against their own kin; and the way women, children, and other small creatures wielded magical powers that made them stronger in those make-believe worlds than they were in our own. “I think it started out as an escape route,” she says. “For any fans of fantasy, whether they’re in my position or not, it’s fun escapism, a way to step outside of yourself and your problems, and, I don’t know, think about dragons for a while.” She pauses to clarify: “I’m not trying to escape who I am—I’m fine with who I am. I mean, it’s taken me a while to get here, but I can say with [some] degree of certainty that I’m okay.”
Still, the first time we talked, late last year, it hadn’t quite sunk in for her that she had her own debut young adult fantasy fiction novel, Hush, on bookshelves like the ones she’d perused as a teenager. In a lot of ways, the release of Hush has served as a debut for the 35-year-old author as well, in her new life as a full-time writer and working mother, defined by no one but herself. After all, for most of her life, Dylan has been known mostly in relation to the salacious scandals that have swirled around her famous family. She became a public figure not by choice, but rather because she was Mia Farrow’s daughter, or Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Ronan Farrow’s sister. “I don’t feel like I have a father,” she says, but at one point her father was Woody Allen, Mia’s boyfriend of about a decade, who’d adopted Dylan as a child. Later, of course, Allen would go on to have an affair with, and then marry, her sister, Soon-Yi Previn. “There’s no support group for people whose sisters marry their fathers,” she says. “Or is he my brother-in-law? And is she my stepmom? I’ve got to joke about it!”

Then there’s the other scandal that she’ll likely never fully escape, now the subject of an HBO investigative documentary series, Allen v. Farrow. In 1992, when Dylan was seven—the same year the Soon-Yi affair blew up—she told her mother that Allen had taken her into an attic crawl space and sexually molested her, as Mia would testify in the ensuing custody battle. It was part of a pattern that Dylan later said went on for as long as she could remember, of Allen getting into bed with her wearing only his underwear, or putting his head in her naked lap. The custody fight was vicious and tore their family apart, estranged Allen from most of his children permanently, and became such a public tabloid spectacle that Dylan remembers having to be sneaked out of the back of her New York City apartment building with a blanket over her head so she could get to school without being snapped by the paparazzi. She still has PTSD from the ordeal.
A report by the Yale-New Haven Hospital Child Sexual Abuse Clinic, whose methods the judge in the custody case questioned as unreliable, concluded that Dylan was not sexually abused and that Dylan was either disturbed and made it up or had been manipulated by her mother. The judge gave Mia full custody, finding that the testimony proved “that Mr. Allen’s behavior toward Dylan was grossly inappropriate and that measures must be taken to protect her.” Allen appealed, but the appellate court agreed with the trial judge’s custody ruling. Although it gave more weight to the Yale-New Haven report, the appeals court found that the overall evidence, while “inconclusive,” “suggest[ed] that the abuse did occur.” New York State child welfare investigators later announced that they’d found no credible evidence of abuse. Several months after the custody decision was announced, a Connecticut state’s attorney announced that he had probable cause to criminally charge Allen but was declining to file charges to spare Dylan the trauma of a court appearance. Criminal charges have never been filed against Allen in the matter, and he continues to maintain his innocence. (Allen declined a request to comment for this article, but he has vociferously and repeatedly denied having molested her, and has pointed to investigations that cleared him of wrongdoing.)

If you know Dylan’s name now, though, it’s probably because in 2014, well before the #MeToo movement, she wrote a New York Times essay about that abuse, calling out Hollywood actors and asking whether they’d be so quick to celebrate Allen’s work had their own daughter been “led into an attic” by him. It wasn’t until her brother Ronan helped expose the misdeeds of Harvey Weinstein that Dylan’s accusations were given much credence. Dylan had emerged from obscurity to become a staunch advocate for survivors of sexual assault. But now she’s ready to emerge from that as simply a writer. “Believe it or not, the stuff that I wrote about in that essay does not encompass the entirety of my existence,” she says. “It’s a small part of 35 years of living.”
In fact, Dylan isn’t even Dylan Farrow’s name anymore. When she was eight, she changed it to a name she prefers to keep private, in order to psychologically distance herself from the events of those tumultuous years. But she’s been using Dylan as a sort of pen name, starting with the 2014 essay, to avoid confusion given that Dylan is the name in all the court documents. Among close friends and family, though, she says, “No one’s called me Dylan since I was 10.”

Reading Hush, it’s impossible not to see Dylan’s story in its themes. The book centers on Shae, a girl who is dealing with a lot and doesn’t really have time for boys. She’s “short but strong,” Dylan says, and she’s also doggedly determined to ferret out the truth—even as adults tell her it’s all in her head. The world she’s living in is falling apart, stricken by drought and a pandemic that Dylan swears she dreamed up well before 2020. A despotic leadership class wields magic to spread fake news, earn tithes, and control the populace. The written word, the people are told, will kill them; the pandemic spreads through ink. And it is only in trying to solve the murder of someone she loves that Shae finds out that she, too, can wield magic. But can she learn how to use it fast enough, when the truth is slipping away and she’s being gaslighted by powerful forces, causing her to question what she knows? Dylan says that of course the themes are partially based on her life, but readers shouldn’t try to draw too many direct parallels. “As I keep having to assert,” she says, “I do know the difference between fiction and reality.”

