Question related to Kosher and future tech (If the mods are okay with it, I'd love a halal answer for this one too, but it's less pressing.) In a scenario where the bulk of meat is vat grown, how do you think that is likely to interact with dietary restrictions? That is- would the appropriateness of the animal follow cell lineage, even it was never the actual animal? Is the impossibility of traditional butchering a non-starter? Is this something where mixed opinions are likely? Thanks immensely!

You’ve hit the nail on the head with ‘mixed opinions’. The debate has already been going on for years! I would recommend a Google search as there are numerous perspectives out there from people with authority to pass judgement on matters of kashrut. Another equally important question is whether lab meat will be fleishig, i.e. forbidden to eat with/after dairy.

OC Fact Swap- Rek's main defense against force mind probing is focusing really hard on outre Gamorrean smut. So far it's dissuaded more than one force user, and caused enough of a reaction once that Rek could tell the guy was trying to poke around. He was unhappy about it.

Well, that's one way to get people from not wanting to poke around in one's mind!

I think the closest in topic that I can think of is when Yuned'rar's first Sith Master, Lord Minq, tried to curb his disobedience with a sort of nightmare mind spell. It was meant to just play through once, where it would warp some memories into a terror-inducing nightmare and then end, making him easier to bend and mould into whatever his Master wished.

Though either on purpose or by accident, the curse got stuck in a loop on him and for nearly two years he suffered hallucinations and repeating nightmares. Eventually, Yuned'rar discovered an old translated copy of the spell and went to Bi'ev, who then went through the entire curse, which thankfully ended the loop on the poor Twi'lek's mind.

He's still affected by it, unfortunately, since it had gone on for so long but the hallucinations and night terrors are lessened every day.

So, I love Panguur's new tattoos, but it does raise a design question I've been curious about: you've got a lot of characters with a lot of intricate detail going on- Delta and Pan's tattoos, all of Perseus. Does that make them hard to draw? What do you do to balance designs looking too busy vs. too simple?

Honestly, none of my OCs’ designs are particularly...hard to draw for me, I mean, in terms of colors/patterns/tattoos (not poses/anatomy/etc, THIS is the hard part lmao) simply because, well. I AM lazy as fuck, I also hate being forced to do/draw things I don’t want to do, so if I decided to settle on a particular design for an OC, it means I don’t find it hard to draw.And well, after a while it just kind of engraves itself into my brain and it becomes even easier to draw, I’ve memorized it so my hand sort of just draws it automatically, you know?

As for tattoos such as Panguur’s or Delta’s, those are different - I usually copy paste them xD I don’t want to draw them again in every new drawing of them, it would be too time-consuming. So I just design the tattoo on a separate massive transparent .psd file, and then I can just copy-paste it whenever I need to. 

Honestly...I’m a huge fan of intricate designs, I DO love me some simpler designs also (like Shakkar or Nix or even Panguur since his design is 90% tattoos) but it’s definitely nice for me to have all these pretty & unique patterns to re-draw with each new artwork. My favorite design to work with is definitely Perseus’, I’m not sure why but his colors & his patterns are sort of relaxing to draw.

How do you think Ki’anya gets along with the other Angels? Is she competitive? Does she prank people? Who does she like to work with?

When she first came to the Angels in her mid-teens, Ki’anya much preferred to duck her head and make as little of a splash as possible. It was easy enough to get lost in the shuffle of a couple hundred soldiers, and her position as a stealth operative made it easy to work alone. She really would only ever have to talk to the head of the division.

She grew up learning that adults tended not to take her seriously, or tried to make decisions for her. After all, her parents just sent her to a boarding school once they decided that they had had enough of her attitude. One of the reasons that she stuck with the Angels was because Hes essentially put a blaster in her hands and told her that she could make a difference. No one had ever really said that before.

She starts warming up way more when she comes to realize that as long as you’re willing to fight, you have a place in the Angels -- and having a place was something that she never had before. While she is a little hesitant to trust adults that haven’t earned it, Ki’anya tends to naturally gravitate toward younger recruits and people her own age. Most of them have the same streak of rebellion and recklessness that she does, and she fits right in with them. 

Of course, when she gets older she becomes more confident in herself and really settles in among the Angels. (The far-more-sure-of-herself version that I’ve been drawing.) She’s way more willing to put herself out there and meet people as they join, though she tends to get along with people better if they approach her first.

She absolutely develops a competitive streak as an Angel. She certainly isn’t the best marksman (not that she’d ever admit it), but few people can beat her aim with a grappling hook or her time to break a lock. She knows her limits but will absolutely bluff her abilities, especially around friendly rivals. Challenge her to any sort of contest and she just can’t say no. Suffice it to say she’s lost more than a couple bets doing this, but she’s a good sport about it.

Ki’anya isn’t much one for pranks. Her idea of mischief is pretty much limited to raiding Hes’s personal stash of snack food and (mostly) getting away with it. However, if she were to get a partner in crime who knew what they were doing she would probably be down for it! 

As a random fact, Ki’anya really idolizes snipers. They combined stealth, which she shines at, but can also fight very effectively from a longer range. With the really good ones, she low-key hero worships them and gets a little flustered talking to them.

Hi! Can you recommend some accessible works on medical history? I'm trained as an EMT, but I've always found past medicine fascinating. I know you said your specialty was Medieval Europe, but anything with good info on Islamic Golden Age medicine would be much appreciated!

