Patrick had always loved Muggle magic-- card tricks, slight of hand, the art of smoke and mirrors. Even as a kid he’d loved it. Finding out he had real magic and it didn’t use a single goddamn card had been a fucking let down honestly. He kept up with the magic scene still (not hard to do, it wasn’t a big scene), even read the articles to Seamus. Seeing Rishan Amin in a park of all places actually made him drop his drink.
“No way!” He said with awe, gaping in amazement, “No fucking way! Mr. Amin? Is that really you? I’m like, I’m a huge fan.”

-- CHARACTER --
Name: Rishan “Rhys” Amin Faceclaim: Manish Dayal Age: 29 Blood Status: Halfblood Affiliation: Neutral Former School & House: Hogwarts, Slytherin Occupation: Stage Magician and Professional Trickster
-- BIOGRAPHY --
- Rhys and his twin brother, Ravee, got to live the best of both worlds as half-bloods. They enjoyed the fantasy that muggles created. For Ravee, that was comic books about superheroes. For Rhys, it was stage magic.
- When they went to Hogwarts, Rhys was sorted into Slytherin and Ravee in Hufflepuff. It didn’t matter that they were in different houses, because they were still the closest of friends. They helped each other study, and, when it was necessary, even swapped places with each other. Very few people could tell them apart.
- After school, Rhys was eager to enter the world of performing. He wanted Ravee to go with him as a double act, but his brother didn't care for the limelight like him. He joined the Hogwarts Staff as the muggle studies teacher while Rhys started performing on street corners in muggle London.
- There were still times that the two swapped places though, when Ravee needed a break. Rhys would take over a lesson and none of the students would have a clue. At least, all except one. One year, there was a girl who saw right through him. She was observant and sharp, like him, and he made a note to keep an eye on her.
- It turns out, she did something similar. After she graduated, she ended up finding him and joining his act. She came from a family of performers so she had the necessary skill set, but it was also more than that. Right from the moment they'd made eye contact across the classroom and she'd fixed him with that knowing, insider stare, he'd known. A magician was only as good as his assistant, and Celeste was his key to success.
- After trying to start their act in London and finding little success, the two travelled to America - the land of opportunity. Things were rough at the beginning. They moved from shitty apartment to shitty apartment, booking gigs where they could, earning favours where they couldn't. Behind closed doors, Rhys did things to earn money and make connections that he'd never admit to Celeste. He'd promised her the stars, and he wasn't going to stop until he'd made good on that.
- Unfortunately, even as they started getting more successful professionally, the struggles they faced at home kept building. They were tired and irritable and it wasn't too long before they got into a nasty fight. Rhys said some things he instantly regretted, and Celeste left. It was only when he was alone in his apartment that he realized that his feelings for her - that his driving need to give her a good life - were more than just professional. He was in love with her. Perhaps he always had been. But it didn't matter. He'd lost her, and wasn't good enough for her anyway. She deserved the stars, and all he could offer was smoke and mirrors.
- When she came back, he apologized for everything he'd said. He promised he wouldn't be so intense, and he'd listen to her more, and that there was no one else in the world he'd rather perform with. He's doing his best to honour that.
- Rhys and Celeste frequently use magic in their act and as a result, have definitely had to run away from MACUSA once or twice. Not only do they use spells, but Rhys is a Legilimens and Celeste is an Animagus.
- Having reached a level of fame that makes them both international sensations, Rhys and Celeste have returned to the UK to dazzle and bamboozle a new audience.

Ednyfed Fychan: Father of the Tudor Dynasty
by Nathen Amin for Historic UK (2015)
Tumblr media
[Alabaster tomb of Ednyfed Fychan’s descendant, Goronwy ap Tudur (d. 1382), and his wife Morfydd at St Gredifael’s Church, Penmynydd. Goronwy ap Tudur was the paternal uncle of Owen Tudor, grandfather of Henry VII]
When Harri Tudur, better known as Henry Tudor outside his native Wales, ascended to the throne of England in 1485 as Henry VII, it completed an incredible rise from servants to the Princes of Wales to kings in their own right within 300 years for the family from which he hailed. Contemporaries, much like the modern antiquarian, were aware of the Tudor Dynasty’s Welsh ancestry and the first Tudor King himself was not shy in utilising Welsh symbols for his personal badges. Dragons, for example, littered the Tudor court.