After being awarded custody in 1993, Mia moved her large family, filled with biological and adopted children, many of them with disabilities, from Manhattan to their country house in Connecticut. Mia was determined to give the kids “the real farm experience,” Dylan says. They had horses, chickens, goats, and a cow who got lonely and tried having sex with everything, including one of the Farrow siblings’ wheelchairs. “It was a busy, noisy life full of children and animals,” Mia says.
Dylan now maintains a happy pandemic pod with her own family on that same farm, 88 acres with hiking and horse trails and a lake. She’s calling via Zoom from a home office with nothing but greenery and sunlight outside her window. Dylan, her husband (she asked that his name not be published), her four-year-old daughter Evangeline (whose name is already all over Mia’s Instagram), their pug Luna, and their English bulldog Nova stay in one house. Her brother Fletcher, who works in tech, and his wife and two daughters live in another. Their mother has a third. When we talked, Ronan and his fiancé, Jon Lovett of Pod Save America, had recently joined them from the West Coast and were staying with Mia.
Dylan’s earliest exposure to fantasy, she says, was a bedtime ritual of her mom reading The Hobbit to the kids. “My mom, I sometimes forget, is actually a really talented actress,” she says. “So she would read the bejesus out of this book, and it was the most epic thing I had ever heard. My mom would narrate and do all the voices. To this day, her rendition of Gollum is like canon tome.” At around age 11, Dylan wrote stories to read aloud to her younger siblings. “She kept them so enthralled,” Mia says. Ronan, two years her junior, says they both read a lot growing up. “Great women writers of fantasy loomed large for both of us—Ursula K. Le Guin, Madeleine L’Engle, and Susan Cooper were all a big deal in our house,” he says. “Dylan had an abiding love of anime, which I only dabbled in.” (Dylan says she also had an abiding love of Lance Bass of *NSync.)

“I loved to play make-believe with Ronan,”Dylan says. “We’d play dress-up, and I’d sometimes let him play Barbies with me, if I was feeling charitable.” They collected pewter Dungeons & Dragons figurines and created a civilization for them. “We developed some pretty elaborate lore,” Ronan says. In her teenage years, Dylan wrote and illustrated a Game of Thrones–style novel, clocking in at “530-something” pages, that she says “was not fit for human consumption.” Its audience of one was her little sister, Quincy. There were dragons. The main character was an elf. There was a war. Some of it took place in space. “Every concept and every crazy notion I needed to express got chucked into the pot, and it went in a million directions and it was garbage,” she says. “I mean, my sister loves it to this day. She still talks about it.” Back then, as an author, Dylan felt supremely confident. “If I thought it was bad, I wouldn’t have written 500 pages,” she says, laughing.
The court hearings of Dylan’s childhood were, in many ways, a prosecution of her so-called “overactive” imagination. She’d described being in the attic with the “dead heads”—“which was literally because I didn’t know the word for mannequin,” she says. “I knew that people thought that I was using my imagination to tell lies,” she continues, but somehow that never affected her desire to write. Nor did Allen being a famous writer influence her in any way, “although it’s probably the reason I never wrote about New York and jazz and May–December romances,” she says.
In her senior year at Bard College, where she was majoring in art and Asian studies, Dylan decided to sign up for an online dating site associated with The Onion. This was in 2007, well before Tinder, “when dinosaurs roamed the Earth,” she says. At first, she wasn’t having much luck. “I signed up and there was, like, an influx of fifty-somethings being like, ‘Age ain’t nothing but a number, right?’ ” she says. “I’m like, ‘You’re barking up the wrong tree.’ ” Then she came across this “adorable” recent graduate living in New York City who described himself as a geek. “So I did the thing I’ve never done before or since, and I sent him a message and flirted with the guy,” she says. “I said, ‘You didn’t mention you were a cute geek.’ Winky-face emoji. I’m turning bright red telling you this.”
They met up at Grand Central Terminal and got pie and coffee, and the conversation never stopped flowing. After graduation, she moved in with him in New York. “He tried to kick me out,”she says. “He told me, ‘You’re finally independent. You should have the experience of having your own place, paying your own rent.’ I’m like,‘That’s really responsible of you, but that sounds like a lot of work.’ ” Dylan got a job as a production assistant at CNN, working the phones and the copy machine at the Nancy Grace show, mainly so she could continue to crash with her boyfriend. She was eventually laid off. “Journalism, it turns out, wasn’t for me. Wrong member of my family,” she says. When her boyfriend got a job offer he couldn’t turn down in South Florida and asked her to join him, she agreed. “In the back of my head, I’m thinking, ‘Well, I’d better get an engagement ring out of this,’ ” she says. And she did. They’ve been together for 14 years, married for 10.
Dylan has been writing stories to entertain her younger siblings since age 11. “She kept them so enthralled,” Mia says.

