the miss eunjang pageant was suggested as a joke but somehow the students sincerely hoped either teddy or gray would participate. class 5 begged gray to do it but he nominated Colton so he went instead.

⋆ it's only for a moment, where he gets this sorta perplexed look on his face; once he recovers tho, he just ?? quietly accepts it ?? probably plays it off with some sort of "you think so?" or a simple "yeah?", but secretly keeps the comment lingering in the back of his mind :)))

⋆ it's not that he doesn't like it, he's just not good with compliments ;; isn't sure if he should compliment you back or make a big deal of it, so he just takes your word for it when you call him pretty and moves on ;; lameee

Spoilers for chapter 227...

Y'all the scene of Seongmok crawling towards Dongha totally pulled at my heartstrings 😓. Now don't get me wrong, Dongha totally deserves to get dragged up and down that street for what he did to Eugene, and really just in general for being such a menace. But still... poor Mok, my heart just kinda hurt for him a little.

And also,

HE CAN TALK?!!?

This whole time I assumed he was mute. But he can actually speak!! And he only did so he could plea for Dongha's safety 😢. Please my heart just can't with this.

But it does makes me wonder if the wave in his voice is due to vocal cord damage, and that's why he choses not to talk, or is it because he just got stomped by Wolf? This all actually makes me want some more MokHa duo content now or at least Seongmok content. 🤡

One low-key thing I've subconsciously appreciated about Weak Hero is the lack of fan service. Pretty much every other popular fighting manhwa will have shots dedicated to showing off a character's abs, like we're all horribly interested in appreciating a 17-year old's body.

Weak Hero is like nah, they're hella strong, you don't see the muscles, but they're definitely there. When we happen to see the character's arms, they never look like they're on steroids. Like, Wolf's arms are hella skinny and he's still ranked in the top 5.

Characters like Seongmok and probably Myles, they likely have abs. But we'll never get a random shot of them looking like they haven't drank water in days, and I'm thankful for that. The only character who's ever shown off was Jeongmu Choi, and he can't fight, period. He's buff just for the aesthetic.

Ben fighting Donald makes me wonder how Donny's physique compares to Ben's. Donald fought people beefier than him and still won, so under all the layers of Gucci and Dior, he must be like...slim but all muscle. We've actually seen how he's built (from the back) and Ben is a totally different weight class. But weight class advantages don't seem to apply to Donald or the other characters at all, given they know what they're doing.

So unless they're like Wolf and hit people indiscriminately, the fighting in Weak Hero is about how smart you are, rather than how visibly strong you are. That's why reading it is more fun than reading other fighting manhwa.

ooff.... ok listen seongje is my no. 1 feral little meow meow I'll support him even if he decides to commit murder and ofc I'll be rooting for him in the upcoming fight but I am actually not that sure on who's gonna win

Like hagho canonically only lost to baku and it was REALLY close and listen I'm not one of those boys who go into power scaling bs I'm going purely off the vibes

I think seongje might win or it would end up as a draw, since this arc is building up the fall of the union I think every of the higher up union guys will get defeated by eunjang bc it would make sense and serve as a final thematic ending to the series and I think seopass is building that up w the match ups (hagho v seongje, gayool v jihun, that music kid v seongmok, Colton v forrest etc etc)

tldr: no matter what the outcome is I will be satisfied EXCEPT. if their fight isn't as dramatic and doesn't deliver the absolute mayhem I want to see then I'm gonna go on twitter and complain

Weak Hero 184 - Review & Summary

Non-spoiler summary: Without going into details, this chapter is what I like to call a 'seed & develop' chapter. Seopass (author) is master of story telling, and this entire chapter is a perfect mix of 'boring things that need to be explained' and 'massive character defining moments'. We see some details into the minds of the Chungil Lee (Mr.CEO), Mr. Song, and we're given a bit of a cliff hanger when Philip Kim meets the Mok-Ha duo.

