Seg El meets his grandson- who is so much younger and what little Kal El knows of Krypton is false and horrifying.

Kal El, who looks no older than he is, takes a step back, his hands squeezing into hesitant fists. Seg frowns. Firstly, because it hurts to see someone wearing his family crest both scared of and clearly angry with him.  A far more distant second appalled thought is That’s not how you make a fist. Who taught him how to throw a punch? 

"Easy," Seg says, and gestures to the patch sewn onto his own shirt, the same crest. "See? El Mayara. We're family."  He hoped the translation worked. He knew from Adam that the tech really only covered words that had close enough to exact translations. That would be enough, though, right?

"Leave," Kal says, his voice wavering. "I don't want to fight you."

"Uh, then don't?" Seg frowns, deeper this time. "I'm here to help you."

"I don't want your help, invader." Kal takes a step forward, which Seg doesn't think is a great sign, frankly. "I'm not going to betray this planet. You can't make me."

Seg rolls his eyes. "Good thing I wasn't planning on it. I'm here to help you defend it from Brainiac, Kal El."

"What did you call me?"

"Your... name? Kal El. I'm Seg El. Your... well, it's complicated."

"El. You said that before. The man on the ship.."

"Jor El. Or, uh, a hologram of him, anyways. Your dad.  We're family. The House of El. I'm..." Well, saying it wouldn't make it sound less weird or be less true, "Your grandfather. From, uh, the past. Technically. Like I said, Brainiac's involved, so it's kind of a mess. I'm here to help you fight him."

"Who's Brainiac? Why was I sent here?" "It's a lot of long stories. How about we get something to eat and I catch you up? Rao, how am I the one who knows what's going on? Usually it's the other way around.  Gotta say, I like it better, knowing half of what’s going on instead of none. So, what do you know about Krypton?"

“If you’re my grandfather, tell me about the invasion.”

“Hmmm, ok, so maybe I don’t know everything, exactly. That’s fine. Uh, Krypton. Home planet? It exploded? Ring any bells?”

Kal El shook his head, but Seg knew the look of a liar well, and this kid was not good at it.  “Right. The basics then. Seriously, is there somewhere we can go or are we just going to sit out here? It’s so…open. And weird. How do you stand it?”

“It’s home,” Kal said. “Tell me everything.”

A story from one of my maladaptive daydreams: chapter one: the shift

Violet couldn’t help but gawk at the sight before her,She was on Krypton, like actual Krypton and able to breathe as a human. She had to be dreaming or did she shift. She looked at the book in her hands, sure enough she had reality shifted to Krypton on accident. Why didn’t she choose something like a necklace or a rock to be her grounding object. All that time researching different methods and struggle just to watch the show and do it on accident. Accident or not at least scripting that she looked like a native Kryptonian paid off, she looked much less suspicious then Adam Strange did in the first episode.It was funny she thought, as far as lies go she can either say she’s from the future or that she can see the future. If she chose to be kryptonian she can easily be “Rankless”. She kept walking assuming she was in Kandor. What was she going to do? Where was she gonna go? Getting here was the easy part. She heard footsteps steps behind her that were light enough to be able to tell the person was either sneaking or they were very small. Violet made sure to round the next corner just to be sure and . . Dead end. She turned around only to be faced with the one character she’d hoped not to meet first, Dru Zod. She only had enough time to curse under her breath be for she took a punch to the temple affectively knocking her out.

Seg-El for the character bingo!

So after getting halfway through the second half of Prodigy last night, I finally gave in on starting my partly rewatch/partly first time watch of Krypton. Mostly so I could refresh my memory on canon Seg-El before answering this.

... I forgot how freaking creepy and unsettling I find the Voice of Rao's mask. *shudder*

Anywho, Seg-El being a fighty rebellious type is fun. But I do wish they'd stop killing off his loved ones. I know he's got no immediate family left, but he's got his best friend and his girlfriend and his his intended-for-official-co-parenting girlfriend and eventually Adam's gonna become important to him. Like. He still has so much potential for losing loved ones. *squints at the screen* Stop that.

Going back to him being fighty and temperamental - I like that he gets to be that in a way that his grandson really doesn't. Clark is always having to be so careful of his powers and what happens if he were to lose control of his temper. He has to always be aware of his power even when he's being faced by people who want to persecute him. He can be angry, but he has to always keep it tightly under control. But Seg-El can just kinda let his temper loose. His family has been screwed over repeatedly and he's suffering persecution specifically for being an El as well as for being unranked in general. He gets to be angry about it and punch people over it and tell people to take their attempts to control him and shove it.

His relationships are a little messy and that it's basically polyamorous from the get go is lovely too. Cause he's got his girlfriend and she's got her matrix approved boyfriend and now he also has a matrix approved girlfriend too and the polycule is just gonna get more complicated from here.
