💘 A fic you couldn't stop reading once you started

I don't know how this happened because I don't even remember looking up fic for Veep, but I got hooked on this Dan/Amy fic by @safflowerseason and if they finish it twenty-seven years from now I'll still read the end.

😭 A fic that ripped your heart out (but it hurt so good)

This One Direction end of the world fic - I know, shut up, hear me out - will destroy you a little bit. I still think about the slow-burn ziam and I probably read this thing a good ten years ago.

Reading this fic was so cathartic. Especially since 7x04 was rough. I still haven’t come to terms with this season because what is even happening anymore, but I really loved the dark undercurrent running through the story, Amy grabbing the bull by the horns and giving up her soul to win, Dan being intoxicated by it. It’s an interesting new dynamic for them, where Dan isn’t chasing after her and she’s lost her conscience, but the spark is still very much alive. There’s still a chance for things to work out and I wish this would play out in the show.

I would love to see Dan and Amy to have a conversation about his firing because I’m sure Amy’s reaction would be similar to the one in 5x03, where she would just laugh in his face and tell him how much of an idiot he is. But I don’t think we will, unfortunately.

I think 7x04 and coming to the realization that they’re descending into nihilism broke me a bit. I feel like Amy giving in and chanting no more math.

It got me thinking. I could be on board with dark!Dan and Amy. Now that Dan’s lost his 5% that needs to be loved and Amy’s lost her conscience, I want to see them be completely ruthless, power-hungry, and machiavellian, and take over D.C. no holds barred and burn it down. Together they’ll destroy the universe.

I really want to see if they’re going to tap into this new potential for them.

But of course they won’t. And if they do, they’re going to end up destroying it.

There are only 3 episodes left. What are they going to do with these two? I need 7x06 to be here so I can see what their interactions are like.

Any time there’s a bit of space, I start thinking of all the possibilities even though I know the outcome. And it’s going to hurt when they inevitably crash and burn again.

Being stuck at the airport sucks! I wanted to know, what do you do for a living? You said your sister works in DC what does she do?

Hi :-) I survived multiple airports and complicated lines to finally make it to my destination! Still making it through all the q’s...

I try to keep my online life and my *real* life a bit separate, so I’ll compromise and tell you about my education! I double-majored in History and French in college, and I have an MA in the Social Sciences with a specialization in political history. My day job is quite intense and involves a lot of writing in a non-creative capacity.

My sister did indeed work in DC, for a department in the executive branch, but she switched careers several years ago (like many people in Washington, it should be noted!)

thinking about @safflowerseason’s post, which i LOVED, and i think ironically one of the things that safflowerseason (and i) hated about mandel era’s veep--the fact that he dialed up selina’s misogyny to an absurd degree--is a key to understanding selina’s affinity for amy. selina’s misogyny was always there, just more subtle and realistically drawn in the iannucci seasons. as an amy/selina shipper, but not one who thinks of them as uwu girlfriends, i think that x factor is selina’s underlying, repressed sexual and/or romantic attraction to amy. the problem is that selina buys into the misogyny that dictates the way washington operates. she hates women, and that means hating both amy and herself, and for her to deal with her feelings for amy and her sexual attraction to women, she would have to reckon with all of the misogyny and self-hatred that has built up in her for years.

i think it’s interesting that safflowerseason mentions that selina could never approve of amy having a child because it would mean that selina moves down on amy’s list of priorities. part of why season four is a breaking point for amy is not just that she’s horrified at selina’s performance in office--it’s that selina’s circle has gotten bigger and bigger as she has stumbled into more political success so that amy is less able to monopolize her attention. selina hiring dan in the pilot is the first of many additions to selina’s inner circle and, yes, amy doesn’t want dan there because of their history but he also despises his ability use his smarm to cozy up to selina and influence her in a way that she can’t. in season four, karen is just the final straw, and it didn’t help that she was also uniquely incompetent and another woman.
