Want You Bad ~ S.S. (part 3)
A/n: I made a playlist to try and get myself to write less and still managed to write a part three in the same day as part one and two. So. Screw my mind and it’s hyperfixated state! Side note: the mashup I mentioned is based off of this (which is also on the playlist above!)

Warnings: literally call myself out for doing enemies to lovers. Good luck with that. Actually just gays being gays in this, no drama. I decided it was time for reader to fall in love with Sebastian because Valentine’s Day and also the SHIT about to hit the fan is so much more fun with reader being in love with Seb haha <3

Sebastian tried a few times to make Y/n change his mind and get them back into their fiery, flirty groove, but it was plenty over. Y/n gave him a solid cold shoulder and eventually Sebastian seemed to lose interest. Everyone did seem surprised when Y/n didn’t transfer back, or leave the Warblers, but it did offer a lot of opportunities for the other Warblers to become better friends with Y/n now that he seemed to be serious about the group, even through shady stuff like slushies with an unappreciated little kick. 
Ethan and Y/n began to get closer. For the first time in years, Y/n finally felt like he actually had a best friend and it was kind of nice. Every time Y/n was having a hard time, he went to Ethan, and vice versa. Suddenly his high school experience was skyrocketing, and even if he and Sebastian weren’t talking, they still functioned just fine to be in the Warblers together. Everything was working out just fine.
In fact, after the show off with Santata, when New Directions encouraged them to drop by the school for something important, it was easy to convince the others to go with just a little pushing from Y/n. Sebastian rolled his eyes, but most of the others were for it and team captain or not, Sebastian couldn’t stop them from going. So they went, with a few jabs about Sebastian maybe being a coward and that’s why he didn’t want to show up blah blah blah.
It was nice to see everyone perform again, and when Ethan of all people jumped up to join them and they let him, Y/n was only too eager to be number two. Then the tape came out, and the rock salt, and Y/n felt his resolve harden about giving up on Sebastian.
Sebastian, however, seemed to not like that he had almost completely lost the way he could affect Y/n, and had suddenly decided that he cared again.
Things hit a high when February started and Valentine’s Day began to crawl closer and closer. Sebastian kicked everything off by showing up to their first class of the day together and sitting right by Y/n. “Hey there Sweetheart, missed me?”
“Like I miss having chickenpox when I was eight,” Y/n sassed immediately.
For some reason that only made Sebastian smile wider. “Cute. You free Valentine’s Day?”
“Not for you, not even in your dreams.” At Y/n’s response Sebastian moved closer and Y/n immediately scooted his entire seat further away. “I don’t know what you’re trying to pull Sebastian, but I’m not going to let it fly. You hurt Blaine. You planned something like that against my friends behind my back, with everyone in the Warblers except me.”
Sebastian scoffed. “Oh come on Y/n, it was a joke. You can play enemies now, but I saw the way you looked at me when we sang together for the first time. I know that it’s going to change the way you listen to ‘Cooler Than You’ forever and-”
“Did it change the way you listen to that song?” The question stopped Sebastian dead in his tracks. Y/n rolled his eyes. “You’re not some sex god, Sebastian. You’re cute, I’ll give you that. You’re confident and you have power and swagger - and good for you, honestly. I don’t care. It doesn’t matter. You can have as pretty of a face as you want, your insides are ugly.” Y/n gathered his stuff. “And for your information, it wasn’t a joke to me. You hurt someone I care about, and until you can swallow your goddamn pride and accept that and at least say sorry about it, then don’t even think about trying to be friends with me let alone taking any of my Valentine’s Days.” And with that he left.
It was odd, but Y/n couldn’t help but notice how many eyes were on him as he changed seats, moving as far away from Sebastian as possible. Class started before he could think too much about it so he just pushed it all out of his mind. Sebastian Smythe had taken enough of his time.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t just that class. Sebastian spent the entire beginning of February trying to woo Y/n and convince him to be Sebastian’s Valentine’s date. Nothing romantic, just a lot of flirting and being overly suggestive, but it was still weird. Especially with how it was making things awkward for everyone in the Warblers, and how more and more nasty Y/n’s replies were getting. He was starting to sound like Satana - it was getting ugly. It was weird as well that around all of that, all it seemed to do in the long run was get more and more people to notice Y/n and Sebastian’s heated interactions. People started asking to show up to rehearsals to see it there too, and people had come up asking about the next performances. Even the people who hated show choir or didn’t have any interest in anything like it were suddenly interested… and it was then that Y/n realized what was going on.
“Please for the love of every song I’ve ever and will ever sing, stop pissing me off with fake flirting just so people will pay more attention to the Warblers and we’ll have more support.” Sebastian seemed surprised, but he didn’t argue so Y/n knew he had it right. “I get it, and I want more people at school caring about what we do too. I love it… usually. But I hate this. I don’t like my feelings being messed with for attention, and I don’t want people to care about what I love only because they want to see me squirm. It’s like some form of bullying, or it feels like it is - whatever. Just, Warbler to Warbler, please stop.”
Sebastian’s smile never stopped. “You know, more popular than friends to lovers is enemies to lovers. The idea that the bad boy can be changed by love, or the people with all that tension and hate who are seconds away from either fighting or kissing - it does something to people. And you know what Y/n you can smack talk me all you want, but I know that coming here wasn’t just about being a Warbler, and I know what went on in your head that first while before the parking lot. I saw the way you looked at me even before you got brave and lowkey challenged me to a face off during rehearsal, okay? I KNOW you’re into me, and neither of us have a date for the fourteenth, so why not? Why not just for once give into that carnal desire. It’ll only take a night and then… however long after that you want it to take.” His lips curved into a smirk that made Y/n want to punch him.
The thing was, Y/n was too busy feeling sick to his stomach. “I’m sorry, did you think this entire time that the only reason I’m into you is because I want to have sex with you?”
“Now is that into me, currently?” Sebastian purred.
Y/n’s face dropped, and his hands curled into fists at his side. “Listen here asshole, I- I don’t sleep around like you do okay? I don’t date often, and even then I don’t have sex a lot when I DO date. No, I’m not a fucking virgin before you ask, but let me tell you that when I thought about you, only a very few of those thoughts were about how you were in bed. Only a small part of me was drawn to you because you’re incredibly hot. I wanted more than that. I saw all these really sweet things between us, and then you have systematically derailed and destroyed every single one. I don’t have a single lick of fondness for you anymore, and that’s more important to me than anything. I don’t care how great of a lay you are. I’m not that kind of person. So jot that down, and do yourself a favor - Do not forget it. Now let’s get to rehearsal, I’m sure they’re waiting for us” He turned away, running a hand through his hair.
He tried not to think about the weird change in Sebastian that had happened when Y/n had admitted that he didn’t just want sex. There had been something along the lines of shock, like he couldn’t believe someone wanted that with him. Like maybe he’d never had someone want that from him. But Y/n didn’t think about that, because that would lead him to care about Sebastian and that couldn’t happen anymore.
During rehearsal Sebastian was weird, though. Quieter. More reserved. He still seemed solid and confident and sexy, but Y/n was getting good at noticing the difference between when Sebastian was genuinely being that way, and when he was putting on an act to seem like he was. One thing was for sure: Sebastian stopped flirting to start mini fights with Y/n, and that at least was appreciated.
The day before Valentine’s Day was the next time Sebastian talked to Y/n personally and directly, rather than a general talking to everyone, or sending a message via one of the other Warblers. He had a nice, blue sweater on and some light brown slacks. He looked really good. Y/n tried not to think about that fact. “What do you want, Smythe?” For the first time in quite a while, Y/n’s words weren’t poisoned or sharp. Just tired.
Sebastian took a quiet breath in through his nose. He wasn’t smiling. He seemed relaxed, like he was trying to seem upbeat and detached but couldn’t quite pull it off today. “We were asking last minute to perform at a Valentine’s Day dance tomorrow,” Sebastian began explaining. “When something like this comes up we usually skip the school day and make the whole planning process a little faster so we’ll be properly prepared. We spend the entire day together. I was going to tell you last night when I realized I didn’t have your number, so I’m telling you now. Any classes you’re worried about?”
Y/n shook his head. “No, I’m perfectly fine. We’re heading there now I’m assuming?”
“Yes,” Sebastian confirmed. Y/n began moving before the other boy could say anything else, so Sebastian was left jogging after to catch up. Not something that was hard for him with his long legs. “Y/n, I- listen, the boys already had some ideas that they got attached to. I had to come find you and I told them to go ahead while I tracked you down. They’re kind of already planning on doing Closer. By the Chainsmokers.” Y/n stopped midstep, and Sebastian swiveled a few steps ahead, caught off guard again. It left them face to face, rather than side to side like before. Sebastian seemed almost regretful to add, “And they want us to lead.” Enunciation on ‘almost’.
For a second, Y/n just looked at Sebastian, trying to read him. “What’s the game? Hm?”
Sebastian rolled his eyes. “I think they’re playing matchmaker, I don’t know. After you basically confessed you want to date me or whatever a while ago they’ve been weirdly pushy for us to perform something together, and this is just the opportunity for us to realize we’re in love, right?” His tone was sarcastic, which was perfectly distracting from the words.
“As if. If I ever did have actual feelings for you past a stupid infatuative crush, I definitely don’t and I won’t ever, so-” Y/n began.
“I’ve never actually dated anyone and that isn’t changing for you okay, so I get the sentiment. As it stands, we’re not each others' biggest fans-”
“Understatement,” Y/n grumbled.
“But we’re still in this whole thing together, and I think feelings aside, we do kick ass singing together,” Sebastian continued as if Y/n’s hadn’t interrupted. “I was serious when I said you had talent and that I wanted you to use it in the Warblers. What do you say?”
In favor of not thinking too much about the compliment Sebastian had just given, Y/n settled on, “We’re not singing ‘Closer’.”
Sebastian made puppy dog eyes. “What if it’s in a mashup?”
Y/n hated with a burning passion that it made him smile. “I’m assuming you already have an idea?”
“A few,” Sebastian confirmed. He looked kind of adorable, and it was infuriating.
“Fine,” Y/n grumbled, beginning to walk again. “Stop making that face you look stupid.” He tried to let the quip land, but Sebastian cut off any chance he had to check by grabbing his arm and fully running to the Warbler room, forcing Y/n to run as well. Taken off guard, Y/n burst into laughter. By the time they slowed to a stop, Sebastian’s hold had slipped so they were holding hands, and they were both grinning, red faced, and out of breath. “What the hell, Smythe?” Y/n giggled out, completely missing the boys in front of them, or their intertwined fingers.
“Made you laugh,” Sebastian pointed out, in the same voice one would say made you look. 
“You’re ridiculous,” Y/n decided. “And bipolar.”
That made Sebastian laugh. “Perhaps you just bring out the best in me.”
“What and you bring out the worst of me?” Y/n sassed, raising an eyebrow. “A fair trade.”
It was Sebastian’s turn to be sassy. “The worst? I haven’t seen you properly sing until you joined the Warblers, and I didn’t know you before Kurt and Blaine but from what I’ve heard, you haven’t stood up for yourself since, let alone doing what you want and having fun. I’ll absolutely admit that I’m a pain in the ass, but you had to admit that your life has been better since I’ve come around.”
Y/n hated himself for realizing Sebastian was right. He looked away and saw the other boys watching the exchange with wide, interested eyes. Y/n cleared his throat. He was getting real tired of being watched by a bunch of people who all fed on drama. “You said something about ideas for a mashup up?”
Unphased by the change in Y/n’s tone, or the others watching them, Sebastian smiled wider. “I have a few.”