( ꈍᴗꈍ)ﾉ✿ *SPOILERS* ( ꈍᴗꈍ)ﾉ✿

Review: The chapter starts off where 183 left off. Mr. CEO is in his car watching Eugene's aunt (don't you dare touch her you dirty old man). He yells at some punks to disperse so that they don't bring down the property value in the area with their presence (what a glorious insult) and then we get introduced to his driver - who gives off some serious 'future important character' vibes.

His driver asks him about the land he's recently purchased and its revealed that it was a congressman who suggested to him that buying the land around the development area was better to avoid suspicion. If I'm being honest I never used to pay attention to these moments in the story, I knew they were important and I'm sure that the intelligent writing really comes across in moments like these but my smol weeb brain usually just skims these parts of the story because it's 3 am and I don't have the mental CPU to spare.

The story then switches over to Donald Na who is hard at work again behind his desk. The Mok-Ha duo is delivering some paper work for Mr.Song when suddenly, as they're leaving Mr. Song gives Dongha Baek some 'spending money' for the two of them. In exchange he'd like them to tell him any information they get from Donald a few days they tell any 'other places'. Dongha checks the amount and immediately turns into a money ho* (he probably has a lot of hair products to buy).

After the Duo leaves, his assistant starts asking him questions and it comes out that this shady mofo is using defective building material for the new development. Tsk tsk these old men....

Ok, we are out of the bushes now. The story jumps over to Philip Kim, whose gone to see Kingsley because he was insulted by the money he received after giving the union some information from his fathers company (he and Dongha are not the same).

Kingsley makes it very clear here that he was paid for the information because he's a simple informant, he's not a member of the union so he needs to be compensated. Philip is basically told, 'this is how it is', 'no you can't speak to Donald', 'it was and order from Donald, nothing you can do, bye beach'.

One of the things I love about Weak Hero is that it gives its characters credible personalities, in this brief exchange we can see Philip's desperation and shame. He may be a manipulative jerk but his character is fleshed out so well that you kind of start to feel bad for the guy. (It really makes me wonder what is going to happen with him, he's not the type to sit around and accept his fate, but he's also weak as hell in a school full of fighting geniuses and monsters).

Philip leaves, has a mini existential crisis and then bumps into the Mok-Ha duo. More accurately he and Dongha eye each other up before Dongha teases him and asks for a cigarette. When Philip says he doesn't have any, Dongha tells him to go buy some.

The chapter ends here and Im dying to see what Philip does. The love of his life, Donald Na, basically told him he's a call girl and then this easy going creep, who has everything he wants starts ordering him around.

Theories:

This series honestly gives us so much to work with. We STILL haven't figured things out from season 1 (why does the girl from Grays cram school know Julia???) and I am super grateful that Seopass gives us so much meat to chew over.

was just demoted? Seongmok Do doesn't say a word and in most chapters he's less decorative than a house plant. Although the money was given to the both of them, he's never shown to have a reaction.

And this guy, handsome driver guy, I have a few questions for you. Why are you giving off main character vibes in this car? how come you're asking Mr. CEO about his business? Why aren't we married yet? No, I don't trust this handsome face at all.

Wishful Thinking: Weak Hero Characters Edition (My Imagination of Their Careers)

I hope that Sieun (Gray) and Baekjin (Donald) will be the future mathematicians of Korea, solve new math problems and publish them academically. Maybe they will get a joint Nobel prize one day...and I hope Sieun will still ride a motorcycle!

I hope that Teo (Teddy) will run an animal shelter or pet shop. Not sure but maybe if he studies hard enough he could be a vet! Aja aja, Teo!!

I hope that Juntae (Eugene) will work in an NGO and help solve local social infrastructure problems. Maybe if he studies hard enough he could get a degree in engineering.

I hope that Juyang (Rowan) will use his Australian and Eunjang experiences to run a successful Youtube channel and become a great influencer.