Hey! Oh wow... I know this is the subject I’m studying, but my mind is going blank! I’m in a fairly small niche of the medical history field these days so I’m not sure how accessible some of it would be, it’s all fairly stuffy academic stuff that I’m working with. If you’re interested in Islamic Golden Age medicine you may look into the medical works of Avicenna, or at look for modern books talking about him. I am not an expert in Islamic medieval medicine, but I do know that he is one of the most famous Islamic physicians/astronomers/philosophers/etc of  the medieval era. He was a polymath so not everything he wrote is about medicine, but his medical works are very important! Works like his eventually influenced medieval European medicine when his works were translated from Arabic into Latin. Incidentally, if you’re interested in the exchange of ideas from the Islamic world to Western Europe (and the Islamic world had a lot to teach Europe...) you may be interested to read about Andalusian Spain, particularly the library at Toledo.

Anyway, I took so long bc I was using the meme more as reference and didn’t expect anyone to send anything in???? And then I had to find an OC that wasn’t actually the same color scheme as that palette. (I guess I have a thing for that Very Specific Shade of blue-green lmao.)

I decided to go with Coshbyss, because I haven’t really drawn him in forever. As in, at all. Whoops. (In my defense, it’s hard to find much media of his FC, te kohe tuhaka. Mostly because he doesn’t seem to have any obvious social media account to spam selfies with. I ended up using this youtube video as reference.)

Hey cystemic, got any good Edge of the Empire stories?

Haha, plenty.

My first character was a Chiss named Lekr who was a neurosurgeon. He got hired by the Empire to create weird af neurotoxins but he had a conscience and ran off with the formula for space ebola before it was completed. Fast forward a few months, he meets up with his old friend Remy (group leader) who has formed a criminal empire after taking over an entire space station in the Outer Rim. Remy hires him as a bodyguard and they head over to Nar Shaddaa.

They take a bounty on a lady scientist who is supposedly wanted for defecting and running off to the rebellion. So we rock up at this swanky af hotel. An old Chiss soldier, a woman dressed like space Harley Quinn on steroids, a Gamorrean in battle armour, coconut bra and a hula skirt and a Twi’lek that looks like she lives at the casino. 

We hire the penthouse suite and do some recon on the target. Twi’lek orders room service and porn on the holonet. A maid arrives with room service. We tell her to strip and eat the food. Lekr uses his surgeon sewing skills to make the maid outfit fit the Gamorrean by sewing the drapes from the hotel windows into the dress. The Twi’lek hides in the room service cart.

At some point, we order a giant toy bear and Remy hides knockout gas inside?

Anyway, we rock up on the floor where the target is. Gamorrean wearing maid outfit goes first with toy bear and dining cart. Knocks on door. “Room Service.”

Chick opens the door and sees a Gamorrean holding a bear. She suspicious af. We activate the bear but she dodges out of the way. She’s holding a gun. Gamorrean pulls out his vibroaxe and knocks her out with the butt. We all pile into the room. Everyone on the floor heard the gun go off.

Lekr checks on the target and shoves her inside the room service cart. Hotel security knocks on the door. Remy, with extra charisma, tells him we were making fondue and it exploded, that’s why it sounded like there was a gunshot.

Dude kinda buys it and leaves. We leave some time after. Get to the Lobby. Police are there. Remy and the Gamorrean deals with the police while we make off with the room service cart and our target. 

Lekr and the Twi’lek get stopped walking down the hall.

“You’re not supposed to be here.”

Lekr says “Fire.”

“What?”

“Fire.”

“What are you talking about?”

Lekr punches the fire alarm,

“Fire.”

The sprinklers go off and cover the hallway in concrete foam.

Remy and the Gamorrean are out of the hotel. In comes our last player who’s wearing a mech suit. He flies in and smashes us out of the concrete. We leg it to the spaceport, hop on our ride and go.

We call the dude who gave us the bounty. Turns out the folks that hired us want her eliminated. The crew starts arguing how we’re gonna kill her. Someone says gunshot. Remy wants giggle gas. Gammorean says battle axe.

While they’re arguing, lady wakes up and Lekr’s just like, don’t worry, it’s gonna be okay and injects her full of morphine.

By the time everyone’s finished arguing, she’s dead so the pilot decides to fire her out of the airlock and use the exhausts to burn her body and get rid of the evidence. 

Lekr develops a severe drinking problem over the course of this campaign. XD

- can’t read and is ashamed. No one finds out until later when maybe he gets asked to read something?

- Has a great memory and that how he hid that fact, only needs to be told things once or twice before having that knowledge (ex. Ship parts, chemicals, technical stuff)

- Self taught chemist! Makes hisbown explosives in a very slapdash way and they work right most of the time

- Knows sign, not a lot at first but picks up more of it from Malak

- His skin is super soft! Except for his hands

- His favourite colour is a bright pink

- Has a huge crush on Woad ( @of-stardust-and-wanderlust )

- Sometimes doubts his place with the Angels? He doesn’t feel like he has much to offer

OOC OC swap: My OCs have families that tried. Maybe they weren't great- in Rek's case they were very bad, in Chelago's it's just "we would have liked grandkids and couldn't you have gone into STEM?" but they were still very proud. They did their best and cared about the kids. I've never really had a lot of interest, for myself, in stories where the parents are monsters. Not hating on other people's choices, but it's not my jam.

Some of my OCs had really supportive parents (like Silas and Aawari, or Delta and Ava, or Perseus) who loved them no matter what they did with their lives but yyyeah, most of the others unfortunately had really shitty parents for the most part :’) I feel like Dawn’s father deserves the ‘worst father award’ though, for picking up a traumatized orphaned Zeltron little girl off the streets and enrolling her into secret services at barely thirteen... Causing her to undergo sexual and mental trauma for years which eventually almost ruined her entire life. Yay for happy backstories!Overall I’d say I don’t care much about what I do with my OCs’ parents, I tend to just come up with backstory elements and I don’t really care if it ends up making 70% of my roster victims of abusive parents, so long as I never portray it in a good light or in a “but they secretly loved their child!!” (cough Thanos cough) sort of way.
