Briefly back from my (sort of?) hiatus to say holy shit, Oppenheimer genuinely blew my mind
#so i saw both barbie and oppenheimer the last couple days#while i really did enjoy barbie and found it really cute i didn’t *love* it#plot was kinda whatever and the whole message did sort feel like something i would have read on here when i first joined nearly a decade ago#ryan and margot were great though!#but oppenheimer…….#i don’t know if i’m gonna be able to think about anything else for the next week at least#what a fucking film#cillian and rdj were absolutely brilliant#i am genuinely fighting people if they both don’t win oscars#the last hour and a half was just captivating in every sense of the word#i don’t usually see a movie more than once in the theaters but i’m 100% making an exception here#christopher nolan you son of a bitch you did it again#the ending was so harrowing too#legit the best film i’ve seen in some time#anyway#i just saw it today and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since#what a picture#oppenheimer#also#since i’ve been seeing this discourse everywhere mostly from people that haven’t even seen the film#this film is not in the slightest fucking pro-bomb or pro-military complex????#it makes its stance on the bomb very fucking clear throughout and especially during the speech scene and the ending#i have no idea HOW anyone can come away from this film thinking that the atom bomb is a good thing or that oppenheimer was a good man#like did we see the same movie???#anyway i’m just annoyed by this disingenuous discourse#media literacy is dead

I don’t get the Barbie Oscars hype. Its message was great, but it wasn’t the greatest acted movie by any means. Some of the MCU movies had better acting and were better movies overall.
Yea, like don't get me wrong...I like Barbie! 😁 I really did! It was a cultural phenomenon, and I didn't realize it was going to make THAT much money, and be a popular as it was (even among men!). 👏🏾
Butttt.... Idk...I kinda think it was getting to be a little overhyped in a way? 🫣 (nobody shoot me please! 🙏🏾)
"Barbie" will probably still be nominated for Oscars (and deservedly so) for categories such as set design, costumes, music, and maybe even Best Director and Best Picture? But imo, it shouldn't receive any acting nods... not with THIS year's competition.
And Ryan Gosling being nominated for a Golden Globe last night for playing Ken was a huge joke I'm sorry lol 😆 Even he probably felt like it was a joke lol.
Don't get me wrong, Ryan was REALLY GOOD in "Barbie", and did an amazing job! He almost stole the show from Margot lol 😆 But to me, it just wasn't THAT great to garner a nomination.... not with this year's competition. But maybe that's just me. 🤷🏾‍♀️
I respect Greta though, and I love the cultural phenomenon that the movie was. As a HUGE Barbie Girl growing up myself, I loved seeing my favorite doll come to life on the big screen. 😁
But I still can't help but feel like it was a tad overhyped, and that had the cast makeup been different, it wouldn't have received as much hype as it did.

yesterday i commited barbenheimer and if you plan to do this, i suggest going Oppenheimer first, then Barbie
astoundingly, my favorite part of both films was the same:
the soundtrack
the production/set design
In both films, these were quite impressive
oppenheimer: i have come to the conclusion that oppenheimer was a not-very-interesting man surrounded by interesting circumstances. i thought the acting was all phenomenal, the cinematography was great. sound mixing could have been better. it is 3 hours long and really felt like it near the end. i thought the subject matter was well-handled and nuanced, and i really like the way it portrayed scientists. the ending conversation with einstein was one of the best parts of the film. i don't think this is a movie for everyone because it is so long and focused on such a depressing topic
barbie: i enjoyed this, especially the musical sequences. some of the jokes fell pretty flat; others really hit. will ferrell and the board members were a weak link - not even sure why they were in this. i thought ryan gosling and margot robbie were both show-stealers. the sets and fashion of this were AMAZING. i thought the core message was pretty solid for young girls, though it's not saying anything that's much of a revelation to older audiences