I hope that Humin (Ben) will maybe try for the U-21 soccer team, and if that's too late for him I hope he could do whatever he's happy about (maybe open a popular pizza shop?). Or maybe he could join Juyang's channel.

I hope that Gayool (Gerard) will try singing again professionally, whether as a solo artist or in a band. And that he will be happy about it.

I hope that Hyuntak (Gogo) will try for a career in boxing. I hope he'll never, ever give up on his dreams.

I hope that Pilyoung (Philip) will become a successful businessman, but an ethical one. He's rather good as a political lobbyist too.

Whatever it is that Seongje (Wolf) wants to do I hope it's not criminal. I hope he has a hobby that he could expand into a business.

I hope that Hwangmo will find his own independent way and not just follow Seongje around anymore. I hope he'll stay friends with Jeongyeon (Jack) and Naksung. He's rather good in making friends...another person with a prospect as a lobbyist!

I hope that Hakho (Jake) will be a professional manga critic or maybe cosplayer. And occasionally play basketball or soccer with his friends and maybe Jihoon (Jimmy).

I hope that Jihoon will try to draw again and not afraid to show it to people. Maybe sketch more. Go and take a drawing course, dude. Manhwa artist as a career might be just for you...ehehe.

I hope that Sehan (Forrest) and Seungjin (Myles) will do something else other than gangster stuff.

On that note, I hope that Gongsam (Grape) can eat as many grapes as he wants. Maybe try making grape juice and sell them, or maybe a winery? Hmm.

I hope that Hyukjin (Dean) can eat as many bread as he wants and maybe try a career in modelling. His looks and drip are too good to waste. Or a gamer hehe.

I hope that Taegi (Timothy) will try a career in game development or business analyst. Gotta make use of that statistical analysis skill.

I hope that Seokhyeon (Kingsley) will find whatever he wants to do other than running the Union behind the scenes. I suspect that he might be interested in politics.

I hope that Hyoman (Colton) will find his strengths other than fighting. And this time with a better approach to life and friendships.

I hope that Seongjin will watch Gayool performing on stage again as a fan. And that he will enjoy Gayool's new music as much as he enjoyed his old one.

I hope that Dongha and Seongmok will find a great way to stay friends without hurting each other or other people. Maybe Dongha should model for a shampoo.

I hope that Jeongyeon (Kang) will be able to go to karaoke with Jihoon again, but this time with other people who also love singing! Maybe Gayool, Naksung, Seongjin, people who used to be his enemies. And I hope he will find something peaceful to do ( traveling?).

SPOILERS ALERT - Last Episode Reaction (Rant Part 2)

Nah.. it turns out that for the sake of my blood pressure, I had to make two rant posts in a row.

Thank you, Seopass-jakkanim for writing and creating this wonderful work with Kim Jinseok-nim, but I'm sorry that I can't be lenient about the less pleasing parts. So here is my reaction and long rant part 2 (not that you two writers or anyone would care, but I had to vent). I also included the pleasing parts at the end of the post.

First, you developed the characters' backgrounds in such a meticulous and detailed way and now you've abandoned them, or so I heard, to move on to another work. I mean gosh GOSH. Thank you for creating them BUT NO, THANK YOU for abandoning their proper arc resolutions. What would Sehan / Forrest and the others do? What would Jihoon / Jimmy do? Why are you left them stranded? Who exactly is Seongje / Wolf?

I appreciate that you tried to highlight the issues on young males' mental health problems by writing one character as suicidal (YES IT WAS HINTED THAT BAEKJIN / DONALD WAS SUICIDAL THAT NIGHT, WELL GUESS WHAT, IT WASN'T WRITTEN REALLY CLEARLY, WAS IT? Hmph) and another as depressed (SIEUN /GRAY, WHO ELSE) BUT you don't do that in a swoosh kind of way. No matter if they're suddenly reunited with their crush or best friend or whoever. What the hell was that? Show them being encouraged, show them opening up.

