Metal Hammer - 1998
"We don't want to gather dust in Germany," said singer Till Lindemann before the release of the successful album Sehnsucht, and the bold words were followed by deeds. After sold-out concerts in Germany's biggest halls, gigs in other European countries and a US tour made it clear that Rammstein is on the way to becoming a global affair.
Richard, what was the most important impression that this US tour left on you?
The most important finding for me was that we were able to convince live without all the pyro effects. I found that very good. I'm more the musical representative in the band, and it was a good feeling to limit myself to the music again and to notice that it seems easy.
Why did you have to do without most of the effects?
The problem was that you're dealing with different officials from state to state. Every state has different laws, and people there take their jobs damn seriously. Worse even than in Germany. If, as in our case, they are foreigners, nothing works. In Santa Ana (California), for example, all our pyro gear was confiscated. We have learned that you simply cannot prepare something like this from Germany.
What was finally possible?
Almost nothing. The boat number, the burning coat, but only rarely - and that's about it. Still, people thought it was cool. That was good, you can tell that there is a substance. It was a good experience for me, I don't want the whole thing to degenerate into a fire circus anyway.
Does this experience have any impact on shows in Germany?
No, not that. It was just an affirmation. I'm not against the Show, but when you're in opposition, say five people are for and one is against, you just have to overreact. I always have to exaggerate, although of course I also like big shows. I like a mix.
How was the relationship with KMFDM, who were already in the support act here in Germany?
Very well. It's really very rare, but this time it kind of formed a friendship and we'll probably do something together again in the future. Remixes and stories like that.
What is it about the much-described American openness?
When people go out, they want to have a good time. They don't see it as narrowly as the Germans. Everything is much more emotional there.
Were there, as you are used to from here, political discussions?
Not at all.
Was that the most positive difference compared to Europe?
The women. They are more open and come to you more quickly. That's really the only thing I noticed. Then of course the climate and landscapes. What totally sucks is the food. I need some black bread too. Starting every morning with a burger and egg is really too much for me.
Aside from the "elementary" things in life...
As a musician you enjoy a different status than in Europe, you are much more respected. As a guitarist you are a completely different person anyway. Germany is more of a singer-oriented country, in the USA they are more into guitarists. That was really a good feeling. I would be lying if I said it wasn't.
On the US tour you played in front of 1000 to 1500 people on average. Was the return to clubs a kind of throwback to earlier times?
It's always good to find out what it's like to play in small clubs. It is fun. Fun in the sense that you have to convince people. That's actually the beauty of it. If you play in front of 4000 people who know everything anyway, it's boring in the long run. But finding new people is what's really exciting. When it works, that's just great.
Were there also concerts that were less successful?
Basically there were no big differences. They were all good except for the one in Santa Ana. We played in an old striptease club where people sat at the table and ate their steaks. That was a little stiff. The best was in Los Angeles on the last day, the reactions there were really good.
You signed with Slash Records (London). How did your first encounters with people from your US company go?
The boss, Bob Biggs, is a totally chilled guy, a very easygoing one. When we were in Los Angeles he invited us and some journalists to his house and the first thing he did was go to bed and get a nap. (Laughs) I thought that was pretty good. Everything else you have to wait and see. I'm always very cautious and I have the feeling that people in the US tend to think everything is great at first.
In the end you decided to present your German-language texts to the American audience without translation. Was that a problem?
It was always said, also by the record company, that it wasn't possible at all, that we would need English lyrics. That's nonsense, we don't need it. On the contrary. I can remember when I first heard music, English, I could never understand a word and still sang along. This is how Rammstein works in other European countries and in America. People notice that the German lyrics are part of the music and they sing along, even though they don't understand anything.
Would that be a loss of identity if you sang in English?
It would be different. That would raise the question of whether it could become part of our identity. It could be something completely different.
Judging by the experiences you have made, what would you do differently on the next US tour from the start?
We wouldn't go on tour with a band of this magnitude again, it should be one floor up. Basically the way it was in Germany, first supporting Project Pitchfork, then the Ramones, and finally our own tour. It should be something like that in America.
With the difference that the tours there last much longer due to the size of the country.
I hope not.
If you want to set something up in the USA, aren't you forced to travel extensively there?
We have considered how we will proceed. Of course we run the risk of getting bogged down now that our records are being released everywhere. We have to think carefully because America is a huge market, but we don't want to play our asses off. You absolutely have to come up with a concept, playing at festivals would be a possibility. In any case, it's important to be present, to have contact with the people there, which is simply not possible over the phone. On the other hand, we have to be careful not to lose sight of Germany, our country of origin. That would be very dangerous.
What are you planning to be present here?
We will play almost all big festivals in Europe.
Can you get any higher here?
It has to work, otherwise it becomes uninteresting. We always have to improve, whether it's the number of viewers, the quality of the concept, the sound - there are definitely still a few steps to go.
To what extent is creative development still possible in your current program? Were you able to write new songs since Sehnsucht?
I would like to. I'm thinking a lot about that at the moment. I've always been a person who likes to have something up my sleeve, but now I have to sit down and write new stuff again. But I've made up my mind that I'll take my time, no matter how long it takes.
When you have achieved so much, what goals are still open?
Actually, I make music because I'm a dissatisfied person. The whole process is based on a dissatisfaction that I believe will haunt me for the rest of my life. I think I always have to make music to be reasonably happy. That's really annoying.
Sounds more like therapy than a job.
But that's how it is and I can't do anything about it. Recently someone told me that we are the most successful band in Germany. I don't even think about it that much myself. Other people always have to tell me that. I'm also not the type to suddenly go completely crazy. I try to see it like a role I took on at Rammstein. I also know that success isn't just about me. I go on stage and play a very specific role, like in a movie. It's a part of me and I like to play it. Then I go off stage and have another role that has nothing to do with Rammstein. There is a private life and it is important to preserve it. The part I play on stage is inside me, of course, otherwise I wouldn't come across as convincing. But it's not all. There are other sides of me that don't come out there. I realize that people who come to me after a show don't mean me as a person. If later I do things all by myself and they become very successful - maybe things will be different then.
