Two Hawks’s Name

So. I got curious about what Two Hawks’s name would be in his own language. I mean, I’m curious about what all of Kaya’s contemporaries would be named, but a few weeks ago I got hit with a strong desire to look into Two Hawks’s name specifically while doing research on the Salish nations.

As Two Hawks lives in the general Washington area, he would liikely use the Kalispel or Spokane dialect of his language. In both Kalispel and Spokane, “Esel” means “two,” but it was a bit hard to find a word for “hawk” or “hawks.”

So I ended up on native-languages.org, a non-profit organization site dedicated to the survival of Native languages. They have a specific page in which you can email their experts and request to know a word in exchange for a $10 donation. So I did send them a request, telling them that a character in a book I liked was named “Two Hawks” in the Salish Kalispel-Spokane language and I would like to know what his name would be.

They actually did respond to it, which I’m very excited about! I’m posting the email they sent to me below w/ a transcription under it. (Note: I wasn’t sure if Ms Redish’s email was from the site or personal? So to be safe I blacked it out). The tl;dr is there’s three possibilities for Two Hawks’s name, which is very exciting!

Well, the Salish word for "Two" is "esel," but there are several different words for hawks in Salish. A fish hawk or osprey is c'ixʷc'xʷ. It's very typical of Salish words to be eye-popping tongue-twisters like this, the Salishan languages are considered to be among the most difficult in the world for English speakers to pronounce. The c' is pronounced like the "ts" in "cats" but with a clicking sound, and the "xʷ" sounds a bit like the "hw" sound you might make blowing out a candle. So c'ixʷc'xʷ is pronounced a little like tseets only with extra clicking and guttural blowing sounds. A red-tailed hawk is c'lc'lšmu, which is easier to pronounce, it sounds a little like chull-chull-shmoo only with clicks.

A sparrow hawk or falcon is the easiest to say, Aatat (pronounced ah-tot.) So this character's name could have been something like Esel C'ixʷc'xʷ, Esel C'lc'lšmu, or Esel Aatat.

What do you think is most likely to be Two Hawks’s name? Personally I think Esel C'lc'lšmu is the most likely, as I feel the translated name would have reflected it if he was named after an osprey or falcon, but any of them are possible.

Long considered extinct, pentl'ach has now been declared a living language and added to British Columbia's official list of First Nations languages.  The reclassification of pentl'ach (pronounced "PUNT-lutch") was the result of both linguistic and administrative work by the Qualicum First Nation on Vancouver Island's east coast, with support from the First Peoples' Cultural Council.  The Coast Salish language had been considered extinct because the last well known fluent speaker died in the 1940s.  But Mathew Andreatta, a Qualicum member and researcher with the pentl'ach revitalization project, said the language was never truly gone.  Andreatta called the reclassification "an affirmation of something that we've always known and that we've always felt." He said the move is important because it is healing for his people, but also because it opens more doors to continue revitalizing the language.

One of the things I really like when I was on the flathead reservation is all official signs are dual language- english and salish. It is a great first step in reclaiming and bringing back a language that is endangered. All towns, creeks, rivers, lakes, mountains, etc were labeled in both english and salish. Interpretive signage was side by side english and salish. it was just really cool and made my heart happy. I’d love to see the same thing in other places.

Which legendary Cryptids are appropriated from Indigenous Alaskan/American/Canadian/ cultures?

Honestly, most of them.

Wend!g0: appropriated from Algonquian cultures. The word itself (at least this version that I've censored) is Ojibwe & is an evil cannibal spirit

Sk*nwalkers: Navajo. Evil medicine men

Ravenmockers: Cherokee, called the Kâ'lanû Ahkyeli'skï in the Native language

Deer Woman: various cultures, including Ojibwe, Cherokee, Seminole, Oceti Sakowin, Haudenosaunee, & more.

Bigfoot/Sasquatch/various other giant hairy humanoids: various cultures, especially the Pacific Northwest. My culture also has them, & they're called Mistapew in our language. The word & "cryptid" Sasquatch is a bastardization of the word (& spirit) se'sxa from a Salish language (might be Nlaka'pamuctsin).

Lake Eerie Monster/Ogopogo/various other lake monsters: based on Algonquian horned serpent spirit & other similar spirits. Ogopogo in particular was stolen from the Secwepemc spirit Naitaka & the Sylix spirit nx̌ax̌aitkʷ

Thunderbirds: frequently found in many cultures, but most popular in Pacific Northwest Coast cultures, as evident in their art. Also found in some Algonquian cultures, including mine, & my Cree name has this word in it. This one was just straight up stolen & had a "cryptid" label slapped onto it

Caddy/Cadborosaurus: found in various PNWC cultures, called the hiyitl'iik by the Manhousat people, t'chain-ko by the Sechelt, & numkse lee kwala by the Comox in Vancouver.

Skunk Ape: bastardization of the Seminole Esti Capcaki, fitting the same description.

Shunka Warak’in: based on the name, it sounds like it was stolen from Oceti Sakowin legends, since "Shunka" (šúŋka) means "dog", particularly in Lakota

Adlet: stolen from Inuit legends

Thetis Lake Monster/Canadian Lizard Man: very likely based on & stolen from Haida Gwaii legends

Michigan Dogman: might be a mixture of Odawa legends as well as overlap with wend!g0

Owyhee Mountain Dwarves: stolen from Shoshone and Bannock legends

Nain Rouge: bastardization mix between French folklore called the lutin, and Native legends local to the area

Wampus Cat/Wampus: appears in multiple cultures, including Cherokee.

La Llorona: this one may have been influenced by a "weeping woman" figure that is seen in a few central american cultures, like Cihuacōātl, who has a really similar story with her son Mixcoatl.