Barbie: a casual review
!!spoilers ahead!!
Tumblr media
So after I got my soul crushed by Oppenheimer this morning, I stopped at my dad’s to feed our cat, got chipotle for lunch, and then headed out to see Barbie at 4:00. Honestly, I’m glad I ended up seeing this one second, because I enjoyed it a whole lot more than I thought I would and I pretty much smiled through the whole thing. It definitely helped to lighten the mood after All That (review coming in like an hour or two probably).
Overall, I loved everyone’s performances and characters. Allen and Weird Barbie were really funny, and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s performances really stood out to me (no shit, they’re the two main characters). I really loved Ken and the whole war/musical between all the kens was amazing and hilarious. I really didn’t expect there to be a lot of depth and emotion put into Barbie and Ken, but the movie took a really surprising existential turn where they start to discover themselves and start to find out what being Barbie, Ken, and human even, really means. It was a really nice message about being more than what the world wants you to be and how no one has to be perfect. That whole scene with Barbie and her creator was sweet.
I also liked how aware the movie was of itself. It played around with gender roles and stereotypes in pretty funny ways too. I’m surprised about how much they talked about the unattainable standards barbie dolls put put there for girls, since the movie was cleared by the company itself. Also the patriarchy thing being simplified into horses and mini fridges and mojo dojo casa houses was way too spot on. I swear the weiters just talked to some frat bros and wrote down whatever they heard.
I know every ‘anti-woke’ commentator is gonna really lose their shit over this movie. I’ve already seen people calling it some super radical feminist movie that hates men or whatever. The movie really isn’t that at all but whatever you say, ben shapiro. It really isn’t that serious. Also, I just know that the Snyder bootlickers are losing their shit right now over that one line, which makes it even funnier.
My one complaint is probably just with the mom and her daughter, Sasha. The interactions between the mom and Barbie when they first meet is cute, but besides that, her and Sasha really weren’t that interesting. Also, some of the music was really mediocre (Lizzo’s song was great though).
Finally, I just wanted to say that it visually looked amazing. I loved how the whole barbie world looked and also Barbie and Ken’s outfits. Everything was really bright and bubbly but not in the overbearing way that I expected it to be.
Final Score:
Characters - 7/10
Plot - 10/10 - really, pacing was super good
Visuals: 10/10
Music: 5/10
8/10

you seen barbenheimer yet??
barbie yes, oppenheimer no. and i dont plan on going to see oppenheimer bc im soooo uninterested in pentagon approved movies humanizing the american military like i just dont care to sit thru 3 hours to watch some motherfucker make the worst possible choices that would end in nothing but suffering of millions and then feel bad about it as though that absolves him of the guilt. like u knew what would happen. the man who said "i feel i have blood on my hands" was the same man who was in favor of dropping his weapon of unprecendented destruction on unsuspecting cities. i just! dont! care! also infuriating to me personally that this sort of complexity and humanity is only afforded to people who are white and/or american. like can u imagine a multimillion dollar movie about fuckin. idk. isis or bin laden. they changed the world for the worse and lived layered lives. can u imagine what would happen if someone tried to lend those men the same nuance that white villains in history get. can u imagine the general uproar.
but anyway! barbie was fun & funky fresh even if some moments were kinda corny. might not be thee movie of all time but it got a few genuine giggles out of me and was just pleasantly campy & different from a lot of stuff that's come out recently. oscars for both margot & ryan immediately. i'm sure cillian murphy did a great job but i just... 🥱

I was very interested to see what Greta Gerwig would do with Barbie and honestly it was everything I could’ve hoped for and more.
I always had a tough time connecting completely with Gerwig’s film because while most people say that she depicts womanhood and girlhood perfectly, I couldn’t exactly relate to it because I’m not white. My experience was different and that’s okay! (Lady Bird is a really good movie) That changed with Barbie though, I don’t know I found myself relating a lot to it and I know my mom did too.
Anyways, Barbie is a both fun and sentimental film that is just a joy to watch with other people. The performances were great, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were perfectly casted. Not to mention the set design, which was amazing!

Now Scott in Barbie... I'll let y'all decide on that!🤭 //
He was just such a non-factor to me. Anyone could have done the role and it wouldn't have made any difference to the movie. Tbh, the same could be said of many of the support Barbies and Kens. The main players (Margot, Ryan, America, Issa, Kate, Michael, Ariana) were all great though!
Agreed.

