Happy day 300 of Putin's 3 day war. 80% of Kyiv is still without electricity, but you can buy someone some winter gear via Unite With Ukraine. we're halfway through winter, we can do this.

one thing i’m slowly picking up on is that a lot of the people who are saying ‘ukraine should negotiate with putin’ don’t actually realise that this war did not begin in february 2022. this war has been going on for over 8 years, and the february invasion was the final nail in the coffin that made ukraine go ‘enough. we cannot appease putin anymore, we cannot negotiate, we simply have to fight back’.
yanukovych was elected as president in 2012 on a ‘tighter ties with the EU’ platform. he proceeded to betray that platform, cosying up with putin and attempting to take ukraine in a direction which involved closer economic ties to russia. that decision triggered the euromaidan protests of 2013-14, the deaths of hundreds of ukrainian civilians, and eventually yanukovych fled to russia where he was granted asylum by putin himself. the berkut (special military forces) were dissolved, and with yanukovych gone ukraine signed the trade agreement with the EU. these events are known as the ‘revolution of dignity’.
putin’s response to this (ukraine’s pointed desire to be aligned with western europe, not russia) was to invade and annexe crimea. russian military presence was escalated on the peninsula, and nuclear threats were made (sound familiar?) to prevent ukraine and/or the west from doing anything to return crimea to ukrainian control. despite ukraine risking so much to become more aligned with the west, the west did nothing about this for fear of nuclear attacks. ukraine was told to just accept it, that this annexation was a necessary sacrifice for wider peace.
in 2015, putin began to send militant forces into eastern ukraine to actively back russian-separatist voices in the donbass. on a fundamental level, ukraine lost control of donetsk and luhansk due to putin shoving mercenaries into the region. similar to how putin actively placed russians into crimea to prove it was majority russia, he began to do the same in donetsk and luhansk. unlike crimea, however, there was no ‘official annexation’ declaration made... at least, not until february 2022, the day before the full scale invasion.
add in multiple cyber-attacks, false propaganda being promoted, and a year of military build up on the russo-ukraine border throughout 2021 and into 2022, and there is absolutely no argument that can be viably made against the fact that this war has been going on for almost a decade. and fundamentally, i don’t think a lot of people actually realise that. they realise putin is a maniac who believes ukraine is not a valid country, but they don’t realise that this invasion in february 2022 was not just a random decision putin made. it was the next logical step (in his mind) considering every step he’s made in the last decade has been met with appeasement, appeasement, appeasement. he has faced next to no consequences for what he’s done to ukraine. and so of course that has then made him go ‘excellent, time for another round then’.
the end to this war is full russian withdrawal. that is the only end to this war, the only end we should accept, and the only end which will actually be an end. putin’s threat of using nuclear war was precisely why the world did nothing as he annexed crimea. and it set a precedent that he could use that threat again and face no consequences. of course ukraine is fighting back. of course the world is backing them. we have to. we must. this war did not begin in 2022, it began many years before that. to quote zelenskyy, “everything started with crimea, and everything will end with crimea.”
ukrainian liberation (and that absolutely includes crimea) is coming. the trajectory of this war is only going in one direction, and that’s in ukraine’s favour. appeasing putin is what will make this war drag out for another decade or so, because we’ve tried appeasement for close to a decade already. and it didn’t work. it led to putin believing he had the right to begin a full scale invasion.

pspspsps, most of Ukraine is still without power, heating, and water. various NGOs and governments are doing all they can, but volunteer groups are always the ones who can help first and most directly - especially the volunteer paramedics and military corps, who are the guys helping people in active combat zones that the NGOs can’t go into. like I realize donating to military groups sounds weird, but given the complete lack of respect the Russian military has shown for peace corridors and basic rules of war, these guys are saving a lot more lives than they are ending them.
anyway here are a few groups I like in particular:
Come Back Alive, the big dick charity of them all
Ukrainian Association of Washington state: less familiar with them but they’re hosting Ruslan Gorovyi and motherfucker that’s all you have to say to me.
Hospitallers Medical Battalion are so fucking solid. they’re volunteer paramedics, so they’re the first ones going into combat zones to help civilians. I’m a little in love, honestly.
UAnimals has a patreon if you want to help animals and pets in Ukraine
All4Ukraine has a collection of individual fundraisers, so you can literally choose what you want to put your money to. a lot of them are actually cars, which may sound weird, but do not underestimate how utterly vital cars are for evacuations, ambulances, recon, etc etc, especially as winter begins. Ukraine is fucking cold, and it’s a huge country - getting people transportation is literally lifesaving rn.