Dylan spent the following six years in Broward County, living a relatively normal life. She worked for a weight-loss center, and later found a job as a graphic designer. Back at home, she’d write fantasy stories well into the early hours. “That was where I was finding my happy place,” she says. “I sat down with my husband at one point and I said, ‘Look, I spend every morning sitting in my car giving myself this pep talk, like, Today is going to be over at some point. And I can’t live like this.’ ” She did some soul-searching and realized she wanted to become a full-time writer. “My husband was like, ‘Okay, this is important to you. We’ll make it work.’ He’s a champ.”
So she sat down and wrote a novel. Not Hush, but a “casserole” of ideas. “It was about necromancers, set in a Spanish Inquisition–like setting,” she says. “It was maybe a little anti-religion; they were heretics.” Her protagonist was too old for YA, but the story didn’t exactly work for a broader fantasy audience either. “I wound up learning a lot about, you know, what sort of book gets picked up by publishers,” she says, laughing.
Around 2014, Dylan and her husband decided to move back northeast to Connecticut. Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine had come out to critical praise the previous year, garnering two Golden Globe and three Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Screenplay for Allen. The sexual assault allegation, the custody battle, and leaving Manhattan had all happened in 1992 and 1993. Dylan had started fourth grade in Connecticut, thinking she’d never have to worry about any of it again, except for the rare occasions when her mom went to court. “I sort of treated it as out of sight, out of mind, and I did that for about 20 years,” she says. “But then he was up for an Academy Award, and no one cared.
We were in the process of relocating, and I snapped and went crazy and the essay happened.” When she told someone close to her that she was thinking about speaking out, he said, “Well, why? Nobody cares.” When she told her therapist that “maybe this is something, someday, you know, nebulously, abstractly I’m considering,” he told her that it was a terrible idea and she’d undo all the progress she’d made.“Obviously, I didn’t listen to those people,” she says. “The thing is, in a lot of ways, they were wrong. But in a lot of [other] ways, they were right. In 2014, nobody really did give a crap. And I did undo all the progress I’d made.”
The essay caused a stir, but Allen kept his Academy Award nomination, and the star of Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett, won the Oscar for Best Actress. Meanwhile, Dylan had opened Pandora’s box. “I had to develop an entirely new skill set with different coping mechanisms based around having spoken out and the aftermath of that,” she says. “The difference was, I was doing this on my own terms.” She still struggles at times, “but on the whole, it does feel healthier to cope with it on that level rather than just ignore it. I think it’s also more helpful to the people in my life: my husband, my family, my friends. They know what’s going on now. I’m not just freaking out because I saw some random movie poster. There’s a method to the madness.”

Mia can see a huge difference. “She’s evolved from being a shy child to being much more assertive. And a lot of it has to do with coming out with her personal story and feeling less like a victim,” she says. “I do know that as a mother, my job, among other jobs, is and always has been to support her in whatever she needs. I’ve stood by her all these years, and I will continue to do so.”
Dylan has only seen three of Allen’s movies: 1973’s Sleeper (“As a kid, I think it was framed as, ‘Do you want to see Daddy eat a rubber glove?’ and I was like, ‘Oh yeah!’ ”) and two others, Alice and The Purple Rose of Cairo, neither of which Allen appears in onscreen. According to IMDb, Dylan appears in Alice, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and New York Stories, “which is really trippy,” she says, “because I don’t remember being in them.” For her Alice appearance, she visited her mom on set, ran up to hug her and say “hi,” and then ran off. She remembers the moment, but not being filmed. She also remembers being at the circus with two kids who kept putting their Cracker Jack in her popcorn. Years later, when she saw the movie, she realized she was watching herself. “It was weird, like seeing my memory, but with different people,” she says.
Triggers are all around her, and whether they’ll set her off depends on how she is doing emotionally that day. She’ll freeze up if she’s scrolling through a news feed and sees a face with thick glasses, or if she overhears jazz music. In the past, such things could leave her curled up in a fetal position. During a 2018 TV interview with Gayle King, Dylan burst out crying after being shown a recording of Allen denying the allegation. It hasn’t gotten better overnight—“It’s a process,” she says—but Dylan has been steadily improving since speaking out. “I try to take the mindset that I have a 100 percent success rate of getting through every single one of the panic attacks I’ve ever had; none of them have killed me.” In some ways, she says, it’s been a blessing to be Evangeline’s mother in this fraught time, to have to care for a small child and to know she has to hold it together for her. “My top priority is obviously making sure that my daughter is always safe, healthy, and loved,” she says. Asked what she says when others assert that Allen was just acting as a doting father, Dylan replies: “Let him watch your kid.”
It still baffles her when Allen’s fans come after her on Twitter, saying she’s lying. “This is something that I’m literally telling you happened to me. Who are you to say, ‘No, it didn’t’? I was there, you weren’t. Go away.” Still, it’s amazing to her that some people peddle the idea that her mother brainwashed her to believe she was molested and also to have PTSD from it—something she says Mia would have needed “military-grade torture equipment” to pull off. “It’s crazy that for some people, the idea that I was brainwashed is somehow easier to swallow than child sexual abuse,” she says.
“I guess I’m just way more vindictive than anybody gave me credit for,” Dylan says. “And I say that because it’s not entirely a bad thing. Vindictive women can get stuff done.”