They had practiced this song a million times in the last day. So many times that they’d barely had time to get a proper rest before they all woke up the next day and jumped right back into it again. They did go to school that day, everyone going on vocal rest so they didn’t tire themselves out and fail at the performance. When it came to time for the performance, they were all confident they’d more than pull through. Warm ups were through and the lights were going up and Y/n thought he knew exactly what to expect.
Sebastian had been very respectful of the boundaries Y/n had set. He’d made Sebastian promise he wouldn’t flirt during rehearsals. They needed to focus, to prepare. No distractions. Sebastian had eagerly agreed, and kept to it the entire time.
Y/n should have known that would change the night of the performance. Y/n had gotten no promise for being in front of an audience, and what kind of performance didn’t have a little theatre to it, bringing the songs to life? They were singing two love songs; Sebastian wouldn’t have not used it as an opportunity to flirt with Y/n if his life depended on it, and Y/n should have seen that coming. He did, in a way, but not enough. Especially when he was completely thrown off by seeing they were performing in a rather public place, in front of people other than just those at the school. A group of people who apparently included Y/n’s friends from his other school.
He was about to have a meltdown when the music started, and he had to force himself to focus. He would have time at least, since even as the notes to “Closer” picked up, Sebastian was first to sing, and his voice carried out the beginning lines of “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran.
“The club isn’t the best place to find a lover so the bar is where I go. Me and my friends at the table doing shots, drinking fast and then we talk slow.”
Y/n cut in. “Hey, tell your friends it was nice to meet them, but I hope I never see them again.”
Sebastian came back with Ed Sheeran. “Listen I’m singing like, girl you know I want your love, your love was handmade for somebody like me. Come on now follow my lead - I may be crazy, don’t mind me.” As he sang, passing Y/n, his eyes focused on the boy, his words directed at him. It shouldn’t have, but seeing Sebastian look at him and call him ‘girl’ hit a sour chord with Y/n. For a split second he was terrified that Sebastian somehow knew that Y/n was trans. “Say boy, let’s not talk too much. Grab on my waist and put that body on me. Come on now follow my lead, come on now follow my lead.”
Along with him, as he sang those last lines, Y/n softly followed with, “And I can’t stop. No I can’t stop.” He quieted when Sebastian continued next.
“I’m in love with the shape of you, we push and pull like a magnet do. And though my heart is falling too, I’m in love with your body.” Sebastian winked and Y/n was shocked to realize whatever part of it that was soft for the other boy, the part he thought was long gone, was still very much alive and beating. “Last night you were in my room, and now my bedsheets smell like you. Everything is coloring; something brand new. I’m in love with your body.” The chorus hit and the boys behind them vocalized with the band, but all Y/n could see was Sebastian as they danced, snaking around each other and between the other boys. Never far enough to let Y/n catch his breath.
As they harmonized, Y/n thanked everything that he remembered to come in with, “We ain’t ever getting older.”
“I’m in love with your body,” Sebastian sang.
“We ain’t ever getting older,” Y/n followed dutifully. His head swam with images of them wrapped in sheets, smiling at each other. Images of shared kisses and wandering hands. Fingers that traced skin…
“Discovering something brand new: I’m in love with your body.” Sebastian shamelessly checked Y/n out and everything else went dark. Far away and meaningless. All that mattered were those thoughts and feelings Y/n had dearly missed. What he’d kept buried now flowed out of him and it felt amazing. When the chorus stopped, they ended facing each other as Sebastian continued, “When we came we let the story begin, we’re going out on our first date. You and me at Thrifties, so go all you can eat. Fill up your bag and I’ll fill up a plate.”
Y/n turned away to continue the choreography, his head swimming as he managed, “Stay. Play that Blink-182 song that we beat to death in Tousan, okay?”
“And saying like, girl you know I want your love, your love was handmade for somebody like me. Come on now follow my lead, I may be crazy don’t mind me. Say boy, let’s not talk too much - grab on my waist and put that body on me. Come on now follow me, come on now follow my lead.”
As Sebastian did that, Y/n sang under him once again, but this time, it was, “I can’t stop. No, I can’t stop.”
Sebastian caught Y/n’s waist, breaking the choreo a moment to pull them closer several seconds too early. They were supposed to cross past each other, but now they just stood locked, eyes meeting and bodies pressed together. “I’m in love with the shape of you. We push and pull like a magnet do. And though my heart is falling too - I’m in love with your body. Last night you were in my room, and now my bedsheets smell like you. Everything is coloring; something brand new. I’m in love with your body.”
The vocalizing picked up again and Y/n remembered to sing, “We ain’t ever getting older, no!”
Vocalizing again, but this time it was Sebastian who picked up, “I’m in love with your body.”
Then it was Y/n’s turn again. “We ain’t ever getting older.”
Only for Sebastian to immediately pick up, “Everything is coloring; something brand new. I’m in love with your body.” The music softened and Sebastian finally let Y/n go and it was up to improvising to get back into the places they were supposed to be because they were late. But they pulled it off. Of course. Because they were Warblers. “Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on.”
Their voices merged again as Y/n sang, “We ain’t ever getting older,”  and Sebastian continued with, “I’m in love with the shape of you. We push and pull like a magnet do, and though my heart is falling too - I’m in love with your body. Last night you were in my room, now my bedsheets smell like you. Everything coloring something new: I’m in love with your body.” The music swelled and the two songs’ chorus melted into one chorus.
It all ended with Sebastian and Y/n circling each other as Sebastian softly sang, “Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on. Come on be my baby, come on. Come on by my baby, come on.” And Y/n felt his stomach turn as he realized that Sebastian was pointedly talking to him.
Sebastian Smythe was asking Y/n out, and Y/n had absolutely no idea if he meant it genuinely or just for the audience’s benefit.
To ground himself, Y/n looked back at his old friends. Even Rachel’s withering glare would be appreciated right now. But they were gone. Y/n wondered when they’d left. If they’d left because of what had just happened between Sebastian and him… but of course that was why he’d done it, hadn’t he? And of course then his mind chose to remind him of Blaine, and how he had not been in the group, which meant he was still in the hospital, because he would have never left Kurt alone on Valentine’s Day without him.
The self hate that swallowed him whole was vicious, and he barely made it off the stage and out of view of the audience before he beelined it for his stuff and dipped out, heading to his car without a single word to any of the others.
Y/n half expected Sebastian to follow him.
He didn’t.