barbie (2023) thoughts
spoilers under cut
Margot Robbie's acting was utterly incredible and worth the price of entry alone
My favourite scene was Ken's song and dance number, no notes. Ryan's gotten so much better since La La Land.
on the topic of Ken... let him kiss boys
Like for a film so couched in queer references and jokes, it could have used some actual gay text. It's 2023, let Ken be actually bisexual, not just subtextually.
On the other hand, though, aroace Barbie was important and powerful
Especially as a subversion of the default happy ending where the man wins the woman he has spent the whole film pestering
Most disappointing part of the film: everything about the Great (wo)Man Theory Ex Machina
For God to be Ruth the actual creator of Barbie, some middle-aged woman in a 1950s kitchen, who stepped in to tie up the narrative threads, totally undermined the film's attempt at a feminist message for me
Especially since Barbie apparently had to seek Ruth's permission to enter the real world.
would have strongly preferred if Ruth was framed less as god and more as a mother, parallel to Gloria's character arc with her daughter
also Ruth ('s ghost?) doesn't appear to have any actual agency at Mattel? Why is she stuck in the basement???
Speaking of Mattel in this film: you can't contrast the real world with the hypermaximalist Barbieland if all the Mattel employees in the real world are also cartoonish.
It's such a transparent way to avoid any actual narrative accountability for Mattel the company within the film and it rings really hollow
like this film is so brilliant at portraying the construction of gender (I feel like those essays have been written already, probably, so I won't bother explaining it here). But then you take off your Gender Lens and put on your Labor Lens and realize it's actually kind of regressive?
To be fair I was primed for paying closer attention to its treatment of class and labor because Barbie's journey begins with a song by Lizzo, who has been in the news for also (allegedly) fueling her narrative of female empowerment via labor exploitation. and that was so recent the film can't have known that. But we are in the midst of a labor movement in the US and that also makes this film's politics seem even weirder
Characters in this film are defined by their job. Both in Barbieland and in the real world.
We know Gloria is a mom, and she certainly has personality, but her other defining trait is that she plays with Barbies and then draws them... which ties into her identity as someone who works at Mattel.
Every other Mattel employee is so wholly characterized by their profession as Mattel employee it's a little ridiculous.
When the Barbies are freed from their brainwashing they remember their job titles as their senses of self: author, physicist, president, and in returning to that profession-self they are depicted as healed.
The characters who are dissatisfied with life in Barbieland are also the ones who don't have titles that equate to employment: (Stereotypical) Barbie, Beach Ken, Allan. You could make an argument for Weird Barbie as well
Mermaid Barbie's profession is Mermaid I guess
The film resolves the struggles of these characters by telling them to go find themselves. Literally in the case of Beach Ken. But through the film's language, that means constructing a self through capitalist labor. For example, Weird Barbie is given a political position with President Barbie. As Barbie enters the real world (where each named person is also associated with a job even to Gloria's daughter whose job is Student) this presumably extends to her.
It's this very capitalism-friendly (neoliberal maybe?) depiction of self-actualization through capitalist profession that feels out of place in a film that's otherwise trying to get you to read it as leftist
at least if you think the asides about consumerism or the interplay between emotion and logic were meant to be seen as commentary and not just jokes belittling radicalism
anyway if you liked the satirical and sometimes absurd vibe of Barbie but want something that commits to its kernels of commentary a little more, I'd recommend Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. They are like sibling works.
This post has come across as mostly negative but to be clear I did like the film. It's to its credit that there's enough of a philosophical stance being established to critique like this in the first place.
How many other comedies have a blue link to Siddhartha Gautama on their wikipedia page??

Aww I love that you cried too and yes my dad was so sweet about it!
I agree with your thoughts on the movie too - just so lovely, funny and depicted womenhood in a great way. I also loved the Barbie lore incorporated! I got so emotional in the beginning and during the speech that I was all out tears by the end lmao
I think my only mild complaint is the main speech felt a little white feminist in intent (but it's Greta so I expected it lmao). Only because it could apply to any type of maginalised group including men of colour like my dad who definitely felt it. He's very much the Barbie of our household - he does basically everything lol
Yess Allan was a fun time (though I am a lil worried the fandom is overhyping him up over Barbie) and I love that non binary are claiming him cos I can totally see that - he never really gave into the Kens when the movie's conflict arose but he doesn't fit in much with the Barbies either - 🌷
Yeah the one criticism I’ve seen about they’re film (that’s valid at least) is the feminism aspect of it and I agree it could have always been more fleshed out and less basic-level, but like you said it was made by a white women. I’ve also seen people say who have a more complex relationship with their gender say they didn’t love it which also makes complete sense. I kinda went in not expecting a lot regarding gender and the complexity of it, but more just hoping it would be funny and a wholesome feminine experience which it was so I was happy. I didn’t really expect it to say anything revolutionary if that makes sense.
Speaking of Barbie being overshadowed, I’ve seen so many people talk about Allen and Ken giving great praise for their performances but I’ve seen barely anything about how incredible Margot was?? Like she was sooooo good in this movie and really succeeded in making Barbie really fleshed out and interesting, but also the physically of the comedy of playing a doll was perfect. People were talking about how playing Ken makes Ryan Gosling deserving of an Oscar and like he was good but Margot was insane and definitely deserves one more.