You introduced juvenile crimes and adult crimes into the plot and it's good, but now it's come to nothing. Why were they inserted into the story in the first place? To emphasize Baekjin's cruelty? As if school violence cases alone isn't enough? You could've just highlighted the school violence aspect. Now that part of the plot is left unresolved.

I understand why you make Seokhyeon / Kingsley so obsessed and that he has now dragged Dongha and Seongmok into this, who didn't look very happy or pleased about it. I MEAN PLEASE LET THEM GO? I know that they did wrong but they were minors and this is fiction, fgs.

You make sure that friendship is one of the key themes of the story but after that death, everything comes to a standstill. Is that it? Is that the point? But why, when your characters are minors with their future ahead of them? Why deny Seokhyeon, Dongha and Seongmok future too, when this is fiction and you're in a hurry to wrap things up for Sieun, Suho and the others?

Well I must be fair that there are good things in the last episode, though. These are them.

Hakho / Jake who found closure with himself and moving on to take care of Gwangseok /Kenny

Suho being okay although it doesn't seem that he's gone back to school (again, a reality with many bullying survivors).

The kids went to meet Suho / Stephen together with Sieun to Donghae area. No school trip scene, though. Everything is cut.

Jihwan (Sieun's old friend) being surprised that the monster Baku/Big Ben is Humin and is all smiley.

And he was so shocked that the famous White Mamba a.k.a Baeksa (the White Snake of Legend) is none other than Sieun. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

myles joo / joo seungjin

⋆ used to be star player on his middle school basketball team ! grew up playing with his big bro and made the team in his first year. was really good at it too. loved being on the court, and winning itself, of course. near the end of his second-year, though, a teammate started a fight with him which resulted in him getting kicked from the team

⋆ still likes to shoot hoops in his free time; it's relaxing for him, honestly. thought about joining the high school team but he didn't have time for it and the union. even though he does now, he still feels like something's holding him back from pursuing it

⋆ not a crazy cat person like teddy, but has a soft spot for the strays in his neighborhood they like him, surprisingly lol. can't leave them food since he lives in an apartment, but carries a few treats in his pocket for ones he sees~ there's a black cat who really likes him that's been around for a year now; secretly wants to keep him, but he can't see it going over well with his dad :,)

⋆ not a headcanon so much as my opinion, but would totallyyy suit an eyebrow piercing (because somebody needs to compete with donald lol). gave himself one in middle school, but it got infected after his face got fucked up in a fight and he had to remove it. thought about redoing it, then realized it wasn't safe to have with all the fights he gets into-

⋆ including the black one he always wears, he has a big snapback + baseball cap collection ! his favorites are displayed proudly on his wall, the rest boxed up in the closet

⋆ his hair looks like that because he cuts it at home. had one too many bad barbershop experiences and now he doesn't trust them, but his own skills are... subpar at best :,)

⋆ dongha is the type of mf who refuses to wear shorts- no matter what. it could be 900° and he will still wear pants, only because he hates how his legs look and feel in shorts. would sleep in them if he wasn't normal lol

⋆ dongha has known seongmok since childhood, even before they became friends. truth be told, dongha was a nasty little kid, so he didn't hang out with a lot of people. but seongmok (who was very quiet even back then !) started following him around one day and dongha, who tried to scare him off at first lol, soon realized he really liked having someone by his side :)

⋆ i know he smokes cigs in canon, but imo he's more of a vaper than anything. def one of those people who has 500 vapes and has to hit one every 2 minutes before suffering withdrawals- only elf bars, only fruity flavors

⋆ got this idea from an ask, but he lives with his grandma and has since middle school ! he's in a weird, defiant time in his life so he's not as close with her as she wants, but she loves him just the same~

⋆ to add onto this, when he isn't at his grandma's, dongha's couch-crashing at seongmok's house- he's a lot closer to his family and they've basically adopted him, lol. it's not that he feels excluded at his grandma's, but she wasn't present for a lot of his life up until moving in with her. so, for now, seongmok's place is his true "home"

⋆ avid video gamer, lol- he likes doing multiplayer ones with seongmok or hitting up the arcade for some Tekken, but he's really into anything. keeps some gacha games on his phone for when class is too boring, but he usually regrets the money he spends on them :,)

wolf keum / keum seongje

⋆ surprisingly smart ! doesn't take school seriously, so much as it comes easy to him? + ganghak isn't an idiot cesspool like some of the other schools, so he didn't get in on connections or money alone- he's not a fan of studying or showing up to all his classes, but he manages to make consistent As and Bs and, if his attendance were any better, he'd be an almost perfect student !