Piasa Bird: spirit from Mississippian culture, often depicted in murals and art, including at Cahokia

Pukwudgie: from Wampanoag legends, & is a Wampanoag word. I think similar spirits exist elsewhere

A cryptid is an animal or creature that may or may not biologically exist but has a lot of tall tales surrounding it, and so people into "cryptids" (specifically ones that are appropriated) will use Native legends to fuel their argument & use as "proof" that these "animals" exist/existed, rather than the other way around that these are actually Native spirits that White people got a hold of, decontextualized, bastardized, and then spread inaccurately as "cryptids" or simply "folklore", with the latter being correct. Or people who think that these are just fun stories think "here's a cryptid and oh hey here's a Native spirit fitting the exact same description and the area the cryptid originates from is in the traditional territory as the Native culture this Native spirit is from. It's just a coincidence." & don't think it's because of appropriation at all.

I'm very likely missing some so there's probably more, but I also wouldn't be surprised if multiple OTHER "cryptids" have their origins in Native spirits that we haven't investigated yet. I've also been seeing White people talk about "cryptids" and then just straight up listing Native spirits, even ones that aren't widely known and don't even have a history of being called "cryptids". Which is fucking racist.

Native spirits aren't cryptids.

This week feels like it has been a hundred years long (not in a bad way). 

Somehow we joined together to balance the seesaw just right so Ava Gardner and Jean Seberg could both go through in the Hot Vintage Lady polls (percentages rounded). Like, I’m wearing the Ava jersey and even I encouraged people to vote Jean when necessary. Honestly, I just wanted to see if it could be done. And it COULD. 

Round three has begun. It is already horrific. This is the first round that’s really going to hurt because we spent the last one really getting down in the dirt and championing our ladies, or learning about actresses we’d never heard of before and getting attached to them. And now? We are reminded: memento mori. Everyone loses but one. 

(I personally pitched in for Sara Montiel. “BUT JUST LOOK AT--” Yeah, I did, thanks.)

I spent a lot of my childhood growing up on the rez. And at home, we spoke some Salish in our day-to-day dealings. Not much, just a word or phrase here and there (that I've mostly forgotten).

One of those phrases was "Q'lal'ŝ", which just means "suppertime", or something similar. And it was how my family would call everybody to the table for a meal. Mom would say "go get your siblings for supper" and so we would just holler "q'lal'ŝ!!" down the hallway.

But as a kid, I didn't know that we were speaking Salish, a dead language that nobody really speaks anymore. I just thought that was a normal regular American thing to do. And so like, even when staying at a friend's house, that's how I would call them to supper.

Nobody pointed it out to me until middle school, when my friend Tyler's mom very politely asked me "what the HELL did you just say?", and I found out that, no, in fact. The average American does not sprinkle phrases in upper Salishan dialects into their day-to-day vernacular.

I'm going to stay with my friend for the summer in Boston.We are long distance friends I'm so excited to meet.I arrived at the airport in Boston nervous finally I spot my friend Millie and run to hug her but I noticed a handful of other girls so I asked who they were and Millie said “oh that's Salish,Zoe, and Kiara”my other friends staying with us she explained that those were girls she went to school with ‘great they know each other and I only know Millie I'm gonna be the odd one out’ i thought I pull out my hand to shakes theirs and we introduced ourselves and got to know each other a bit on the way to Millie’s House.Once we got there I unpacked my stuff in the guest bedroom and met up with them in the living room.We all decided we wanted to make cookies so we pulled up a recipe and started gathering ingredients once we got everything ready we preheated the oven and started making the dough then we put them in the oven and started talking about random things and laughing after Zoe said something stupid.Soon the oven beeped and we pulled out the cookies and let them cool then we made popcorn and started a movie night around 1am I passed out.the next morning I woke up and the couch next to Kiara but everyone else was gone.We looked around and finally we texted asking were they were.They said out getting breakfast and the would be back in 10 minutes.When they got back we decided to go out to do something.Once we reached the mall we got out and went inside.Kiara and Zoe went to bath and body works,Salish and Millie went to a clothes store while I went to find food cause I was hungry.This mall is weird but I finally found the food court,and as i was walking by a table a guy pushed his chair into me on accident.He apologized and said “I'm so sorry I didn't see you”I explained it was okay it was just an accident I noticed his brother staring but just ignored him,and went to go get my food.On my way back to the table area they noticed I was alone and they walked up and asked were I was from cause they hadn't seen me before I explained I'm from (y/s) and was staying here for the summer with my friends finally the introduced themselves and the one that hit me with the chair was Justin and the others name was matt.I said my name was y/n and it was nice to meet them.They sat down and we started talking and matt explained he was a triplet which I thought was cool.once we got to know each other a bit we kinda hung out at the mall and finally I found a couple of my original friends I came with and before I left to go with them matt asked for my number.

Pronounced “STEH-chas,” meaning “Place of the Black Bear” in Lushootseed, referencing the area that in English is titled Budd Inlet near Olympia, where the Salish Sea begins.

“Before colonial settlers came to our territories, all the places that have English names had names in Lushootseed. These paintings highlight the importance of remembering what those names were. The names that my ancestors gave to these places were often descriptions of the natural characteristics of the land. “bastiqiyu” translates to “it has wolves” meaning that you were likely to encounter a wolf at or near that place. “txsIaR ” translates into “Place of the Raven.” It is important to remember these characteristics my ancestors identified and to remember the language that my ancestors spoke.

In this time that governments and institutions are saying “land acknowledgments” before meeting and gatherings, it is very important that we not only acknowledge the land, but we acknowledge the language that my ancestors spoke and the individual characteristics of the land that they lived on.”
