One of the interesting things about Endeavour series 6 and 7 is that neither is quite about what you think it is at first.
Series 7 is about a love story - but it’s not the lurid romance (with added equilateral love triangle of disaster-biness) that Morse finds himself in that’s the true love story, it’s the platonic love between him and Thursday.
Series 6, on the other hand, has both an emotional/personal ongoing plot, and a, well, plot-plot.
The emotional/personal plot is the surface one. The various things going on with Morse, Thursday, Bright, Box, Joan, Win. Everyone grieving, hurt, struggling.
But the plot-plot? That’s a battle between two genius puppet-masters, both sergeants, both hiding in plain sight, manipulating everything around them. One working for good, one for evil.
Jago sneered at Morse in that final confrontation that Morse couldn't see him for Box. But Jago never even got to find out that he himself couldn't see Strange for Morse.
It was secretly Jago vs. Strange the whole season, and we only find out at the end, when Strange wins. And when he takes down Fancy’s picture, that’s his victory. He puts all his pieces in place to get Morse back where he should be, avenge Fancy, bring down a crime organisation that’s preying on young addicts and that involves corruption in very high places, help Thursday redeem himself and Morse get his confidence back, and generally bring the gang back together. And he does it. He can’t do it alone and doesn’t try, but he’s the guiding hand behind all of it, giving the right prodding and pulling the right strings to then be able to let his colleagues do the rest.
Pratchett says of sergeants (military and “watch” - and of course we learn in the previous series that Thursday was also a sergeant, in WW2...):
“It is a very useful rank for the right man.  The optimum balance of power and responsibility.” And of course that quote from Night Watch is one that’s used about a sergeant who is also, in a different time, the commander of the watch. Russell Lewis is a massive Pratchett fan. So. :-)

Title: Nothing like poetry Author: greenapricot Fandom: Endeavour Characters: Ronnie Box Rating: Teen Wordcount: 1,256 Warnings: None
Ronnie’s in a pub. Not one of his usual haunts. Those are all dead to him now like he probably should be. It’s a startling thought. Uncomfortable. It’s been a month since he got out of hospital and the thought keeps popping up; a sinister thing hovering at the edges of his vision. A black mark on every day. He can’t seem to get rid of it, hasn’t managed to grab it and crush it to nothing either.
Whisky helps.
Mostly.
He downs the last of what’s left in his glass and gestures for another, shifts on his stool and grabs for the cigarette pack next to him on the bar. He pulls out a cigarette, lights it, watches the smoke swirl around him as he exhales.
He meant to leave Oxford. The night they let him leave the hospital he was going to drive away, leave his flat and his things and never come back. But fit to be released didn’t mean properly fit, not by a long shot. There was no one waiting for him when he shuffled out the door, the constant ache in his gut forcing his stride to slow, plodding steps. He hadn’t expected there would be. But he’d hoped, somewhere small in the back of his mind, that maybe Fred would have come.

Ronnie Box is truly the spinach of vegetables:
Talks a big game and makes life difficult for everyone with their bravado and yet wilts at the first sign of heat
Leaves slight weird aftertaste in your mouth (when cooked)
Still scrumptious though

Sometimes a work family is
- Four iron woobie heroic types with occasional arsehole tendencies but who are all basically awesome (Morse, Thursday, Bright, Jakes, also all three of Thursday’s immediate family, all seven in v different ways but the core is there)
- An ace, a cinnamon roll, and a snark king, all magnificent (Trewlove, Fancy, Max)
- The token normal teammate (Strange, ironically)
- Ronnie Box

I know that Bright is all upset and lonely in s6, but at least he has the smugness of knowing that it is Ronnie and not him that has to manage endeavour morse investigating police corruption for once.