⋆ doesn't have much for hobbies lol. its not like his life revolved around the union, but he's never really stuck with one thing. you could say his hobby is fighting, but i think he used to be a bit of a bookworm~

⋆ loved books about mystery/crime and detective-type novels that he could solve himself; he was a bit of a nerdy kid :,) he still enjoys media of that genre but doesn't read as much as he used to. if anything it benefitted him, since he was able to figure out jared's plan pretty easy

⋆ whether he says it or not, he considers hwangmo a good friend. i imagine they went to elementary school together where social-butterfly hwangmo tried to befriend him, though seongje wasn't too interested lol- didn't even remember hwangmo until he asked seongje about it

⋆ but out of all his lackeys, he's the only one who actually respects him and sticks by his side, and has a brain on his shoulders lol- so seongje respects him, too :) sometimes gives hwangmo extra from their funds like a raise lol, buys him a snack/drink after meetings, or offers him smokes; hwangmo thinks they could be friends someday, once this union stuff blows over

⋆ ik a lot of people subscribe to "homophobic gay wolf" but i honestly think he wouldn't care that much- his sexuality isn't anybody else's business, or something he even cares about. he likes who he likes, though he doesn't really like anyone... :,)

weak hero antagonist writing appreciation

One thing I really enjoy about Weak Hero is the way it bothers to flesh out and develop the antagonists. No, I'm not talking about the throwaway random thugs, I'm referring to the main bad guys like Jimmy, Wolf, Forrest, Donald, Teddy, Jake and hell even Helmet and Philip.

When I say development I mean both character growth and regression, and also general fleshing out of their personalities and backstory, as well as what they do in the story outside of battling the heroes.

During story arcs where characters other than the main Eunjang crew get the focus, there's always a group of people complaining about wanting to see the main characters and how they don't want to see the "evil bad guys". I get it, people want to see their favourite characters instead of ones they dislike. However, what these people don't understand is that it is NECESSARY to flesh out the antagonists, almost as much as the protagonists in order for a story to go from simply good to fantastic.

Giving antagonists attention in the story, such as writing little moments for them here and there to all out story arcs and mini-backstories aids in broadening our understanding of who they are as people. If done well, it builds intrigue and interest in the characters. Sometimes this can make an antagonist more likeable, for example with Jimmy's backstory. He is presented as an arrogant jerkwad, but over time we get to see more sides to him aside from his huge ego.

He is insecure about his place in the Union and is desperate to show Donald what he's made of. He cares about those he's close to, most notably Jack. He is tenacious and determined, as shown when he got back up after being knocked out by one of the Cheongang executives. He's not just some one-dimensional punching bag for the good guys to beat, he's a person with strengths, flaws, and emotions. He may not be a good person, but he's not completely bad.

Even Dongha, who is shown to be downright crazy and ruthless in battle, is given a sympathetic background. He really values and cares for Seongmok as a friend, and remembers the kindness others show him, like when a kind woman gave him a scarf when he was cold. Dongha's behaviour can be explained by his desire to not let anyone look down on him. When he was a child, he was poor and other kids made fun of him for it. The one way he thought of to show dominance was violence, which carried through to his teens. This also explains why he loves money so much, and adds depth to his interaction with richboy Philip.