Dylan didn’t tell her mother and Ronan that she was going to write the essay until she already knew she was going to publish it. “I kind of wanted to wait until there were no take-backsies before I really discussed it with them, because I wasn’t sure how they were going to react,” she says. It was the first time she’d told Ronan what had happened in detail. “And he started crying, which I didn’t really expect,” she says. “He’s not super sentimental.” Even for Ronan, #MeToo warrior that he is now, there was a period of adjustment, of separating the family desire to put the past behind them with his sister’s need to expose her wounds in order to heal them. They talked often and at length, and in 2016, when Allen’s film Café Society was opening the Cannes Film Festival, Ronan wrote his own essay supporting his sister’s claims for The Hollywood Reporter. It was loud and splashy, and dominated all the press for Allen’s film. And in its own way, it led to Ronan chasing down the stories of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assaults. “Dylan was absolutely a voice of conscience on this issue,” Ronan said by email. “I learned a lot, watching her come forward with her story, and maintain it consistently, year after year—even when I and others around her weren’t sure it was worth the blowback.”
“Without Ronan’s support, I probably would’ve felt completely adrift,” Dylan says. “He’s one of the most important people in my life.” What she didn’t realize was just how important those conversations would be to her brother and others, through his work.
“I thought he was just, like, calling me. It wasn’t until I read his book that I realized I was actually having this huge impact on him.” It bothered her, though, that her essay from 2014 “was kind of brushed off and ignored or sidelined or outright stomped into the dust,” but when her brother said the exact same thing two years later, suddenly people’s ears perked up. “I got salty at Ronan, because I was like, ‘Do people really need a white man to say the exact same thing to get people to listen?’ ”
So in 2017, in the wake of #MeToo, she wrote a second incendiary essay, this time for the Los Angeles Times, which questioned how all these men could be taken to task, but Woody Allen was still making movies. “[At age seven,] I wasn’t, obviously, given a platform, and I was not in an emotional state to take advantage of a platform. I was literally a child,” she says. “And it’s easy when you are a white man with a considerable amount of clout, power, and wealth to silence a voice like that, pin the blame on my mom, and spin the story for 20-plus years.” The good thing, though, is that Dylan has begun to recognize her own power. “I guess I’m just way more vindictive than anybody gave me credit for,” she says. “And I say that because it’s not entirely a bad thing. Vindictive women can get stuff done.”

In the end, Hush hasn’t been an escape route for Dylan, but rather a way forward out of the darkness that has clouded her existence for so long. After her first novel about the necromancers failed to find a publisher, she decided to start over, “drawing on the themes and ideas that I was seeing percolating in the world around me,” she says. In 2018, as now, fake news and propaganda were hot topics, as was a general distrust of the system. “I never thought I would be writing about a dystopia in a climate where that would feel relatable,” she says. When Mia read it, she saw her daughter in Shae. “I see Dylan’s courage against monstrous thoughts and monstrous people and powerful foes,” she says. “Being disbelieved is part of the assault.” While she says she can’t speak for her daughter, Mia thinks that in writing the book, Dylan was able to reckon with her past in a way that was “bearable,” by creating a story “which is and isn’t about her.”

As of mid-January, Dylan was nearly finished writing the sequel to Hush, with only half of the final chapter and the epilogue to go. She’s found that it’s progressing faster and is more enjoyable this time around, because she no longer has the terror of being a debut novelist who, before this, “was a known quantity for something very specific—and something with a lot of morbid curiosity around it.”
She knows that curiosity will always be there. “I can’t completely disentangle myself from it,” she says. And the publicity for this book has meant a lot of “talking about the thing that I like least in the world. It’s always going to be the elephant in the room.” But no amount of fear can take away the pleasure of holding her book in her hands, and knowing that someone else might happen across it at a bookstore and take it off the shelf. Her simple hope is that “somebody will read it and connect to it and enjoy it and maybe not take it so seriously.”