Do you manage to look at the topic of Rammstein from a distance?
No, but I would like to. If you spend 300 days a year with Rammstein, then you have no distance. There is no end in sight either. You also always need some time to get back to normal life. When you've just made it, you usually have to start again.
Do you want to do this forever?
No, I don't want to. I think we'll have to raise the alarm for another two or three years. It's important that you stick together, then you can sometimes release a record within four years. Not every year, or at least every two years.
Your daughter is seven years old. Has she seen you on stage before?
Yes, once. She was very proud and always followed my movements.
Did she also see Till's dildo number on 'Bück Dich'?
I covered her eyes. (Laughs) No, I don't think it was made that night. I'm not particularly into this insert anyway. But I could also explain that to her. Children already know, they can separate it.
Is there anything besides Rammstein that you would like to do?
I'd like to find a balance when I'm on tour. When I'm on the road, I can't make music. I took a small studio with me to be able to work - it just wasn't possible. I need something to do besides music when I'm on the tour bus. For example, Günther from KMFDM takes photos all the time. But that's not really my thing. I have to find something there. I used to write pirate stories as a kid. I've been looking for it lately, but haven't found anything. Maybe I should do something like this. I'll think about it.

Reciprocated
pairing: Ava Lawrence x mc
warnings: none, just fluff.
A/N: this is a bit of my take on the previous dissapointing chapter of mtfl, so ofc there's like nothing canon in here. this one's for you @kamilahsayeet2063 !
tagging: @choicesficwriterscreations
A/N pt 2: I haven't proof read this one so forgive me if i make any mistakes! and this was a veryyy impulsive one + I'm not a writer + im a noah stan soo excuse the quality! plus it's in first person like mtfl so it was really tough to write (Ah I cringed writing it in first person so much) .
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
.. and of course there was only one bed.
damnit. i knew it. i knew it would come to this. Why is this so awkward? it shouldn't be awkward, right? Ava and I have slept in the same bed so many times, be it pyjama party, camp tents or sleepovers.. but something has changed. Ava and I, we are the same as we were as kids.. yet so different.
"So, um, right side for you?"
"yeah, sure."
she slipped into her side of the bed and i hesitated
"Should i just sleep in the couch?"
"Emma, there's literally no couch here. And I'm your...", she paused, considering, ".. best.. friend. Nothing to be nervous about."
She gave me her comforting smile and I lied down beside her. She was scrolling through her gallery, showing me our throwback pictures and #bestiegoals selfies.
"Hey, remember when I felt distressed? You cheered for me, holding your pom poms high in the air and earning awkward glances from people all around. All of that, just to make me happy. So stupid of you.. and incredibly cute"
My heart leaped at the word "cute". as luck would have it, before I could reply Bayla's text made Ava shift away from me.
--
Her back touched mine as we lay facing opposite to each other. Despite the warm blanket shared by us, I felt cold. Maybe it was the slightly open window, maybe it was the heater not working or maybe it was Ava leaving me lonely. She was so caught up in texting Bayla while I craved to have even a word with her. I was so close to her, yet so far.
After what seemed like hours, I felt her shift and heard her throw away her phone in frustration. I gasped as I realised she was facing my back now. She gently pat my shoulder to talk.
"Got a minute for me, Emma?"
I wanted to pretend to be asleep, but I couldn't. I sensed longing and need in her voice which made me flip over and face her.
"For you? Anytime."
She was trying her best not to cry, but I could see right through her. I was her "best.. friend" after all. That's what besties do, right?
"Did it happen, Ava?" (It was our code for "breakup")
She nodded, affirmative.
"Should I bring you something? some Gourmet Icecream Mr. Jennings may have stashed away? some shitty rom com movie? a box of tissues?"
"Shh..," She placed a finger on my lips. we both sat up, facing each other.
"I only need you, Emma. I need you to listen to me, I need you to be by my side at this time, if you want to.."
I nodded "yes" and Ava continued,
"I feel horrible, Emma. I feel like I've used people and never had any genuine feelings for them. first Mason, then Chad and now.. Bayla. I just didn't feel anything for them even though i was dating them, just because my silly mind decided it has feelings for..."
she looked at me directly in the eye and looked away.
"..a special someone.."
"Y'know, you should go for it, Ava."
I nodded at her encouragingly. She caught my drift and said,
"..you. Emma. You. It has always been you. I knew it when you walked into my party, radiant glow all around you, charming me. I knew it when I felt more hurt than you when you fell down from the human pyramid. I knew it when we joked about adopting a cat together and naming it "Eva" because emma + ava. I knew it when I sat in Belvoire's campus, watching a girl sing to her girlfriend, and wished it were you and me instead. I've been keeping this inside of me for way too long. Damnit. I love you, Emma, always have and will probably always will."
I always knew Ava would confess to me someday, what I didn't know was how I'd react to it. I used to think I'd feel burdened not reciprocating her feelings, but not today. I was aware that I felt the same way and I'd not let her slip out of my hands anymore.
"I won't shy away from my emotions anymore, Ava. I have been utterly selfish these days too, using Noah to get over you because you seemed so happy with Bayla and i was confused if the feelings I had for you was romantic or platonic. But it's all crystal clear now."
I took her hand in mine and continued,
"I know I've pushed you and my feelings away before and watched you slip away from my hands like sand but not anymore, because Ava Lawrence, you've completely enchanted me and my whole heart and I'll be damned if I let you walk away without listening to what's been in my heart for so long. I-"
I felt tears welling up in my throat.
".. I love you too.. so much that even if i keep saying this forever it would never be enough."
Ava smiled, and it felt like warm sunshine after weeks of snow. I embraced her and she held onto me as if I was her last breath.
--
that night, we were lying next to each other in perfect silence, our hands intertwined.