On the other hand, Helmet's development showcases how much of a horrible ass he is. He doesn't grow as a person, but we see how he gets worse after he is kicked out of the Union. Firstly, we see him as a coward, a loudmouthed bully who picks on those weaker than him for no other reason than so he seems stronger. He has no ambition to grow stronger, because he has such an inflated and downright delusional view of himself. After getting kicked out, his social media description is "Lone Wolf"... as if he chose to be alone on his own will. Sad. He lurks outside the cram schools to pick on kids for money, instead of getting a part time job like Teddy or Gerard.

At least he has the common sense to be utterly terrified of Gray when they met again. But after that, he tried to make a name for himself again by joining "Jailbreak" a group of dropouts who take pride in acting like petty thugs and not having a proper education (despite having the opportunity. so many kids would love to go to school!!) Helmet got rejected of course. This shows how desperate Helmet is to be powerful, and how he refuses to change himself or realise that he is wrong. Finally, he comes running back to Jimmy, his tail between his legs, begging to be let back into the crew. He even brought a gift! An entire plastic bag full of boiled eggs. What the hell kind of peace offering is that? Helmet is so focused on himself and honestly pretty stupid to think that Jimmy would accept him because he begged and also because of boiled eggs. Helmet didn't have the thoughtfulness to bring drinks, causing Jimmy to choke. He is chased away again and I guess that's where his story ends!

Therefore developing the antagonists adds to their character and enriches the story. It also serves as great worldbuilding because we get to see more of how the setting works. The Union is involved with shady business deals, slowly expanding their control of their region. We get to see what other organised crime groups are like with the Cheongang arc, and what happened with Manwol.

Seriously, 227 is one of the best episodes of Weak Hero yet.

Wolf and Gray don't fight. Wolf gets totally ignored by Gray and Wolf's indignant, but also fascinated! We get to see Wolf admiring Gray's brutality, which reminds him of himself. I don't know about y'all, but something about that both freaked me out and got me really excited. This is officially Wolf's approval of Gray. Not that Gray needed Wolf to like him, but WOLF LIKES GRAY. This opens SO many doors for an alliance!! An enemy of my enemy kind of thing! It'll be the kind of alliance that's like a fuse waiting to blow once they stop needing each other, but this is one of the things I've been waiting for since Wolf's introduction and I'm thrilled we're finally going to be getting it.

Everyone pull out your camcorders, Seongmok said his first words ever!! And they're of him desperately begging Gray to stop hitting Dongha 🥺 honestly, what a touching introduction for him. We really don't know much about how him and Dongha became friends. In fact, I was starting to think it was one of those things we'd just never know. But at least from this, we know Seongmok's face is capable of making expressions other than anger lol. Too bad Wolf was enjoying the beat down too much to let Seongmok have his theatre kid moment.

Gray constantly flashing back to his incident with Stephen and making direct parallels to his friendship with Eugene T_T we all thought he was past the trauma, but he's clearly well away from healing. He's processed his grief but it still seeps into his fights and with an incident mirroring Stephen's this closely, no wonder he had to be physically pulled away from the fight before he actually killed Dongha in a sad, blind rage.

Speaking of, Alex being an MVP this episode! He's the last one to show up, but he does exactly what he needs to. He pulls Gray away from the edge, urging him not to cross the line and do something he'll regret. He sees Wolf, but unlike a certain other second-in-command Jack, he doesn't instantly start a fight where there isn't one. He's quickly able to assess that at the very least, Wolf is not their enemy.

And the fight is--OH WHAT'S THIS. I-IT'S BEN WITH A METAL CHAIR FLYING UNION HEAD. Pour one out for Forrest, all his L's have been for a good cause. Ben has officially declared war on Donald. He's tired of seeing all his friends suffer at the hands of the union, and he's not going to act like the union isn't his business any longer. They've gone too far and he's coming straight for the head of the snake.

This sure makes it seem like the webtoon is coming to its finale, which is somewhat concerning, considering all the things we still don't know. However, I haven't enjoyed an episode this much in a while and I'm lookng forward to how it's all about to go down.
