I personally can't headcanon Ranni as anything other than a pure caster, wielding phenomenal cosmic power at range but with the constitution of a wet kitten.
I see Rennala pretty much the same way. She probably couldn't entirely avoid hand-to-hand combat during the Liurnian wars, and she probably knew how to use that Urumi, but more as an emergency sidearm than a main.
But she's also like twelve feet tall and part giant.
I love the mental image of some Golden Order lordsworn neglecting to consider that fact and trying to melee the caster. Guy thinks he's going to make an easy kill and get the glory of slaying the Full Moon Witch, only to get close and realize that he barely comes up to her waist in the instant before she punts him across the battlefield.

Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon || Boss Designs of Elden Ring #5
In the magic academy of Raya Lucaria, sealed away in a library by her rebellious subjects, you find the Queen of the Full Moon, Rennala, hovering serenely in the air, caressing a mysterious amber egg.
She's obsessively studying the art of reincarnation, birthing and re-birthing an army of her "sweetings" in her own image, while outside the academy she once led slowly falls to ruin.
Her heart was broken by the betrayal of her husband, and her mind ensnared by the amber egg he left her, and from that perspective, Rennala is a tragic story of love betrayed and bonds broken, and what heartbreak can do to a person.
... but what if that's not all there is to the story?