"You know, I think we should adopt 2 cats, Eva and Ama."
"Anything you want, love."

Younger post-ep recap 6x06
Due to a rather unfortunate run in between my laptop and a glass of water I lost my original ramble for this week’s Younger (as well as the actual laptop so R.I.P Lappy, you were actually pretty terrible but we had a good run). So instead of my usual review I thought I’d do more of a recap and refresher of the last episode to get us prepped, primed and pumped (aka the 3 P's) for the next installment (ep7).
Episode 6 of Younger was in many ways so bonkers that it shouldn’t have worked, but somehow all the pieces came together and it did .Oh boy did it ever! I outright belly laughed a number of times throughout and I think my dog was mildly concerned for my well-being because there were actual tears coming out my eyes at a couple of points. I’m a sucker for a pun so ‘Merger, She Wrote’ had me at hello (you could say my hopes for the ep were high...yes I did and #notsorry). What I wouldn’t have given to be in the room to see the reactions to a script with ‘Liza goes to talk to the nurse who is actually a plant’ in it. So yes there were LOLs galore but most importantly, by the end of the ep order had been restored following the upheaval of the past 6 episodes (which is about the limit viewers can take sitting in the discomfort of an unfamiliar detour from the norm IMO: think the Bryce Reiger arc in season 3 and the Charles finding out the lie in season 5...it’s almost as though Darren and co. have done this before...), Finally the fam is back together at Millennial (or is it Mercennial now?)
Straight off the bat I was very distracted for most of the opening scene by Liza’s dress and look in general because it was AMAZING.  I am loving all the Maggie/Liza in the morning scenes we’re getting this season and Maggie in a blue coverall embarking on a DIY rope harness ceiling painting project...what could possibly go wrong? I felt mildly uncomfortable at how relatable Maggie’s not being served for 10 mins in a bar and sneaking out to the fridge in the night were, but was also mildly mesmerized by Liza’s coffee mug that looked like some kind of old-timey wash basin (turns out this was not relevant to the story but noted nonetheless). Maggie also offers the very straight forward solution of merging the two companies to alleviate the tension that’s putting Liza and Charles in ‘not a good place’ and I love that her ‘bing, bang, boom’ is echoed by Liza when she floats the idea with Charles later in the ep.
The' Microdosing' book pitch provided us with the set up for the retreat and my fave thing about this scene was how IN character all the characters reactions were to it all; Diana is flat out appalled by the whole thing, Liza is Captain Cautious but trying to play it cool and Kelsey looks like she’s seeing colour for the first time and would 100% pledge her devotion to Travis in any kind of cult situation.
What might have seemed out of character, but actually ended up so perfectly capturing the way she always does everything with absolute gusto, was Diana's foray into boomer erotica narration (as Liza so eloquently put it, 'I think we just found our Seasoned Slut'. These lines, I swear *rofl emoji* )  I think I laughed through the entire scene of Diana in the recording studio, I mean, Miriam Shor's delivery of every line just kills me, but the highlight was undoubtedly when she suggested she could hit nipple a little harder and affirmed  'throbbing nipple' to herself as she walked back to the booth. Zane and creepy af Audrey Colbert waiting allowed for Diana to unsubtly hot foot it out of there, which was a great throwback to her refusal to be in the same room as Audrey in ep 3.
It was a also great opportunity to bring Zane and Kelsey back together and who doesn't love an awks 'accidentally had the mic open and didn't realize' moment when you're talking about how your author is definitely a murderer? I feel like Audrey may go and find another publisher now (just a hunch) but I would really like to see more of her because this character is a type of unhinged that we haven't seen on this show and I think that could be a lot of fun to see play out. I have to say that Kelsey Peters is NOT someone I picked as a boop-er of noses, yet there she was at the bar, booping Zane's nose and this was my favourite interaction of theirs in the series. I was totally digging the dynamic this ep and it will be very interesting to see what that will look like with the new work arrangements. Also, where was Zane when that was all going down btw? I assume Charles filled him in on the bringing the companies together plan before it happened?
Liza's excitement when she told Charles the idea of merging the two companies was endearing and I am unabashedly a big fan of Charles, but his attempt at convincing Liza to join him at Mercury after she tells him that she won't leave Millennial and Kelsey, by saying he left his company to be with her, was super shitty. But it was also super necessary. Because at some point this needed to be said and most importantly, Liza needed to call him out on it and let him know that he cannot use it as a bargaining chip. One of the things I love most about the Charles/Liza dynamic (aside from all the things, but that's another essay) is that Liza is her own advocate in this relationship, she will stand her ground when something is important to her and does not compromise herself to appease Charles. He is equally as stubborn but they are able to have the hard conversations that need to be had but this doesn’t lead them to question whether they want to be together (I very much appreciated the kiss on the cheek Liza gave Charles before she left for this very reason).
So of course being on a psychedelics retreat together when they've hit a roadblock in the relationship was definitely a very good idea...Well it was for us as viewers at least, because pretty much from the moment they arrive and Liza and Charles start talking straight to camera as the literal doctor (my god that whole line just cracked me up) informs them they'll be taking not-LSD, we know we're not in Kansas anymore Toto. Enter Josh for *insert drama here* purposes (and I do think he should franchise Inkburg coz why not?) and we have, ladies and gentlefolk, a recipe for some next level hilarity. But not before Josh and Liza share a lingering look as they take their dose of illicit substance to ensure that Lizs's trip includes one down memory lane.
I have made my feelings about love triangles known many times (quick recap: hard dislike. Tricky to pull off without one or more characters looking bad. Very tiring as a viewer and quite frankly I am pretty lazy and tired most of the time irl so just don't want it on my screen), however I will say that I did not see this ep as re-stoking the love triangle, I saw it as simply reminding us that it is there and can be reignited by the writers at any stage. Within the context of everything that was happening, Liza hallucinating Josh at her door actually made sense and I have no doubt that various factions of Younger fans had meltdowns at that moment for very different reasons.. Sutton Foster's physical comedy throughout this whole ep was second to none, starting at her realization that it was, in fact, Charles who had come to her room and continuing the next morning at breakfast.