Economic Policy 1: Collectivisation
By 1928, the USSR was 20 million tons of grain short to feed the towns. Industrialisation was creating even more towns, increasing this problem.
So in order to feed his industrial workforce Stalin needed to revolutionise agriculture.
Although Collectivisation is sometimes discussed as a separate policy in Stalin’s Russia, it really is a fundamental part of his programme of industrialization set out in the 5-year plans:
Stalin needed to:
Raise revenue to fund industrial revolution. The best way of doing this was by exporting grain abroad.
Feed workers in the towns
To do both of these he needed to :
Maximize the production of grain by revolutionizing the METHODS of agriculture. Traditional Russian farming techniques were poor. Small plots of land meant that innovations such as fertilizer and tractors could not be used. Many peasants were still using horse drawn ploughs.
He also needed to
Control the production. Since the NEP ,the Kulaks (wealthier peasants) had controlled prices of grain, and had hoarded their surplus to ensure that prices stayed high (because high demand and low supply = high prices!).
Stalin needed to ensure that the price of grain was cheap, so workers in the town could afford to buy grain without Stalin having to increase wages. So he needed to destroy the power of the Kulaks to control grain prices. Stalin may also have wanted to destroy the Kulaks for ideological reasons – having a class of ‘agricultural capitalists’ didn’t really fit with Communist ideas!
Stalin’s plan was to join small farms into huge collectives, called Kolkhoz. The key features of these Kolkhoz were:
Peasants would farm the land, using machinery from the state [ Tractors loaned from Motor Tractor Stations (MTS) ]
Animals and tools were to be pooled together
They would receive a wage for doing this
90% of the produce would be sold to the state cheaply
The 10% surplus was to feed the Kolkhoz - it could not be sold privately for profit
Peasants could keep a small plot of land around their house for their own use
At first, collectivization was not enforced, but promoted through propaganda. (Look at the poster above)
However, many peasants resisted.(They disliked the idea that the farms were under the control of local Communist leader)
Kulaks resisted the policy; when the Red guards came to seize their grains and sent them to labour camps; many burned their crops and killed their animals.
The impact of Collectivisation:
Countryside was in chaos
Anyone who objected was sent to labour camps in Siberia.
Millions of peasants were forced off the land into industry in the cities.
Probably about 10million died of starvation
Food production fell and there was a famine in 1932-33
Many died in Kazakhstan and Ukraine, Russia’s richest agricultural region
Despite such shortages, Stalin continued to force collectivization. He also continued to seize grain; resulting in a rise in grain collection from 10.8 million tons in 1928-9 to 22.8 million tons in 1931-2. This obviously improved standards of living in the towns. Stalin also continued to sell grain abroad. Even in the worst years of the famine like in 1932, the country exported 1.73 million tons and only slightly less in the next year.
By 1934 there were no Kulaks left.
By 1937 most peasants were using tractors, provided by Machine Tractor Stations supplied by the state
By 1941 almost all agricultural land was organized into collectives. The system of differentiation was introduced whereby people with special skills were given rewards and benefits in form of housing.
Stalin also encouraged education for peasants on the Kolkhoz
Economic policy 2: Industrialisation
Stalin aimed to modernise USSR through a series of Five-year plans.
The Five Year Plans - The First Plan 1928-1933
E.g coal, steel, oil, gas
New dams and hydro-electric plants were built to create the energy needed for the new industries – e.g Belomor Canal, on which 100,000 workers died.
Prioritising heavy industry created problems because there were huge shortage of consumer goods such as clothes
Targets set by GOSPLAN (state planning commission)
Targets were set for every industry, each region, each mine and factory, each foreman and even every worker! This was thought necessary because most industrial workers were former peasants, who were used to working at their own speed.
Failure to meet targets resulted in an increase in the target and/or a wage cut!
Focus on targets meant managers were more interested in quantity than quality, so there was a lot of waste and a lot of accidents, as safety standards were ignored
Absenteeism or lateness was forbidden
Workers who took time off were likely to be fined, or to lose their job – and therefore their houses
From 1929 Factories operated 24/7 and workers took time off on a rota system
From 1932 workers had to have official permission to change jobs or move area. This probably suggests that some workers were getting restless about the unachievable targets and trying to leave their jobs.
Wages actually decreased between 1928-1937
Although the plan was scheduled to last 5 years, propaganda urged workers to complete targets in 4!
Stakhanovism campaign. Alexei Stakhanov was a minor who organized his team to cut 102 tons of coal in a shift – his target was 7 tons! (1934). He was used as propaganda. Workers who exceeded targets received a medal, or higher wages - Stakhanov workers could earn 1,500 to 2,000 rubles or more a month, as compared with the average monthly wage of 250 roubles. But by 1934, the government stopped promoting Stakhanovism, which suggests they knew such propaganda was ineffective.
E.g coal increased from 35.4 million tons to 64.3m tons between 1928 and 1933 (see source 7), steel rose from 4 to 18 million tones
By 1938 had overtaken Britain and Germany in industrial output.
Towns created out of nothing such as Magnitogorsk in the Urals, which grew to 250,000 people.
Such rapid growth of towns created shortages – so rationing was introduced. Housing was also poor. Many families lived in 2 rooms. Petty crimes and hooliganism were fairly common in these cities.
Huge expansion in industry created shortage of skilled workers by 1932 so growth of industry had to slow down
In 1932 Stalin announced the plan had achieved its targets a year early and the 2nd plan was announced!
The Second 5-Year Plan: 1932 (33) -1938
It continued to develop heavy industry but branched out into new areas.
The shortage of workers was addressed by encouraging women into work. By 1937 40% of the industrial workforce was women, compared to 28% in 1927. As a result, there was greater equality between men and women in Russia than other countries, and this was reinforced through propaganda, showing men and women as equal partners in the socialist struggle. But no women ever held high-office in Stalin’s government, and the state did encourage marriage and motherhood.
Development of new industries was somewhat undermined by the purge of capitalists that had taken place since 1919 and the purge intellectuals that Stalin carried out in the 1930s (you have another information sheet on this). Foreign experts and engineers had to be recruited.
There was also a return to inequality in society; to improve production, managers, scientists and party bosses were given much higher standards of living as incentives – they earned more bonuses and had perks such as holidays in state-run resorts.
The Third 5-Year Plan: 1938-1941
Planned to produce more consumer goods, such as radios and bicycles, to raise the quality of life of Russian people. There was also a plan to improve the quality, rather than just the quantity, of goods produced.
In reality much industry was directed towards defence.
Nevertheless, there were economic improvements: Rationing came to an end and free education and medicine were made available to more and more of the population.
Any economic growth was interrupted in June 1941 when the German army invaded Russia. The Russians managed to resist the German invasion single-handedly until June 1944 D-Day landings.