Barry immediately scoped Sebastian up and ran him to the hospital. Then he contacted Kurt and after half an hour Kurt came running in with Santana and the others right behind him. Kurt's frightened expression broke his heart.
" I don't know anything yet he's in the operating room right now, he was...in pretty bad shape when I found him."
Barry didn't want to say too much to Kurt right now even if he knew from the state of Sebastian that he's been most likely raped.
They waited for what felt like ages before the doctor came out and asked for family of Sebastian Smythe. Barry took advantage of their looks and said he was Sebastian's twin brother which was the best option how to learn something about Sebastian's condition.
" He's stabilized but still unconscious. He had several broken bones, ribs and a concussion. It was pure luck that you brought him here when you did because if it had been later, he might have not survived."
The doctor paused and took a deep breath. Barry knew what was coming.
" He also has been brutally raped. We will do some tests to see the extent of damage. I'm so sorry."
As the doctor left Barry turned to the others. Santata had a very dangerous look in her eyes, Nick and Jeff were holding each other and Kurt he was staring into space lost in his head.
The moment he heard the word rape Kurt blacked out. Memories took him to the night at scandals years ago. How Blaine tried to rape him in the parking lot and almost succeeded. He thought back to that terrible feeling he had right before Sebastian walked out of the bar. Why didn't he stopped him? He let him go alone, he let this happen to him.
" It's my fault... it's all my fault. If I didn't let him go alone if I..."
" No Kurt listen to me and listen well this is not your fault. You couldn't have known. This is fault of whoever did this, not your's. Just like loosing the role of Tony wasn't your fault, or the showcase, or Blaine's cheating. None of those things were your fault."
Kurt knew Santana was right and as he listened to her he was getting angrier and angrier at Blaine because he had almost no doubt it was him who did this. Just to get back at Sebastian for defending Kurt and wise versa. Kurt came back to reality when he felt someone hug him. It was Barry.
" I'm sorry Kurt."
" I'm just glad that you found him and got him to hospital so fast. You saved his life thank you."
" Anytime."
When they finally let them see Sebastian Kurt hasitated for a second. He got ready for the worst but what he saw when he walked to Sebastian's room was way worse than he anticipated. Sebastian's left hand was in casket and he had a lots of bruises on his face and Kurt knew they weren't just on his face. He was sure Sebastian is going have scars and not just a few. He looked so innocent and vulnerable. Kurt had tear's streaming down his face. But the worst part weren't even the physical scar's. No it was the mental ones that scared Kurt the most. How Sebastian is going to cope. He heard the door open and Santana walked in with Barry.
" It was Blaine I'm sure of it. I'm going to do everything I can to make sure he's not going get away with this. Not this time."
" What do you mean?"
Kurt told them about what happened at scandals and when he did he was surprised that Sebastian didn't wake up to Santana's yelling in Spanish. Barry was silent but inside he was plotting Revenge. Prison was too nice for Anderson, he had to figure out something way worse.
Kurt stayed with Sebastian even after the nurse told him that visiting hours ended but Barry convinced her to let them stay. So they did. At some point Kurt fell asleep on Barry's shoulder and Barry was about to fall asleep too when suddenly the bepining of the heart rate monitor stopped and turned into one consistent sound that woke both of them up. That meant one thing. Sebastian was going into cardiac arrest.
Doctors were there in seconds and started resuscitation. Barry quickly pulled Kurt out of there and embraced him in a tight hug.
" It's going to be ok Kurt, he'll be fine. He's strong, he'll be fine."
He had to say this to try and calm Kurt down a bit even if he wasn't so sure of his words himself....