The direct Tudor line ended with the passing of arguably England’s greatest monarch, Elizabeth I, in 1603. But with whom did this famous dynasty begin? The end is famous, the beginnings obscure.
When discussing the Tudors as a family, the non-royal patriarch of the dynasty is accepted to be the honourable and competent 12th century noble, Ednyfed Fychan. Whilst not a prince of great renown or a famous individual from history, it is Ednyfed who is central to the later Tudor story for two prominent reasons. Firstly, it was through his sheer hard work that he established his family and offspring as invaluable servants to the Gwynedd Princes, thus ensuring his future descendants’ influence in the governance of the region. Secondly, Ednyfed married a South Welsh Princess with a prestigious bloodline, which gave his children royal connections.
It is fair to say then that this ardent statesman could arguably be credited with being the patriarch of the Tudor family in that he was the first notable male-line ancestor of the later Tudor Kings.
Ednyfed Fychan was born around 1170 and would prove to be a warrior of a man who assiduously served Llewelyn the Great and his son, Prince Dafydd ap Llywelyn, as seneschal of the Kingdom of Gwynedd.
The most basic function of a seneschal (or distain, in Welsh) was to supervise feasts and domestic ceremonies; they were sometimes referred to as stewards. As valued and loyal soldiers, these seneschals were also occasionally required to dispense justice within the kingdom and could be relied upon to represent the Princes in their absence, as well as witnessing and verifying important Princely charters. In many respects, one could consider the seneschal to be a kind of Chief Councillor, or even an early version of a Prime Minister for the Kingdom, and would in essence be the most important and valued official in employ.
North Wales had always been a tribal region and in order to resist English domination, the need to implement a feudal system with greater central control was imperative. This bureaucratic reorganisation from the Princes of Gwynedd allowed Ednyfed Fychan and his descendants to prosper, securing a place amongst the ruling and administrative elite of the region.
Ednyfed himself was considered to have been a valiant and courageous warrior, as well as having the ruthless streak needed for warfare in the Middle Ages. He is said to have come to prominence whilst in combat against the army of Ranulph de Blondeville, 4th Earl of Chester, who attacked Llewelyn at the behest of King John of England. The story goes that Ednyfed beheaded three English lords in battle and carried the bloody heads to Llewelyn in tribute. This act was commemorated by his Prince by commanding him to change his family coat of arms to display three heads, a gruesome testament to his value, worth and loyalty.
Ednyfed probably came to this position of seneschal by 1216 which would have meant he was present at the council Llewelyn the Great convened at Aberdyfi, a key summit at which Llewelyn asserted his right as Prince of Wales over the other territorial rulers. Ednyfed would also have been at his sovereign’s side during the Treaty of Worcester negotiations in 1218 with representatives of the new boy-king Henry III of England. In addition to his place of privilege at such significant talks, Ednyfed was also present in his role as an experienced and proficient representative of Llewelyn in a consultation with the King of England in 1232, undoubtedly offering his valued input during the tense discussions.
His loyalty to his King was appreciated and he was rewarded with the titles of Lord of Brynffanigl, Lord of Criccieth and Chief Justice, further strengthening his power. In 1235, Ednyfed was also believed to have taken part in a Crusade as all God-fearing soldiers of the era strove to do, although in his case his journey was noted for the fact that Henry III himself arranged for this powerful but respected Welsh statesman to be presented with a silver cup as he passed through London.
Away from his impressive and proficient professional life, Ednyfed had estates at Brynffanigl Isaf, situated near modern day Abergele on the North Welsh coast, and also at Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, now merely a suburb of Colwyn Bay better known by the anglicised name Rhos-on-Sea. It was at Llandrillo that Ednyfed built a motte and bailey castle atop the Bryn Euryn hill, which was the predecessor to the 15th century manor Llys Euryn. Furthermore, he also held lands in Llansadwrn and it’s not too far a stretch to assume he also had interests on Anglesey where his family controlled various seats.
Because of his loyal service to his ruler, Ednyfed was given an unusual reward in that all descendants of his grandfather, Iorwerth ap Gwgon of Brynffenigl, would be accorded the honour of holding their lands free of all dues to the native Kings, something which no doubt was a great benefit in the time of feudalism. The fact he was rewarded in such a way suggests he was conceivably indispensable to the two Princes and served them diligently.