Speaking of which, there was something about seeing Liza and Charles in the breakfast room together that made my sappy heart swell, it had such a vacay feel and I'm sure if you muted your volume you could pretend they were just listening to the activities for the day before going off to spend some quality time together...I mean, maybe that would be a thing, I wouldn't know....where was I? Oh yes, the unfolding of a series of comedy golden McNuggets™ that I am still laughing about. We learn that Liza is a supertaster (for those like me who pretended they understood what that meant but then realized they did not, I googled it and it means that she is sensitive to the drugs and basically the microdose affects her like a full dose, you're welcome) and I am chuckling even now when I think about Josh's, 'hey guys' in Charles' voice as he joins the table.
This is another one of those concepts that I feel like could've not worked at all but sweet lawd, the Charles and Josh voice swap scene was next level and I could watch this and the scene that follows over and over and never not laugh. I again LOVE the decision to have the guys talk to camera because it absolutely emphasizes the whole situation and Liza sidestepping away to visit the nurse just rounded off the whole crazy caper.
I have no words to describe how much I love the flat out ridiculous perfection of the visit to Nurse Maureen. Yes Liza has the epiphany that Josh and Charles bring out different things in her (though hot sex seems to be at the core of both so ya know, sounds like a win in the past and present and good for her on both accounts) and again, the unlikely scenario that her ex and current boyfriends are in the same place at the same time (while she is taking mind altering substance) has just played out so it also makes sense in this context. Quite frankly I'm shipping her and Maureen pretty hard at this point because a) it is not easy to pull off eyeshadow that green and b) everyone deserves someone in their life who has the kind of belief in Liza that Maureen does when she tells her 'I bet you can' dance just like me. I don't even know how to explain whatever that dance is but I just know that I want someone/something in my life that will windmill their/it's arms at me with such fervor that I find myself dancing with two attractive men in tuxedos on a galaxy stage.
I cannot express the joy I felt watching the entire dance scene, it was all just so. much. fun. But my absolute hands down favourite moment was when it cut back to the retreat and we, along with Charles and Josh, discover that Liza is in fact dancing with 'Maureen' the plant and seriously, this is up there with my highlights of the entire series. That and the reveal that the selfies Liza was taking were sent to Diana (Diana speaking to Liza in her 'sexy' voice, asking 'where is my plant?', Liza's, 'Maureen', I just cannot with every part of this glorious tie in at the end of the ep. I am sending Ashley Skidmore a houseplant to express my gratitude for gifting us with these moments*). Seeing Josh and Charles together was great but it was clear a scene was missing and I am SO glad that Younger released the deleted conversation between the two of them coz it was both necessary because YES and also because it suddenly made Charles' entire conversation and reason for his decision to sell Mercury make sense (ie. was pretty pivotal).
Tumblr media
I big A adored Charles and Liza's conversation (and outfits and aesthetic overall) as they're leaving the retreat, the shift in Charles is palpable and it's just such a credit to the writing and acting to be able to convey so much in such a brief scene. Maggie of course experienced quite the shift herself, from ceiling to floor, with a sufficient amount of dangling as her helpful neighbourly pervert got himself off as she got herself down. But most importantly, Maggie got her mojo back (though is she not currently dating Beth? In which case location of missing mojo: unclear).
Now I gotta tell you, the final scene of this week's ep up and got me. Big time. Kelsey's earlier comment, that she really hates competing with Charles, certainly added weight to the resolution we've all been waiting for this season. Charles' honesty about his realisation that he is hurting his family, not to mention him confirming that he means Kelsey, Diana and Liza and that he wants to come home, ugh, my insides are gooey just writing these words, leads to his offer to Kesley and honestly, the interactions between all of them in this scene was wonderful. I loved that Kelsey held the room, that Charles was putting the offer to her from one businessperson to another (though thank goodness Diana was there to point out the difference between $1 and $1000000 eek! Also, I get that it would never occur to anyone that the price would be $1 so I'll cut Kels some slack). Diana looks like she is going to cry at any moment from elation and I love the way Kelsey asks for the approval of the ladies before shaking Charles' hand. This will forever be one of my favourite scenes on this show.
The thought of Charles coming back and working as an editor alongside Liza is an actual dream. I mean, I am very happy to be taken on the journey the writers set, but I have legit wondered what it would be like to see him in that role and he and Liza working together properly as equals and I absolutely cannot believe it's going to happen.
Well this ended up being quite a bit longer than I expected (lol, what a surprise). Bring on episode 7!
*I will not in fact be sending Ashley Skidmore a houseplant because I live in a very far away country, it would cost a lot of money and it is 1000% creepy to receive a dead plant from a stranger.

thoughts on the relationship between marvin and jason? :0 (i know we've discussed this a bit before but !!! i love them)
Tumblr media
OH BOY NOW DO I HAVE SOME FEELINGS™ ABOUT THOSE TWO.
As a preface, let me just say that Marvin and Jason are indisputably the most important characters in the entire musical. It’s honestly a fierce debate on which of those two are the quote-unquote “main character” because literally everything is centered around these two (the conflict, the subplots, the other characters, etc). They both single-handedly as well as together drive home the whole musical through their internal struggles, dynamic with the other characters, and character developments. I cannot articulate how much I love these two characters and esp how they mirror and struggle against one another.