CHARAK SAMHITA 3 Adhyaya Jvara Chikitsa.
Jwaro vikaro rogascha vyadhiratanka eva cha.
           Ekoartho namaparyayeivividhairabhidhiyate. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/11)
Jwara is known by various synonyms such as vikara, roga, vyadhi and atanka.
Tasya prakrutirudhhistha doshah sharirmanasah.
Dehinam na hi nirdosham jwarah samupasevate.( charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/12)
The sources of origin of fever are the (deranged) doshas of body and mind because fever does not arise in the person devoid of the same.
Kshayastamo jvarah papma mrutyuschokta yamatmakah.
           Panchatvapratyayannrunam klishyatam svena karmanah. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/13)
Ityasya prakrutihi prokta,
Again, by nature fever is related to the god of death and is known as kshaya (wasting), tamas (causing loss of consciousness), papma(sinful) and mrutyu (causing death) because it leads the person suffering from their own deeds to fiveness (death when only five mahabhutas remain bereft of the consciousness). Thus, is said to the prakruti.

Initial appearance of fever is due to the parigraha (receiving) and rudras wrath.

           Krodhagniraktavan devamaham ki karavani te. (24)
Taptuvacheshwarah krodham jwaro loke bhavishyasi.

In the second age (treta yuga) when Lord Shiva was observing the vow of wrathlessness (penace), the demons living on obstacles to penance, created mischief for thousand divine years in order to put obstacles to penance of the great soul. Daksha Prajapati though capable ignored even seeing all this. Moreover, he did not give due place to the offerings to Lord Shiva in the sacrifice inspite of having been advised by the gods to do so. Thus he made the sacrifice devoid of the mantras relating to the Lord of animals and offerings pertaining to Lord Shiva which were necessary for the success of the sacrifice. When after completion of the vow, the god Rudra came to know the lackings of Daksha, he, the knower of self, came into the wrathful state and by by creating a (third) eye in his forehead the potent one, reduced all these demons to ashes and created a boy, heated with the fire of anger, who could destroy the celebrations of the sacrifice. After this the sacrifice was destroyed, the gods were pained and the living beings afflicted with heat and pain were moving here and there in all directions. Then the congregation of gods along with the seven sages praised the omnipresent Lord with incantations till Lord Shiva returned to his normal benevolent state. Knowing that he is now in the benevolent mood the fire of wrath, which due to fear holds the weapon of ashes, possesses three heads, nine eyes, is disturbed with burning flames, fierce and gradually has short legs and belly, submitted to the Lord with folded hands – Now, sir! what should I do for you? The Lord replied to him- ‘You will be with fever in the world during the birth and death and also in conditions of unwholesomeness.

Prakrutischa pravruttischa prabhavascha pradarshitah.
Effects of fever are pyrexia, anorexia, thirst, bodyache and distress in cardiac region. It is the great darkness during birth and death. Thus original source, initiation and effect are said.
Nidane karananyashtau purvoktani vibhagshah. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/27)
The eight causes of fever are already been said in nidan sthana.

Prodromal symptoms of fever are lassitude, congested eyes, yawning, heaviness, exhaustion, unstable desire and aversion to fire, sun, air and water, indigestion, distaste in mouth, loss of strength and complexion and slight derangement in behavior.
Kevalam samanaskam cha jvaradhisthanam uchyate.
Shariram, balakalastu nidane sampradarshitah. (30)
The location of fever is the entire body along with the mind. The time of exacerbation is said in nidan sthana.
Jvarapratyatmikam lingam santapo dehamanasah.
           Jvarenavishata bhutam na hi kichinna tapyate. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/31)
The specific character of fever is excessive heat in the body as well as mind because there is nobody who is not heated by the rising fever.
Dwividho vidhibhedena jvarah shariramanasah.
           Punascha dwividho drushtah saumyaschagneya eva cha. (32)
Antarvego bahirvego dwividhah punaruchyate.
           Prakruto vaikrutaschaiva sadhyaschasadhya eva cha. (33)
Punah panchvidho drushto doshakalabalabalat.
           Santatah satatoanyetrutiyakachaturthakau. (34)
Punarashrayabhedena dhatunam saptadha matah.
           Bhinnah karanabhedena punarashtavidho jvarah. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/35)
As regards classification, fever is of two types- somatic and psychic. Again it is of two types- saumya and agneya. It is again of two types- internal and external, natural and unnatural, curable and incurable. Again it is of five types according to strength and weakness of the timing of dosha such as santata, satata, anyedushka, tritiyaka and chaturthaka. Again, according to location in dhatus, it is of seven types. According to etiology, it is of eight types.
Sharire jayate purve dehe, manasi manasah.
           Vaichityamaratiraglanirmanasastapalakshanam. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/36)
Indriyanam cha vaikrutyam dehasantapalakshanam.
(Though fever is, by nature,psychosomatic), the somatic fever first arises in the body while the psychic fever starts with mind. Mental detraction, restlessness and malaise are the symptoms of psychic heat, pyrexia also causes abnormality in senses.
Vatapittatmakah shitamushnam vatakaphatmakah. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/37)
Ichhatyubhayametattu jvaro vyamishralakshanam.
Fever predominant in vata and pitta creates desire for cold while that in vata and kapha for hot and for both when it is having combined symptoms.
Yogvaha param vayuhu sanyogadubhayarthakruta. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/38)
           Dahakrutatejasa yuktah shitakruta somasanshrayat.
Vayu is a good synergist which exerts both types of action on combination, such as when combined with agni it produces heat but in conjunction with soma it produces cold.
Antardahoadhikastrushna pralapah shwasanam bhramah. (39)
Sandhi asthi shulamaswedo doshavarchavinigrahah.
Antarvegasya lingani jvarasyeitani lakshayet. (40)
Santapoabhyadhiko bahyastrushnadinam cha mardavam.
Bahirvegasya lingani sukhasadhyatvameva cha. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/41)
More internal heat, thirst, delirium, increased respiration, giddiness, pain in joints and bones, lack of perspiration, obstruction in doshas and faeces- these are the symptoms of internal fever. Excessive external heat, mildness of thirst etc. along with easy curability- these are the symptoms of external fever.
Prakrutah sukhsadhyastu vasantsharadudbhavah.
           Ushnamushnena sanvrudham pittam sharadam kupyati. (42)
Chitah shite kaphaschaivam vasante samudiryate.
           Varshasvamlavipakabhiradbhiroshadhibhistatha. (43)
Sanchitam pittamudriktam sharadityatejasa.
           Jvaram sanjanayatyashu tasya chanubalah kaphah. (44)
Prakrutyeiva visargasya tatra nanashanadbhayam.
           Adbhiroshadhischaiva madhurabhichitah kaphah. (45)
Hemante, suryasantaptam sa vasante prakupyati.
           Vasante shleshmana tasmajjvarah samupajayate. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/46)
Adanmadhye tasyapi vatapittam bhavedanu.
The natural fever arisen in the reasons of spring and autumn is easily curable. Pitta, being hot itself, gets aggravated further by hot and is thus vitiated in the autumn. Likewise, kapha accumulated in the cold gets aggravated in the spring. In the rainy season, pitta is accumulated due to water and plants having amlavipaka and the same being vitiated due to heat of the autumn gives rise to fever quickly. Here kapha associates as a subsidiary factor. In such condition, there is no harm by fasting because of the nature of visarga. On the other hand, kapha is accumulated due to sweet water and plants during hemanta and gets vitiated in spring due to heat of the sun. Hence the person suffers from fever due to kapha in spring in the middle of the adana period. Here vata and pitta are associated as subsidiary factors.
Adavante cha madhye cha budhhva doshabalabalam.
           Sharadvasantyorvidvanjvarasya pratikarayeta. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/47)
The wise physician should treat the case of fever in autumn and spring by considering strength and weakness of doshas in the beginning, the end and the middle.
Kalaprakrutimuddishya nirdishtah prakruto jvarah. (48)
           Prayenanilajo dukhah kaleshvanyeshu vaikrutah.
Hetavo vividhastasya nidane sampradarshitah. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/49)
           Balavatswalpadosheshu jvarah sadhyoanupadravah.
The fever is termed as prakruta on the basis of prakruti of time but the vatika fever even a praakruta one is often troublesome. The fever arisen in seasons other than that responsible for vitiation of the concerned dosha is known as vaikruta which is troublesome. Its various causes have been mentioned in nidana sthana.
Hetubhirbahubhirjato balibhirbahulakshanah. (charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/50)
           Jvarah pranantakrudyascha shighramindriyanashanah.
Fever is curable if it is free from complications and is in persons having much strength and a little morbidity.
The fever is fatal if it is caused by numerous and potent etiological factors, has numerous symptoms and destroys the senses quickly.