THREE TALENTED WOMEN
A pleasant evening last night.
Began with a 6 pm manicure with Tammy. Tammy always good company.
Then to Aqua for Dueling Bartenders. No Dueling Bartenders. Someone was sick so the show was cancelled.
Walked around the corner to the Side Bar looking for David. He was there.
I like David. Good company. Extremely intelligent.
Laurie Tee showed up. Love Laurie! When she began her radio show several months back on 105.7 FM, I joined her for a few weeks. Thought I might help her get started. She never had done a radio show before.
She did not need me. Laurie is a natural talent.
She also functions as stage host for most of Aqua’s functions. Last night it was to be the Drag Show later in the evening. She also does Aqua Idol wednesday nights.
The three of us chatted a while. Then I left, not sure where I was heading. Ended up at Antonia’s for dinner.
The lovely Nicolle bartending. Her diet doing well. Thirty six pounds so far! Keep it up Nicolle!
My diet moving along. Thirteen pounds. Enjoyed lamb chops last night. Perfect for an Atkins type diet.
At some point, two ladies sat next to me at the bar. Soon to be followed by a third. I was fortune. All three lovely and interesting.
Ann and Christine are partners. Snowbirds. Three months a year in Key West. Otherwise live in New Jersey.
Ann formerly in public relations in New York City. Mother of two, grandmother to one.
Ann and Christine live together on a horse farm in New Jersey. Christine has been involved working with thoroughbred horses for 25 years. The ladies also raise angus beef.
A special way of living.
Poochy the third lady. She arrived a bit later. Her for real name Margaret Buchholz. A writer of some renown.
She has published 8 books. I am impressed! The New York Times wrote favorably of her Great Storms of the Jersey Shore. Most of her works involve the Jersey Shore in one fashion or another.
She spent some time back when editing a small seasonal newspaper on Long Beach Island where she grew up.
Poochy lives alone. However, she shares the Key West snowbird home with her friends Ann and Christine.
Bob Woods was at the other end of the bar. He is participating in Aqua Idol this year. Still not eliminated.
A great voice. He has an excellent chance of going all the way.

I have always been impressed with how Monroe County handles the mosquito problem. Key West itself and a few keys north are constantly sprayed, properties inspected, etc.
Dengue fever is rare. Every several years, a case or two. Always concerns me.
The County announced its first case in years yesterday. A man infected with dengue fever by a mosquito. He has been treated and is expected to make a full recovery.
Some Trump/coronavirus observations.
Nero fiddled. Trump plays golf. Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Trump plays golf as America coughs its way into an epidemic.
The public health hazard is Trump himself. He is sacrificing the health of the people of the United States for his vainglory.
Trump bears many titles. President, Commander in Chief, etc. Another should be added. Germaphobe in Chief.
Sources privately say he is terrified about getting the virus: “Donald is a famous germaphobe. He hates it if someone is eating nachos and dips a chip back in after taking a bite.” He calls it “double dipping.”
The word is Trump is in a melt down because of the virus.
Last week, Trump told aides he was afraid journalists would try to purposefully contract coronavirus to give it to him on Air Force One.
He also asked the Secret Service to set up a screening program and bar anyone who has a cough from White House grounds.
It is well known that Trump compares coronavirus to the flu.
The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson wrote yesterday, “Trump’s solipsistic response to the coronavirus crisis offers overwhelming proof, if any more were needed, that it was a catastrophic mistake to give an egomanical reality-television star such power and responsibility. We are all paying the price.”

Italy unannounced yesterday it has 9,172 cases, 463 dead.
Italy further announced it was expanding its lockdown of northern Italy to encompass all of Italy. Bold and unprecedented.
The government has asked its citizens if possible to remain at home three weeks.
I saw on TV yesterday a video of a 16 year old girl on the Grand Princess off the coast of California. She looked great. She thought everything was kumbaya.
I was impressed.
Today a different story has been reported.
Margaret Bartlett is a 77 year old Brit who is on board. She said people were fighting over “rotten” food and were “stir crazy.” Specifically, “The food is rotten and terrible and we have to fight for it.”
The stock market down 2,000 points yesterday. A major fall. I believe the biggest one day fall since the Great Depression of 1929.
At 10 this morning, the market is rallying. Up 600 points.
Don’t get excited. It generally goes up the day after a big fall only to nose dive again the next day.

