NEW PLAYLIST: WAITING FOR THE SUN
In 1996, St. Martin's Press published a book called Waiting For The Sun by a British writer named Barney Hoskyns. The book is the single best history I've ever read about the California music scene. It spans 50 years, and covers everything from the Jazz of the 1940s to the Hip-Hop of the 90s. But the major portion of the book focuses on the Rock and Pop scenes of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.
I enjoyed the book so much that I put together a 90 minute mix tape of music discussed in the book. A couple of years later, with a CD burner handy, I expanded the original to a double CD that featured 38 tracks, and more than 150 minutes of music. I was so happy with the result that I wrote a letter to Rhino Records and proposed they issue a boxed set based on the book in co-operation with the author. I even sent them my track list as a starting point. Of course I never heard from them, and my hopes for a boxed set were dashed.
Here we are a couple of decades later, and we have playlists, and streaming services available. So, I thought I'd share with you the best mix tape / burned CD set I ever made. I still think Rhino missed an opportunity. See if you agree. After you listen to it, you really should read the book. It's the cheapest ticket you'll ever find for that West Coast trip you always dreamed of taking.
Here's the track list, and it should be listened to in the order given here. I spent almost as much time sequencing it as I did picking the songs - all of which spotlight some aspect, and some of the history of the Golden State.
(Disc One)
Lonesome Town - Ricky Nelson
Laurel Canyon Blvd. #2 - Van Dyke Parks
California Saga (Pts. 1-3) - The Beach Boys

37 for the ask game ( ´ ▽ ` )
Alright this was no. 37. Umm... okay the lyrics are in poetry and I can't translate it. But it's basically something something peach blossoms (you know, togenkyo/shangri-la, peach blossoms have to do with paradise/reincarnation imageries in chinese mythology) something something love that last for three reincarnation... Classic wuxia stuff... It's a nice song so I thought I'd link it anyway.
Alright let's do the next one where I can actually understand enough lyrics... Oh it's a MARINA song
Baby, I am plump and ripe I'm pinker than shepherd's delight Sweet like honeysuckle late at night
Leave it too long I'll go rot Like an apple you forgot Birds and worms will come for me The cycle of life is complete
Um... MARINA is a very great lyricist. I think the visceral quality of this... eroticism combined with mortality, along with food imagery, is just very... corporeal. It's nice.

Our Australia cross multistate tour takes us across the wine region's plain field to the rainforests, the deep Great Barrier Reef, the Rocks in the desert, small towns, and big cities like Melbourne and Sydney. Yesterday, we arrived at the Shangri-La in Sydney.
When I stepped into this hotel, I had a feeling of the time I arrived at the Marina Sands in Singapore, where East meets West demographically. Like any other hotel we stayed at along the trip, I met people from all over the world - either those who served us or our fellow travelers.
Like the US, Australia is a tapestry of cultures woven together by the threads of unity and mutual respect. From the ancient wisdom of Indigenous peoples to the vibrant hues of migrant communities, their diversity is their strength. Every face tells a story, and every voice adds to their song. Together, they form a mosaic of traditions, beliefs, and backgrounds, making Australia a beacon of inclusivity and harmony for the world. And I hope every nation on earth will be like the Australian.
After the US, Australia is one of the top five countries my family chose to resettle in when we were in the refugee camp in Malaysia. We took the US since it was the nation picked us.
As I have my usual pastry and coffee this morning on the highest floor of this hotel, I am grateful to be able to visit this kindhearted country. The danish I have this morning is fabulous. It's crispy outside and soft inside. I recall more than two decades ago, we started to create our Palmiers, Madeleine, and Brownie Bites. We purposely used butter as our first ingredient (except the BB) to form a crispy crust outside and soft inside. Today, some buyers still recognize that it is a Euro-Asian pastry. Some of our managers kept telling me we should stick to who we are - making quality products our way.
As I finish up this piece of pastry, I genuinely thank my people for their relentless effort to bring people joy through delicious food.