Sapralapabhramashwasastikshno hanyajvaro naram.
Acute fever associated with delirium, giddiness and dyspnea kills a patient by a weak, ten or twelve days.

           Asadhyo balavanyascha keshasimantakrujjvarah.
Deep-seated, long standing and severe fever and the one which marks the parting line of the hair in emaciated and swollen persons is incurable.
Strotobhirvisruta dosha guravo rasavahibhihi. (53)
           Sarvadehanugah stabdha jvaram kurvanti santatam.
Saptaham va dashaham va dwadashaham sudusaha. (54)
           Sa shighra shigrakaritvat prashamam yati hanti va.
Kaladushyaprakrutibhirdoshastulyo hi santatam. (55)
           Nishpratyanikah kurute tasmajgyeha sudusaha.
Yatha dhatustatha mutram purisham chaniladayah. (56)
           Yugapanchanupadyante niyamat santate jvare.
Sa shudhya vapyashudhya va rasadinamasheshatah. (57)
           Sapatahadishu kaleshu prashamam yati hanti va.
Yada tu natishudhyanti na va shudhyanti sarvashah. (58)
           Dvadashaite samuddhistha santatasyashrayastada.
Visarge dwadashe krutva divaseavyaktalakshanam. (59)
           Durlabhopashamah kalam dirghamapyanuvartate.
Iti buddhwa jvaram Vaidya upakramettu santatam. (Charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/60)
           Kriyakramavidhau yuktah prayah pragapatarpane.
The heavy doshas spread all over the body through the channels carrying rasa and stiffened give rise to santata jvara (remittent fever). Being unbearable and quick-acting it gets subsided or kills the patient by the period of seven, ten or twelve days. Dosha equal in respect of time, dushya and constitution and having no counter -acting factor causes the remittent fever and as such is quite unberable. In remittent fever, as a rule, vata, etc. also effect urine and faeces simultaneously as the dhatus. This fever gets subsided or becomes fatal in periods of a weak, etc. according to condition whether rasa etc have been purified completely or not. When they are not purified completely or entirely the remittent fever gets lodged in the twelve entities. Thus, even after remission on twelfth day, it continuous hidden for a long time without responding to any treatment. Considering all this, the physician should treat the case of fever. Mostly in such environment desaturating remedy is administered at first.  
Raktadhatwashrayah prayo doshah satatakam jvaram. (61)
           Sapratyanikah kurute kalavruddhikshayatmakam.
Ahoratre satatako dwao kalanuvartate. (Charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/62)
Dosha often lodged in rakta dhatu and with some counteracting factor causes satata jvara which rises and falls according to corresponding time. The satatak jvara rises twice in twenty-four hours.

Anyedyushkam jvaram dosho ruddhwa medovahah sirah. (63)

           Anyedyushkam jvaram kuryadapi sanshritasya shonitam. (65)
Mamsastrotansyanugato janayettu trutiyakam.
           Sanshrito medaso marge doshaschapi chaturthakam. (66)
Anyedyushkah pratidinam dinam hitva trutiyakah.
           Dinadwayam yo vishramya pratyeti sa chaturthakah. (Charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/67)
Anyedyushka (quotidian fever) is caused by dosha which gets support from one of the factors such as time, constitution and dushya obstructs the vessels carrying medas in the presence of the counteracting factor. In this, fever rises once in twenty-four hours. The dosha lodged in asthi (bone) and majja (marrow) causes tertian and quartan fevers. The paroxysm of dosha is at the interval of two days, one day or daily. The others describe otherwise such as – quotidian fever is caused by the dosha even if it is lodged in rakta. If it goes to the channels of mamsa, it causes tertian fever while it gives rise to quartan fever if it is lodged in the channels of medas. The quotidian fever comes daily, the tertian on a day’s interval and the quartan at the interval of two days.

