In our collection, we have icons dedicated to a variety of notable Orthodox Russian saints, and the name of Saint Macarius holds a special place among them. The ascetic and miracle worker established, at least, four monasteries in the Nizhniy Novgorod region, with the Zheltovodsky Makaryev Convent and the Makaryev Sviyazhsk Monastery being the most notable ones. The featured hand-painted icon dates back to the 19th century and features techniques common to the traditionalist movement in religious iconography.

Which great #saint, known and loved throughout the world (hint: especially in #Ireland ☘️), was during his lifetime, accused of being an “ambitious ignoramus”? Yes, #SaintPatrick - the Beloved #ApostleofIreland You might conclude that if St. Patrick himself couldn’t escape #criticism, neither can anyone else, saints included - and you’d be right. The experience of being #criticized (and also for many of us, the experience of having to give criticism) is usually an unpleasant one - yet it’s part of being a Christian. Jesus notes in Luke 7:31-34 with some exasperation, that people will always find a reason to criticize each other but “wisdom is justified to ALL her children.” Eventually, #Truth is revealed to all, whether in this life or the next. #SaintMacarius once sent a young man seeking #spiritualadvice to a cemetery with instruction to reproach the dead and criticize them, then flatter and praise them. When the man returned, the Saint asked what response the dead had made. The man replied, “None.” “Then,” said the Saint, “go and learn to be moved neither by abuse nor by flattery. If you die to the world and to yourself, you will begin to live for Christ.” Such #detachments are necessary in the lives of saints. Jesus’ time in the desert strengthened him to remain detached from the criticisms of those he would encounter in his ministry while still being able to minister the word of his Heavenly Father among the people and not allow them to make him a king by their praises before his time. It can be a lonely road, feeling the weight of such detachment. But when we remember our true attachment is to Jesus, we know we have found someone who truly understands our plight. With him by our side, we can drive out snakes and still preach the gospel with #love and #charity. For our #consolations do not need to come in this whimsical world but rather we can wait for them to come in a time and kingdom that is everlasting and rooted in Wisdom. Let that strengthen you. Christ within, beside you, before you is the hope of Wisdom’s glory! #meditationswithsaints #livinglent #lentenmeditations #saintwisdom #wordoftheday #wotd #sotd #bissisterhood #wakingeve https://www.instagram.com/wakingeve/p/BvGJgCbAVw1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1dgft4k5mmq4

Quote
The heart is but a small vessel, yet there are lions; there are poisonous beasts and all the treasures of evil. And there are rough, uneven roads; there are precipices. But there also is God, also the angels, the Life and the Kingdom, the light and the Apostles, the treasures of grace. There are all things.
St. Macarius the Great