It was Ednyfed’s marriage, however, that would secure his place in Welsh history, as it was the matching of two historic and noble Welsh families which would ultimately produce the future King of England. Ednyfed had, in fact, already been married once and been blessed with a brood of sons, although the identity of this woman has yet to be sourced satisfactorily. Although probably not momentous or particularly significant at the time (albeit noted by some Welsh chroniclers), the dutiful and loyal Ednyfed took Gwenllian ferch Rhys as his bride, one of the daughters of Rhys ap Gruffydd, the revered Lord Rhys, Prince of Deheubarth. Gwenllian’s mother was Gwenllian ferch Madog, a lady who herself had a notable genealogy as the daughter of Madog ap Maredudd, the last Prince of a unified Powys. An interesting point to note, and possibly something that played a part in this union between a royal lady and a mere member of the nobility, is that Gwenllian ferch Madog’s nephew through her sister Marared was in fact Llewelyn the Great himself, the man whom Ednyfed had served valiantly and bravely his entire life. This made Ednyfed and Llywelyn first cousins through Ednyfed’s marriage to Gwenllian ferch Rhys.
Ednyfed Fychan has been forgotten in history, his name unheralded even by the Welshmen he once served. It is possible to consider that without his diligent service to the Welsh Princes and successful marriage to a notable Princess, the Tudor Dynasty would never have had the opportunity to spectacularly usurp the throne of England in the way they did so famously at Bosworth Field in 1485.
Ednyfed Fychan may be forgotten, but his legacy lives on today, not only in the famous Tudor monarchs of the 16th century but also today’s royal family, his direct descendants.
Nathen Amin grew up in the heart of Carmarthenshire and has long had an interest in Welsh history and the Welsh origins of the Tudors. This passion has guided him all over Wales to visit a wide variety of historic sites, which he has photographed and researched for his book ‘Tudor Wales’ by Amberley Publishing.

I was tagged in a meme by @thisbluespirit! Thank you!
Last song listened to: “My War” from Attack on Titan. I absolutely hated this song when I first heard it, then it grew on me and now I adore it. It has the usual slightly nonsensical anime lyrics but it’s catch AF. I have listened to very little but AoT soundtracks for weeks...
Last film watched: It was “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” last week when I was away. I constantly need to refresh myself on the Elizabeth films whilst I’m trying to write my stupid fic, I dread to think how many times I’ve watched each of them, particularly the first one which is my all. The film I watched before that though was “Carol” starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara and I loved it, such a beautiful, natural love story. I can’t believe I haven’t seen it before now.
Currently reading: I’m making my way through the final few mangas of “Attack on Titan” as I simply can’t wait until 2022 to find out what happens when the final episodes of the anime air; the anime seems to be super faithful to the manga which is cool, I imagine what I read will be what I watch next year. It is slowly destroying my soul as I get nearer the end though. I have also just finished “The Red Prince”, the most recent biography of John o’ Gaunt, which was super readable if a little dramatic in places with its scene setting and stuff. Today I have received a second hand copy of the novelisation of “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (TGA again? I hear you sigh...) in the post so I may start on that soon, but I also want to get started on “Henry VII and the Tudor Pretenders” by Nathen Amin. Or I may just start them both at once, nothing like multiple books on the go.
Currently watching: “The Tudors”. I have been trying, half-heartedly, to watch the entire 4 seasons of this literal shit-show for years and have rarely made it far past season 1 since why would you watch once Sam Neill’s Wolsey has gone? I can proudly say I have got further than ever before and am currently on episode 9 of season 2! Though this show gives me whiplash, like the way it choses to depict things, and the random dramatic falsehoods it makes up, hurt my brain. But never mind. I had started to fixate on Northam’s Thomas More once Wolsey had gone but now he’s dead too and I don’t like anyone else. It’s such trash but entertaining enough, I guess. Not quite as trashy as “Reign” but it’s not difficult to rise above that. (Also, I am curious, does any man actually make the sounds Rhys-Meyer’s Henry does when he comes? What the actual... I’d be laughing at him.) I am also trying to watch “The Borgias” again after multiple failings but only made it to episode 3 before I thought “let’s concentrate on one trash can fire at a time”. I’ll come back to that one...