           Adhishete tatha dhatum doshah kale cha kupyati. (68)
Sa vruddhim balakalam cha prapya doshastrutiyakam.
           Chatuthakam cha kurute pratyanika balakshayat. (Charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/69)
As a seed lies dormant in the soil and grows up in time, doshas stay in dhatus and get vitiated in opportune time. The dosha having attained exacerbation and timely strength due to weakening of the counteracting factor gives rise to the tertian as well as the quartan fever.
Krutva vegam gatabalah sve sve sthane vyavasthitah.
           Punarvivrudha sve kale jvarayanti narah malah. (Charak chikitsa /Jwara adhyaya 3/70)
After the paroxysm, the doshas being weakened stay in their respective places and being reinforced in their opportune times again give rise to fever.
Kaphapittatrikgrahi prushtadvatakaphatmakah.
           Vatapittachirograhi trividhah syattrutiyakah. (71)

Heaviness, anxious expression, agitation, malaise, vomiting, anorexia, external heat, body-ache and yawning- these are the symptoms of the fever located in rasa dhatu.
Red and hot boils, thirst, frequent hemoptysis, burning sensation, redness, giddiness, narcosis and delirium are the symptoms of the fever located in rakta dhatu.
Internal heat, thirst, fainting, malaise, diarrhea, foul smell and convulsions are the symptoms of the fever located in mamsa dhatu.
Perspiration, excessive thirst, delirium, frequent vomiting, intolerance to own smell, malaise and anorexia- are the symptoms of the fever located in meda dhatu.
Diarrhea, vomiting, tearing pain in bones, groaning, convulsions and dyspnea- are the symptoms of the fever located in asthi dhatu.
Hiccup, dyspnea, cough, darkness before eyes, cutting pain in vital parts, externally cold but internally burning sensation- are the symptoms of the fever located in majja dhatu.
The fever located in rasa and rakta is curable; that located in shukra is incurable.

The eight types of fever have been described with regard to their etiology and symptoms collectively and now their symptoms are being described individually.
Headache, tearing pain in smaller joints, burning sensation, horripilation, dryness of throat and mouth, vomiting, thirst, fainting, giddiness, anorexia, insomnia, delirium, yawning- these are the symptoms of fever caused by vata and pitta.
Feeling of cold, heaviness, drowsiness, feeling of wetness, pain in smaller joints, headache, coryza, cough, lack of perspiration, pyrexia and medium intensity- these are the symptoms of fever caused by vata and kapha.
Frequent alternate feeling of cold and heat, frequent alternate perspiration and non-perspiration, fainting, cough, anorexia, thirst, discharge of mucus and bile, sliminess and bitterness in mouth and drowsiness- - these are the symptoms of fever caused by kapha and pitta. Coryza, vomiting, lassitude, drowsiness, anorexia, poor digestion- these are the symptoms in fever caused by severe kapha, moderate pitta and mild vata.
Yellow urine and eyes, burning sensation, thirst, giddiness and anorexia these are the symptoms in fever caused by severe pitta, moderate kapha and mild vata.
Headache, tremors, dyspnea, delirium, vomiting and anorexia these are the symptoms in fever caused by severe vata, moderate kapha and mild pitta.
Feeling of cold, heaviness, drowsiness, excessive pain in bones and head these are the symptoms in fever caused by severe kapha, moderate vata and mild pitta.
Dyspnea, cough, coryza, dryness of mouth, and excessive chest pain these are the symptoms in fever caused by severe vata, moderate pitta and mild kapha.
Diarrhea, poor digestion, thirst, burning sensation, anorexia and giddiness these are the symptoms in fever caused by severe pitta, moderate vata and mild kapha.
Momentary sensations of heat and cold, pain in bone joints and head; tearful, dirty, red and crooked eyes, ears with tinnitus and pain, throat as if covered with awns, drowsiness, fainting, delirium, cough, dyspnea, anorexia, giddiness; tongue as if charred and roughened, excessive laxity in organs, hemoptysis, turning of head, thirst, insomnia, cardiac pain, delayed and little elimination of sweat, urine and faeces, limbs not much emaciated, continuous groaning, appearance of rashes and blackish and reddish patches, muteness, inflammation in channels, heaviness in abdomen and delayed digestion of doshas.

Fever caused by ill attachment with passion, anxiety, fear or anger and also by infection of organisms is known as abhishangaj jvara. Passion, anxiety and fear aggaravate pitta and infection of organisms aggravate all the three doshas manifesting symptoms according to the organism concerned. Eight types of such syndromes have been described in the context of bhutas. some also take the fever caused by contact of poisonous air as abhishangaj which gets pacified by the anti-poison treatment. The fever caused by exorcism and cursing of the accomplished persons is associated with all the doshas vitiated and is very severe and unbearable. It exhibits symptoms of sannipata jvara along with other afflictions of mind, senses and body. The application of exorcism is known by seeing and hearing himself or by inference through its pacification. Due to variousness of exorcism and cursing, the symptoms in respective cases are observed differently according to practice and application. In the fever caused by passion, the symptoms are predominantly with meditation and long breath. Likewise, the fever caused by anxiety, has predominantly tears, that caused by fear has terror, the fever caused by anger has intense agitation and in case of infection of evil spirit or (organism) the patient exhibits superhuman or abnormal characters. In the fever caused by poisonous contact predominant symptoms are fainting, confusion, narcosis and malaise. In some cases, fever rises before the above symptoms appear while in other cases it comes forth after them or simultaneously with them. The features of the fevers caused by passion etc, are also found in other diseases caused by them. After emesis and lightening the patient should be provided with gruels in time cooked with respective drugs starting with scum-gruel in the beginning till the fever comes down or for six days. By this agni is stimulated like fire by fuel. Due to medication and lightness, they are appetizer, carminative for wind, urine, faeces and doshas; due to being hot and liquid they are diaphoretic; due to being liquid they alleviate thirst, due to being nutrient they provide strength; due to being laxative they produce lightness and due to being suitable in fevers they act as antipyretic. Hence the wise physicians, from the very beginning, manage the cases of fever with gruels except in that caused by wine. Gruel is not advised in fever associated with alcoholism, alcoholic addicts, in summer, having predominance of pitta and kapha or with upward internal haemorrhage.

The patient of fever with poor digestion should, at first, take when hungry the gruel made of parched paddy boiled with long pepper and ginger which is easily digestible and alleviates fever. One fond of sours may take the same soured with pomegranates and added with ginger. One having diarrhea and predominance of pitta should take it cold and added with honey. The patient having complications of pain in sides, pelvis and head should take the gruel of red shali rice cooked with gokshura and kantakari. It alleviates fever too. The patient suffering from fever and diarrhea should take soured liquid gruel cooked with prushniparni, bala, bilva, shunthi, utpala and dhanyaka. The patient of fever having cough, dyspnea and hiccup should take the gruel cooked with vidarigandhadi group which is appetizer and diaphoretic. The patient of fever having constipation should take the liquid gruel having barley cooked with long pepper and amalaka fruits and added with adequate quantity of ghee. It acts as carminative. The patient of fever having constipation and abdominal pain should take liquid gruel cooked with mrudvika, pippalimula, chavya and shunti. In fever associated with cutting pain in abdomen one should take the liquid gruel with bilva and cooked with bala, vrikshamla, kolamla, prushniparni and kantakari. The patient having no diaphoresis and sleep and having excessive thirst should take the liquid gruel fried with ghee and cooked with shunti and amalaka and added with sugar. This acts as antipyreretic.

