Monster hit

Albrecht Dürer had a showman’s instincts for killer subject matter. When history’s greatest print-maker decided to create an image of the rhinoceros that had visited Lisbon in 1515, it became one of the most influential animal pictures ever.

Prints charming

Perhaps anticipating high demand, Dürer rendered the animal not as an engraving, but a cheaper woodcut, which meant it could be quickly and easily reproduced.

Animal magic

Are those shoulders and flanks or plates of armour? Dürer had never seen his battleship of an animal in the flesh. His woodcut is derived from a written description and sketch by an unknown artist. It combines his passion for science with his gift for the awesome and fantastic.

Reality check

It’s a pre-eminent example of art besting reality. In Europe, Dürer’s rhino was taken to be the real deal well into the 18th century, when actual rhinos toured the continent and dispelled the illusion. Prior to that it inspired work as diverse as illustrations in naturalist books, the Duke of Florence’s emblem, and a relief sculpture on the doors of Pisa cathedral.

In a detailed and commanding woodcut, Dürer records the arrival in 1515 of the first rhinoceros in Europe since the third century A.D. (above). Although Dürer's depiction is captivating, it is not faithful to nature, and it had a profound impact on subsequent depictions of the rhinoceros in natural histories, paintings, and the decorative arts until the eighteenth century.

Clara was een Indische neushoorn. Haar moeder werd gedood toen ze slechts een maand oud was. Zij werd in huis genomen door de directeur van de VOC-vestiging in Bengalen tot zij in 1740 naar Nederland werd verscheept.

Tot Clara in juli 1741 in Rotterdam voet op Europese bodem zette, bepaalde Albrecht Dürers houtsnede Rhinocerus uit 1515 hoe men op ons continent dacht dat een neushoorn eruitzag. De daarop afgebeelde neushoorn werd begin zestiende eeuw naar Lissabon verscheept. Dürer had het dier zelf niet gezien, maar baseerde zich op beschrijvingen en een tekening van een onbekende kunstenaar. De afbeelding bevatte een aantal foute anatomische details (zoals een huid van harnasachtige platen en een extra hoorntje op de rug). Nog in 1731 produceerde de Meissener porseleinfabriek een neushoorn voor de porseleinen dierentuin van de hertog van Saksen die was gebaseerd op de houtsnede van Dürer.

Zodra Clara in Nederland was aangekomen, werd ze tentoongesteld. De belangstelling voor het exotische dier was overweldigend. Een jarenlange toer door Europa volgde en overal stonden mensen in de rij om Clara te zien. Toen zij op 1 augustus 1742 tentoon werd gesteld op de Dam in Middelburg, kwam advocaat Pieter Boddaert meteen naar haar kijken. Hij plakte het aanplakbiljet dat in de stad was verspreid in een notitieboek. Hij vermeldde erbij dat de afbeelding niet klopte met de neushoorn die voor hem stond. De afbeelding was dan ook nog gebaseerd op de houtsnede van Dürer.

Clara werd tijdens haar leven bestudeerd door wetenschappers en afgebeeld door kunstenaars. Zij werd een ware beroemdheid. De afbeeldingen van Clara begonnen het langzamerhand te winnen van de Rhinocerus van Dürer. In Venetië schilderde Pietro Luonghi in opdracht twee schilderijen van Clara met vooraanstaande families.

In 1747 verscheen een nieuwe prent van Clara. Daarop zijn ook haar eigenaar, voormalig VOC-kapitein Douwe Jansz Mout, en het schip waarop Clara naar Europa werd verscheept afgebeeld.

Ervaren dierenschilder Jean-Baptiste Oudry schilderde in 1749 een levensgroot portret van de beroemde neushoorn. Ze kijkt de beschouwer recht aan. In werkelijkheid is het zicht van een neushoorn echter beperkt.

Bronsgieter en klokkenmaker Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain maakte exclusieve klokken voor de elite. Na haar bezoek aan Parijs in 1749 gebruikte hij een beeld van Clara als drager van zo’n klok, staand op een muziekdoos.

Op 14 april 1758 stierf Clara op eenentwintigjarige leeftijd. Ze had haar hele leven nooit een andere neushoorn gezien. In 1758, kort na haar dood, maakte hofkunstenaar Peter Antoon Verschaffelt een natuurgetrouw marmeren beeld van Clara. De porseleinfabriek in Frankenthal verkocht porseleinen beeldjes van het beroemde dier die waren gebaseerd op het werk van Verschaffelt.

So I searched up his first and last name and it was apparently Japanese like Wuut? Why Japanese? Then I remembered. Because he was a Japanese Rhinocerus Beetle! OHHH.