Act One
The whole focus of Act 1 is centered on the estrangement between Marvin and Jason. As we know from the preface in Tight Knit Family, Marvin not only “divorced his wife…ran off with a friend” but he also “left his child.” Marvin essentially abandoned his family (or at least, that’s definitely how Jason sees it) in order to pursue a relationship with Whizzer and cultivate his true sense of identity as a gay man. Marvin’s abandonment of Jason is the direct cause of Jason acting out, and - as we see Mendel assuming the role of father figure after Tight Knit Family (Reprise) - Jason seems way more grounded and controlled while Jason’s (and Trina’s) perceived abandonment causes Marvin to snap (as seen clearly in “Marvin Hits Trina”). It was very, very pointed in the behavior reversal - In “My Father’s a Homo / Everyone Tells Jason to See a Psychiatrist,” Jason is shown to be stomping around and knocking over blocks, much to the annoyance of his parents; in “Marvin Hits Trina,” Marvin does the exact same thing. They pull the exact same temper tantrum (except Marvin’s is obviously way more extreme).
Jason is very visibly angry and hurt by his father’s abandonment, and this anger clearly manifests in his fear of being gay (he is so averse to being anything like Marvin). Throughout Act One, he tries very hard to make Marvin angry and exasperated (”Daddy is a prick…Daddy isn’t mine” / ”just because you failed as parents” / “I wanna speak with Whizzer” / there’s more, but you get the gist). It’s to the point that Marvin is convinced Jason doesn’t even love him (Jason, “I love my mother,” / Marvin “Why not me?”). And what’s so frustrating is that Marvin even thinks that he’s trying so hard (taking him to ball games and museums, encouraging Jason about how smart he is, trying to speak “words of wisdom”) when it’s then revealed/heavily implied in “Father to Son” that Marvin had never even apologized for what he had done to his son until then. Marvin literally was “marching in one place” because he refused to see his actions as selfish and kept trying to have this “tight-knit family” when he was the one who tore it apart in the first place.
And it just always hurt me because it’s not like Marvin and Jason don’t love each other. In “I Never Wanted to Love You,” Jason says, “I love my dad / I love the things I never had” (which could mean a positive role model in the form of a father but shh that’s just me being super super meta). Jason - despite his behavior and affirmations to otherwise - loves Marvin and desires his presence in his life. Marvin had just been so blinded by the perception of what a family should look like that he had ignored Jason, who was acting out specifically to get Marvin’s attention. And Marvin acknowledges his son’s internal conflict (“How he adores and hates me”) as well as admitting (quite cruelly) that he never even wanted to love Jason in the first place. He just wanted to “see [Marvin’s own] face in [Jason’s].” He wanted a mini-Marvin, but Jason wasn’t that. And it frustrated Marvin to no end throughout the entire first act, and it isn’t until “Father to Son” that he gives Jason “his blessing” to be his own person and learn from Marvin’s mistakes.
SPEAKING OF FATHER TO SON - OH MY. Most musicals have a “let’s see how many throwbacks to prior songs we can fit into this last one in the act” song as the act one finale (obv it should be noted that Finn maybe didn’t do this because “Act One” of Falsettos was originally written as its own stand-alone musical entitled “March of the Falsettos”), but Falsettos didn’t do that. No, it stayed focused on the one relationship that Marvin had any semblance of saving: his relationship with his son.
And it’s just so powerful because it’s in “Father to Son” that you really see Marvin’s redemption arc. Like, he realizes his mistakes (”what I’ve done to you is rotten”) and he freely admits to wanting that closer connection to him (”Kid, be my son”) and he is finally dropping his expectations of Jason being a mini-Marvin (”I’ve made my choice. You can sing a different song”). And Christian Borle and Anthony Rosenthal really, really did an amazing job with this scene - the soft tones, the crumpled looks, the hug at the very end oh don’t even get me started. Like, it was one of the most powerful songs in the entire musical and it can get me real choked up so I’m just going to move on to Act Two now, okay?
Act Two
Act Two is less heavily focused on Marvin and Jason’s relationship, but it is still very prominent. Marvin is a lot more open and doting on Jason (”My child” - tbh literally all of Year of the Child), and his “becoming of a man” is shown to be really, really important to Marvin. He supports Jason and is a lot less self-absorbed, but we can still see some friction between them. In “Everyone Hates His Parents,” Jason is shown to be really fed up with his parents bickering and fighting, demonstrating that though Marvin has grown up considerably, he can still be over-bearing and self-absorbed about things.
And like? I wasn’t going to mention this, but it should be mentioned that Jason is the whole reason that Marvin found happiness again by inviting Whizzer to his baseball game, knowing damn well that Marvin is still not over him. Like honestly?? Jason, way to be a bro.
But OH LORD, JASON’S BAR MITZVAH!!!! Don’t even talk to me about “don’t know why but he looks like Marvin.” It is one of my favorite lines of the musical, and yeah, it seems kinda offhanded and stupid (because of course he looks like Marvin - it’s his son???) but it ISN’T.
Do you remember how averse Jason was in act one to resemble his father in any way (see: Jason’s therapy)? Act One Jason would have balked at this line, but that’s not the reaction that we see from Jason. Instead, we have Marvin fiddling with Jason’s clothes and Jason smiling up at him and Marvin’s whispering words of encouragement, and it’s important because that line isn’t an insult anymore.
In Summary
Jason and Marvin are parallels to each other. They throw temper tantrums and are very, very idealistic (Marvin’s “Tight Knit Family” Dream and Jason’s “Another Miracle of Judaism” Prayer”) and wrestle against insecurities and had loved and lost someone that meant the absolute most to them.
Trina was right in that Jason certainly is “Marvin’s child.”

Is it just me, or do ultra shows fair better with episodes featuring classic aliens and monsters? I mean given the whole generational and nostalgia thing. Do you think maybe doing something that is bit more of a throwback might generate more buzz like mebius did or do you think maybe it will defeat the purpose and just be sort of of reductive?
Um, it sorta is the opposite from my perspective.
I mean reusing classic kaiju is one thing, but pitting new ultras against kaijus from the last few series is another as it'll give us a sense of scaling.
And tbh I really, really very tired of seeing classic kaiju, unless they can provide a good fight (Eg Zetton, King Joe etc)
And here's the thing, with alot of people that I've been talking to, from teens to young adults, tbh, your idea won't work anymore at this point. Cause most of them outside Japan (I'm thinking international fame here) have more or less stopped watching until Gaia at most. Even worse, perhaps they just watched a single showa era series and never got back into it ever again.