'In the battle of the bomb vs. the bombshell… why not both?
Plenty of moviegoers are making the decision to watch Christopher Nolan’s atomic drama “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s colorful romp “Barbie” on the same day when the two tentpoles hit theaters on July 21.
With two weeks to go until the big day, AMC Theatres, the world’s largest cinema chain, is reporting that more than 20,000 AMC Stubs members have purchased tickets to see “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day.
Though it was apparently significant enough for AMC to issue a press release, it’s hard to contextualize the statistic because there aren’t a lot of comparable data points for guests purchasing tickets to see multiple movies on the same day — at least not ones that are publicly available. Moreover, the total number of AMC Stubs members, which includes A-List, AMC Stubs Premiere and AMC Stubs Insider, is unclear. Adam Aron, the CEO of AMC, said in early 2020 there were between 900,000 and 1 million A-List subscribers, which starts at $19.95 per month.
“That more than 20,000 moviegoers have already made plans and purchased tickets to see Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day is a great sign that the growing online conversation around seeing both of these incredible films is turning into ticket sales,” says Elizabeth Frank, executive VP of worldwide programming and chief content officer at AMC Theatres. “Just as exciting, with 10 days to go until these movies open, this may only be the beginning. From Friday to today, we saw a 33% increase in the number of guests who decided to create their own double feature by purchasing tickets to see both movies on the same day. We are thrilled to see this momentum.”
On paper, it may not seem like these films are catering to similar audiences. “Oppenheimer,” starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt, is a dark and gritty three-hour-long story about the American theoretical physicist who led the efforts to build the weapons of mass destruction that ended the war. Meanwhile, “Barbie,” led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is a neon-hued fantasy comedy about Barbie-Land expats Barbie and Ken, who go on a quest of self-discovery in the real world.
But the battle of the blockbuster-hopefuls, which hail from two beloved filmmakers and happen to scheduled on the same day, has become a full-fledged phenomenon known as “Barbieheimer.” The seemingly stark contrast between the $100 million-budgeted films has inspired countless memes, fan art and apparel.
According to early tracking, “Barbie” is expected to outpace “Oppenheimer” in terms of inaugural ticket sales. But there’s a chance that Tom Cruise’s big-budget sequel “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” which opens a week prior on July 12, could end up again in the top spot on domestic box office charts on that weekend.'