How Does a Wife Cope With Infidelity And Divorce? Here’s How I Did
The morning after our divorce negotiations began one of the horses on our farm became trapped in wire. The mare was starting to panic and the more she moved, the harder the wire cut into her flesh.
Fence fixing, indeed most tasks mechanical, had been my husband’s job. But he was gone. Broken boards swung from rusty nails and wobbly fence posts surrendered to buffeting winds.
The small section of high tensile wire in the back pasture had collapsed under the weight of a fallen tree where our herd of horses grazed. The mare had stumbled onto it and her hind legs were ensnared. I called my husband’s cell once, twice, three times.
No answer.
I asked my teenaged daughter, Isabelle, to get wire cutters. More than 20 agonizing minutes later she brought back three wrenches. We’re on our own, I thought. Then I stopped thinking and let my hands move. I lifted each trapped hoof, talking quietly to the horse in what I hoped were soothing tones. When the last loop of wire came off and she was freed the mare ran back to the barn.
Living on my own on a farm in rural Maryland wasn’t in the cards. But that is what happened after my husband fell in love with another woman and moved away with her. My daughter and I remain in the marital home as tenants with an absent landlord, fixing what we can, living with what we can’t.
When our courtship began 25 years ago, my husband drove me to the farm for the first time. I surveyed the herd of horses grazing in paddocks of billowing orchard grass, the green scape of wooded foothills cresting the Appalachian Trail. My decision was not how I would live there, but when. With him.
I ignored the red flags that should have stopped me at the wedding altar; bounced checks, a quick temper, alcoholism. He eventually chose sobriety, which fixed many problems, but not all.
Our marital history was writ large with financial lapses – unpaid bills, debts, and secrecy. We always managed to soldier on after each expensive hiccup. Then I found out about the tax bill. We had amassed $40,000 in debt because he didn’t file our tax returns for several years and never told anyone.
When the notification from the Internal Revenue Service arrived via certified mail my response was to unleash a fury of rage and hateful words. After a few days of silence I attempted to repair the damage. I said what I hoped were the right words – that I was sorry for what I said; we’d dig ourselves out, come up with a plan somehow.
He said, “This marriage is no longer a priority for me.”
He spoke as if he had practiced each word in front of a mirror to achieve a certain tonal quality of indifference. My initial response was confusion: why he was addressing me as if I was a house guest who overstayed her welcome?
This was the same husband with the sunlit hair who reached for me and spoke in a singsong voice when he was happy; who painted clouds on our ceiling and built a giant bug out of plaster for our daughter to take to school for “Show and Tell.”
I reasoned that with work and patience we would find our cadence as a couple again. I was wrong.
His affair partner was an acquaintance I had invited to Thanksgiving dinner in a charitable impulse. I first noted her as a middle-aged jovial divorcee who stood in the sunlight at an equestrian event talking to my husband.
I thought to myself how unfortunate it was that the sun’s glare revealed pocks in her pale skin. I remember walking over and interrupting their conversation to tell my husband it was time to go home.
She inspired nothing in me beyond a sense of sympathy as a matronly woman trying to look young, someone who seemed alone and in need of friends. The ensuing months she sat at our family dinner table numerous times, stayed in our home during a snowstorm and rode our ponies across our hill in the spring.
I sensed her envy, that grinding emotion of being on the sidelines of something joyful. I enjoyed her company because my husband was happy when she was there. When he was happy, our family was happy.
In looking back I feel a tug of empathy for the person I was – a wife so comfortable in the bonds of marriage that betrayal was unthinkable.
I laughed it off when neighbors and friends suggested there seemed to be more to her friendship with our family. I even jokingly called her “the other wife.” Then I found the emails, the texts and gift receipts.
Chronology became important.
When was the exact moment they became a secret?
When did she decide to become both my friend and lover to my husband?
Friends later observed they saw it all along – the stolen glances exchanged, the smoldering conversations on the sidelines of social events.
Where had I been while my marriage unraveled?
My sleuthing, a typical response to infidelity trauma, turned up a trove of besotted emails, photos and dinner dates. A cell phone bill revealed the repeated calls to the same number – hers.
There were on average 20 calls a day to each other, sometimes even after the other woman and I had lunch or tea together. Even on Christmas Day, at 8:05 in the morning before we got up to open our presents, he sneaked away to call her.
After the divorce papers were filed, anger became my drug of choice.
I specialized in rage texting at 2 am, morphing into a high octane Dorothy Parker, hurling insults and unflattering remarks about the other woman, picking apart her choice of haircut, her unfortunate hips, and tight-fitting dresses.
My response to the abandonment of love was to become unlovable.
My husband, on the other hand, was audaciously remade as if he had been through an episode of “Queer Eye.”
The man who never shaved and wore only muck boots suddenly shifted into metrosexual country squire — skinny jeans, a vast collection of Fedora hats, Italian leather shoes, and enough tweed jackets to attire an entire tea party at Downton Abbey.
“His soul is hijacked,” I observed to my friend, Melissa. “Maybe what you had in those early years was the best of him, and now it’s all spent,” she said. That was some consolation; that I was loved by a man who tried to be good until his resources ran out.
Or perhaps he saw an opportunity to rewrite himself, sanitize the mistakes of the past. The other woman was not me, the one who bore witness to his flaws, mistakes, the private vanities, habits, and quirks that reveal themselves over time.
The unwitting matchmaker, I laid before him the opportunity to turn away from the wife who held all his broken pieces and tried to love him anyway.
How does a wife cope with infidelity and divorce?
I searched for a manual, then devised my own plan.