So with all due respect, Ultraman really needs a reboot, both in tone and direction, the New Gen Heroes were specifically aimed at young children which tbh imo, wasn't really as effective as TsuPro is essentially competing with KR and SS who, as hard as I want to admit it, are doing WAAAAAY better. In addition to that, they're also slowly driving away their older fans with their gimmicks
(yes, R/B's gimmicks were the last straw for me before I decided I was finally done with gimmicks as it has reached a whole new level of silliness)
They need to understand that theyre unable to compete with the other two franchises at this point, not with their current financial status of just being pulled out of a LONG legal quicksand and venture into more uncharted areas.
The reason I recently mentioned about the Ultra N Project is that yes, although I'll admit that it was a huge flop, but it's simply just because it was too ahead of their time (as I've explained above with the change in times), in fact, I would go as far as to say that both the New Gen Heroes and the Ultra N Project would've have done much better if their introductions to the world at their respective point in time were switched.
That's right, I believe that it's time for TsuPro to change their target audience with their current profile as for sustainability, as at this point with R/B, you can clearly see that TsuPro has come to a point where it's obvious that they themselves are tired of being on such a path and are trying waaaay too hard to make R/B work.
(that's why I've been covering less and less of the recent episodes, it's just becoming harder and harder to watch)
I propose that series like Nexus or even spin offs such as the Origin Saga should take the stage once again to really stand out and bring back their old fans with new and mature themes until they regain and affirm their financial standing in the toku market.
Although I would like to say that the above is based on only my observations and from the people that I've been talking to since recent years on their attitude towards the franchise as well.
Heck, TsuPro could be planning a radical change right under our noses just that we haven't noticed yet.
And on a positive note, now that TsuPro is out of any legal cases, Legendary would definitely pick it up sooner or later, so we'll have to see about that.

You may have noticed, I removed all ads from Ventipop when I rebooted the site last month. So…the only revenue I receive is from “Buy Me A Coffee” link on the homepage and the “Become A Patron” link on the top of every page of Venti. Last week, I received a coffee and gained my 2nd Patron which is a monthly contribution. (Thanks Lisa!) I don’t expect it, but it sure is appreciated and good people affirming when it happens. If you can click one of those links and give even a little, it helps offset the costs associated with the site.

Book Recommendation - Charlesgate Confidential by Scott Von Doviak
A breathtakingly clever, twist-filled narrative that moves from 1946 to 1988 to 2014 and back again. Charlesgate Confidential is a tremendous modern-day pulp story that combines fact, fiction, legend, and baseball. It reads like an unassisted triple play and is so fun.
I’m not usually attracted to this genre, but even the Wall Street Journal gave it a good review so I decided to check it out. Read it in almost one sitting. Von Doviak does a fantastic job of creating setting, tone, dialogue and characters for each distinctive decade. From the 40’s rat-a-tat-tat rapid fire made-guy dialogue to the 1980’s record shop, big hair-trying to get laid in college narrative to the present day detective looking for treasure storyline, Charlesgate Confidential is a throwback and a flashforward joy of a read all-in-one.

Pause-vertising is the latest attempt by advertisers to get tv viewer’s eyeballs and ears on their commercials. Ads that only run when you pause a tv show while streaming. "Imagine an ad for soda or beer that comes on the screen just as you decide to stop the action during a run of an episode of Black-ish on Hulu to go to the kitchen for a snack, or a pitch for toilet paper that begins to move in the moments before you choose to halt the video stream for a bathroom break," reports Brian Steinberg. Drop your shoulders as far down as they’ll go, followed by your upper and lower arm, one side at a time
Breathe out, relaxing your chest followed by your legs, starting from the thighs and working down
You should then spend 10 seconds trying to clear your mind before thinking about one of the three following images:
You’re lying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing but a clear blue sky above you
You’re lying in a black velvet hammock in a pitch-black room
You say “don’t think, don’t think, don’t think” to yourself over and over for about 10 seconds.

Rush Limbaugh on the Mitch Slap of Pocahontas Elizabeth Warren
rush-limbaugh @ Old Guard Audio
Pocahontas Elizabeth Warren HoaxandChange.com
Feb 8, 2017
RUSH: Okay, Elizabeth Warren blew up on the floor of the Senate last night, and Mitch McConnell Mitch-slapped her with Rule 19, Senate Rule number 19, and everybody’s saying that Mitch blew it. That by invoking Rule 19 and shutting her down because she was personally insulting Jeff Sessions about things they had already vetted and discussed on a committee hearing on Sessions, shut her down, and that’s turned her into a 24-hour news story and news focus.
But I don’t think that’s why — I don’t think they invoked Rule 19 to shut her down here. It’s the effect of it, but I think it’s got ramifications down the road on confirmation for Gorsuch and other — all of which I’m gonna explain as the program unfolds. But, folks, while all this is going on, and Fauxcahontas Warren is all over leftist media, she’s receiving accolades and cheers and attaboys and attagirls and, “You keep it up, Liz, you keep it up.” And she’s livid and she’s fit to be tied.
And in the midst of all this, she thought it necessary to send me a message. In the midst of all this anger, who is on her mind? None other than your beloved host, the all-knowing, all-caring, all-sensing Maha Rushie. It happened this morning on The View, and this is just one of the many stops that Fauxcahontas has made since having been made famous as a screeching ranter last night on the floor of the Senate. Here is what happened.
BEHAR: Rush Limbaugh has famously said (paraphrasing), “Oh, all this marching and protesting, they’re all gonna get tired of it.” Do you think we’re gonna get tired?
WARREN: No, Rush, we are not gonna get tired. We are here to stay.
BEHAR: I know you’ll never get tired.
