A little copium on this insane day *RGG Summit Spoilers*

Dw guys kiryu will be okay cause can u imagine a guy who has been shot, stabbed, bashed in the head, and fought multiple tigers at once and is still okay.. dying from cancer? I think it would end up sending a horrible message about cancer being unbeatable if written like that, considering a dragon couldn’t even do it.

Plus in the summit when they discuss it, Yokoyama reminds everyone how just because he’s sick doesn’t mean it’s Kiryu’s end. Maybe this is just the wakeup call he needs to genuinely retire.

I’ll also add Kiryu’s VA, Takuya Kuroda discussed his own battle with illness at the summit (not sure if it was cancer but I have heard he had to give up his career acting on screen because of illness) and said how he used his own experience being sick to fuel his acting of Kiryu in this game. I can only hope Kiryu will beat his own sickness the same way Kuroda-san has done himself.

Prediction for Yakuza/Like a Dragon 9:

Kiryu looks pretty rough at the end, but he's still seeking treatment. It wouldn't be narratively satisfying if he ends up dying between games, so I think he's gonna beat cancer.

However, I don't think he'll ever really "recover."

Both Ichiban games have had a major character who uses a wheelchair. Unfortunately, both of them have been villains. Masato Arakawa/Ryo Aoki's bitterness turned him into a monster, while Eiji Mitamura was just a monster who faked disability to play on Ichiban's sympathy. Neither of those are great portrayals, but they do work for the story. So I think it's time we have a major protagonist in a wheelchair.

Kiryu beats cancer, but it weakens his body so much that a lifetime of getting the shit kicked out of him finally catches up. I think he'd still be able to stand and walk for short periods so they can have a discussion about how that doesn't mean he can go without the chair.

hey can we talk about kiryu being fucking awful at disguising himself? just really bad at being discreet in general like

he shows up to events (i.e. the funeral in yk1, y7) "in disguise", which is actually just a different suit + sunglasses (to some extent i get that when you wear the same suit for 20-30 yrs to the point where ppl impersonating you include it, wearing a different suit might be legit good enough but. come on man. clark kent ass)

in y5 when he moves away from morning glory but keeps wiring them money and haruka's like "jeez dad. you're really not good at this"

and then he also chooses suzuki as his fake ID taxisona name, which is literally the fake name saejima used in y4. i mean there's no reason NOT to steal it but it feels a little lazy

in y6 the several times he goes into smth with a ski mask on for discretion and then takes it off for literally no reason

in y7 when he reveals he's actually alive and saejima and majima are BOTH like "oh finally. we knew you weren't dead lol"

in the trailer for gaiden when he's like working undercover and his codename is joryu. like aye good thinking babe they'll never catch you now

in y8 his hair's gray and ungelled and he wears different clothes and (assuming he hasn't fully retracted his fake death) this is still his idea of disguise. not dyeing his hair and letting it lie flat/dyeing it gray/getting a wig that makes the top of his head look slightly too tall. as a possible disguise he's improved but like. not beyond halloween office party levels y'know

I'm always going to be thinking about how poorly Kaoru was handled in Yakuza Kiwami 2. She's introduced as hypercompetent (she intimidates yakuza, fights along Kiryu in street fights, is a skilled programmer), then none of those skills come up after she and Kiryu get together. She doesn't stand up against a group of men harassing her when it seems in character for her to do the contrary. Kiryu has to come and save her. When her brother and boyfriend are fighting to the death, she's not allowed to do anything but stand around and emote. The conversation on her date with Kiryu about having to put on a face to be treated seriously for her job was interesting, but I wish she didn't get undermined at every point after that.

And then in the beginning of the next game she's just written out. The absolute whiplash of Kiryu and her believing they're going to die, so the last thing they do is profess their love and make out, then by the next game they're separating because they can't do long distance. I opened up the character and relationships menu and Kiryu and Kaoru's relationship is "mutual understanding" lmao??? Win for feminism, woman chooses career over man. Loss for feminism, her career move was a narrative excuse to sideline yet another woman in this series.

#the condition of female characters in this series is abysmal #i wonder what would have happened if she'd continued being Kiryu's love interest. I don't imagine she'd be written much better #sorry Kaoru. you didn't deserve all that #my ideal situation for her would be she and Kiryu still mutually break up in y3 #but she stays in Japan as a recurring side character #my txtstuff #yakuza spoilers #rgg spoilers

At the point I'm at in Yakuza 5, I'm still not sure how I feel about Daigo. Like... Him as a fuckboy in the earlier games is still firmly in my mind.