First, find your people. Some friends and family may not possess the emotional skillset to provide ample emotional support during a divorce. No one knocked on my door with a casserole or offered to mow my lawn as one might a widow who lost their spouse to a heart attack or car accident.
My divorce was an awkward circumstance for friends and colleagues to navigate. Most condemned my ex privately and one friend, whom I will never forget, banned my ex’s affair partner from attending an event he hosted.
This was the hardest habit for me to kick post-infidelity; that is, the craving to foster outrage by reciting my increasingly tiresome narrative of loss and betrayal until a therapist suggested my anger was becoming toxic.
My arc of healing also ascended from unlikely sources: online forums with strangers; the seduction of an old boyfriend; a trip to Seattle where I found a quiet Airbnb to read and think; from my sister who was recovering from the betrayal of her partner.
Second, keep moving and eventually, the weird stuff feels manageable. I developed a playlist. Music, in my case hard rock from the 1990s, helped rewire my anxiety during divorce negotiations. Raucous electric guitars, percussive anthems all helped focus my brain beyond the spiral of emotions that were overwhelming at times. I also joined a gym and lost 30 pounds.
Third, get out of your comfort zone. I tried a new hairstyle and started online dating. Initially, it was an awkward phase, dwelling between marital death and single life. I treated it as an adventure, commuting from my rural valley to the evening cacophony of the city where I met a date for drinks or dinner, sometimes more.
I watched the dawn fold over the rooftops of the urban landscape, thinking that just 45 miles away my horses were waiting for breakfast, the dogs needed to be let out for a pee, the barn cats waited for their kibble. Yet here I lay next to a man with nothing in his refrigerator but Red Bull and mayonnaise.
Look for context. It helps to know infidelity is not about you. The data and information about who cheats and why bear this out. My ex’s decision to have an affair and abandon the marriage was about him, not me.
Yet most articles about infidelity typically dwell on the question of repair and reconciliation within the marriage.
Sometimes there is no fix.
One can wake up and find themselves married to a stranger who starts dating and there’s no reasonable explanation for it. My ex never admitted to any affair, not in divorce court papers, or even as people tagged him and the affair partner in Facebook photos.
Perhaps his silence came from a place of shame. My ex hated cheaters until he became one.
Eventually, the affair partner doesn’t matter. Trust me on this. I came to realize my anger throughout divorce fueled their love triangle. A therapist observed that my ex and the other woman loved the noise of my fury.
The vengeful ex-wife specter offered a convenient “victim status” to claim and provided a distraction as they transitioned from an illicit affair to a committed relationship in which realities such as finances, family, friends come into play.
In the initial phase of my grief, it was hard to follow the often expressed advice that the best revenge is living a good life.
And then I came to realize I was enjoying life without my spouse around; that I could travel unencumbered, parent my daughter the way I wanted and own my financial future.
Use free legal resources that may be available at your local courthouse.
I saved myself thousands of dollars filing for my own divorce after getting a marital settlement agreement which took the better part of a year to negotiate. Use the money you save to spend on self-care, which is also essential to healing.
Time and patience are your warriors.
Healing from betrayal also forces one to acknowledge that grief is a process and one never reaches the end of it.
It also requires a mindful commitment to dismantle the broken self and make room for the new one that emerges, cracked open and yet not quite whole. I am no longer that woman who sat down in the grass and decided to marry a man for all the wrong reasons. I am someone else, someone still becoming.
Love again.
I worry about choosing a wrong partner again, someone who will bring about another circumstance of abandonment. Yet being vulnerable to the possibility of love is our reckoning as humans. Rarely are we wired to accept any other choice but to love and be loved again at our own peril.
I write as if divorce and infidelity are in the rearview mirror. It is not.
My ex-husband and I pass each other in the paddocks or the barn during the course of any day on the farm, courteous as old enemies after the peace treaty is signed.
We meet for co-parenting counseling. We exchange texts about farm chores and our daughter’s schedule. The anger ebbed, I am at the place where I thought I’d never arrive – acceptance.
Sometimes the entrenched intimacies of our old marriage seem as if they could be summoned forth if only the right words or opportunity presented itself.
I often pass my hand over a scar on my thigh where several years before a mare kicked me backwards into the dirt, tearing open the muscle. The skin is now puckered and drawn, shaped like the mouth of an old warrior. I am proud flesh closing over a healed wound.
I am looking for a new place to live. My task is to turn from all that has been familiar — the fiery red maples that light up in autumn now jeweled with leaf buds.
My soul is scattered on the farm where I spent my married life. It is caught in the sudden flight of sparrows, swooping from the ground in a motion like silvery fish snared in the net; among wild ducks that argue among themselves as they float in aimless patterns on the pond.
The ancient bank barn braced against mountain. Another broken board strays from the paddock fence line and horses within it forage for grass.
Everything constantly changes and yet remains fixed in place as the seasons pass. My former father in law died over the summer and we spread his ashes on the farm. We said goodbye to the past and each other.
I do not consider the future beyond what is in front of me — our child, a dead love, a divorce.
I cannot outrun this fate, nor abandon it. I can only retreat to the barn at dusk, where I find my favorite pony and throw a saddle on his back.
We hack toward a band of distant horizon, a cloud cluster the color of fire. So long as we are moving the destination no longer matters.
When the sky gets dark, I turn my gelding back to the farm, that hollow place where something was and no longer is.
