NEWS: Arrest of Metropolitan Arseny, Abbot of the Holy Dormition of the Svyatogorsk Lavra, Ukraine
Tumblr media
On April 24, 2024, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) conducted a search in the Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, detained the abbot of the Lavra, Metropolitan Arseniy, and informed him that he is suspected of disseminating information about the movement or location of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which is punishable by up to 8 years in prison. The accusation is based on the fact that in September 2023, during a sermon in the church, Vladyka allegedly told the faithful about the locations of checkpoints of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the Lavra and thus disseminated information of a military nature.(1)
After that, Vladyka Arseny was taken by the SBU to the city of Slavyansk, and then to the city of Dnipro.
That very night, the night of April 24-25, 2024, the Oktyabrsky District Court in the city of Dnipro fully upheld the prosecutor's petition and chose a measure of restraint for Metropolitan Arseny in the form of detention for a period of 60 days. The court ignored the defense's petition for house arrest and the possibility of applying bail. At about three o'clock in the morning, Vladyka was sent  immediately from the courtroom to the Dnipro pre-trial detention center.
Metropolitan Arseny suffers from serious illnesses and therefore requires constant medical supervision and treatment, which cannot be provided in the conditions of the pre-trial detention center. The arrest of Vladyka is a blatant violation of human rights and is aimed at forcibly removing Metropolitan Arseny from fulfilling the obedience of the abbot of the Svyatogorsk Lavra, which is one of the main spiritual centers of Ukraine, and isolating him.
The brethren of the Svyatogorsk Lavra prayerfully support Metropolitan Arseny, await his speedy release from arrest, and consider the accusations against Vladyka artificial and far-fetched. Despite the large-scale destruction of the monastery, with the support of Vladyka Arseny, divine services are held in the Lavra to this day, and the brethren of the monastery continue to carry out their monastic podvig every day. Also, a large number of people who lost their own homes as a result of hostilities live in the Lavra.
Metropolitan Arseny is, as it were, the heart of the Lavra, without him it is impossible to imagine the Svyatogorsk monastery. For all of us living in the Lavra, Vladyka Arseny is an indispensable spiritual mentor, administrator, and man of prayer. Therefore, the isolation of Vladyka is a heavy blow for all of us.
We thank all of you, dear brothers and sisters, for your prayers and words of support for the Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
(1) WHAT MOTIVATED THE ARREST OF THE MOST REVEREND METROPOLITAN ARSENY?
Tumblr media
The checkpoint Vladyka mentioned in that sermon was explicitly set up in the neighboring village to block pilgrims from coming to the celebration of the Synaxis of the Saints of the Svyatogorsk Lavra last fall.  It functioned for only one or two days  - for that particular purpose. Vladyka lamented that people were being prevented from coming to worship at the Lavra and from bringing the monks and refugees badly-needed humanitarian aid. Busloads of people from far away, including families with children, were held up and turned away.

Kazan was once home to a distinct school of iconography, which brought up many talented icon painters. The featured work is a fantastic example of the style typical for the iconographers belonging to the Kazan school. Distinctive dark tones imbue Saint Nicholas icon with solemn seriousness and profound privacy. Unfortunately, the master’s name was long lost to time. The piece is now held in the collection of the Petko Zadgorski Art Gallery of Burgas in Bulgaria.

Reflection on Eid al Adha as Christian ex Muslim
It marks the end of Hajj - an annual pilgrimage which every adult Muslim who is able is encouraged to participate. Additionally, it also commemorates the submission & sacrifice of Abraham our Father. Ishmael was meant to be sacrificed on the altar for God. God was so pleased with Abraham’s submission & sacrifice that instead of Ishmael, God allowed Abraham to use a Lamb for the sacrifice instead. This sacrifice is not for the atonement of sins but rather to show witness, and submission to God. So to commemorate that event, animals are ritually sacrificed & the animals are called “Qurban”. Part of their meat is consumed by the family which offers the animal, while the rest of the meat is distributed to the poor and the needy.
In Christian context
As a Christian from the Church of Egypt, the word we use for communion is also “Qurban”. This is a very interesting similarity which I found after I became Coptic Christian. Additionally, we refer to the Christ as the “Lamb of God”.
He is the unblemished Lamb, that is sacrificed on the Cross for our sake by His own will. His blood atones humanity’s sin. During the communion, we receive His (true) body and blood in form of Bread & Wine to unite ourselves with Him. Christ unites Himself with us, making us one with God.
“For the Son dwells in us in a corporeal sense as Man, commingled and united with us by the mystery of the Eucharist; and also in a spiritual sense as God, by the effectual working and grace of His own Spirit, building up our spirit into newness of life, and making us partakers of His Divine Nature.
.
.
We have, therefore, been made perfect in unity with God the Father, through the mediation of Christ. For by receiving in ourselves, both in a corporeal and spiritual sense, as I said just now, Him that is the Son by Nature, and Who has essential union with the Father, we have been glorified and become partakers in the Nature of the Most High”
May the true Lamb of God, celebrated in our Churches throughout the world everyday be our cause of joy & salvation. There is no need for animal sacrifices because God gave His son for our sake, who took flesh — becoming fully like us except sin.
Amen. One is the Holy Father. One is the Holy Son. One is the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Living a Life in Christ
I have classed myself as an Orthodox Christian for almost two years now. Delving into the Orthodox way of life, I will admit hasn't been easy due to the attitudes of non Christians surrounding me.
Ever since I first stepped into an Orthodox church two years ago I was in awe of the calming blue walls and the intense feeling that it was a place close to God. It really touched my heart, clearing my head of all demons. Admittedly, I knew following this path would be an adjustment from the secular path I was on prior. A huge change and in all honesty I am still struggling with some of the sins that are seen as normal in today society.
So I have decided on documenting my progress in leading a life dedicated to Christ, learning and loving.
sending love and prayers to you all,
Elisabeth

The given antique icon of the Lamentation, also known as “The Entombment of Christ,” dates back to the first half – mid-16th century. It is believed to have been painted in Pskov, a city famous for its Pskov school of iconography, where medieval Russian icons and mural paintings were created between approximately 1175 – 1525. The name of the icon speaks for itself: it is a depiction of the scene of the lamentation over the dead Christ, with Mary stooping the head over the body of her Son.

Salome was misunderstood. She never wanted to kill John the Baptist. She didn't even really know who he was. Salome was a teenage girl back then that was offered to be granted any wish and as kind as she was she went to her mother Herodias, asking if she might have a wish. The mother responded "John the Baptists Head", so that was what Salome said to make her mother proud. She never meant to kill a Saint but to please her mother. Unfortunately her mother was a bad person. I don't think it's fair though to blame his death on Salome. She was literally 14! And she didn't even behead him! Everyone is blaming her. I don't know man, she seemed to try to please her mother, which is relatable as a teenage girl, but the thing is that her mother's wish was so terrible. To say that she's just like her Grandfather Herod the Great, who committed genocide and killed thousands of Innocent is again just an insinuation! This is clearly shown by her turning to Jesus and being one of the 2 female decibels of him next to Mary Magdalena. She matured and turned her back to her family for Jesus (again relatable). Salome's story shows that everyone can be tricked by people you love into doing horrible things & that Jesus forgives you anyway!
(TW: I'm just learning & it might be that those 2 Salomes are two entirely different women but since they lived at approximately the same time I think they could be the same person. I'm not sure though. I also just converted. I used to be atheist, please don't be mad at me. I don't know any better. God bless!)