👨‍💼 Meet Oleksandr Afanasiev, a young leader and professional aiming to change the world for the better.
🌐🤝 Oleksandr is an experienced individual in the fields of youth politics and international relations. He was a legal adviser to a Ukrainian political party, dealing with legislation and regulatory documents. For a long period of time, he was responsible for external affairs in a Ukrainian youth political organization and served as a delegate to one of the largest European youth political organizations – the Youth of the European People’s Party (YEPP). Recently, Oleksandr was elected to the Board of YEPP as the only Ukrainian representative and now holds the position of Vice President.
🎓 Furthermore, he has a very strong educational background. Oleksandr has completed two degrees: a Master of Law from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and a Master of Public Policy and Administration from Kyiv School of Economics. He has successfully completed two certificate programs from Ukrainian Catholic University in European Studies and American Politics. Oleksandr has participated in numerous educational programs in Ukraine and abroad, including being a scholar at the European Forum Alpbach.
💫💪 Despite having a good level of English, Oleksandr is willing to constantly improve it. Therefore, he believes that ENGin is a great opportunity to advance his speaking skills by practicing the language with native speakers. Oleksandr believes that participating in the program is a great opportunity to tell people abroad about the horrible tragedy unfolding in Ukraine. He is convinced that it is the duty of every Ukrainian to convey accurate messages and narratives about what is happening in their country, what they are fighting for, and why it’s also important for people who live far away.
🌎✨ Ready to make a difference? We invite you to join ENGin as a volunteer and become a buddy for individuals like Oleksandr, who aspire to create positive changes in the world. 🌟

Not gonna lie, my morale is at the lowest point it's been since the beginning of the invasion. Russians are successfully occupying more and more territories and shell frontline regions every day. People are dying, our culture and herritage is destroyed. International aid dwindled significantly because of american bullshit. Mobilization law has been signed and there is a chance that my family members get conscripted soon. Don't even get me started on internal political problems. A bunch of articles in foreign media talking about our defeat and "peace talks" (what a joke).
It feels like there were no at least moderately good news in a while. On top of that, the feeling that we are screaming into the void is stronger than ever. I'm happy when I see a foreigner online supporting us and spreading the word, because it gets rarer. Ukrainians feel like none of what's happening gets outside our info bubble. Most likely no one but Ukrainians will see this post either. Honestly don't know what to make of all of this.

the absolute best thing about Russia's partial mobilization is that they won't even be able to use it. all these conscripts will need to be trained, fed, transported, equipped, and paid. but who will train them? all Russia's battle-experienced troops are dead or on front lines. what will they eat? Russia can barely feed its fighting military, much less trainees. how will they get to Ukraine? not via the Moskva, that's for fucking sure. where will their equipment come from when, again, Russia can't even equip its troops as it is. and as for payment.... yeah, you're never seeing that money.
so basically Putin has incurred all of the extremely negative effects of mobilization but he won't get a third of the benefits. ya fucked up, my dude.

Wanna see how Russians hunted civilian cars in Kyiv region in March 2022?
Surreal now that it was all happening some 15 km from where I lived and I followed the local chats crying that "People, don't evacuate by the road leading to Zhytomyrska highway! Russians are hiding among trees off road there and shooting down civilian cars!!" in real time - and now I can actually see it happening on recovered footage from street cameras. Surreal.

every time I hear some dumbass on tumblr claim the Ukrainian government is anti-Semitic I want to beat the shit out of them with a chair. but I can’t do that, so let me hit you with some fun facts instead:
prior to the invasion, Ukraine had Europe's fifth largest Jewish population. (x)
prior to the invasion, Ukraine had the world's 11th largest Jewish population. (x)
As You May Have Heard, their current president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is both Ukraine’s sixth president and Ukraine’s first Jewish president. for comparison, the US has had 46 presidents and Biden is our second Catholic.
Ukraine has had a total of 16 Prime Ministers (not including 2 acting PMs), 2 of which have been Jewish: Volodymyr Groysman and Yukhym Zvyahilsky. (x)
in 2014, the governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ihor Kolomoyskyi, and the Ukrainian Speaker of Parliament, Groysman mentioned above, were both Jewish. (x) (x) btw, you’ll notice Putin features a lot in these articles...
this makes Ukraine the world’s first country aside from Israel to simultaneously have a Jewish head of state and a Jewish head of government. super neat!!!! (x)
Ukraine's Jewish population is majority Haredi and Orthodox. Hasidic Judaism actually originated in Ukraine. (x)
also of Ukraine's cities, the ones with the biggest Jewish population aside from Kyiv? Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Odessa. (x) go see what Russia has done to those cities. just go see.
not to seem like I’m pushing an agenda or anything* but maybe Vladimir ‘openly cites Stalin as inspiration’ Putin perhaps is not your best source of information?