Current craving: That’s a broad question. I crave GR’s Walsingham, always. ;) Australia is a big craving, the worse because I’m not allowed to go there right now since the world being gripped in the pandemic as it is. Or if you want a tedious answer, I’m at an age where a good night’s sleep sounds mint, I crave that every day.
Tagging: As always, this isn’t an obligation, but if ye fancy it: @robins-treasure @captainofthegreenpeas @macpye @the-mcguffin @severinsnape @beardofkamenev

Books 2019-20
I didn’t bother with one of these booklist blog posts last year but I got curious as to what books I’d read this year. I don’t write a regular book blog so here are some short comments on the books that I’ve read starting in January 2019, more or less
Virginie Déspentes’ Vernon Subutex 1 & 2 made me feel that she is the author who best expresses in fiction a clear vision of the world in the first fifth of the late capitalist 21st Century, the first volume in particular.
I haven’t read a lot of poetry this year but I did begin 2019 with Pey Pey Oh’s Pictograph and Shadowplay by Phillip Gross; Lutz Seilor’s In Field Latin (thanks to translator, Alexander Booth) Later in the year, Alexander Booth’s own collection Insulae. All treasures. Another poetry pleasure was a re-read of Ifor Thomas’s Body Beautiful, a vision of the body as it the writer faces cancer. This is also the year that I delved deeply into Cavafy (which led me to re-read Durrell’s Justine.) This poetry created for me a feeling of space, opening up areas away from the rich density of prose.
After a second Moroccan visit, prose reading continued to circle the Levant: Abdellatif’s The Law of Inheritance; Olivia Manning’s The Levant Trilogy; Amin Malouf’s Ports of Call; and a new Mathías Énard Tell Them of Battles (translated by Charlotte Mandell).
Not so much reading on the noir/crime front this year but John Lincoln Williams’ Fade to Grey was an intriguing and action-filled investigation that exposed a complex Cardiff/Bristol underworld. James Lee Burke’s In the Moon of Red Ponies managed to skewer undercover American politics and arms trading while involved in a story of an Indigenous American on the run for crimes he may or may not have committed.
A group of writers that kind of fall together subject-wise are Chris Kraus, Olivia Laing, and Maggie Nelson: New York, Kathy Acker, S&M, Artaud, sex positive, art-queer. Have to include Cosey Fanny Tutti’s Art Sex Music here, too.
To put another couple of books/writers/artists together with them: Dreamweapon by Angus MacLise; and LouReed: A Life, by Anthony DeCurtis. They deal with directions in which I’m interested in taking my own creative work to some extent: nonfiction and performance art, particularly Butoh. After training in Butoh with Yuri Nagaoka and Seisaku, I picked up the anthology, Inside, Japanese women write on Japanese women. Inside covers in short fiction every stage of life from birth to menopause. Yuri’s daughter, Rio Minamoto, who has won a plethora of Japan’s most prestigious prizes, has a story in this, the only piece of her work that I could find in translation.
After re-reading the hardback copy of ICE by Anna Kavan, I read and re-read a lot more Anna Kavan, inspired by that and the Machines in the Head anthology from Peter Owen Publishers. I reviewed Machines in the Head for 3AM magazine. In connection with the review article, I also read Rhys Davies’s Honeysuckle Girl, a novel based on Kavan’s life. https://www.3ammagazine.com/3am/missives-from-a-parallel-dimension/
Speaking of anthologies, I was pleased to have story – Our Lady of Penrhys – in High Spirits: A Round of Drinking Stories, edited by Jonathan Taylor and Karen Stephens.
Outside of any reading pattern, I read three by Cynan Jones, Richard Hughes’ A High Wind in Jamaica (kind of like the Famous Five on an acid trip), two by the extraordinary Christa Wolf. Sam Shepard’s Spy of the First Person, Patti Smith’s The Year of the Monkey, Ann Quin’s Berg. Wayne McCauley’s Simpson Returns. Jean-Luc Nancy’s The Fall of Sleep.
Happy New Year Everybody
Here’s the full list more or less in the order of reading. All power to the makers.