So last Tuesday (Aug 8th) we went to see The Barbie Movie. Now I wasn't a Barbie Girl growing up I had a hand full of dolls but I wasn't really into the whole Barbie thing as a kid I feel that I have more dolls in general now as an adult being I do collect alot of 1:6 Scale stuff of characters I like (mostly Lara Croft😁) and some of them are special edition Barbies. I just gravitated a lil more toward I guess you would say "boys toys" being I loved (and still do love) things like Star Wars, Transformer, Masters of the Universe, ect. I had tons of the She-Ra stuff to go with my He-Man 😄 Now my sister was a Barbie girl and had all the Barbie stuff and that is when I would mostly play Barbies on those rare moments when we weren't fighting and at each others throats. also yes there was of course collectable goodies for it and you can read all about that here.
Now as for the movie I thought it was going to be a lil weird, funny and silly and I wasn't wrong but it also had a very dramatic punch to it too but I can honestly say I did love it. I thought it was excellently done and felt it perfectly captured Barbie and her world.
The opening sequence where it is the 2001: A Space Odyssey parody that you see in the trailer is really good and it is a longer sequence and the voice over by Helen Mirren makes it even more funny and her narration through the entire movie is perfect and adds to the over all humor. Then after that you get to the actual main part of the movie and to Barbie Land and that were you are introduced to Margot Robbie's Barbie and everything she does I was like "this has to be in someone's imagination becasue this is exactly how you play"
but I would have to say the production design and everything was perfect! like when Ken (Ryan Gosling) gets "injured" and the whole "Doctor Barbie" thing with the fold out hospital was awesome!
The references, jokes and all the little things though the movie were awesome I had a few wide eyed gasps and plenty of smiles while watching this
The acting was I thought perfect everyone in this did an amazing job and Margot Robbie was perfect as Barbie (or stereotypical barbie as she is referred to in the movie) She was Barbie and I don't think anyone else could have done that better. Also Ryan Gosling as Ken (or I guess he would be stereotypical Ken/ Beach Ken) was perfect in this too! like I said everyone was amazing
The music is great and the Barbie dance number was really well done but the whole Ken dance number and follow-up Beach showdown/battle of the Kens I felt was just hilariously weird The song is really good but but that sequence in the movie is just purely hilariously weird
I thought it was funny were Mattel made fun of themselves as being this almost evil soulless corporation and everything being just grey and bland but when you went up to the boardroom everything was just pink and girly and they care about little girls dreams
Now when they get to the "real world" the movie does kinda hit differently it is still have the fun and silliness but at the same time you have a bit more of a seriousness and you do feel like you understand things a bit more. I can say that I felt that the movie did resonate with me alot and in various ways
There were moments were I totally could relate to Margot Robbie's Barbie on various levels and then also there were moments where I could totally relate to America Ferrera's character of Gloria on on various levels
I did kinda feel sorry for Ryan Gosling's Ken I was all "awww.." becasue he is so sad all he wants is to be noticed and loved by Margot Robbie's Barbie its like thats his purpose in life and he is trying so hard for that and she doesn't love him back it is kinda sad, so I kinda felt bad for him and felt his somewhat villain turn was kinda understandable becasue when they went to the real world he got love and respect from others but it was not the right kind but in the end when he come back to his senses that is all he wanted was the love and respect of Margot Robbie's Barbie.
In the end I thought it was excellently done and it is just a weirdly fun movie that you can enjoy. So I would highly recommend it. I really liked it and the ppl I went with did too we did a Girl's night for this one the boys didn't go. so we all like it.
There is no credits scenes but the credits did have an interesting lil animated thing where they showed alot of the dolls that inspired the movie.

Tbh! I am... cautiously excited for the barbie movie. I must agree that "Dance the Night" is a banger, and overall the movie does look... possibly promising! I really adore the set and character designs, and it looks like Margot and Ryan will be a great Barbie and Ken. We'll see how it pans out when it gets released in theaters, but until then, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it meets my expectations.
I want to be cautiously optimistic - I know Margot Robbie has stated the trailers are hiding a lot - but I just don't understand some of the decisions.
Ken being misogynistic to the doctor in that one scene rubs me such the wrong way. I'm not quite sold on Ryan Gosling's Ken in general either but maybe he'll surprise me.
Canonizing that godforsaken Aqua song makes my head spin. I am aware it's only being sampled but that doesn't matter. It's still being used. And why?? Why would you want to use the song that says Barbie and Ken are just dumb and horny??
I guess the sets in Barbieland do look kind of fun. I appreciate the generous amounts of pink; but it's not like that's the only color Barbie uses in excess. It's her signature color, but she's also been in plenty of blue, yellow, orange, and purple outfits. Hoping to see some other colors like those used too.
Also I am annoyed at the lack of references to the already existing Barbie movies that have been going on since 2001 BUT I understand this is Barbie the doll/icon and it doesn't have to reference them if they don't want to. I don't wanna whine too much about that anyway, especially since I criticized how others were complaining about how they aren't basing things off the LitD version of Barbie. It's hypocritical of me.
Overall I just don't understand who this is actually intended for. It doesn't feel enough like a Barbie movie made BY Barbie fans. It's giving me too many "SNL/making FUN of Barbie" feelings and how "THIS will change Barbie into a REAL feminist icon". Like, Barbie isn't perfect, but she does have a more feminist history than most people realize. We should continue to be critical of Mattel and its decisions of course, but she's more than just a blonde bimbo stereotype. And she is meant to be projected upon, meaning ANY kind of girl, or anyone of any gender really, can imagine who they can become. This INCLUDES super pink and girly people that just want to have fun and look fabulous and throw parties all that jazz. I'm afraid of this falling into the Hollywood idea of demonizing femineity, but I'm hoping to be wrong and eat my words.
I will say I totally agree with you on "Dance the Night". I've been listening to it a lot lately. It's very fun and makes me want to get up and dance (even though I'm not a good dancer lol).

