LMAOOOOOOOO
[ID: A panel from Uncanny X-Men #339. Joseph and Storm are sitting in the cockpit of the Blackbird, Joseph on the left, Storm on the right. They are both in costume and Storm is flying the plane. Joseph says, “I get the impression there’s some connection between Cyclops and Cable. Can you explain it to me?” Storm, smiling, answers, “I would be happy to, Joseph. Get comfortable. This will take a while.” End ID]

I don’t think I’d ever actually read Uncanny X-Men Annual #4 before, so that definitely clears up some questions I had about the whole Amanda Sefton thing. The Dante’s Inferno framework was very Claremont (bless his heart) and I loved the portrayal of Margali, with her being large and strange and very, very powerful. Also, it was some good good Charles content, him explicitly calling the X-Men his children in a moment of high emotion, and I like the idea of a Charles/Stephen friendship.
I thought it was neat that they specifically made the point that Ororo’s past as a thief made her accustomed to technology. I wonder how that could be updated for the technology of the modern era and what she would know about bypassing modern anti-theft measures. And the scene where Kitty wishes she had liked Kurt more (now that Kurt is dead) was really well-done. Such a pity Kitty and Kurt never had the chance to become friends. XP

why do you think Jean and Ororo are such good friends? What drives their friendship
Oh, good question! I think that one good place to turn for this is Classic X-Men #2, with the story "First Friends." It's clear in this story that they enjoy each other's company, that they find each other interesting. They have, up to that point, lived very different lives, and they both like listening to the other share their perspective and stories, but they also have the common bond of being two women in the X-Men. (Lorna is across the country at this point and unavailable for comment). In the story, they both get angry, lash out, and hurt the other, but they also both have kind and generous hearts and don't want to hold grudges against a friend.
So far we have: an ability to forgive, shared life experiences, and an interest in each other's lives and perspective.
They're also both very dynamic characters, in a way that is very Claremontian. Claremont believed in having his characters grow and change, and, as a character, Ororo believes in accepting other people when they change. She has this great line where she says to Scott that if he wanted to "preserve [Jean] like a fly in amber," then he never really loved her. Love, for Ororo, means accepting characters even as they move through different phases of their life and become different people. (We can see this approach in many of her relationships - with Kitty, Kurt, Betsy, Logan.) Jean sometimes has a harder time with change, but she's always very accepting of who Ororo is at the moment - whether that's a powerless punk leader or a nine-year-old adult. When their lives are as tumultuous as they are, having someone whose regard for them is constant is really reassuring.
And, of course, a big part of their friendship is a big part of any friendship: mutual respect. For one thing, they have similar but not identical positions on the topic of mutant rights. And for another, they really respect each other's decisions on the field. When Jean is going to sacrifice herself in X-Men #100, she asks Ororo not to try to stop her, and Ororo respects that. And later, when Jean is working with the M'Krann crystal in UXM #108, Jean tells Ororo that she is giving away her lifeforce and Ororo replies "It is my life to give," and Jean respects that. (This is in direct contrast to something like the Jean/Scott relationship, where neither of them will allow the other to die. Ororo and Jean will do their best to protect one another, but they ultimately understand that the other person makes her own choices.)
You'll notice that a lot of what I'm citing is from Claremont. Unfortunately, I don't think any other writer has really taken such an interest in both characters and in their relationship with each other. I would love for modern writers to address not just that they are friends but what it is that makes their friendship special.
Thank you so much for the question, it was really fun to think about! I love these ladies.

something about both caliban and kitty being named after characters from the tempest but kitty NOT being named after the character that caliban wanted to marry despite the fact that caliban did in fact kidnap her in order to marry her is so funny to me. christopher really was just throwing darts at a board and not thinking through their consequences, huh.
