I’m working on a crochet pattern that recommended Scheepjes Whirls yarn

and figured it wouldn’t look as good in a yarn like Lion Brand Mandala which is my current favorite acrylic because Mandala’s color changes are abrupt. There’s no blending, really.

I’ve been moving away from acrylic, but the price point on natural fiber yarns is so high that said moving away from acrylic turned into not making anything at all for years unless I had a reason.

I don’t have a lot of money.

Scheepjes Whirls (which are cotton/acrylic blend)  isn’t cheap.

Since I wanted to make a larger blanket than in the pattern, I ordered 6 cakes.

Luckily, I read the reviews.

Reviewers said that sometimes the joins are terrible, and sometimes the yarn tangles a lot.

The way they achieve this smooth gradient-like color transition is that this is a 4-ply yarn and they change one ply at a time.

I recaked everything thanks to those reviews, discovered that they’re wound WAY too tight which contributes to “yarn babies” when pulling from the center, and found that this yarn is inconsistent.

Take both of the tan/brown cakes. One was mostly fine, no bad joins, no bad tangles just a few small ones, until I hit one big, slubby join that had a 10 inch tail sticking off the main yarn that I had to cut out and rejoin.

The other cake of the same colorway?  EVERY join is huge, felt-like, and slubby, and it tangled repeatedly while I was rewinding it.

The blue/purple has had a few messy joins but mostly been ok. Those have been mild enough that rolling them between my palms smoothed them out well enough. They’re still bulky, but joins generally are and I don’t have the patience to redo all of them and lose a few feet of yarn overall doing so.

The tinsel gets stuck on my hook sometimes.

The thickness of all of them is inconsistent, too. Sometimes it’s dense and narrow like crochet thread, and sometimes it’s softer and a little fluffier like a sock yarn.

Unfortunately the colors I’ve chosen were picked out of colors the blanket’s hopeful recipient likes and not colors I like, so I think it’s pretty dang ugly so far.

The tinsel isn’t as garish in person as in this photo. It’s rather subtle, really.

Hopefully it’ll look more interesting and attractive when it’s done.

It took me a year and a half to crochet it and sew in the lining. As I made the last stitch, tears gleamed in my eyes. I whispered:“never again”.

Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush in bordeau on US 1

Not my first lace but my first doily and my first time knitting with such fine thread. I've been dying to dig into this part of my stash for a year and I think this may be the beginning of a long and beautiful friendship with Mr. Sugar Rush! It's vibrant and shiny and has a touch of stretch. I had to adjust to seeing the stitches so small and with such dark thread, but I switched to knitting by daylight and that solved that problem! I understand much better now how those old Shetland knitters go so fast with high tension and I'm excited to experiment more!

This pair of armwarmers are going well, I'm knitting them with Scheepjes' Stone Washed which is a mixure between white cotton and purple-brown arcylic twirled in. It results in a soft and smooth but as well warm and comfi yarn.

Perfect for the winter. Once those are finished I'll add them to my shop(s).