The patients of fever having plenty of impurity should be subjected to timely evacuative therapy, upwards and downwards, to be described in the kalpasthana.
Madanphala and pippali or indrayava or madhuka should be administered with hot water as emetic for alleviation of fever.
In fever, emesis is prescribed with honey-water, sugarcane juice, saline water, wine or saturating drinks.
Juice of amalaka and grapes fruit acts as purgative as well as antipyretic. Similar is the juice of amalaka fried with ghee.
One suffering from fever should take powder of trivrutta mixed with honey and ghee or decoction of triphala adding with honey and ghee, or aragwadha with milk or grape juice, or trivrutta or trayamana with milk.
One becomes free from fever by taking haritaki with grapes or grape juice with hot milk.

By taking milk boiled with panchamula one suffering from fever becomes free from cough, dyspnea, headache, pain in sides and chronic fever. Likewise, by taking with boiled eranda rootsone becomes free from fever associated with cutting pain in abdomen. Similar is the effect of the milk boiled with tender fruits of bilwa.
Milk boiled with gokshura, bala, kantakari, jaggery and shunti alleviates retention of faeces and urine, oedema and fever.
Milk boiled with shunti, mrudwika and kharjura and added with ghee, honey and sugar alleviates thirst and fever.
Even milk alone boiled with four times water is efficacius in fever.
The fresh warm milk overcomes the fever caused by vata and pitta quickly.
Milk is an excellent pacifier of all types of chronic fever. That should be taken hot or cold and boiled with respective drugs.

If the impurity is located in pakwashaya, one should apply the non-unctuous and unctuous enema useful in fever which will be described in the siddhisthana.
Patola leaves, nimba leaves, ushira, aragvadha, hribera, rohini, tikta, gokshura madana fruits, shalaparni and bala- all together should be boiled in half-water milk, till milk remains. This added with honey and ghee along with paste of madana, musta, pippali, madhuka and kutaja should be used as antipyretic enema. After the passage is cleansed, impurity is removed, dhatus become cheerful, bodyache goes away, organs become light the patient becomes free from fever quickly.
Similarly, the fluid for enema may be prepared with aragwadha, ushira, madanaphala and four parnis (shalaparni, prushniparni, mudgaparni and mashaparni) which is added with the paste of priyangu, madana, musta, shatvha, madhuyashtika, ghee, jaggery and honey. This makes an excellent antipyretic enema.
Guduchi, trayamana, chandana, madhuka, vasa, shalaparni, bala, prushniparni and madana – all together should be boiled to decoction with the soup of the meat of wild animals. The paste of pippali, madana, musta and madhuka along with a bit of salt, honey and ghee should be added to it. This makes an antipyretic non-unctuous enema which also provides strength, sweating and relish.

Considering the cold or the hot character of the two types of fever, massage, anointings and sprinklings should be applied as desired.

Chandana, bhadrashri, kalanusarya, kaliyaka, padma, padmaka, ushira, sariva, madhuka, prapaundrika, nagakesara, udichya, vanya, padma, utpala, nalina, kumuda, sugandhika, pundarika, shatapatra, bisa, mrunala, shaluka, shaivala, kaseruka, ananta, kusha, kasha, ikshu, darbha, shara, nala, shali, jambu, vetasa, vanira, gundra, kakubha, asana, ashwakarna, syandana, vatapotha, shala, tala, dhava, tinisha, khadira, kadara, kadamba, kashmarya, sarja, plaksha, vata, kapitana, udumbara, ashwattha, nyagrodha, dhataki, durva, itkata, shrungataka, manjishtha, jyotishmati, pushkarbija, kraunchandana, badari, kovidara, kadali, samvartaka, arishta, shataparva, sitakumbhika, shatavari, shriparni, shravani, mahashravani, rohini, shitapaki, odanapaki, kala, bala, payasya, vidari, jivaka, rushabaka, meda, mahameda, madhurasa, rushyaprokta, trunashunya, mocharasa, atarushaka, bakula, kutaja, patola, nimba, shalmali, narikela, kharjura, mrudwika, priyala, priyangu, dhanwana, atmagupta and other shitavirya drugs which are available should be boiled and made into decoction. Oil half the quantity of the decoction should be cooked with the above decoction along with double the quantity of milk and the paste of the same drugs. By massage, this oil alleviates the hot fever quickly. These very drugs pounded coarsely and well-cooked should be applied as anointment. With the same drugs, boiled and cooled water should be used for bath and sprinkling.

One suffering from burning sensation should lie down comfortably on the bed covered with the cold leaves of pushkara, lotus and water lily, banana and clean silk cloth cooled with sandal water or in water-cooled chamber or a room sprinkled with cold water. He should also have the pleasant contact of gold, conch, coral, jewels and pearls cooled with sandal water. He should be fanned with garlands, flowers, blue water lily or lotus and other various fans carrying cool air and showering sandal water. Rivers, tanks, lotus leaves and clean ponds which pacify burning sensation, thirst, malaise and fever should be used for bath. Such persons should be entertained with passionate movements by charming and favorite women passed with sandal and wearing jewels and pearls. Cold food and drinks, gardens, breeze and moon-rays pacify the fever with burning sensation.

Now (I) will mention the remedial measures like massage etc. for the patients of fever desiring heat. With this decoction and the paste of the same drugs dissolved in sura, sauviraka, tushodaka, maireya, medaka, dadhimanda, aranala and katvara, oil in the quantity of 2.56 kg should be cooked. With this lukewarm oil the patient of fever desiring heat should be massaged, thus the cold fever subsides. The same very drugs pounded finely and in the lukewarm condition should be anointed on the body of the patient. Lukewarm water boiled with these drugs should be used for bath and sprinkling to pacify cold fever.

The thirteen types of fomentation described in the concerned chapter (su.14) should be applied by the physician according to dose and time to alleviate the cold fever. The same hut, the cot and the coverings along with dense incence of aguru pacify the cold fever. Young women with well-constituted body pacify the cold fever by their embracing due to the heat of the youthful age. Diaphoretic food and drinks and those which alleviate vata and kapha overcome cold fever if applied considering the comparative strength of the above two doshas in combination.