Thoughts on BARBIE
Is it weird that the movie I most want to compare Barbie to is Doomsday?
In 2008, fresh off the success of The Descent (which is now entering its seventeenth year as the reigning and defending best horror movie of the twenty-first century), director Neil Marshall put out Doomsday, a movie that started out as a Dawn of the Dead clone, then became an Escape from New York pastiche, then became an Excalibur homage, before turning into a Mad Max ripoff. Most critics looked at that and called it derivative, but what I saw was the work of a director so ridden with anxiety that this was his last shot, that he made all the movies on his dream list in just the one, using Doomsday to fire all six bullets in his revolver.
I think I sense some of that same anxiety with Greta Gerwig's work on Barbie. Coming from independent auteurism into splashy studio filmmaking, I think she knew that if Barbie blew up in her face, neither side would have her back any time soon, so she threw every idea she had at the wall. Of course it has an eighties power ballad, a battle sequence, and a Grease homage fighting each other to the death in the third act. Of course her usual themes of mothers and daughters drifting apart and a monologue about the treacherous terrain of womanhood has to be held in a plastic pink dream house and share space with jokes about Skipper dolls whose boobs grow. Gerwig had fifty ideas for this movie, they were all good, she used them at the same time, and now precious few of them can breathe.
I liked Doomsday, though. And y'know what? I liked Barbie, too. I can quibble about tonal inconsistency, about how crowded the movie feels, about how the film feels less content to deal with the cultural impact Barbie had and more comfortable launching spitwads from the back of class, and that still doesn't change the fact that at the end of the day, Barbie is a comedy that made me laugh. The production design is vivid and original, the songs are bops, Margot Robbie found the right mix of earnestness and pluck, and Ryan Gosling can conjure laughs out of thin air. Note that while those two will get all the credit on the acting side, it's really America Ferrera, playing a beleaguered mom and Mattel employee in the grip of angst, who picks up the movie and runs away with it. Oh, and it has the single most hysterical final line in any movie I've seen since Eyes Wide Shut.
Barbie's good, but not great. I liked it, but I didn't love it. But that's enough.
Oh, and that anxiety Neil Marshall felt with Doomsday? He was right about it. The movie bombed, and apart from a few of the more battle-centric episodes of Game of Thrones and that shit-awful Hellboy reboot, he hasn't directed anything of note since.
But judging from the weekend's box office receipts, I think Greta Gerwig's gonna be fine.

"Basically everyone looks horrid. The only exception is HC, he is finally looks decent."
I agree, someone said he looks like a handsome devil, and I can see that, lol. I'm pleased the suit fits him, maybe the jacket is longer than necessary, but over all he looked great!
I am shocked of how everything about this premiere from the outfits to the location is trashy as you said. Clearly no effort was put.
About what I have witnessed and got from the videos and pictures, he is over directing her and she is over posing, she's definitely in her zone. And I must say, who ever styled her needs some jail time!
At least no one can argue that the energy and vibes were way off!
His pants were awful though, they were too long and not properly fitted. This premier looked like something organised at the last minute. It was just trashy. Freya, Anya and everyone looked cheap and trash. I mean it should have been some dress code or coordination. Look at Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, they are promoting Barbie almost like "in character". And this is how it should be done. The promotional period is about the movie, not about your personal taste in clothes.