RUSH: Not only are you gonna get tired of it, it’s gonna rebound negatively on all of you. You people are digging your grave even deeper with all of this. You just don’t know it. They really don’t. This stuff is not gonna stop Trump. It is not going to stop the Republicans. It is not going to reverse the outcome of the election, and it’s not gonna set them up for better improvements in 2018 or 2020, because they still have no message behind all this other than they’re a bunch of spoiled brats who simply are a bunch of authoritarians who can’t handle losing.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: Here is Fauxcahontas. By the way, you may wonder why the name “Fauxcahontas.” Elizabeth Warren is as white as the fence behind your house. She wanted to get into Harvard. She wanted to become a teacher. And Harvard, being politically correct and an institution that bows to the religion of affirmative action, said, “No, no, no, no. We’re only accepting people of color.” So she went out and had some so-called official blood test done and found that she was one-tenth of 1% Indian blood, that somewhere back in her family’s lineage there had been an Indian, a Native American.
And Harvard said, “Oh, well, fine.” She said her high cheekbones were the genealogical evidence, the physiological evidence that she has Indian blood, is her high cheekbones. And the left said, “This is great! This is absolutely wonderful! That’s a brilliant move, Fauxcahontas!” We call her Fauxcahontas ’cause she’s a fake Indian. There’s no question it’s all just manufactured. So she’s now a senator, and you should also know that her approval numbers in Massachusetts are down.
She is only at 44%. On the national scene, the far-left hate party loves her. But she’s got problems in Massachusetts. So she’s pulling stunts to try to get noticed, and she went to the floor of the Senate last night to read a letter from Coretta Scott King about Jeff Sessions trying to disqualify him, smear him, slander him. It’s just despicable stuff, and Mitch McConnell invoked Senate Rule 19 which says that senators cannot do that.
You cannot personally assault, personally judge — you cannot slander — fellow members of this body. It’s a seldom-invoked rule, but it was invoked last night. She’s got a history of Rule 19-type behavior. So McConnell slaps the rule on her, which silences her, and the left is all thinking, “This is really great, because now they’ve turned her into the focal point and she’s got a 24-hour story! This happened so late at night, that if McConnell would have just let her rant then nobody would have ever known about it and there wouldn’t be any news about it.
“But McConnell slapped her down and so now she’s big news.” I don’t think that the invocation of Rule 19 was to shut her up last night. I think this does have something to do with potential use of the filibuster, which McConnell doesn’t want to do. Rule 19 also has other things in it, not just you can’t slime a fellow senator. There’s also a rule, part of Rule 19, which says a senator can only speak twice on the same subject during the course of debate on that subject.
And this could be a way of getting Sessions confirmed without having to go nuclear and do away with the filibuster. I’ll explain all that in the next half hour, but I want to play for you the sound bite of some of Elizabeth Warren last night. And you know what? Ah, ’cause it takes… It takes four bites to get to where she gets shut down here. Go ahead and play number nine. We have time to squeeze this, at least get started on it.
WARREN: I rise today to express my strong opposition to the nomination of Senator Jeff Sessions to serve as attorney general of the United States. And I ask, “Where are the senators who will say ‘no’ to the nomination of Senator Jeff Sessions as attorney general of the United States?’ I hope there are at least enough senators here who understand that America is careening over a constitutional cliff and that all of us — all of us — regardless of political party, need an attorney general who can be relied on to enforce the laws fairly and to fight back against lawless overreach by an out-of-control president.
RUSH: Ah, the president’s not out of control. It’s your side, Fauxcahontas, that’s out of control. Felonious, riotous behavior. Anyway, that’s how it got started.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: Elizabeth Warren, we’re gonna keep going here. Here’s sound bite number two. It’s three more sound bites before we get to her being shut down with the invocation of Rule 19.
WARREN: Mr. Sessions is a throwback to a shameful era which I know both black and white Americans thought was in our past. It is inconceivable to me that a person of this attitude is qualified to be a U.S. attorney, let alone a U.S. federal judge. He is, I believe, a disgrace to the Justice Department, and he should withdraw his nomination and resign his position.
RUSH: Lindsey Graham, Senator from South Carolina is pro-Sessions, and he has tweeted out the photograph of an award that Sessions got. In 2009, the NAACP gave Sessions their governmental award for excellence. He was a senator in 2009. The NAALCP, National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People, gave Sessions their award for governmental excellence. Now they oppose him, as Fauxcahontas opposes him. So Fauxcahontas is just getting warmed up here. Here’s another bite.
WARREN: A person who has exhibited so much hostility to the enforcement of those laws.
STEVE DAINES: The senator is reminded that it is a violation of Rule 19 of the Standing Rules of the Senate to impute to another senator or senators any conduct or motive unworthy or becoming a senator.
WARREN: Mr. President, I don’t think I quite understand. I’m reading a letter from Coretta Scott King to the Judiciary Committee from 1986 that was admitted into the record. I’m simply reading what she wrote about what the nomination of Jeff Sessions to be a federal court judge meant and what it would mean in history for her.
DAINES: This is a reminder, not necessarily what you just shared. However, you stated that a sitting senator is a disgrace to the Department of Justice.
RUSH: And so she’s just getting warmed up. This is the kind of stuff she loves. These Democrat hate groups, they love this kind of challenge, and so Fauxcahontas was just getting warmed up. What, by the way, the voice you heard there, that was Steve Daines. He’s a senator from Montana, and the poor guy, he drew the short straw last night in having to act as president of the Senate. He had to be traffic cop for all this, another Democrat all-nighter. They tried to destroy DeVos. Now they’re trying to destroy Sessions.
They’re not gonna succeed at this. This is an exercise here simply to feed the hate to their base, their victimized base, which has a steady diet of undiluted hate. The Democrats have to keep serving it if they have any chance of getting elected. So Mitch McConnell, as she kept going, McConnell stepped in, the Republican leader of the Senate had enough.
MCCONNELL: Mr. President.
DAINES: Majority leader.
MCCONNELL: The senator has impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama as worn by the chair. Senator Warren said, quote, “Senator Sessions has used the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens.” I call the senator to order under the provisions of Rule 19.