Lightening is not indicated in the fever caused by vata, exertion, injury and the chronic one. These cases should be managed with pacificatory measures. As the doshas, having thrown out the gastric fire and circulating along the rasa produce fever, the power of digestion diminishes. As even the inflamed fire inspite of fuel does not cook the rice well in cooking vessel because of being diverted outside due to wind, the digestive fire thrown out of its normal location by doshas in the patient of fever can not digest the food taken or digests light food with difficulty. Keeping this in view, the management with lightening etc, has been prescribed. Doshas entered into the seven dhatus get digested in the period of a week that is why the fever is said as mature on the eighth day. The patient having diminished agni and aggravated doshas is left suddenly by the vital breath or suffers for long if he takes food particularly some heavy one. Because of this reason the wise physician should not prescribe diet in large quantity or excessively heavy or fatty from the start of the fever even in vatika fever. In vatika fever, if there is no association of any other dosha, massage,etc. should be applied ignoring the usual procedure. Thereafter he should be given medicinal extract and then diet with meat-soup. Other measures efficacious in chronic fever should also be adopted. In patients who are constitutionally predominant in kapha and deficient in vata if fever comes with abundant kapha and low fever it does not mature even in a week due to mild agni. Hence he should be managed with the said lightening, light diet etc. till ten days and thereafter with medicinal extracts.

In cases of fever caused by dual or aggrevated doshas one should prescribe proper drugs considering their comparative predominance or equality. The sannipataj fever should be treated by increasing the diminished doshas, decreasing the aggravated ones and keeping the condition of the location of kapha in view.

In the end of the aggravated fever, severe swelling occurs at the root of the ears from which one rarely survives. It should be treated with prompt blood-letting, intake of ghee, anointings, snuffings, and gargles which alleviate kapha and pitta.

The usual procedure should be left in tertian and quartan fever because there is often extrinsic factor associated with the intermittent fever. Visham jvara which is predominant in vata should be treated ghee, enema- nonunctuous and unctuous – and fatty and hot food and drinks. That predominant in pitta should be treated with purgation, milk, medicated ghee, bitter and cold drugs. Vishama jvara predominant in kapha should be treated with emesis, digestives, rough diet, lightening measures, astringent and hot drugs.

Now (I) shall mention the formulations which alleviate the intermittent fever. They should be administered by the wise physician after considering dosh etc.
Concentrated wine for drink, cook, partridge and peacock in diet should be used in intermittent fever. The patient should take shatphala ghruta or haritaki, or decoction of triphala or juice of guduchi, or decoction of nilini, ajagandha, trivritta and katurohini, at the advent of fever, after unction and fomentation or he should take the large dose of ghee and then vomit ,or after taking plenty of meal he should vomit, or after a good meal he should take plenty of wine and then go to bed. In intermittent fever, one should prescribe non-unctuous or sustaining enemas or the patient should take cats faeces along with milk on the same day, or the bulls faeces added with rocksalt along with curd-scum or wine. The use of pippali, triphala, curd, buttermilk, panchagavya ghrita and milk is commended in intermittent fever.
The fever is prevented by wearing gems, auspicious herbs and poison and also by intake of anti-poison drugs.

One, worshipping devotedly Lord Shiva along with Parvati, congregation of mothers and attendants, is relieved quickly of intermittent fever. One is freed from all types of fever by eulogizing Vishnu thousand- headed, master of mobile and immobile and omnipresent with thousand names. One overcomes fever by worshipping with sacrifices Brahma, Ashwins, Indra, Agni, Himalaya, Ganga and congregation of Maruts. One is relieved of fever by devotion to parents, respect to teachers, celibacy, penance, truthfulness, observance of rules, repetition of mantra, offering of oblation, hearing of Vedas and visiting saintly persons.
In fever located in rasa one should prescribe emesis and fasting; in that located in rakta blood-letting and anointings along with pacificatory measures; purgation with fasting is wholesome in fever located in mamsa and medas. In that located in asthi and majja, non-unctuous and unctuous enema should be administered.

Fever caused by cursing, exorcism, contact of evil spirits is treated with divine therapy.
Fever caused by injury is cured by intake and massage of ghee, blood-leeting, suitable wines and food consisting of meat-soup and rice. Fever with hardness of bowels in those addicted to wines should be treated with wines and food with meat soup.
Fever caused by wounds and ulcers get controlled by the treatment of the above causes.
Fever caused by passion, grief and fear are pacified by soothing, talks, meeting with the beloved, alleviation of vayu and inducing exhilaration.
Fever caused by anger is subsided by liked and favourite objects, measures alleviating pitta and soothing words.
Passion overcomes the fever caused by anger and vice-versa. Both alleviate the fever caused by fear and grief.

During remission of fever, the patient groans, vomits, moves, respires, becomes pale, has perspired organ, trembles, faints frequently, has delirium, whole body being hot or cold, becomes unconscious and as if filled with anger during rise of fever, passes faeces with impurity and sound, liquid and with force. These should be taken as signs of the remission of fever.
In case the patient has profuse morbidity and the fever is acute and high, the remission occurs by crisis due to proper management and maturation of doshas. On the other hand, if the fever is chronic, the fever having risen due to aggravation of dosha gradually comes down. This is remission by lysis.

The patient during fever or convalescence should avoid burning, heavy, unsuitable and antagonistic food and drinks. He should also abstain from sexual intercourse, over-work, bath and over-eating. Thus fever subsides and thereafter does not relapse. During convalescence one should not take exercise, sexual intercourse, bath and walking till he regains strength.

If one takes these avoidable food and activities during convalescence before regaining normal strength, the fever relapses. It also relapses even with slight mis-management in cases where temperature comes down though the doshas are not eliminated properly. That relapsed fever kills the patient suffering since long, debilitated and with poor agni in a short time. Some times doshas get matured in successive dhatus, thus they do not produce fever but cause harm to the body. They produce anxious expression, swelling, malaise, paleness, anorexia, itching, rashes, pimples and mildness of appetite. Similarly, other related disorders too relapse on a slight unwholesome activity if doshas are not eliminated properly. Hence even after the fever subsides, doshas should be eliminated or pacified according to condition, strength and vitality. in such cases, evacuation with mild measures, sustaining enemas, light vegetable soup and meat-soups of the wild animals are wholesome.
Massage, anointing, bath, incense, collyrium, bitter ghee are prescribed in relapsed fever. If the fever relapses due to heavy, channel-blocking and unsuitable diet, management with lightening and hot therapy as mentioned above may be done.
Kiratatiktaka, kutaki, musta, parpatak and guduchi – decoction of these drugs together, if taken regularly, destroys the relapsing fever.
Tasyam tasyamavasthayam jvaritanam vichakshanah.

The wise physician, considering the management of fever, should treat the case according to the condition.

Fever is the king of all diseases, destroyer of all creatures and severe, hence a physician should be particularly cautious in creating it.
Now the summing up verse-
Thus Atreya has said to Agnivesha the treatment of fever according to question and in order for well-being of the creatures.
Ityagniveshakrute tantre charakapratisanskrute chikitsitasthane jvarachikitsitam nama trutiyo adhyayah.
Thus ends the third chapter on treatment of fever in chikitsa sthana in the treatise composed by Charaka.