2023 Movies You Need to Watch (Part Two)
Hi there, I’m sorry that I lied, I’m back now and everything is okay! I will be posting a review of Percy Jackson this Friday, but today we are going to finish this and get back on schedule.
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (Released July 12th)
Tumblr media
(Credit: Amazon)
Starring: Tom Cruise, Haley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
I have loved the Mission Impossible series since the beginning, and this is no exception. Tom Cruise still has it as Ethan Hunt. This movie plays around with the real threat of AI, which scared President Biden. This movie is the perfect way to showcase just how terrifying AI can be, while also being a fun action packed movie.
Tumblr media
(Credit: IMDb)
This movie will leave you gripping on your arm rest as you watch the intense thriller portions. While I may not be a fan of Haley Atwell’s character (and she is in here a lot), I can overlook that for more Benji (love him) and the other characters. I cannot wait for the sequel to come out, but until then, I’ll be patiently waiting.
Barbie (Released July 21st)
Tumblr media
(Credit: Microsoft)
Starring: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon
Director: Greta Gerwig
Now, onto the powerhouses of the summer. First, I want to talk about Barbie, which I watched second after Oppenheimer. Barbie was an amazing movie! I loved everything about it. From the perfect Barbie and Ken castings to the story of Barbie learning about the real world was something I didn't know I needed.
Tumblr media
(Credit: Deadline)
I have been a woman studies student for a while, and this movie literally answers everything that we discuss in our classes. I remember taking my boyfriend to watch this during the iMAX rerelease, and he cried during the montage part, and he squeezed my hand. He loves the movie, I love the movie, it’s great.
Oppenheimer (Released July 21st)
Tumblr media
(Credit: IMDb)
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Christopher Nolan
Oh, Oppenheimer. What a powerhouse. Fun fact, I did a History research project on Oppenheimer with two other classmates. We won our county’s competition. My portion was on the aftermath of the bombings, which included the Strauss’ hearings and the security clearance meetings. This movie was a masterpiece, visually, musically, every aspect was created with such care.
Tumblr media
(Credit: The Lantern)
And to everyone who thinks this movie is pro bomb, rewatch it. I promise you it is not. If you rewatch it and still come to that conclusion, I don’t know how much else to tell you than...you're dumb, I don’t know. Another fun fact, the first time I watched this, a guy gave me COVID.
Blue Beetle (Released August 18th)
Tumblr media
(Credit: IMDb)
Starring: Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo
Director: Angel Manuel Soto
Blue Beetle, the beginning of the James Gunn led DC Universe. Honestly, this is a great one to start on. Sure, it is a little predictable with the plot, what really sells it is Jaime (Xolo Maridueña) and his relationship with his family. This movie would not be what it is if it were not for the supporting casts’ relationship with Maridueña.

Maridueña also excels in this role as Jaime. I haven’t watched Cobra Kai, which is what he is known for, but I am completely sold on him just from this performance alone. He becomes the hero that not only his family needs, but the DC universe. I am disappointed it didn’t do as well as it deserved, so if you haven’t watched it yet, WATCH IT!
Five Nights at Freddy’s (Released October 27th)

Starting: Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Mary Stuart
Director: Emma Tammi
Oh my gods, Five Nights at Freddy’s. I have loved the series since its release in 2014, which is where I was introduced to Markiplier. So, since I was a big fan of the game, I have been waiting for an adaptation forever. Honestly though, I was concerned as to how they were going to do it, since there wasn’t really a cinematic story when it came to the first game. I mean, the first Game Theory video on Five Nights at Freddy, MatPat linked it to a real Chuck E Cheese Massacre. What they came up with was not what I was expecting in the best way possible.

This was a crazy ass movie, and it needed to be. Also, love that Living Tombstones had their song in the credits, I still listen to that song to this day. Along with that, Josh Hutcherson is amazing in this movie, carrying it, and my favorite, Matthew Lillard, steals the show. One critique I must say is that I wish they didn’t share that he was Purple Guy, honestly. Seeing the reveal would have been incredible, and with him saying his iconic line, it was a masterpiece.
The Boy and the Heron (Released December 8th)

Starting: Luca Padovan, Robert Pattinson, Karen Fukuhara, Gemma Chan
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
The Boy and the Heron is one of, if not, the best animated film of the year. I love it so much, and hope to one day watch the sub version. This is an amazing story that shows the journey of a boy going through life in the wake of his mother’s passing. He ventures into a mysterious realm to save his stepmother. I love Miyazaki films, and this is no exception.

He brings it in this film, especially casting Robert Pattinson as the titular Heron for the English dub. If nobody told me that it was Pattinson, I would not be able to tell. This movie relies on many different characters and the way they interact with the titular Boy, Mahito. It is honestly a joy to watch, and while it is a little jarring to hear some familiar voices in there, it doesn’t take you out of the movie.
Okay, I have some more movies, but we will do a quick Honorable Mention thing.
Honorable Mention Quick Round
Leave the World Behind
This Netflix movie is a must watch for those who are reliant on technology. This movie shows just what might happen when America falls victim to a cyberattack.
Fast X
This series never ceases to catch my attention. While this installment might be weaker than ones before it, I believe it is still an entertaining movie that will keep you entertained.
The Marvels
The latest movie in the MCU was a fun, action packed film. Iman Vallani is a standout in this movie, carrying it on her shoulders. It was also nice to see Zawe Ashton, Tom Hiddleston’s fiancee, in a role.
Air
This movie based on the Air Jordan shoes is an interesting movie that showed the legacy of the shoe that became one of the best selling shoes in the world. I would give this another watch on a rainy day.
Quiz Lady
This straight to Hulu movie brings Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as sisters trying to get their dog back by going on a quiz show. This is a cute movie, which especially shows just how far siblings are willing to go for one another.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Indiana Jones’ latest adventure was an action filled, well, adventure. I really enjoyed it, but this movie also suffered from an unlikeable sidekick in the form of Phoebe Waller-Bridges character.
The Iron Claw
A heartbreaking movie that I had known nothing about going in, and I was devastated by the end, crying until I had no more tears to give. Also, Zac Efron is unrecognizable in the role as Kevin Von Erich. Best role he has ever done, in my opinion.
Well, thanks for reading! I’m sorry it took me so long to get this out, but I am back now and I will make sure to meet my deadlines this time. This Friday is Percy Jackson and for the time being, I will be doing Wednesday and Friday releases, and it will literally be whatever I feel like writing about.