WARREN: Mr. President.
DAINES: Senator from Massachusetts.
WARREN: Mr. President, I am surprised that the words of Coretta Scott King are not suitable for debate in the United States Senate. I ask leave of the Senate to continue my remarks.
DAINES: Is there objection?
MCCONNELL: I object.
DAINES: Objection is heard. The senator will take her seat.
WARREN: I appeal the ruling of the chair.
RUSH: And she just kept going, and she got hysterical and so forth. The reading of the letter from Coretta Scott King in 1986 was about the Sessions appointment to be a federal district court judge back in 1986 is not even applicable today. The whole thing here is rooted in the left trying to take a joke that Sessions told and turn it into a serious policy statement.
The left wants you to believe that Jeff Sessions was all cool with the KKK. He was fine with the KKK. They were great bunch of — until he found out they smoke marijuana, and when he found out they smoked marijuana, that’s when Jeff Sessions decided he had a distance himself from the KKK. He was telling a joke, I’m giving you it to you out of context. That one episode is what the Democrats have tried to build a case on that Sessions is pro-KKK, anti-black, anti-minority, racist and all. It’s bogus. It’s BS.
Many of the senators that voted against Sessions in ’86 have stated they wished they could do it again. They feel bad they voted against him. Everybody in the Senate knows the guy. It’s all made up. This is why McConnell stood up. It’s made up. It’s a bunch of lies. None of it is true. It’s impugning a senator. It is violation of Rule 19.
However, there is an interesting piece about this by a writer named Sean Davis over at The Federalist. In his opinion, this is related to the upcoming battle over Judge Gorsuch. And it’s rooted in the fact that McConnell and the Republicans would really love to get Gorsuch confirmed without having to invoke the filibuster, to nuke it. Which means they would like to be able to get 60 votes for Gorsuch. But Rule 19, you see, Rule 19 provides a route around the necessity for 60 votes without blowing up the filibuster. And here is the part of the Rule 19 that is relevant to this aspect of it.
“When a senator desires to speak, he shall rise and address the Presiding Officer, and shall not proceed until he is recognized, and the Presiding Officer shall recognize the senator who shall first address him. No senator shall interrupt another senator in debate without his consent, and to obtain such consent he shall first address the Presiding Officer, and no senator…” This is the key to it: “[N]o senator shall speak more than twice upon any one question in debate on the same legislative day without leave of the Senate, which shall be determined without debate.”
You heard her ask for leave in the Senate. That means, basically, suspension of rules, which was denied. So the key element of Rule 19 which shut her up might actually be a test for the use of Rule 19 in another area, and it is the area which prevents a senator from speaking more than twice about any one subject. So the upshot is that no senator can speak more than twice on any legislative day on the same subject. So if you’re talking about the debate on Gorsuch on the floor, on whether he should be confirmed as a Supreme Court justice…
So what McConnell could do here, because he’s the leader of the Senate, is he could simply deem that the floor debate on Gorsuch will occur in one legislative day. And he can do that if the Senate is not gaveled into recess. Which means that the debate would actually become a real filibuster. It means that every senator rising has to speak about the subject and can only speak about it twice, and the Senate can’t go into recess. So you have a legitimate filibuster. It’s just a filibuster where every senator can speak, not just one.
And since a senator can only speak twice about a single subject, the theory is that you could have the Senate legislative day comprise 48 hours and give every opponent to Gorsuch two different chances to say whatever they want to say about him. After everybody has had their opportunity to speak twice on the floor of the Senate, whether it’s at noon or midnight or whenever, they’re done. When every senator has had his chance to speak twice, it’s over. The legislative day is over.
Once that’s all done, there’s nobody remaining who can legally take the floor in order to continue the debate because every senator will have spoken twice about the nomination of Gorsuch. So at that point McConnell would say that the debate is over by rule and call for the final confirmation vote. There would not be a 60-vote cloture vote necessary, wouldn’t be a need for 60 votes, wouldn’t be a necessity for it. Because once that rule — the Rule 19 two-speech rule — has been applied to everybody who wishes to speak, the debate is over.
And then McConnell would schedule the final floor vote, and Gorsuch would sail in. It’s a little bit more involved than that because it’s all involved in shutting down the debate. The debate can’t go on because Rule 19 prevents any senator from saying anything more than twice on the same subject. So the invocation of Rule 19 calls it a legislative day, and the day goes on until every senator’s had a chance to speak twice. Well, the Republicans won’t speak twice, but Democrats will. For every Democrat speaking twice, whatever, take 48 hours, a legislative day, 48 hours.
And after that, there can’t be any more debate on the subject because Rule 19’s invocation prohibits any senator from speaking more than twice on a subject, and you have to have a vote after this. So it’s a way around. It’s obvious they do not want to have to use the filibuster to get Gorsuch confirmed, and some people looking at this think that the invocation of Rule 19 will be a way of getting that done, because you eliminate the need for 60 votes, ’cause the debate ends.
It’s 60 votes that ends the debate normally.
You’ve gotta have 60 votes for cloture.
But if you invoke Rule 19 and senators can only speak twice, then that’s it. Debate’s over. You don’t need 60 votes to stop the debate. Rule 19 has stopped the debate. Then you have the vote, and Gorsuch gets confirmed by 52, 53, what have you, whatever it is. That is the thinking. So while the left thinks that Elizabeth Warren scored a big knockout here by becoming the focus of Republican obstructionists and so forth, what’s really happening here is everybody has been prepared for Rule 19. People know what Rule 19 is now, and there’s another part of it, and it looks like it’s about to be used.
Rush Limbaugh on the Mitch Slap of Pocahontas Elizabeth Warren Feb 8, 2017 RUSH: Okay, Elizabeth Warren blew up on the floor of the Senate last night, and Mitch McConnell Mitch-slapped her with Rule 19, Senate Rule number 19, and everybody’s saying that Mitch blew it.