Margot Robbie did a fine job in Barbie and I do enjoy watching her performance, but the role itself just wasn't that…interesting? It didn't give her all that much to do. And yes, ha ha, real life imitating art with the man getting nominated, but giving the lead actress an award nod just because she's a woman in the feminism 101 movie isn't great either.
The things the author suggests should be rewarded - defying all critical expectations, making moviegoing fun again, and the message about women having to work twice as hard - are not things the best actress category is about, as far as I know. (which isn't far, because I quit watching awards shows before I even joined facebook, and I quit facebook years back)
I'd imagine those are more things for the best picture category. Maybe screenplay. Editing? Costume? Those kinds of categories as well, depending. But not necessarily actor. Again, though, what do I know.
Something, I suppose, because Barbie does have a Best Picture, nomination. And adapted screenplay (yeah, I bristled at that, too, but it does fit with the usual way things are sorted, even if I'd quibble with that usual way).
Oh, shit, they got a costume design and production design nomination as well. Maybe I'm not as clueless as I assumed (to be clear, I hadn't seen this article when I wrote everything above this paragraph).
Now, it should be added that Gerwig and Robbie were nominated — just not for best director and best actress. Gerwig got a nod for best adapted screenplay for the film, which she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. And Robbie's work as executive producer, for which she is up for Best Picture, included convincing Mattel to take real risks in how the character and the company was portrayed.
Oh wait, what? You mean, they are actually being recognized for some of the work they did? Damn.
And I want to really emphasize that we are talking about the Academy Awards, right? Like, the Olympics for movies, I guess. As in, few even get to that level of recognition/competition, let alone get nominated, let alone win.
So when you have a single movie hoovering nominations, there are that many more projects that don't even get into the running. So. Yano. Just to keep things in perspective here.
Back to Robbie's performance - it's not that she wasn't good, but there wasn't much there there. Barbie was the character around which the movie revolved, so her purpose was mostly to...be. I believe Robbie very much has the range for a Best Actress Oscar. This role, though? Not so much.
You know what role in Barbie did have that range more than the titular lead? Gloria. She's the one who delivered the fucking feminist monologue.
Actually, we can continue the art copies life copies art reading of the situation: the outrage over Ken getting a nom when Barbie didn't has completely overshadowed America Ferrera's nomination altogether. A white woman did not receive the praise many felt she'd earned by simply existing and being pretty while the recognition of a Latina's hard work gets handwaved away as a "nice, but." Sure, it's nice that the woman who absolutely nailed the most relatable part in the movie gets nominated, but it doesn't matter as much because Barbie herself did not. And yes, a lot of that Robbie snub outrage is because Ryan Gosling did get a nod. But folks are pissed about the lack of a nomination itself as well.
This is already way too long and I haven't touched on the Best Director part yet. Though there isn't nearly as much for me to say, either. I don't know why the Academy didn't pick Gerwig over someone else who got nominated. I can't argue it wasn't a decision based in misogyny.
What I can, and do, take issue with is the LA Times writer's need to be awful about the other projects in her attempt to somehow prove Gerwig was being unfairly treated. And doing so while tying in the historic nomination of a Native American actress is just bad. Especially considering the horrid smallpox joke and absolutely pointless Mount Rushmore gag that made it all the way through to Barbie's final product. (seriously, though, did nobody say anything? or did gerwig & co just overrule?)
The state of feminism right now makes me sad and tired and articles like this are doing nothing to help. Barbie shouldn't have been seen as revolutionary by so many of my friends, and yet. I can't believe we've managed to get to a place where I long for the fucking 90s.
